I seriously can't say enough good things about Palencia Dental and Dr. Kinsey. As a young adult, I was nervous about the cost, but she made everything feel doable and really took the time to explain what I needed and why, no pressure at all. I came to this clinic seeking help for TMJ pain after confirming on the phone that someone would be available to answer my questions about insurance and costs. Instead, I was rushed through intake--photos taken, hooked up to a TENS machine, shown a promotional video, and asked to fill out forms--all before I was told that the treatment would cost $6,500 (with no guarantee of results). When I said I couldn't afford that, I was immediately offered a "discount" down to $5,800 and told that if I had good credit, they could offer me a payment plan. At no point was I given a clear explanation of costs upfront, and it felt more like a high-pressure sales pitch than medical care. I left in tears--humiliated, angry, and feeling taken advantage of during a time I was already in pain. This is not how patients seeking help should be treated. I went in about a year and a half ago for my first appt. I recently had all new crowns, etc., replaced before moving to FL. The staff, as it turns out, was more interested in taking photos of my teeth/mouth and selling me veneers for a perfect smile. I was not interested at all. I never actually met the Dr & have no desire to ever do so in any way, shape or form. This is not an office or practice that has my best interest in mind, IMHO. read more

I called Palencia Dental and explained I was new to the area and was looking for a dentist that could do preventative and cleanings. I was told that was what they did but they required a 90-minute introduction which lasted 2 hours. They tried to talk me into a crazy plan starting at $7500 and that was just for the diagnosis. Dr. Kinsey was extremely rude calling me an ostrich implying I had my head buried in the ground because I said my crowns are good. read more

My experience at Palencia Dental under the care of Dr.Kensey was a nightmarish experience. Involving tremendous pain, offset veneers, lingering sensitivity exposure to workplace drama, being snapped at by Dr. Kensey as well as a $700 overcharge not being refunded. Oh and they did a root canal on a perfectly health tooth without my knowledge that somehow still hurts but I was told by them it must be "physiological". I originally went to Palencia dental after seeing an add online for veneers. The add stated 4 veneers at $8000 (I believe it was like $8199 or something close) with a free consultation. I called the office and scheduled my consultation for what would have been my dream procedure.... I had always been self conscious of my crooked teeth so this was literally going to be a life changing and dream fulfilling procedure for me... or it was supposed to be... This all happened in March of 2020 (just as the COVID-19 pandemic started shutting down the US). My consultation went well, I was impressed with Sarah and the recommendations she gave for Dr.Kensey. She recommended I get the front 6 teeth done instead of 4 and gave me an initial estimate for both that was very much higher than the online add... $10,000 for 4 veneers and $12000-$14000 for 6. I was disheartened but also inspired by the conversation about how easy and painless the process would be and the promise that within a month I could have the smile I'd always wanted. I also explained to Sarah that I was on a limited time frame due to an upcoming move to Oregon. I went home and after much debate and encouragement from my partner decided that I would like to proceed with the process and come back to the office for a full work-up. That visit consisted of xrays and Dr.Kensey doing an evaluation to see what all work needed to be done and unfortunately it was extensive. When we got to the financial part of the visit I was given 3 prices. 1. $24000 to restore all teeth to health and 6 veneers 2. $16000 to restore only the top teeth to health and 6 veneers 3. $13000 for just veneers Option 2 was about where my limit was as far as payment goes however my biggest red flag here was that the treatment plan was my top teeth that wasn't in immediate danger instead of my bottom teeth that had some very serious concerns. One cavity that needed a crown. A large root canal that needed a retreat as well as a wisdom tooth that was very decayed and broken. I chose to rearrange the plan to cover the teeth most in need of attention including the retreat and the crown and was told the retreat root canal would be paid for under my plan but done at a different office because Dr.Kensey didn't do retreats. Fine with that I signed the paperwork and began the process. My next appointment was for the veneer preps. I was prescribed a mild sedative before hand which had extra doses. I took the medicine as directed and had a 4 hour procedure that was very uncomfortable during which I was completely awake and lucid... Not because of pain but because there was an undercurrent of frustration in the room made obvious by Dr.Kensey. She was very short with the technician assisting her and often huffed at how long it would take to be handed a tool. The drama that was unfolding over my chair while I laid there for 4 hours with my mouth open felt very unprofessional and made me very uncomfortable. I left that day with my temporary teeth and my next appointment would be to put on the veneers. When sarah called to follow up on my procedure I expressed concern over Dr.Kenseys behavior during my procedure and was told "I know exactly what you're talking about Autumn and the thing is, Dr.Kensey is so brilliant that she is already two steps ahead of everyone and waiting for them to catch up." Which didn't make me feel any better about my experience. Letting the matter go I looked forward to my next appointment which would wind up being the worst pain I have ever experienced. I recently cracked a veneer, and while Googling for a nearby dentist, I stumbled upon Palencia Dental. I could not be happier that I did. Dr. Kinsey, Sara, Alyssa, and Kayla always greet and treat you like family. There was additional dental work I'd been putting off, and they went over multiple options with me to ensure I was comfortable with the treatment plan they worked out for me. That's right, they value and consider the patient's input and wishes. and take your budget and scheduling needs into account. Palencia Dental also has an unique pain management system. I'm not usually a baby about pain, but I was concerned due to the work needed. Well, Dr. Kinsey introduced me to some state of the art, zen inspired adjunct to the normal numbing procedure, and it is amazing. Not only was I almost completely pain free during the procedure, I had minimal pain or soreness the following days. Lastly, and this might only be impressive to me, but instead of the usual water for rising, Dr Kinsey hung a bag of saline, and it made all the difference. As someone who grew up with salt water as a rinse for any oral bleeding, it was refreshing. I was already sold on the stellar service at Palencia Dental, but that cemented it. So, I highly recommend Dr. Kinsey and her team for any and all dental needs. You will not regret it. read more

