Toro Bravo is my new top recommendation for anyone visiting Reno or in Reno looking for a delicious date night dinner! I don't know why it took me so long to come here but I already can't wait to go back. My husband and I went here for a date night during happy hour and the food, service and location were all amazing! We tried a margarita and one with mezcal too. So yummy! We ate the ceviche mixto, braised short rib and creamy cilantro rice. It was so much food we were happy to take some for leftovers at home. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection. We were running late for our reservation and called and they were so nice and accommodating with changing our reservation time so easily. I ordered the guava lemon drop cocktail and it was absolutely delicious, very dangerous, lol! For appetizers we ordered the blue cornbread and the papas bravas. The cornbread was good, buttery with honey, though the blue bread is a slightly acquired taste, but no complaints. The papas bravas was sensational! Aggressively seasoned and delicious, it did not last long. I ordered the prime Skirt Steak with flour tortillas, and it was honestly one of the best steaks I've had in Reno surprisingly enough. Simply cooked, perfectly season, excellent taste combined with the shallots and carrots. The staff went above and beyond to make sure my wife had a fantastic birthday. This is been on my list for a while, so I was excited to try it out. We had a group of four. The inside seating was kind of odd, the restaurant itself was spacious, but there were very few tables that were actually physically comfortable for groups of four average sized people. The numerous booths were cute, but really too small for four people. there were quite a few larger tables for eight or 10 people. Four four , It's a lot of cozy togetherness, which is probably fine for a family, but not for other circumstances. The halibut entrée was very good. The short ribs were kind of average. The other two guests were mixed in their review of the entrées as well. Our our server was super nice , attentive and knowledgeable - while he was with us - but would disappear for long periods of time such that we had to get up to get their attention several times to get additional items. The restaurant was not particularly crowded, but there was something going on at another nearby table - perhaps a VIP, family friends or owner (?) that attracted a gathering of several servers for long periods of time, so it was hard to get our servers attention. I'd be surprised if that was a common scenario, but it happened while we were there. Ambient noise was fine . Prices were on the higher side for my expectation, but the presentation was very nice. It was pretty good, would probably do 3 1/2 stars if I could, but it definitely isn't equal to the various four stars I've rated locally. read more

We came here for an early Mother's Day dinner with the four of us. We had reservations, HIGHLY recommend getting reservations. We were seated right away. This is such a cozy and unique restaurant. Everything we ordered was something I had never tried before. We started with cocktails. They have a big variety of margaritas, beer, and other signature drinks. For our appetizers we ordered the blue corn bread which is served on a mini cast iron skillet. This corn bread is sweet, but also has some spicy chili flavor. We shared the fish ceviche with tuna. It was so fresh and the flavors were out of this world. Tangy, sour, a little spicy. For my main I went with the special for that weekend which was the Sea Bass. So flaky and buttery. I've been wanting to try this place for a while now and was finally able to make it in recently for brunch. I can't believe what I've been missing out on! Toro Bravo is AMAZING. We had Tamal de Cameron (I'm usually not a huge shrimp fan but oh my goodness, this dish was so good and definitely one of my favorites here), beef empanadas (great flavor), carrots with goat cheese (another favorite, it was seasoned so well; I would eat carrots every day if they were made like this), ceviche de pescado (super fresh fish and ingredients), braised beef tacos with cilantro rice (also absolutely delightful, full of flavor, favorite as well and paired amazing with the cilantro rice), and for dessert we had the churro cake (perfectly sweet). The staff was so friendly and food came out really quickly. The decor inside was adorable and modern, comfortable seating and you have the option to sit outside overlooking the Truckee. What a wonderful restaurant on the river walk. We chose to sit outside and enjoy a picture perfect day. The staff was very attentive and kind. We tried a variety of items on the menu: guacamole, chorizo requesón, pork shank, tostada de arrachera, chicken empanadas, cilantro rice, and short ribs. Everything met or exceeded my expectations. The