The first company said the damage was likely from a water line that came out on the roof. He suggested I contact a plumber for that issue but said I needed the penetrations resealed. I also had some fascia and woodwork on the sides of the house that needed painting. The quote was very reasonable but the guy was kind of a fast talker. AA Brite was the second company to come give an estimate. Derek arrived on time and took the time to find where the water line on the roof was connected. He found that it was to the old swamp cooler. He spent a good 30 minutes on the roof (the other guy was up there for maybe 5) and also found that my AC was blowing out of the old swamp cooler vent on the roof. He temporarily sealed it so that I wasn't cooling the whole neighborhood. He even came inside and looked at my HVAC lines to make sure the old swamp cooler was not still hooked up. This is all from a roofing company! I was given a quote to cap the old swamp cooler vent and seal the roof penetrations. It was a little more than the first quote and did not include the painting, but it was still very reasonable. I canceled the appointment with the third company because I was so happy with Derek's thoroughness, helpfulness, and explanation of everything. He really went above and beyond to help me. After about a week I was able to get the work scheduled. Chris arrived on time and did a great job. He took photos during and after the repair, which were shared with me. He was attentive, polite, sounded knowledgeable.....and was not pushy. I had to postpone the starting date for medical reasons and he was kind and understanding. The crew arrived on time on the stated date----Ernesto, Allan and Pablo. They were quiet, polite, friendly and worked well as a team. The sequencing seemed really well-planned. Prep work was done as stated, and done with care. I appreciated that they worked quietly and without blaring music :-) Like Justin, they were patient with my questions and made sure I was satisfied with the work.....giving me opportunity to inspect before they left at the end of the job. The job included painting the outside of the house, flat roof coating, perimeter brick walls and 2 beaten up metal gates (which now look pristine). They worked a full day and it was 100 degrees all week......even my neighbor commented, "these guys really WORK!" The estimate was within similar range to another well-respected company, and it was my decision to upgrade to higher quality paint. In summary, I'd be glad to use them again (hope I don't have to :-))) .......and recommend! I don't expect anything to happen that will make me change my mind (ha). If I still worked at Raytheon, I'd be telling all my coworkers. You can probably find people for less money but you'll pay more in the long run for the substandard job. Often times by paying less, you pay more (in the long run). So cheap people, like me, always go for quality that looks awesome and lasts a long time -- often paying a little bit more upfront. Case-in-point. When we had our addition built in 2014, the contractor's painter Jose (does not work for Goodwin & Sons) extensively watered down the paint and took every shortcut known to man. When I questioned if he was doing two coats, he said yes, then proceeded to just spray the same area twice. OMG! Well that paint job indeed "colored" the stucco, but we needed to repaint in four years but probably should have done it sooner. So this is what inexpensive painters do and how you may pay more in the long run. I mention one of my prior experiences since Goodwin & Sons was different. It was obvious right from the start. I hired them for my parent's house to repair the parapets and for exterior painting. Ernesto was the lead for our job and Justin (the owner) helped on the second day. Work completed March 5, 2026. 1. Detailed Bid: Everything was itemized and made sense. The price was reasonable. 2. Warranty: Ours was five years, but maybe this period was due to the high-end paint we selected? 3. THICK Paint Coating: Justin said he used 60 gallons of paint on my parent's 1,800 ft2 house. I believe him since they sprayed, sprayed, and sprayed the same spot. They immediately used a roller thereafter to ensure a smooth look. I even questioned Justin if he watered down the paint because of how much paint was being applied -- the answer was of course no they never water down the paint. For reference, I'm pretty sure Jose (does not work for Goodwin & Sons) from our 2014 addition used about 30 gallons on my 3,500 ft2 home. 4. Detail Work: Everything was masked. Windows/doors were caulked. Lines were clean. Not a speck of paint where it wasn't supposed to be. 5. Thorough clean up: Self-explanatory. They even picked up some concrete and stucco from when the house was built. So the place was cleaner than when they started! 6. Easygoing and Very Respectful: It was soooo refreshing to like the owners and workers. Everyone was so nice and easygoing. I felt so bad asking Ernesto to fix something he missed and he was actually consoling me, saying it was totally fine, and he appreciated me pointing it out. Wow, how many times does that happen with a home contractor? First time for me! 7. Follow Up: Justin and Ernesto said that if there is anything I find later, they will be happy to fix it...I believe them. And I do not think I'll find anything wrong. 8. Painting Wood: They filled and painted the wood. Their process is great with great results. The wood columns had some good cracks since the prior owners did not maintain them for about 8 years, but they all look awesome now. The results were spectacular and I cannot be more happy. The pictures speak for themselves. I did not pick angles to make things look good...everything was just good. My house is next and Goodwin & Sons will be the ones doing it.

Some years ago, I made perhaps the biggest mistake ever. I contacted AHS and Herp Penrod to…read moreprovide a price for the repair and replacement of some wood gates at my home. An individual calling himself 'Carmen' came out, looked over the job, and sent out a price sheet; no contract was ever offered. My wife and I agreed and sent the entire asking price to Mr. Penrod to start the job ASAP. My wife and I are both over eighty, and we're considered old school, as Carmen pointed out the two times he spoke to us. The 'old school' was his answer to not replacing the gate handle, the house numbers, the gate spring he tore off, the flag holders on the fascia board and the discarded wood he threw over the wall. He and Mr. Penrod basically approached the job as a paid-for project that was finished. Tongue-and-groove slats were replaced with the cheapest knot-filled, and now, unrequested, spaced wood. The screw heads ranged from Phillips-head to power-tool-only acceptable. To no avail, I contacted the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, the Atty. General's office, the Tucson Better Business Bureau, they had given AHS the A+ rating I relied on, and influenced our decision, and Pima County Age Council. Their response was, "What do you want us to do?" The Tucson BBB replied that they didn't write the reviews, and the Registrar of Contractors was relieved after two appointments, both canceled, didn't address a resolution. The nearly $4,000 job was approached with a hostile age basis attitude of contempt and scorn. The check was cashed so we can do as we wish, and they did. My email request the day after the job was considered done by AHS, and only AHS, as no walk-through was offered or ever took place, to meet with Mr. Penrod and Carmen at my home was less than a five-minute conversation. It seemed it was more a pretext to appease the state's requirement. It ended with Mr. Penrod shouting across my drive, in front of my home, that he considered my email request "a much of bullshit". He later called me from what I believed was his Cell Phone, as it didn't come in clearly and I could not understand him. It was the last attempt either of us made to contact the other. The Tucson BBB continues to have an A+ rating for AHS; Angie's List, on which AHS is considered a vetted and worthy contractor, said "sorry" and was never heard from again. There is much, much more, but as I will soon turn 86, I don't have the time or energy to deal with this 'elder abuse'.
