This is definitely a restaurant that you can not judge a book by its cover. These little hole in the wall, nothing fancy restaurants are often the ones that are the best. Part of the dining experience is the ambiance, this restaurant is not adorned with sombreros, fancy decorations and menu's. When you enter, there are a couple of tables, a large display case of pastries, and the counter. You feel like you are eating in there home, everyone here is family. It is a very good sign also that the clientele were all Hispanic. The restaurant may not be over the top to look at, but there food is excellent. The owner came from the Guadalajara region of Mexico, so many of his dishes are influenced from his upbringing in that area. I ordered a cheese pupusa, to start with. It was extremely light with a good amount of melted cheese inside. My next dish was a combo, a chile rellano and a chicken enchilada. Both were delicious and stock full of flavor. The enchilada was more like a taquito, the sauce was delicious and on top was Mexican cheese. They make everything from scratch in-house, tortillas, pastries, cakes and all there menu items. You can obviously see a lot of love goes into running this restaurant, and there name Las Paloma's means the doves. Definitely will be back. read more

I came on a girls trip with 6 girls for a bachelorette from Chico. Today, Sunday after the trip came to an end we wanted to have something good for a hang over aka menudo. We all got different items BUT everything was 5 stars. We had the menudo, they bring out hand made tortillas and home made salsa. If you order tacos those are also served with home made tortillas. We were all so impressed and any time I'm in Reno I will NOT leave town without stopping by. For those of you who don't like menudo they don't have posole but they have an albondigas soup. Items ordered today: menudo, tacos and chiles relllenos. The food was so incredible, so we took a torts for the road. Their prices are so cheap it's insane. It's a small restaurant with approx 12 tables and they also make home made Mexican bread and pastries. If you're in town and you love Mexican food this place is as authentic as it gets. Panaderia las Palomas isn't in a fancy part of town, and there certainly isn't anything fancy about the place. There are a few posters and advertisements on the walls, retail items for sale--including mason jars of housemade salsas--and display cases full of baked goods. But I wasn't here for the ambience; I'll take function over form any day. The combined aromas of pastries and spicy hot dishes wafting from the kitchen was completely intoxicating. Though it didn't take long for my order to be completed, waiting in that swirl of scents made my mouth water with anticipation. The drive home was almost as bad, but my car smelled delicious by the time I got there. The menu board is short and sweet. Although nearly everything is available as a combo plate, I chose to skip the rice and beans and focused on items easily shared. I think it's almost a given you should try a torta when visiting a Mexican bakery, and I wasn't disappointed. I'm usually a fan of carnitas or pollo in my sandwich, but carne asada sounded best today. The ingredients were stuffed into one of the biggest bolillo rolls I've seen, with plenty of steak, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and sliced jalapeno ($8.99). The roll was soft and crusty, the meat was tender, and the complete combination made for a sandwich I'd definitely want to repeat. We cut it into sections and there was plenty to go around. Speaking of plenty to go around, a grande order of albondigas soup was easily enough to share amongst four hungry folk ($8.99). Many local variants of this meatball and vegetable classic consist of potato, carrot, onion, and zucchini, with variation here and there. This 32oz serving featured huge chunks of carrot, potato, chayote squash, and six large meatballs, served with a stack of housemade white corn tortillas. The seasoning in the broth and balls were very complimentary and the veggies were cooked just right. A very hearty, meaty, comfort food dish. Also featuring--made fresh daily--housemade tortillas, an order of six street tacos, one for each available meat ($1.49 each, $1 on Fridays). Stuffed with plenty of meat, onion, and cilantro, they were served with extra onion, cilantro, and several lime wedges on the side. Meats included steak, slow-cooked pork, marinated pork, chicken, beef head, and beef tongue. Both pork tacos were good, but the flavor of the marinated pig was best. The chicken was a little dry, and the beef head was on the fatty side, but neither was lacking in flavor. If you're a lover of tongue, this is a place to try. Excellent lengua taco both in texture and flavor. I could get very full very fast on a Friday visit. A pair of chicharron pupusas made me sad, only because I regretted not having purchased more ($2.50 each, $1.25 on Mondays). The seasoned pork and cheese filling was ample, and the texture was right in the Goldilocks zone between being too soft or too crisp. With the addition of mild tomato salsa and above average curtido, they were just right. The lightly fermented slaw was of particular note. The shredded cabbage, carrot, and onion were joined by small slices of mild chile, an addition that made it extra special. There are quite a few places I like for pupusas, but I'd return to this shop just for the extra yummy curtido. read more