standout dishes for me were the chorizo requesón, cilantro rice, short ribs, and pork shank--each was flavorful and well-executed. The guacamole and tostada were solid and had the classic flavors you'd expect. My toddler especially loved the cilantro rice, tortilla chips, chorizo requesón, and short ribs, which was a big win. Admittedly, this review is insaaanely overdue because I forgot to check-in which was a rookie mistake. I visited Reno in August of 2025 and we came here for a team dinner that was spectacular! Toro Bravo is in a lovely part of Reno right along a small canal type body of water with other fun local businesses nearby. Stepping inside from the summer heat was very welcoming with dim lighting and generous AC. The vibes in here definitely scream date night but it was also great for our group of colleagues for a fun team dinner before a long day of work. We ordered a myriad of dishes for the table to try and pretty much all of them were a standout. Blue Corn Bread - this was a table favorite, easily. A light and delicious corn bread doused in hot honey and orange butter, this had so much flavor. And I'm not normally one for sweet dishes, but the hot honey was the perfect balance that had me going back for more. Papas Bravas - absolutely delicious and that jalapeno aioli was on point! Creamy Cilantro Rice - I'm a sucker for cilantro and this was the perfect side dish to compliment the rest of everything that we had. 10/10! Roasted Octopus - This was either my first or second experience with octopus and I was truthfully a little worried. My biggest qualm was how the texture was going to be but I was pleasantly surprised at how well this was executed. I actually kept going back for more bites! Paella - Last but not least, their paella was the perfect hearty main dish for us to split amongst the group. The depth of flavor was perfect and everything tasted fresh and of great quality. I have visited Toro Bravo five times. The first three times were incredible and we were so happy to have discovered this place. The last two times were not great at all. On my last visit, which happened to be my birthday, I had made reservations for my party of four at 6pm. We were seated and given water and what they consider to be chips (they are baked corn tortillas - not our favorite, but its fine). Our server came and we gave her our appetizer order which was papas bravas (these are delicious), guacamole (would be better if the "chips" were good, and two orders of the queso asado because this is our absolute favorite thing they have on the menu. This is served with tortillas and it is outstanding. Our appetizers are delivered and what was brought to us is definitely not the queso asado, even though our server is adamant that it is. We had to basically argue with her that what she served us is not what we ordered, only for her to leave and come back with some story about how she ordered us the lunch queso instead because the buttons are close to each other. So the queso finally arrives and because it was rushed, it was not as outstanding as it usually is, but we are starving, so we eat it anyway. For entrees my husband and I decided to share the prime skirt steak cooked medium, my brother ordered the NY steak cooked medium rare and my dad ordered the oven roasted chicken. The skirt steak was way over cooked and lacked any flavor and was so tough. This is typically a well seasoned piece of meat and what we received was not that at all. My dad stopped eating his chicken a few bites in, and when we questioned him, he stated his chicken was not cooked all the way and he had lost his appetite. No one checked in on us for a long time, we didn't even receive refills on our waters. We tell our server, who by this point is pretty fed up with our table in general, and she sends over the manager who took the chicken off the bill. We are not the type who want to complain about the entire experience so we just paid our very expensive check $244 plus tip and left so disappointed. We finally walked out of the restaurant at 7:45PM, almost two hours after we had been seated. The weekend prior to this, my husband wanted to treat me to brunch, and since we had 3 positive experiences prior, we decided to give Toro Bravo a shot. An online menu from a month earlier listed a tres leches french toast and my heart was set. We arrived and they changed the brunch menu, they no longer offer the tres leches french toast. I ordered the new York steak (cooked medium) and eggs, my husband had the short rib machaca. The steak was so well done my server asked if she could replace it. I was not about to let an animal lose its life for nothing, so I ate what I could, and she discounted our check. My husband said his machaca was dry and needed some flavor/salt/salsa anything to make it better. I am not sure what has happened, if they are training new cooks, lack management oversight or if they just don't care anymore. I'll be taking a long break from this place, it's not worth the price anymore. read more

