The bad: teri beef dish was not good. The beef had the texture of boiled meat and it had sauce just poured on top. I ate a couple of strips and just couldn't stomach eating the rest. I did eat the rice though. The good: big portions. I got noodles here before and those were good. read more

The two beef patties are delicious and generous as well! You top that with fried egg with runny yolk on top, a bit of grilled onions, a nice Mac salad on the side and generous amount of smoky and peppery Loco Moco Sauce, it's such a value meal at $18! I've reviewed here before- but if you are a Hawaiian food fan, you need to come here! One of the only places regionally that does Meat Jun. Not only do they have it, but it's done right. I feel like I'm on Kauai when I'm eating it. The teriyaki beef and chicken are both phenomenal. A real rich and flavorful sauce. Great mac salad too! Best meat jun on the mainland that I've had so far! The quality of their meat jun makes me want to try their whole menu. So one of my favorite dishes to get in HI is meat jun. It's a dish you don't find often in restaurants on the mainland and even more rare to find a version close to HI. This is the CLOSEST. Family working this food cart was very nice and you can tell they are working hard to put out good food. Luckily I came when I did, because I think they closed right after I ordered. Meat jun: perfectly marinated meat, good egg consistency, and the sauce has the right amount of vinegar to it. Don't get me started on how restaurants in Seattle mess up on the sauce. Super tender meat, rice was good, Mac salad was delicious too! I usually take a piece of meat jun, dip one side in the sauce, drag it across some rice (I love saucy to rice) and eat it all together. LOCATION: This awesome food cart is nestled right in the corner BG Food Cartel. There's street parking from what I gathered and possibly a parking garage/lot area since it's next to City Hall. AMBIANCE: It's an outdoor food cart area, but there's open seating, as well as covered seating with heaters. Plenty of space to walk and some areas of astro turf to walk and bring your pets! SERVICE: Experience good ol' Hawaiian hospitality with friendly faces and generous spirit of Aloha. FOOD: The Loco Moco plate was delicious. Gravy was dark and flavourful and the hamburger patty was thick and cooked well. Not dry at all and topped with egg. Perfection. We also tried the Meat Jun which I've never had before. The meat was cooked well, juicy, and the egg gave it a nice crispy texture. Dip it in the sauce that comes with it and you're in for a great meal. Their kalua pork is the best I've had in the Portland area. They cook it just like it should be with the right amount of smokiness AND with the cabbage. It's a taste of Hawaii for sure. We also got the Teriyaki Chicken and the sauce was not overly sweet or salty and the chicken was cooked well and not dry. OVERALL: Officially my go-to for a taste of Hawaii on the mainland. Tucked into the food cartel in Beaverton, this spot stood out from the SMELL. I had the Garlic Chicken, a special of the day, and my mouth was watering even before I took a bite. The dish was well made, full of garlicky, sweet, and salty flavors. I'm giving it 4 stars because I thought it was a tad bit too salty, to a point that it was almost bitter. These are some authentic Hawaiian grinds. I haven't even seen Lau Lau outside of a homemade family gathering before. The menu is slim with only Da Classics. If authentic Hawaiian food is what you crave, then this is the place. Spam musubi is awesome. Perfect rice ratio and flavorful well seasoned spam. Although my husband and I now live in Oregon, we consider Hawaii our home. We were overjoyed to discover Palenaka's, which offers some of the most delicious (Hawaii) local food we've ever had - BG food cartel's best kept secret! I'm Korean and have had a LOT of meat jun - probably more than the average person would ever consume in a lifetime - and Palenaka's is hands down the best I've tried. Tender, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned; the meat is not just well-marinated but also thicker than most iterations, so it's almost like a very thin medium-rare steak. Very luxurious! Chicken katsu is also on-point - crispy, but not oily or heavy, and again perfectly seasoned. And no plate lunch would be complete without two scoops of rice - reminds me of my mom's stovetop rice growing up and my husband, while not Korean, is picky about rice and will always request an extra scoop :) Eating here warms our hearts and tummies. There are a few other Hawaiian restaurants in town that we love (808 and Roxy's) but after trying Palenakas for the first time, they are giving them both a run for the money. It was so good and the two people running the cart were very kind. I highly recommend this cart at the Biggi food cartel. I will definitely get food from them again!