I have been going to Dr. Kinsey since she opened the practice over 10 years ago. She truly cares about her patients and the quality of her work. She goes to continuing education to learn and specialize in new areas and the latest technologies. My son just finished his orthodontic plan and his teeth look stunning. I had a very long ( scheduled) appt today and they were so patient and kind and the results can already be seen. I even got a hot hand towel and an adult treat afterwards. She is also a generous community partner and donates time to local charities. It is nice to have a personable, friendly, no pressure service. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Kinsey since about 2015. During that time, I very much felt the high pressure tactics other reviewers have mentioned. For starters, I was told I needed $10k+ in dental work, which I put off and I'm glad I did. After being badgered about it for a few years, I decided to get a second opinion from the dentist I used to see and who had treated every generation since my grandparents. He took new x-rays and after an examination and reviewing the treatment plan prepared by Dr. Kinsey, declared that I needed exactly zero of that work and that my teeth were "beautiful, healthy, and shouldn't be ruined" by the work suggested. Cool. Additionally, at every cleaning I was pressured into the oral cancer screening light. They ask (tell) you that they're doing it, as they are already headed toward your face, and oh, by the way, that will be $25 because insurance doesn't cover it. I've consulted with another dentist and an MD, and both confirmed that this is totally unnecessary for someone with my risk profile. If this was truly about patient health, the discussion about the screening should take place at the very beginning of the appointment and include a review of risk factors. Finally, I had an appointment scheduled for this past Wednesday (the day after the ADA recommended all dental offices suspend elective services due to COVID-19). I called to cancel and was very much pressured into keeping my appointment. This is totally irresponsible and further points to an agenda of money above patient health. Out of curiosity, I checked with several other offices in the area and they did in fact close per the ADA. I suggest you see one of those dentists instead. read more

