We waited patiently, but there was no acknowledgment of our presence--not even a simple "I'll be right with you." Once she finished her call, we asked for a table for four. Rather than greeting us or explaining the wait in a courteous manner, she simply shook her head and informed us there would be a 40-45 minute wait. The issue was not the wait time; it was the complete lack of hospitality. Had we been greeted warmly and treated like valued guests, we likely would have waited. Instead, we were left with the clear impression that our business was neither wanted nor appreciated. We chose to leave immediately and spent $200+ at another restaurant where we felt welcomed. While I understand that busy restaurants often have long waits, there is no excuse for poor customer service and basic discourtesy. Based on this experience, I will not return, nor would I recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the area.

Having made reservations beforehand, we were really excited to try this place out. The servers who greeted us were really nice. The restaurant had a beautiful dark interior that gave off a cozy steakhouse vibe. They even offered to take my coat, how nice of them! Despite the hospitality, the food did not really live up to expectations. I got the birria, and while it was okay, it definitely wasn't worth the price I paid. My girlfriend's scallop crudel was almost as pricey and it did not even fill her up. I believe the bill for our whole meal (including a mocktail) was over $80. This was definitely not worth the price point paid for, considering that we were not fully satisfied with that meal. Regardless, many thanks to the Monti staff for having us.

I've had many in my day but this was the crown jewel of belly's - succulent, tender inside and crispy edges, and the flavor was off the chart delicious. Rigatoni with lamb did not disappoint and pasta was cooked to perfection. Saved room for chocolate mousse and it was excellent and not too sweet. Wine pairings supported the wonderful meal. Back in July 6 I made a reservation for tonight (Sept 11) for a table of 4 at 7:15pm through their website (via OpenTable). I was very much looking forward to dinner this evening. Yesterday I even received the "let them know you're coming" confirmation email to confirm my reservation - which I eagerly did. Imagine my surprise when I get to the restaurant tonight and there is a handwritten sign on their door saying "Closed Friday and Saturday for a private event". How could they be closed after I was able to make a reservation months ago AND confirm it just yesterday? Also, there was no private event happening - the doors were closed and no one was inside. I'm now left with nothing on a Friday night. (More on that in the PS). I decide to call and at least let them know that I had a reservation and can't imagine why they took my reservation. I fully expected to be leaving a voicemail but to my surprise a child answered the phone. Confused, I asked if this was Oystertale and the voice said "Yes"; figuring that perhaps this was just a young-sounding person I went ahead and explained my situation. In the middle of my explanation someone else came on the line who sounded like an adult woman, and I could hear the child trying to explain what was happening in the background, and I thought "What's happening here?" I started all over and re-explained my situation to the woman on the phone. Did she apologize? No. Not once during the entire conversation. Instead, the first things she said was "Did you make the reservation on our site or something else?" I replied "Through your website" getting annoyed that there wasn't an acknowledgment of the predicament I was in. Then she said "Well, we're trying to use Square instead of OpenTable." And I said "Clicking on the reservation button on your website took me to OpenTable to make the reservation, and I confirmed it yesterday. Just wanted to let you know this." There was silence on the other end. Literally no reply for seconds. At that point I was more than a little annoyed, so I left my name and phone number and said "thought you should know in case there are others like myself" and hung up. Look, maybe I can understand if the reservation system was on the blink, but this is a $50 - $100 a table place! How could it have gotten so bad to never have been notified by a "top tier" restaurant. Second, there was never an apology or acknowledgement of the terrible situation that left me in. Third, why was I talking to a kid on the phone?? And lastly, how many other people were in my situation? With this kind of experience it's hard to trust OysterTale. I'd expect a place of this caliber to have their reservation system rock solid and to apologize when speaking to a patron live on the phone. PS. We went upstairs to DownRiggers and they were graciously able to seat us in the bar area (on a Friday night!) and it was delicious and we ended up having a lovely evening. Thank you DownRiggers! Stacey's is tucked behind the ever popular Harbor rental shop, and many of the customers are in the construction trades. There is no seating, it's a tiny shop front, tucked into a parking lot, but it's always busy. And for a good reason. Take the meatloaf sandwich. You might think it would be a Big slice of meat with tomato sauce on two slabs of white bread, but not at Stacey's. Here it's a pita sandwich with a very light, flavorful but not too spicy sauce packed with romaine lettuce and fresh tomatoes with purple onion. The overall flavor was Mediterranean, sort of like Corfu Street food. And the steak sandwich was pretty much the same thing, except with entirely different flavors, including both grilled flavor and a peppery, spicy sauce. Both sandwiches were delicious, custom-made as we waited about 10 minutes. These guys know to add unexpected and fresh flavors to an everyday sandwich. Even their chocolate chip cookie had some hard to identify but pleasant added sprinkle of flavor. The iced tea and lemonade were both house made. A great addition to San Juan Island dining.

So we chose a large hal half vegetarian and meat lover since I'm a carnivore while my partner is a vegetarian. The meat lover half did not disappoint me. You can see three different kinds of meat on top, which made the flavor and texture of the pizza more fun and tasty. The staff were friendly and helpful too. Definitely keep this place on your list if you're looking for some late night food when visiting San Juan island.
