Given the choice to spend my money at a small locally owned business, I'll choose the small business every time.

A fun decor feature is their display of completed Playmobil sets on shelves around the perimeter of the north side of the store -- some of the sets our own grown offspring had as children. We found a few treasures to purchase, including a fun looking 1000 piece puzzle. The store staff were cordial and helpful, even if they were not going out of their way to greet everyone who came through the doors. One big plus for us, after walking around downtown Corvallis for a few hours, is they have public restrooms available! You have to ask for a key at the checkout counter, but the restrooms are very clean and well maintained; and for those with very small children, there are full-sized changing tables. We often find ourselves being sort of "restroom snobs" when it comes to shops and restaurants; but we find the condition of the bathroom is often an accurate indicator of the rest of the facility. Anyway, The Toy Factory is a wonderful little shop, and I highly recommend it.

I haven't been in a Hallmark store in over a decade. Hallmark is located in the strip anchored by Goodwill and Planet Fitness, actually between the two. It's a good size shop and they had all the Christmas stuff up front. I did find a couple cute ornaments, though was shocked to see the normal price in most was $20. Even at half off they were a bit much! They do have a lot of stuff. I didn't explore outside of Christmas, but there is clothing, accessories, toys, cards, candles, even a case of chocolate! They have a reward program and they'll send you coupons. The employees are very friendly and nice. Overall, Hallmark is the gift shop of yesteryear. It's exactly like those I recall shopping with my mom. While that's not my style, it's an option, and as it's a locally owned franchise, you are supporting a local business.

When Steve and I were in Salem recently we had the primary purpose of going to a museum but it…read moredidn't open too early in the day so we had plenty of time to kill by seeing some of the other things that the town had to offer. We noticed that Salem had a public market and thought that would be a good way to get some local flavor and a good way to let the time pass up until the museum opened. This public market is not outside but instead inside a small building. Despite the size of the building there are a fair amount of local vendors that are in here. Some I really was impressed with. There was a guy that had us sample some of his homemade beef jerky that was very good, a plant vendor that sculpted air type plants into things making very cute dioramas with them. My favorite was a hand crafted soap vendor and I wound up buying several bars of soap from her. The fragrances were great and she made them very pleasing to the eye as well with fancy waves at one end on a bar of soap with hints of what looked like glitter. Very nice. This public market was unexpectedly fun and was a perfect morning stop to make!

But I found one in stock at Peak Sports and called to see if I could buy it and have them hold it for me for a few weeks. They offered to hold it without me buying it. The woman in the phone was so helpful and nice. We just stopped in to get it and the same kind woman offered to fit it on our dog. Such kindness. We got it adjusted and purchased in no time. Abby (our dog) checked out the store "dog" in its life jacket, got some treats, and was ready to go.

We have visited Peak Sports often since moving to Corvallis in 2017, in part to rent skis each…read morewinter. This year we were disappointed to learn that Peak has changed its system in such a way that all of the skis in my and my oldest daughter's size have been leased out for the ENTIRE season. So now our only option to obtain skis for our trip this weekend is to rent them at a cost that is 2-3x more at the resort. We are extremely frustrated and feel discriminated against as petite people. I would like to support Peak in the future as they are a wonderful local business, but at this point I feel a bit abandoned and overlooked as a long-time customer.

Everyone is friendly and how cool is it to visit a farmers market right off highway 101?! We stopped by around 2pm and it was fairly busy, but not too crowded, though it was an hour or so before the end. We saw cool geodes, foraged mushrooms, a cute lil' bakery, a produce seller with fresh strawberries and peaches, creative art prints, and a vegan food truck among other vendors. It takes place on Sundays and if you are spending some time on the beach, you might as well see what treasures you can procure at the farmer's market, too!