Having moved to St Augustine and needing a new Dentist, I picked Palencia Dental based on the fact that A) They are in Delta Dental's network, and B) they have a fancy website, generally a good sign. I submitted an appointment request online late one night and received a call the next day to set one up, so off to a good start. The appointment I got was a month in the future. Seems like a long time, but I requested a specific day, and I was able to get it. For a general cleaning, I wasn't too worried about it anyway. Arriving for my appointment, I found a polite and helpful receptionist in a very nicely appointed office. Eventually I get called back by the Dental Hygienist for some digital x-rays and to get the cleaning started. Which is where the fun begins. By fun, I mean the sales pitch. The cleaning starts with a question of what kind of toothbrush I use, followed by a well-rehearsed sales pitch for the Phillips Sonicare toothbrush. It's the best out there and here's why, etc. Followed by, "And you can buy them from us!" Super. My teeth are being cleaned by a Phillips Salesperson. Turns out, that's not true. They're actually being cleaned by a Listerine Salesperson! Next question: "Do you use any sort of rinse, like Listerine?" .... "I use Crest Pro Health" .... "Well, Listerine is really the best. It has alcohol in it and it gives you that nice burning sensation." So, 5 minutes into the cleaning, 2 sales pitches. During the cleaning, I'm asked if I'd consider Orthodontics, as my teeth have shifted slightly since having my braces removed. But really, they are still pretty straight, and I can still fit my retainers from middle school in my mouth just fine. If you're keeping count at home, that's 3 sales pitches. A bit later into the cleaning, the hygienist recommends I come back in 3 months, instead of the usual 6 covered by insurance, to make sure I don't need a "deep cleaning." At the end of the appointment she goes ahead and schedules that visit for me. (up to 4!) Finally, Dr. Kinsey finally shows up after an hour or so. She pops in, takes all of about 30 seconds to peer in my mouth, and recommends a crown on my front tooth (which had been broken and repaired, but isn't bothering me) and replacing two fillings (also not bothering me) with porcelain on-lays (which my insurance doesn't cover, only metallic). As quickly as she arrived, she's gone. (5 and 6) The appointment wraps up and I go to collect an estimate for those on-lays.... $1050, after insurance... "Would you like to schedule that appointment now?" ... "Uh, no thanks." So, now I have to find a new dentist. Again. read more

Having moved around the country multiple times in the last decade I have unfortunately had the task of looking for a new dentist more often than most. My teeth are in pretty good condition and I do practice good oral healthcare. That being said, I will say that I was very impressed with the thoroughness of my dental exam. Dr. Kinsey took her time with me and answered my questions along the way. She seemed genuinely interested in getting me to my maximum possible oral health status. Very bad experience. They took us in as patients, knowing that my wife's medical plan did not work with them. Very first visit, Dr. Kinsey spent only a little time with me, but I was escorted to the financial person who told me I needed $7000 worth of work. The doctor never sat with me or talked with me to explain why all this was necessary. I then went to see a different dentist, who looked at the same x-rays, and said that Dr. Kinsey practices "extremely aggressive dental care". In other words, there's a great deal of up-charging from what is really necessary. Another couple who are friends of mine complained about the same problem and stop seeing Dr. Kinsey as well. Incidentally that visit I had was roughly 24 months ago, and I have had no problems with my teeth since then... Just routine cleanings. Beware of the outward appearance of a very pleasant and professional professional looking staff. Shockingly, they also charged me $35 to get copies of my own x-rays that I paid for, which could've been simply emailed as attachments to my new dentist. My new dentist was very surprised that they would actually charge me to move the x-rays. Just another indication of the emphasis on making money versus professional dental care. read more

Be careful when you read the direct mail piece offering new patients a $59 cleaning-read the fine print. It's a bait and switch and I didn't appreciate wasting my time or feeling the need to explain why I couldn't afford the over $8000 in dental work they wanted to sell me and several hundreds of dollars of cleaning etc BEFORE they would honor the $59 cleaning. Also, I wouldn't complete your paperwork online at her website as you cannot confirm it is a secure page and they ask for enough information that if someone intercepted the info, your identity is in jeopardy. The Dr. seemed very nice and the office was pleasant, too bad I will not go back. read more