Ran into sevies next door and saw this cute lil place. Figured it was destiny and I ordered some papusas to go. Teh lady at the counter was friendly and told me it would be about 7 minutes. All in all I think I waited over 10 minutes for my order, seemed a bit long considering I had been the only one in the place. By the time my order was up there was a small crowd waiting for their food. I don't live too far from the place and I was quite pleased that my dinner was still piping hot when I got home. The papusas were super tasty - definitely worth going back for. The salsa that came with them was a great compliment. The rice and benas were eh, I took a bite of each and left it at that. This is exactly why I love Yelp. I have been driving down Wells and past Panaderia Las Palomas everyday the past few months and hadn't even noticed it before! When I saw they made fresh torillas, I had to stop by for lunch. It was approximately 2pm on a Wednesday and only one other person there ordering. The menu is very simple but has the necessities. Prices are excellent. For some reason, I ended up ordering a torta and tried a pepusa for the first time. Totally a fan of the pepusa! I got the bean and cheese. It was ooey gooey deliciousness. I was sooo excited to try out this spot since it had raving reviews on Yelp but I was disappointed. The food was bland and after me and my boss ate the food we both felt weird. I tried going here a couple times after my initial review, and noticed that the meat wasn't up to the quality of the previous visits. I think if you go later in the day, the meat is re-grilled to heat it up, because the pork al pastor that had been tender when I ordered it in the morning, was pretty tough and chewy when I went at night. The flavor was still OK though. The bread is still awesome because it's baked on site. I asked the owner what the "duro" is, it's like a small taco salad bowl type thing with meat and toppings in it. He gave me a piece of the shell--it was similar to a rice cake, very light and airy--same stuff that I've had in some Mexican chips or cracker type things. I don't know if I'd like a whole slab of it though, not sure how well it would go with the other flavors. So I think the trick here is to go early in the day, it'll pay off because you're getting more freshly cooked meat. read more

Four stars for the torta, which is a Mexican sandwich. Three stars for the pupusa, which is like a burrito made with a corn tortilla instead of flour. I usually stop by La Palomas for quick sweet snacks. They always seem to have fresh items. Some of the other panderias sell baked goods that are too old, but not here. I've been meaning to try the food. There's nine regular items on the menu plus they have some specials. They list tamales but they were out when I went in. So, being a bakery, I decided to get a torta since good bread is important to a good sandwich. And it was a good choice because they use a fresh baked roll. I got it with spicy pork and the meat was delicious, too. Just the right zing with the peppers, too. It didn't overwhelm the sandwich. I can see myself ordering these to go for lunch. They offer a bunch of difference fillings for the torta, including avocado. The pupusa may have been an excellent puposa. I just don't like them usually. The corn tortilla part was first rate. I didn't think much of the pork filling, though. I got a roll for dessert and as usual it was first rate. It's a simple place and I suspect most people get food to go. MMMMM fresh hand-made tortillas! I came here for a lunch date with MT, based on recommendations from yelp, and we were certainly not disappointed! I ordered 3 tacos (make sure to ask for the 3 taco plate with homemade tortillas). I had chorizo, carne asada and al pastor. The tortillas were delicious and larger than your average corn tortilla. They served 2 with each taco, but I only felt that I needed one. The chorizo was a little too salty for me but the carne asada and pastor were spot on. The carne asada was definitely my favorite! The tacos had a nice amount of meat on them, onions and cilantro, and were served with a mortar full of fresh salsa - yum! While I didn't have any pastries while I was there, there was an entire wall case full of them and boy did they look delicious! I highly recommend checking this place out. And a little insiders tip - there's a yummy little palateria (mexican ice cream shop) right next door! read more

My husband was craving some menudo, so we came here trusting all the great reviews about this place. The food was meh. We each ordered menudo and some papusas - 3 chicharron. Our menudo came luke warm and lacked flavor. The papusas had some type of shredded meat in them - not chicharron which is what we ordered. This is a panaderia, but I just had the best bowl of menudo I have ever had there. No posole, (that's hominy for us gringos), just piece after piece of the best trimmed and most tender tripas imaginable swimming in a delicious red broth. The extra large bowl comes with 6 absolutely delightful hand made corn tortillas that dispel all thoughts of missing the posole. There is also a small bowl of chopped onion and cilantro that includes some lime pieces to squeeze for juice. That's not all: the other item is a bowl of wonderful smoky salsa. I put a dab of the salsa on each chunk of tripe and was transported. I don't know if that is the "correct" way to eat menudo, but I loved it! The table also had a shaker of dried oregano. Usually I drown menudo in oregano - that's what I see the locals doing, and usually it gives the dish some needed flavor. But not this time! I put a little shake on at first, and then quickly forgot all about the oregano. Bring a friend and order a couple of extra tortillas, as the bowl is easily big enough for two. One caveat: I was going to wash my bowl down with a real Mexican Coca Cola, but they had the horrid large ones with corn syrup instead the good ones with real sugar. I wanted to explain it to them but I wasn't up to complaining about anything after being blown away by the menudo, plus I wasn't sure that my Spanish was up to the task.
