Just before the long weekend ended, I went to an exclusive dining experience at Black Market Supper…read moreClub located in South Surrey. It is hosted and prepared by a world class chef with no identity being revealed. They wear black masks during the entire time cooking in the kitchen. Location and time stay as a mystery until 72 hours before the dinner. Each dinner is attached to a unique theme, and our night is to honor 25 years Anniversary of the French Laundry. 72 hours before the dinner, I received the email which includes a detailed instruction on how to get to the said location and a suggested wine list to pair with the meal. Given said that, the dinner doesn't include alcohol, but sparkling, still water, tonic, soda, and cola are complimentary. You are more than welcome to bring your own bottle to enjoy the meal. The dinner began at 7pm, and we were told to arrive at 6:45pm. Feel free to mingle and find your seat, while waiting for the dinner to start! Once everyone is arrived, we commenced our dinner with the bread service, featuring Dutch Cheese Charcoal Gougères with 3 type of butter. - Lemon shallot and herb - Brown butter, burnt onion - Everything bagel I love the gougères, crispy shell with a hollow inside. It tastes great with the butters, and my favorite is to pair with the Lemon Shallot & Herb Compound Butter. Our next course is the Lobster Pancakes with carrot brown butter emulsion. The pancake is stuffed with a generous amount of lobster, chives, and mascarpone. I really enjoy the simplicity of the dish, but I wonder if it is meant to be served lukewarm. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed having each bite with a touch of the purée. Compared to the previous dish, the White Truffle Custard is more flavorful and on a saltier side. The truffle custard is served with a black truffle ragout in a colorful egg shell. The aroma from the truffle is lingering in the mouth, while enjoying the silky custard. Yabba Dabba Do is the main dish for the night, and I was looking forward to this dish the most. There are multiple components on the dish, which includes wagyu beef, beef chop and bone marrow stuffed inside a potato. It is then garnished with chanterelle mushrooms and bordelaise sauce. This dish is rich and flavourful. The beef chop is tender, and the meat just fell off the bone. My slice of wagyu beef is delicious and melts in my mouth. The bone marrow just oozes out of the potato, and it tastes delightful to pair with the potato. Lastly, the chanterelle and bordelaise played an important role on the dish, which add flavours and ease the heaviness that may bring by the protein. We ended our meal with a dessert (of course!), Chocolate Veloute. It is layered with a Dutch caramel cookie and cinnamon stick ice cream, with 24 karat gold powder and edible flowers as garnish. The dessert can get heavy after few bites, and it is difficult to crack the cookie to enjoy with other components on plate. I also found it very sticky and too sweet to my liking, especially right after a flavourful dish. * Overall Impression * I really enjoyed this dining experience with Black Market Supper Club, as it is mysterious and fun. Though each dish may have some flaws, I enjoyed the presentation and each element on the dish. I really like the idea of disclosing address and time few days in advance, which makes me more excited and looking forward to the dinner. Although it is far from the city, it is worth to go and enjoy a private dinner with a group of friends or family for special occasions. If you would like to book your next dinner, check out their website for more details. Taste : 4/5 * Service: 4.5/5 * Ambiance: 5/5 * Quality-Price: N/A

If you have ever had Peranakan food in Singapore and wish there is a place selling it in Vancouver,…read morelook no further. Bibik's is a true blue authentic Peranakan pop up kitchen. Unfortunately it is not a full fledged restaurant (Covid has scuttled the plan) but luckily we can still get to have our Nonya food fix via the commissary kitchen. The challenge is actually placing an order. It is a pre-ordering system where you have to stalk their IG account. The call to order is usually on Sunday and you place the order online and make payment. Then you wait a week for the pick up at YVR Prep on Saturday (90 mins window). I am lucky to get my order in as it sells out very quickly. They have a limited quantity per week. It is usually 3 items which are available each week (appetizer/snack/dessert, entree and a drink) I think I have tried almost all the dishes they offer over the months. Everything is good. My absolute favorite is the Mee Siam. I liken it to Violet Oon (or typical Bibik household) standard in Singapore. You could taste the spices in the rempah. The aromatic is more pronounced. I just feel there is pride in the dishes made, to introduce what real Peranakan food is. For me that is really Singapore food, food that I miss. Now if only there is Ayam buah keluak too, that will make my life complete. Haha. I also wish for itek tim, hee peow soup and Babi pongteh. I was so glad I managed to try the Tok Panjang which was available during the holidays. That was really a feast with plenty of dishes -- itek sio, sambal prawns, chap chye, ngoh hiang, achar, pulot hitam and the nonya Kuehs. I love the design and packaging too. It is all very simple yet pretty and great care has been taken in the products. They are very friendly too. Follow their IG if you have a hankering for Singapore food. They usually post pictures of Singapore and the food. But that may not be a great idea now since traveling is restricted and it may make the cravings even worse.

Pickup was easy from their commissary kitchen. As you can see in the photo, the portions are very generous and it was very flavourful! There are actually a lot of prawns hidden under the fried egg, arranged artfully in a spiral. The fried egg was perfectly cooked with a soft runny yolk (just the way I like it!) Apparently they sell out very fast so if you want to order, best to do so on their instagram on the day the release the menu for the week. Only comment I have is I wish it was hotter as I picked it up during lunch hour and brought it home immediately to eat. I was too hungry this time, but next time I'd probably heat it up more. Still delicious lukewarm!

We ordered an abundant spread, and every dish impressed. The clear crowd favorite was the Singapore black pepper prawns - fragrant, perfectly spiced, and completely addictive. That black pepper sauce was hands down the star of the meal: rich, peppery, and deeply flavorful. It was my favorite and could easily be eaten on everything. The Mala curry crab and XO crab were both outstanding; layered with complex, indulgent flavors. The Thai green chili clams and saus mentega clams were vibrant and comforting, while the crab fried rice had generous morsels of crab folded throughout the dish. We also really enjoyed the Indonesian chicken wings, which were crispy and flavorful, and the stir-fried vegetables, which added a fresh, well-balanced contrast to the seafood-heavy menu. Everything traveled well, was thoughtfully prepared, and made for an unforgettable catered meal. If you're considering catering from Marimakan Crabhouse, I can't recommend it highly enough. Get the black pepper sauce! Amazing from start to finish, and Chef V or Rachel is lovely to work with.

It actually kind of 5 course as they gave everyone and initial little bite that the chef put together. I can't quite remember what it was, but I think it was some kind of cauliflower blended bite (see first pic). The price was definitely decent for the four course, it wasn't super expensive or anything. I also tried the goat cheese souflee, which was good, the crab roast was better though, then I had the pasta which needed salt and didnt have much flavor. I will say though that someone got the filet mignon and that was really good. The fondue was basic, but the bread and ice cream was amazing! So biggest takeaway is I think this place is really hit or miss. There's some items that are good/great and others that are really not good/great. So if you come and pick the good stuff I think you'd really enjoy it!