We started out lobster empanadas and papas bravas, and both were delicious. The hamachi ceviche had just the right amount of kick as well. My stars though were the ribeye special and octopus. Sleek modern interior and gorgeous riverfront location, I was impressed walking into Toro Bravo and excited that downtown has a beautiful restaurant! Happy hour is Monday through Thursday 3-6pm and it's a great deal! The margaritas are very flavorful, my favorite was the mango lucha marg. The papas bravas are a must order- the potatoes are so tender and delicious and perfectly cooked! My favorite bite. The quesobirria was filling but I think the mexcal ones are better, can't put my finger on it but these were a little less flavorful and smaller and drier. Toro Bravo is a collab between mexcal and la condesa two of my other favorite restaurants in town! The brussels sprouts were just ok and the chorizo requeson I thought would have way more flavor, it was bland and the chorizo was not spicy or interesting it got overpowered by the richness and blandness of the ricotta! Overall I enjoyed the experience and will definitely be back for happy hour prices, but if I paid full price for that quantity and type of food ($16 for the requeson) I would be disappointed! The service was phenomenal and we loved the ambiance. It's a Mexican steakhouse, so we weren't sure what to expect, but it is was what we expected from the ambiance of any traditional steakhouse. We were celebrating a birthday and did our small gift exchange. We skipped out on appetizers since we were snacking on tostadas and salsa with our cocktails. We were excited about the drinks. I tried El Chapo Lo-era their prickly pear margarita and later tried Angel de humo- their pineapple infused mezcal with tajin on the rim. I don't know that I would order the prickly pear cocktail on my next trip back here, but the pineapple mezcal is a no brainer for next time. The girls ordered martinis and a variety of cocktails the three hours we were here. I ordered the short ribs and a tostada. The short ribs were super tender and it was a great recommendation. My friends ordered the paella, a skirt steak, tostadas, lamb shank, and pork shank. We also ordered brussel sprouts and potatoes au gratin for the table. We stopped by this place for Happy Hour. We decided to park at the Eldorado for free and then walk over a few blocks, rather than paying for street parking. It wasn't too busy on a Wednesday afternoon, but I made a reservation just in case. It was very easy to do with Yelp. We ordered the Papas Bravas, Oven Roasted Cauliflower, Charred Brussels Sprouts, Street Tacos, Prime Asada Tostaditas, and Quesabirrias. For drinks, we ordered the Toro Bravo, Paloma Mia, Sangre Del Toro, and Flor De Amor. The drinks came out pretty fast, same with the food. Drinks tasted pretty good, and they were $9 each - everything on the Happy Hour menu was $9 each. I enjoyed the Flor De Amor. The food was okay for me. Out of everything, I liked the taste of the brussels sprouts, papas bravas, and quesabirria. The street tacos and the tostada were okay. The meat didn't have much flavor? And it was hard to chew one of the pieces; I had to spit it out after chewing for a few minutes. Overall, it wasn't too bad of an experience, but there are better Happy Hours out there. read more

I've been three times now, once for brunch, once for happy hour, and once for dinner (The full gamut!). First time was dinner, and within the first month of opening. One of the dishes was good, and one kind of fell flat (beet salad). It felt disjointed like it was two halves of two different dishes. I'm willing to call it a new menu issue, and use my more recent experiences for rating in this review. When I went for brunch I got a chicken Birra taco and liked it a lot. I'm trying to cut-out red meat, so having chicken as an option is appreciated! Also getting to hang out on the patio looking out on the river was great. Finally I just recently went for happy hour, and I can say that like it's kindred restaurant La Condessa it has an awesome happy hour. A little on the pricey side, but the quality, and options mean that it's still a great deal. Also it runs until 3-6pm mon-thur, which makes it even better. Too many happy hour places end at 5pm, making it hard for me to make it on time due to me slightly long commute. Our server was borrowed from one of the other restaurants, but other than being a little unfamiliar with the menu he gave great service. Overall Toro Bravo is a great little spot downtown that I will be looking forward to revisiting. read more

