Pork and chicken are sitting on a pile of rice with more rice served on the side. You can get Mac and cheese but who wants that from Hawaii? As far as taste, let's just say that it's edible. If it wasn't for the sauces they provide (containers laying around that everyone touches) the meal would be bland and dry. Only one person working who was prioritizing the drive thru while food was just sitting in the window for a long time. So prepare yourself for a long unnecessary wait. I'm not sure what people are expecting from Hawaiian Time, but I got a Regular Huli Huli Chicken plate today and it was delicious. There is a sign at the drive-thru speaker that they are under-staffed (no shocker there these days), but I didn't wait more than 10 minutes for my order. I believe the owner was working the drive-thru along side a skeleton crew. I would 1000x's rather support a local place versus the mega chain next door. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because they didn't have chicken katsu, but knowing what the options are now, is still go back. They were really short handed and I felt bad for the employees. But other than a short wait to order, they got the food out in very little time. So very tasty. And the staff was really friendly. It's a shame they don't have a kids menu, but honestly you can just order the large version of the platter and share. My 7-year-old, when asked if he was done, said "it's too good for me to be done!" He then ate every grain of rice off his plate. I'd like me you don't care for macaroni salad, they are happy to sub extra rice for it. Plus, cool surfing photos! read more

The owner parks it in the middle of this parking lot so people aren't able to exit to the main road. This makes it very difficult to get in and out of the parking lot and also makes it to where people have to go an unnecessarily longer distance to leave the parking lot. We have always enjoyed going to the two Hawaiian Times in Salem for the past few years. The drive thru person ignored our order it seems as we got the completely wrong order. We asked for two mixed plates, and right after we finished ordering the first one, she interrupted and asked, is that it? We let her know that we were getting two mixed plates. So we proceeded to repeat the order with what meats we wanted for each plate. Once we got to the window, she asked us if we wanted to leave a tip, we said "yes," but she never asked us how much. Then she gave us our food and turned around. We had to get her attention again to get some extra sauces. When we got home we opened the containers and to our surprised both containers were exactly the same. It tasted like grilled chicken with sweet and spicy sauce (the kind you normally get with egg rolls). Which is whatever, but not even close to what we ordered. None of the meats we asked for were included and to top it off, mixed plates with beef are more expensive, which is what we ordered. So we paid for a mixed plate with beef, and we got a plate with that odd chicken without beef. It's a shame, because we have enjoyed our experiences in the ones in Salem and this one really ruined it for us. Thankfully now that we live in Beaverton we can go to Roxy's Island Grill, which is slightly cheaper and tastes SO much better, and it's made to order. We just wanted to give Hawaiian Time another shot. It was so disappointing! It was our first meal of the day so we ate it. Limiting outings and social distancing added to the fact that we didn't want to go back out in the hopes of maybe getting what we wanted to begin with. Skip this one. Go to Roxys and next time you're in Salem try what Hawaiian Time is supposed to be like! read more

This is the third Hawaiian time I have gone to and the food is very good. I have had better but it's never a bad meal. That alone would give it 4 stars. This group seems to find vacant buildings and re purpose them to become Hawaiian times. The ones in Eugene and West Salem are old gas stations. This one is obviously a former Burger King. What used to be one of my favorite restaurants has taken a turn for the horrible. Despite the reinforcement of the indoor mask mandate, multiple employees were without masks, including at least one of the cooks and the person taking orders (i.e. DIRECTLY INTERACTING WITH CUSTOMERS), who appears to be an owner/manager. Already filed an OSHA complaint, but I thought the public deserved to know, too. On top of that, they placed fliers all over their entrances and drive-thru blaming the unemployment benefits on their reduced hours (rather than them not paying enough to attract employees)...at the same time they've been expanding their number of locations. read more