I have never felt so violated at a medical facility. It was all bait and switch. I left worse than when I came in. It was like being in a car dealership . Up selling astronomically. My husband and I were told worse case scenario $80,000. The works. No other option offered nor interested in using my dental insurance. Said it was just a " coupon "( going to report that to my insurance). We live far so we didn't appreciate driving all the way to be told as they were working on my mouth that I'd be an extra $25,000 nonchalantly. That's $105,000 and we never received an itemized recite. We went home threw up tooth particles all night. My husband ended up at Advent Health next day. I'm on my 4th round of antibiotics and losing teeth still. 4 just this week. Insurance doesn't cover other dentist "work". No cash discount. And you don't get your refund they make sure to get out of you day one. $8750. Read the fine print only 30 days from consultation on implants they claim last 50 years. Yet you don't get your money back even before they begin the job. That says it all. No wonder they are always empty. The huge deposits are enough to keep them up and running. They also had an extremely unprofessional hygienist when my husband spoke to the dentist who seems very good( but is she really if she permits her staff to do this? Guess the money is too tempting) and he tells her you have another bad seed and she immediately mentioned who it was. None other than miss happy pants who acts like your new best friend as she's up selling you. She threw me under the bus and actually told my husband not to do my teeth just his. With a mouth full of receded gums due to gingivitis and old silver fillings from adolescence, faced with replacing or crowning a half dozen teeth, I was what Seinfeld comically labeled an "anti-dentite." Then I visited Palencia Dental. Jennifer expertly evaluated my situation and we came up with a game plan. I've had a wicked cross bite that had gone uncorrected and still wasn't willing to be an adult with braces. The staff understood and Nicole proceeded to gently scrape my gums, and get me excited about a water pick. Dr. Stephanie and Sonja gingerly crowned teeth and everyone understood that I would be postponing the braces. Fast forward a year and a half later, and the silver is gone! My gums are as healthy as a 48 year old former smoker's can be and I thought I was ready to be a brace face. I went through the entire braces evaluation with Marcia and Liz. Nicole, the caring hygienist helped me through the hour long preparation of pictures, spacers and molds. I signed a contract and prepaid a hunk of cheddar to get a sweet discount. Then I had second thoughts. The spacers were so uncomfortable and I started to have doubts about my financial situation. I became uneasy with my decision. So I backed out. The next morning I popped in the office to tell them I needed more time. Liz was AMAZING. She said to take my time. She said to pray about it. She reminded me it was a very big decision and not to rush. Liz removed my spacers and put a request in to the accountant to refund my pre-payment. I am even more confident of choice in dentists. I could not agree more with the reviewers who found this office and doctor to be more concerned with selling exorbitantly high priced services and products than the well being of their clientele. When I visited their office around three years ago, I was impressed at how nice I was being treated by staff, however, it became very obvious what the true intent of their demeanor was. I could not believe just how polished and high pressure they were. One sales pitch after another and being passed from one staff member to another to make the sale. I felt just like I was at a car lot. Wow! It was all about realigning my bite, dental implants and a miriad of reasons why these things would improve my smile. My husband was with me and they even talked him into the benefits of their services. I was not convinced. Upon research, I discovered that I did not need my bite realigned (purely cosmetic) and could get implants for much less than their quote. Suffice it to say, I would never trust these people to treat my dog, much less myself. They are out for big bucks $$$$$$$ and don't seem to care about much else. Do your due diligence! read more

You really have to be very careful about listening and accepting any recommendation from Dr. Kinsey and her staff. It may not be based on the best interest of the patient.They tend to administer procedures that is not covered by the insurance. They are not forthcoming with the out-of-pocket cost. I got hit with several out of pocket costs for regular cleaning, and was put on special treatment without knowing. read more

VERY BAD! Only out for money. The insurance person is very bad and not honest. We went to this dentist for a few years. When we started we were in network. As time past the dentist become out of network. No mention, EVEN when quoting work done. Very bad of us to trust this dentist office but never had anything like this happen so you do build a TRUST. Do not with this facility. Also had some work done that in 3 weeks would have been covered by insurance. Do you think told that. NO! So not covered. Talking 3 weeks. They do this everyday. People are busy like us. Yes, maybe we should double check everything but again you hope to built a trust.. I think the most important thing for them is to be friendly.