S&*t happens. I get that. Its not how you fall but how you rise. On this evening I ordered the Beef Short Ribs on the recommendation of our friend. The dish was presented beautifully with a generous portion of beef as the center piece. Unfortunately, on this evening this particular cut of beef was exceptionally tough and virtually impossible to eat. We called over the waitress, explaining the situation. She apologized profusely offering alternatives on how they could "make it right". I opted to replace the Short Ribs with the Skirt Steak. Which was perfect. I ordered the Skirt Steak as my replacement order as it was what my wife ordered and frankly it looked amazing. The steak was cooked to absolute perfection, buttery, flavorful and delicious. I don't often comment about the tortillas that come with a meal, but the tortillas provided by Toro Bravo were next level. A touch thicker than your mass produced variety, their tortillas were just perfection. We ordered the creamy cilantro rice. Beautifully presented, I have to admit this was much better than I was expecting. Rich and flavorful. A perfect accompaniment to our mains. Our friend ordered the Paella, a spanish classic. Served with a bounty of seafood (calimari, shrimp, mussels, pieces of fresh fish), served over a bed of seasoned rice. Perfect execution. While the evening started a bit rough, Toro Bravo did everything in their power to make it right. Bravo, Toro Bravo! I absolutely loved La Condesa the last time I was in Reno and so when I mentioned it to a local friend, he recommended Toro Bravo for our group dinner. And wow, I didn't think I could be blown away a second time by the same owners, but Toro Bravo exceeded my expectations. Our group ordered the following to share: Papas bravas $12 Ceviche mixto $28 Blue corn bread $13 Creamy cilantro rice $12 Charcoal roasted Spanish octopus $44 Seafood paella $47 Charred Brussels sprouts $16 Churro cake $14 Pineapple bread pudding $14 This was definitely one of my favorite meals recently if not, to date! Everything was excellent, from the cocktails and apps to the entrees and dessert. I loved the octopus at La Condesa and loved Toro Bravo's just as much. Was pretty anxious to try Toro Bravo and finally checked it out with some great foodie friends of mine. Heard a lot of mixed reviews but the online menu was intriguing and I thought the happy hour menu sounded fun. I had heard their ceviche was on point and the online photos looked legit. Our waitress wanted our orders yesterday however, having never been, I wanted time enough to peruse the menu. She dropped some tortillla chips and a couple very tasty salsas but no plates. We waited and waited and finally got her attention. The service was mediocre and I hate to feel like I'm trying to flag down a taxi in NYC to get simple requests responded to but that's kinda how it felt throughout the meal. We ordered a couple different ceviches and they were beautiful and well portioned. The Mixto ceviche lacked a little. Could have definitely benefited having more octopus. I found two small pieces. Nice sauce in both the fish ceviche and the mixed ceviche. One green sauced, one red sauced. Very pretty presentation for both. The happy hour tacos were tasty but not remarkable and the dish I was most anxious to try was the biggest disappointment for me. The Quesabirrias and consommé lacked the familiar flavor I'm used to and the crusty cheese exterior was missing entirely. Ennui..... Uhhh yeah. Thats a FIVE from me y'all. This is the type of dining Reno has been craving for so long and I couldn't think of two better chef/owners to make this one a reality. If you're coming to TB, come hungry y and bring your crew because this menu is meant for sharing and two people just ain't enough. Personal recommendation 6+ for maximum fun. Start with a cocktail and make it agave. I enjoyed a spicy pineapple Mezcal cocktail and it was delightful, with the perfect balance of sweet, sour and spicy kick. There were at least two other drinks that spoke to me and friends of the table ordered those so I was fortunately able to try them myself, and they were delightful as well. On the food front if it sounds good, simply order it and if it sounds less interesting to you order it also because it's probably going to prove you wrong when it arrives. We sampled so much and all of it slapped. Halibut ceviche, the blue cornbread, prime New York cooked to a wonderful medium rare, papas bravas, paella, and octopus, all devoured and some duplicated because they were so damn delicious. We then had the beans! These are a MUST and ridiculously good! I know. Trust me! The potato gratin was also a superb version of this dish too and a nice way to have potatoes at this restaurant. I took My husband on a date night and we ended up here which I am so glad we did. I ordered a tequila Mezcal beverage and we ordered the garlic cremini mushroom appetizer for our main dish. The drink, I didn't realize