Two stars because at least I could eat the food. I wanted a new spot to eat breakfast that wasn't iHop. In Chicago, it almost seems wrong to eat at a chain, especially one as mediocre as iHop. We really wanted this place to be better, but it just isn't. Maybe in Wisconsin (where this place originated) this sort of quality is stand out, but not in Chicago. I'll start with service it mostly sucked. The hostess at the front was very pleasant and kind. She disappeared to find a table for us and came back almost immediately to set us. Nice! That's the limit of service we got. Our waiter was short, rude, and seemed annoyed at our presence. The other staff seemed like they hated their lives and were equally as unaccommodating. We ordered coffee and not only was it cold, but they didn't even ask us to refill it once (not that we wanted more, more on that to come). Then, when we finally couldn't take it anymore we eventually had to ask another waiter to track down our waiter for the check that eventually came. One star for service. The atmosphere: as our beloved president would say (in your best Trump voice), "this is a terrible, terrible place." The floor was disgusting, like, they didn't even sweep from the last three tables who ate there before us. The high chair for my toddler was grimy, not dirty, grimy. And the atmosphere is stale. Open, impersonal, ugly, and to my wife's point, who puts giant pictures of cheap looking diner food on the walls? 'Sad.' (Trump voice again). One star for atmosphere/cleanliness. Now the food. Meh. At least I could eat it. That's why two stars not one. First tip: DON'T ORDER THE COFFEE! It's over $3, and it comes to you cold and just tastes nasty. They claim it's Kona - I've had Kona, that wasn't Kona. Maybe some blend of nasty crap where they throw one Kona bean in it and call it Kona, but that doesn't count in my book. The strawberry waffle was good. Nothing mind blowing, but it was good. The Huevos Rancheros always also decent, again, I've certainly had better but this wasn't terrible. Maybe three stars for food. A few positives for the kiddos to leave you with, they had these little wax strip toys that bend and stick that my 1.5 year old loved, and the little kids cup of water was nice to have for him too. They had a high chair and kids eat free from 7-9am (we weren't there for that sadly). Anyways, all that said, it's certainly not a new go-to for us, and we more than likely won't go back. I came here because of the reviews, however, this place is simply mediocre. It all started with a cup of Joe, first sip tasted like a wet sock. Yes, I was just as disgusted as you are reading this. I expected more from this place based off the reviews, I must say that I am disappointed. The service was just okay, not much of an interaction with the waiter. Because I'm a Basic Bitch these days with my low-carb diet, I said I'd pass on the hash browns AND pancakes that come with. Added a side of tomatoes. Total came out to $15. No, I wasn't expecting them to give me the sliced tomatoes for free but...yeah it was just a stupid order on my part. For $15, the omelet was dry and limp. And they forgot the mushroom sauce (I did takeout to bring back to my workplace). I called, twice, to see if I could swing back to pick up a side of sauce or get a credit of some sort for next time, but no answer either time. Went to place & pickup an order for Postmates. After 10 mins a lady took my order with the help of the bartender. Both ladies said about 15 mins. Cool. I go to my car and come back 20 mins later. After standing around for about 5 mins the bartender was free so I asked if she had an ETA On the Postmates order. Before I could even complete the sentence a guy walking by interrupts saying "we're too busy for takeout it'll be a while." It was so rude and dismissive. He didn't even look at me or ask anything about what/when I ordered. I'd already been there over 20 mins. He then (back by the kitchen area) says again "we're busy. It'll be a while." All I was asking for was an ETA. And I asked it once. I canceled the order and told the bartender (who informed me that the guy was the Owner) to let him know the order was canceled. Now as a black woman, whenever a white man reacts in that manner, it's always in my mind - is it because I'm a black woman? Is it because I'm a woman? Would he have been that rude and dismissive to a white man? In any case, I will never spend a penny at Pancake Cafe in Lakeview. read more

Oh boy, where to start with this place...I should have seen the red flags when I saw the Budweiser neon sign in the window. What kind of "pancake cafe" has a Budweiser sign in the window? Hmm... My friends and I went there because they had 3 gift cards for the place which we later found out we could only use 1 per table. This wouldn't be that much of an issue if my friends hadn't visited once in the past and used multiple gift cards with no problem. They warned me that the food wasn't very good, but they wanted to go just to use the gift cards....the gift card situation was a whole fiasco, but I wasn't prepared for how bad the food was. When it comes to the food, you're better off visiting your high school cafeteria for breakfast because the food is bland as all hell. I ordered the cinnamon french toast and It was basically mediocre french toast with a little bit of cinnamon cream in the middle. The worst thing though, the coffee wasn't even good. I usually expect that a brunch place at least has good coffee even if their food sucks, But this place disappointed in that department as well with their watered down coffee. I ended up going to Starbucks 20 minutes after eating here to wash away the memory of their stale watery coffee and bad food. Needless to say, I won't be returning to this place. read more

This was a perfect spot to go to for brunch in Boystown! The wait staff was friendly, especially the manager. We had a training server and he did a great job. It was reasonably priced and the portions were so large!! I had many leftovers to take home and they were just as good the second time. The only cream for the coffee was half and half, no flavors. We sat on the cafe side, and did not know we could order drinks such as mimosas or bloody mary's for breakfast as well. The manager told us they were redesigning the front of the menu for the cafe side to add drinks so it will be more well-advertised! Definitely a good move! First time ordering from here on Grubhub. I chose it because the 4.5 star rating. I don't know if they were having a bad day today or if this is the norm. We ordered huevos rancheros and the tortillas were pretty much buried under the food. I ordered huevos rancheros not chilaquiles, everything was smothered in rubbery cheese and it was just not a good dish at all. We also ordered pancakes and they were also rubbery not the soft fluffy kind you would expect from a place that has Pancake in their name. I did like one item the banana French toast. The final tab was $74 for breakfast and it was completely not worth it. Sorry but this is the first and last time I order from here. Also not included in my order, a fruit cup, butter or syrup for the pancakes and French toast and utensils. read more

