food i told moms about a holy trinity of food cultures on my mind tonight: italian, french, and hispanic, with a mexican specificity. the first because she mentioned planning to cook pasta tonight, the second because of the name of the yelp elite tulsa yelpies awards location, and the third because of an intention for appreciating the inviting host of the former from the perspective of a follower striving for collaboration thru jestful apology. nevertheless, that to say, despite the religiosity within that previous comparison to our holy trinity, the bakery does not promote any certain religion, with the christmas tree i'd seen on the way out the shop featuring a variety of decorations and an assortment of complementary holiday decor. that is jumping ahead, though, so please let me get into the sweets, some toward which i was already gravitating from previous visits, and some new or at least nostalgic, with the former including a churro with red filling, i believe strawberry, and empanada with apple filling, and a tricolor cookie with sugar sprinkle encompassing the latter. it is worth mentioning, too, the tricolor cookie delivers me reminisccence on the three most primary colors of the mexican flag, although, of course, the green, white, and red are not exactly clear in the cookie, with the green close, the white moreso a browning beige, and the red having notes of pink hue. service the service was respectful and friendly, with one observation of mine being that the sign at the front counter about employment opportunity was in english, with larger letters than the spanish writing below it. i'm grateful for that relative position because, as a spanish as second language student, i'm usually hesitant to apply or engage with a bilingual posting if the spanish is its primary language. and pancho anaya, being the bridge between the mexican american community of tulsa and other citizens, including european americans, like me, that it has represented for as long as i remember. and your boy need a job, enuff typing, well soon, dramatic pause ambiance clean, first word that comes, que signica lindo en español. ya tiene el dulce de tres colores, ¿quién quiere? read more

I stopped by here a couple of Sunday's ago with my wife. We were looking for a coffee shop somewhat close to the airport and I was having trouble finding one. However I did see that Pancho Anaya Mexican Bakery offered coffee and who doesn't like heading to a bakery? I can't say that I have ever been in a Mexican bakery before and so I didn't know what to expect. This bakery is located in what seemed to be a more industrial part of the city and was quite large. Immediately upon walking inside you are able to see a small seating area off to the left. To the right is where the good stuff is as they have pastries and baked goods galore all presented in clear cabinets. The way that it works here is that you grab a cafeteria tray lined with what looks like parchment paper and go around opening the cabinets and putting whatever you choose onto your tray with tongs. If I remember correctly everything that I saw here cost .68 making it a crazy value, at least to me. They have a great selection as well and my wife and I left the store with a strawberry churro, pineapple empanada and a Feite Figura (a pastry filled with chocolate). Oh yeah, I did get a coffee too but by the time we had finished looking around I had almost forgot about it. In any case the coffee that I had here was really good, especially for the price. It wasn't anything crazy but had a strong and smooth flavor which was exactly what I was looking for. As for the baked goods they were also quite good. I have never had a fruit filled churro before and even the strawberry flavoring tasted a little fake (I expected this at that price) they did well to use an amount that gave a good flavor without taking over the churro. It was the pineapple empanada which I really enjoyed though. The outside shell of it had a good flavor to it while the pineapple portion was tasty as well. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Both my wife and I absolutely loved this place and I imagine we would visit it quite frequently if we lived closer. read more

I like how all the Pancho Anaya bakeries follow the same pattern; they're all uniform which is great! I don't have to choose between them, they're all equally as awesome. Huge space. Large variety of bread and sweet stuffs. Several Mexican products for sale. Yummy cakes... Bread is such a tradition and I love that they highlight that it has been a family business for 5 generations. That's a long time! Walk in, grab a tray and some tongs since it's a self service place- if you have questions about what fillings are in what pastries, don't be shy and just ask! The employees are happy and friendly - bonus points if you speak Spanish - they love that! My favorite items are the churros - filled with strawberry jelly or bavarian cream (something similar), their peanut butter cookies, their bright pink sugar cookies, and their sugared donuts. Think of a glazed donut from Daylight - then double its size and instead of glaze, they roll in sugar. Why don't other donut shops make these? I don't want a sugared cake donut, I want the raised sugared one! Do yourself a favor and go here!! How can I forget the Tres Leches? Buy a tres leches cake parfait cup - chocolate or vanilla cake, tres leches sauce, and whipped cream. Or order a cake - different sizes- can even get a jelly filling in the larger cakes. read more