that I did not like the flavor of Mezcal so the waitress was very kind and she replaced it with a mojito which was super nice of her to do. My husband's steak literally melted in your mouth. The perfect blacken char on the outside of the steak and the most amazing cook on the inside. When I say it melted in your mouth I barely had to chew which is shocking since I do not go cheap when it comes to making my own steak. I buy very high quality meat and I know how to cook a really good steak but I will have to come back here from time to time to get their steak. I got the freshest ceviche dish it also came with fresh handmade corn tortillas that were perfectly fried. The ceviche sauce had a little spice kick to it but still very refreshing. Oh and my husband's steak dinner also came with grilled onions and pickled onions. Almost like a fajita style. It came with handmade fresh corn tortillas. The service was spot on. Our server was super nice and the food came out so quick. When our server came to gather our plates a bus boy came up right away and took care of it. I was very impressed by this. All the margaritas on happy hour were great. I also tried the Toro Bravo (watermelon), Chapo Lo-era (prickly pear) and El Malo (Mezcal). We got the papas bravas to start since all employees recommended it them. They were not spicy but very delicious. The sauce on them was a smoked jalapeño aioli. The guacamole was good too and very shareable sizes. We then shared the quesabirrias, vegan ceviche and the prime asada tostaditas. Hands down the best choice was the quesabirria. If you want to experience Michelin level molecular gastronomy with a view of the river this is your place! The combination of two of the top Latin inspired restaurants is amazing. The service we had during lunch was legendary, it was perfect. Every single appetizer and entrée was 12/10. The plating along with the taste, whether they were sweet or savory. The Asada tostada was the king of the show. So many different flavors and packed with enough meat to fill up a big back guy like me. It really should be shared with two people. Toro Bravo is an upscale restaurant located downtown on the Truckee River Walk and has both inside and outside patio dining overlooking the river as it flows through downtown. My visit was for dinner earlier this week and I took advantage of the weather and view to sit outside, I ordered the Empanadas de Mariscos for $18. The three warm seafood empanadas arrived shortly thereafter and were delicious especially with the supplied salsa crema to pour over. The salsa wasn't hot but added a nice touch spooned onto the empanadas. This is listed as an appetizer dish and not being too hungry was enough to satisfy me. Table service was good too. Lunch on a Sunday and after reading all of the great reviews and loving La Condesa, I was a bit disappointed. We started off with a bland array of salsa and over fried tostada chips that surprisingly were a charged item. My son had the chilaquiles that didn't look very appetizing. I ordered the shrimp tamale in corn polenta which was bland tasting. Service was prompt and pleasant. We sat outside which is always nice with a Truckee River view. I expected more. May give dinner a try, but there are other choices, especially it's sister, La Condesa. read more

I like the location of Toro Bravo. It is situated by the Truckee River on Sierra St. It has a very accommodating atmosphere with friendly helpful staff staff. Toro Bravo has taken Mexican cuisine to a new level. It appears to me their ranking amongst Reno's best restaurants is around the corner. The menu, in my opinion, needs to be expanded to include more Mexican inspired side dishes. The wine list is short and, not surprising, has mostly unfamiliar foreign wines. Perhaps this may be attributed to growing pains. The food is excellent, a tribute to their well trained chefs. I had a a very generous piece of beef called "Picaña' (I believe that is spelled properly). I ordered it medium rare and medium rare it was. The meat was thick, with bits of buttery fat mostly at the ends. It was delectable, grilled to perfection situated on top of scrumptious potatoes. The side of creamy cilantro rice with bits of a mellow cheese was the best I have ever had. I also had the house made corn tortillas. Prior to our meal one of the employees brought us a bowlful of toasted small corn tortillas a green and a red salsa. Both salsa were not very spicy but they were gourmet quality - strained and a velvety smooth texture. All this and a recommendation by the manager for a 2022 bottle of Frog's Leap, Zinfandel. The ceviche was delicious and fresh with bright citrus and tender squares of fish. Steak also was a high point. The service was really friendly with frequent touch points. And you just can't beat a view of the Truckee River in downtown Reno. read more