I just had brunch there today. The default tip they put is 20, 25, 28% instead of the regular 15, 18, 20%. Mind you it is a brunch place not a dinner place. If you want your server to make more, pay them more, don't do that to your customer. read more

Mom liked the coffee, the German pancakes are delish, especially if your server remembers to bring the lemon so you can squeeze it on it. Unfortunately, our service wasn't the best even though we were his only table for the first half of our visit. He seemed annoyed that we were there. Other servers had to step in and help out. We had to ask another server for lemon for the first pancake, by the time we put it on, pancake was cool. Too bad because we had to wait 25 mins for it to bake :( . He never even came back to give the check or check on us. Someone saw me looking around for a looong time and came to ask if everything was ok, I begged her for the check so I could get out of there. I popped in and tried their spinach crêpes; very good. I first fell in love with potato pancakes in 1997, when my friend Frannie Rosenberg (and her mother) made some for me and my ex (and still dear friend) Scott. Ever since, whenever I tried them in diners or restaurants, they simply weren't as good as those homemade ones... but today, at Pancake Café... their potato pancakes are literally the BEST I've EVER had! My server's name was Wally (if memory serves)... and he took good care of me. I'll most certainly be back when I'm in the area. I don't know why I kept returning but I'm done with this place. Have visited for breakfast 3 times, each on the weekend. Each visit, the restaurant was not relatively busy with plenty of open seats. Each visit, the service was very slow to the point of having 2 different servers apologize for waiting (not for food but for their attention.) The food I've tried was mediocre at best; 3 different omelettes each literally raw; raw onion, uncooked egg, cold cheese shreds, etc. A fine place if you just don't care and just want some very basic food. read more

Man, if this place isn't the exact definition of mediocre, I don't know what is. When this place opened up in the space formerly occupied by Horizon Cafe, I figured it would have to be an improvement, because Horizon was very... adequate. Sadly, this place, too, is merely adequate. That's disappointing, because I was looking forward to this place opening for MONTHS, and to make sure I wasn't jumping the gun on my judgments, I've eaten here five or six times, trying out various menu offerings. I figured a pancake place brazen enough to open right across the street from IHOP would have to focus on a different market segment, and I assumed it would be fancier and offered at a premium (i.e., good but expensive). I was okay with that. I would happily pay more for a high-quality breakfast place within walking distance of home. That's not what this is. This is the sort of place where everything comes out of a can (or tastes like it does). After it comes out of that can, it is assembled by people who think of themselves as factory workers, not as cooks. At the very least, you'd think a place that has "pancake" in its name would offer good pancakes, but you'd be mistaken. The pancakes here all taste weird and the texture is unpleasantly chewy/doughy. The crepes are also problematic, because they put sugar in the crepe batter; I guess that would work for the sweet crepes, but I ordered savory crepes, and mushroom filling on sweet crepes is... not appetizing. If you want your food to be the culinary equivalent of the color beige, I suppose this is the place to go, but if you're wanting food that tastes good and has an appealing texture, you may need to find other options. read more

The good: the food is really nice. Scrambled eggs and omelets are fluffy and flavorful. The bad is that they did not have my pickup order ready when promised; it took another 15 minutes to get my order and the staff was not really communicative about the status of it. Both of our entrees (a Denver omelet and the smoked ham and eggs), which were supposed to come with pancakes, did not. They didn't include utensils or napkins in the order. They might benefit from some additional training. They're new in the neighborhood, so I can forgive it and I'll give them another shot, but it definitely shows in their disorganization. I hope that in a month or two I'll be able to update this with a higher review, because the potential is there for sure. read more

I went there today for my lunch break and it was a grad opening day! As I walked in I was greeted by the pleasant hostess and seated right away. My server, Edwin (yes, I finally remembered the name!!!) showed up few moments later. I told him that I am on my lunch break and my time is kinda limited. He was great help! Since it was my first time and I didn't know anything about this place I asked him a lot of questions from the history place to what is his favorite item on the menu. He has very knowledgeable and didn't even get annoyed with me (of course all of that was done for my first time check in purpose on yelp, ha!). So, this breakfast place came to us from Wisconsin, where they got 4 different location (for Wisconsin is says a lot) and this is their first location in Chicago. Good thing they're planning on opening more since I loved this place! First of all their food menu is impressive! You have a choice of: eggs Benedict, All French Toast, Belgium Waffles, Pancakes, Crepes, sandwich, salads, 5 egg (yes, you read it right! 5) backed omelets, just eggs, plus South of the Border, All Time Favorites and Oven Specialties!!! My choose was Spinach Crepe (spinach, mushroom and cheese topped with hollandaise sauce) YUM! And coffee which turned out to be bottomless (for $3 and a change!). My order came very fast and my server, Edwin checked on me regularly to make sure I was happy with everything. Totally will be back many times to try the rest of the menu! read more

The amount of food you get here is INSANE! The omlet I had has 5 eggs, plus 3 pancakes (which are amazing and perfectly browned) and a big helping of hash browns. The staff is engaging and friendly. Definitely a better option than that other place across the street. The seating area is nice and open with plenty of room. read more