So yummy! This is my first visit to this location and everything about it is perfect. The place is clean, the service was warm and friendly, and all of the goods were clearly labeled and plentiful. As always, I recommend the jalapeño cream cheese croissant and the churros, but everything is delicious. read more

I found this place on Yelp while looking for somewhere to get decent breakfast before driving from Tulsa to Arkansas - honestly if you're near the Tulsa airport, look no further. I would call it a hole in the wall, but it's actually a massive building in a fairly vacant lot not very far from the highway. This is a huge bakery with seriously good Latin American baked goods! You walk in, take a tray and fill it with whatever your heart desires - and there is a lot to choose from! The only downside is they don't have all that much savory selection, but everything I tried there was well worth it. It's super cheap and the people who work there are so incredibly nice - the cashier even asked me if I'm Colombian because my Spanish is so good (she got a sizable tip for this comment). read more

I'm so happy to be back on Tulsa, and PA is one of those reasons! We missed this wonderful bakery when we moved. Their new location (new to us, that is) on Garnett is triple the original location's size from what I can tell. There is a huge area of artwork, tables, and SPACE to sit and relax. There seems to be a wider assortment of goodies, now, too! On our first trip back, I picked out fresh buttered bolillos, an assortment of yummy cookies (they appeal to the eye as well as the tastebuds/stomach) one of my favorite cream cheese and Jalapeño crescents, some bread pudding, and a slice of coconut treat. The store was very clean, well stocked with fresh bakery items, and just smelled wonderful! Also, as a perk for checking in there, I get a free drink (specified)!!! My husband and I played a game this time: 5 minutes and $10. It was so easy to shop in there, that I made it out in under 5 minutes. The cashier chuckled at my $10 limit, and smiled when she saw how excited I was that I could get more than I originally picked out. $9.18 will keep us happy for a few days I cannot tell you just how happy I was to shop in PA again. I have lived by Pancho Anaya for 3 years and I am ashamed that it took me so long to finally try it out. Have you ever met someone and thought to yourself, "I feel like I've known you my whole life"? If so, go here and tell me you don't experience the same feeling. Sweets are usually tricky for me, I either really like them or they're just too much. Pancho Anaya's Mexican pastries are the perfect balance of sweetness to satisfy every taste bud on your body. "Your body? You only have taste buds on your tongue, Bridget...?" Well maybe, but I tasted how good these treats were as soon as I picked them up. They are absolutely scrumptious. I couldn't pick a more fitting word. The bakery is very clean, spacious, and unique compared to other bakeries. The pastries are all lined up in a U-shape, you grab a tray and tongs and just go around and select your goods then pay for them up front. (That's a big plus for any introverts out there.) they have fresh made bread that you can pick up as well. The staff were very friendly. My girlfriend got a Columbian coffee and I asked her how it was, she said "really good." I mean come on, how much more straight to the point can you get? I'll be back next time to try the tres leches cakes they have. Also if you aren't yet convinced, their pastries are incredibly treat ranging from 64 cents to under $2. This place is great! Great servide! Great prices! Great breads and sweets! So much selection. It took me back to childhood when I would when my mother would take my brother and I to go get some fresh from the oven butter rolls. Pancho Anaya have' assorted provolon, cakes, pastries and my personal fave orejas (most bakeries use the French - palmier) and a whole lot more. You're provided with a tray lined with wax paper, and a pair of tongs to select your own cookies and pastries. Seriously if you have a sweet tooth then Pancho Anaya is the place. They have Tres Leches cake in vanilla or chocolate. They will also make you a birthday cake (if you call in advance) or a cake for any occasion. You can even enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with your pastry. The shop at Admiral and Lewis is up and coming development area. The shop on Garnett near Admiral unless you're looking for it can easily be missed when driving but there is a large Pancho Anaya sign out front near the road and Pancho Anaya is written largely on the building as well. If you've never been to either put Pancho Anaya on your "Things to do in Tulsa" list. read more
