If you need ANYTHING done with your car, GO HERE! They are VERY honest and will always recommend the less expensive options for any remedy. I had an engine warning light come on in my Volvo. I drove in without an appointment. They did a free analysis, saw that there was a restriction in air flow. They disassembled the hoses leading to the air filter, saw some leaves, debris and blew everything out and reset my computer-no charge and I am NOT a repeating customer. What is up with this Jewel rewards card deal... apparently you need a card to actually swipe to get the deal since it's the first option when you try to pay at the pump. I've seen this at other Shell stations but I just ignore it... well, this Shell, it's in your face as an option and I accidentally selected it rather than credit or debit... well, it's freezing and had to go in to see why my card was not accepted, doh! OK, I'll try it again... third error that didn't really tell me what was wrong, I finally ended just doing the transaction inside cause I didn't like the "you need to see the cashier" choice. Shell ended up losing at least another $10 since when you go inside, you have to tell them how much you want to put and 'fill'er up' is not really a choice. So, I went with $50 which really didn't fill up my Rav at over $4.50/gal, but whatever, didn't want to deal with give me $75 and yea, refund me what I don't use. So, aside from the misunderstanding, it's a gas station. Nothing spectacular other than knocking nearly 0.80 off each gallon if you get a wash... thought about it since my car needs it but it's freezing! I don't want to deal with frozen spigots and frozen doors in the morning. Maybe in a couple of weeks or when I have salt spots, for now, it'll be OK being a little dirty. read more

These guys were there when I needed them last week. I was on a volunteer drive for ETS/NW (www.etsnw.org - a great organization!), taking a senior who no longer drives to her doc's appointment. We went by the Walgreen's at NW Highway to pick up her prescription after her appt. The pharmacy tech was adamant it would take 20 minutes. So I went to the Jewel at Plum Grove & Palatine Road to kill the 20 minutes. I came out and my car was DEAD. Deader than a doornail. Like NOTHING. No growl, no whine, nada, which was shocking to me. I walked over to Palatine Shell and asked if they could give my car a jump. Juan came over and jumped my '99 Camry and it started right up. So I drove out onto Plum Grove Road and it died in the middle of the road. ACCCCK! I rushed back over and Juan came and jumped it again and we got it to the station. This is where they were great. They drove my elderly passenger and me back to Walgreens to get her prescription, then dropped her at home and then dropped me at home. I went back the next morning to get my Camry with a brand new battery. Juan and Tony went above and beyond to make sure that my elderly passenger and I were well taken care of. I was really enthusiastic about Shell Auto Repair in downtown Palatine---my car is older---I had stopped there several times for fluid replacements and they seemed nice and efficient. Then I had a larger repair (around $600.00) which went ok. Then I returned a few weeks later for another $370.+ repair; I was quoted verbally around $370. with a 10 percent sr. discount--Tony asked for my credit card--I then asked Tony then if there would be any added "charges for fluid replacements" and was told NO, all was included; I then gave him my credit card. When I went to pick up the car after hours they had charged my card over $400.00; they had not called to inform me of the upcharge "for fluids". When I phoned them to inquire the next day I was told abruptly they "have the rite to do this up charging and in fact, many times do". I stated I had asked the question at the time of giving my CC, and they replied "well, maybe we are just not the right garage for you". Absolutely no regard for the customers feelings or their part in charging more than stated without informing me when we had pre discussed the dollar amount. It would have taken such a small amount of respect on their part to just listen and make it right. I have run a business for many years, and listening to your customers is so important.