I have driven by a couple of times and really wondered how this place would be. I happened to be there this time around lunch time, so I stopped. I decided on the chicken plate. YUMMM. The chicken was perfectly tender and delicious. Added some of their teriyaki sauce over the rice and again, YUMMMM. The mac salad was the only weak part of the meal for me. Very heavy mayo taste and I'm really not a fan of pepper in mac salad. Maybe next time, I'll try to order an extra scoop of rice and skip the mac salad. They come in 3 sizes. While I probably won't ever come back to these restaurants I was always a fan before recently. I used to live in Eugene right next time one of these places. I didn't know there was one here until about two weeks ago when I was working nearby! The food is pretty good pretty consistent between all locations I have been to. They have three side options and each comes with a good amount of food for the price. So if there is nothing else this place isn't too bad to eat at. The problem that I now have with the place is the sign they have posted around the restaurant blaming their lack of employees on people collecting unemployment. I personally couldn't imagine someone who would post a sign like this being good person to work for. I would bet their staffing issue is caused by not paying their employees enough and being a poor work environment. Contrary to most other people, I genuinely enjoy Hawaiian Time. I've been going here since 2012 and their Huli Huli chicken is like nothing else that any Hawaiian restaurant offers. I walked out of this restaurant full and the food didn't taste bad. I had the huli huli chicken with rice and mac salad. The rice was cooked well. The mac salad was al dente which I didn't mind, better than overcooked and mushy, a little too much mayo, but too much black pepper for my taste. I was very disappointed in the huli huli chicken because it was not the huli huli chicken I was used to. If you have lived in Hawaii and then come here hoping it to taste the same, you may be disappointed like me. Another thing was that they only had three choices of meat: huli huli chicken, kalua pork and spicy chicken. Bring back a beef choice, Teriyaki or kalbi or both. read more

I'm sorry I ever cheated on you Roxy ....it will never happen again! Despite some of the reviews I have friends that rave about this place. I DO NOT understand why. I came in not with overly high hopes, but thinking I was going to get a somewhat decent Hawaiian meal. I chose the #6...sweet & spicy chicken. $7.95. The rice tasted some what dried out, the mac salad was passable but not that great, and the chiken....I could have made at home...but better. The chicken was cut into cubes and had a ton of fat on it. So much so I didn't eat half of it. You can tell the sauce was just something out of a bottle. Not really great options for vegeterians and about 2-3 options each of beef/chicken/pork. Upside? They have a drive through since it used to be a Burger King. That's neat I guess? The staff was friendly and the place is clean and bright. That's where my 2 stars are going. Unfortunately I would not come back. I've been coming here for awhile, even though one summer when we had those 100 degree days their manager apparently didn't want to spend the money on the AC, SO IT WAS ACTUALLY HOTTER. inside than it was outside. That's not my complaint, my complaint is I went through the drive in the other night and even though it may seem cheap I never leave a tip for the drive in, yet some how they charged me an extra 2 dollars. Yes it's only 2 dollars, but it's my 2 dollars. This unfortunately will be enough for me to never go back and i really enjoy the food. CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE LEAVING. My diabetic friend ordered a plate last night; he asked for no rice, and he paid $3 to sub rice for extra vegetables. The entire meal was on top of rice and there were no extra veggies. Seemed like some stony employees were a little out of it. I always order the #6 Mauna Loa chicken. This chicken was full of questionable meat and I even bit into bones. Full disclosure: the outside is a little run-down. BUT please look past that and get their food. I got the grilled chicken and veggies, substituting romaine for all the white rice. I kept the macaroni salad because I LOVE Hawaiian macaroni salad. And everything was just delicious. The teriyaki sauce is light and flavorful (not salty like some places make). The veggies are perfect: summer squash, ell pepper, mushrooms, onion, carrots, snow peas lightly grilled. Coupled with the crisp romaine and the creamy, yummy macaroni salad, it was very satisfying and I was a happy camper. I'll for sure go there again! Go to Roxy's. They sell plates a certain size and hardly any food in them when you get it. You pretty much just paid for a to go box. I paid $11 for just chicken and veggies in a "regular" size plate. When I opened it there was barely enough food to cover th bottom of the plate. In general HT is pretty solid, but this location (SW Beav-Hills) has more recently and increasingly become 'hit or miss'. My recommendations are: 1) don't go through the drive-thru if you want prioritized service--and maybe that's their business practice to accommodate walk-ins before the drive-thu, that's fair to honor the patrons that walk their butts inside over the lazy bums that don't. But when you watch your order sit on the counter for 10 minutes while the cashier expedites three different families orders inside over your one small entree is perplexing. 2) don't visit after 7:30-ish as to avoid very rationalized portion sizes. Tonight's the first time I ordered a small portion, so I wasn't expecting much but I didn't expect it to be literally four tiny dried up pieces of chicken with lots of crunchy rice.
