A mountain of white steamed rice with a few pieces of Beijing Beef. This is how it was served.
    Mariam H.

I had nothing but feelings after grumpily agreeing to eat Panda for lunch today. My complaint isn't about the quality of food, which was very tasty, nor was it about the service, which was pleasant. It's about the serving sizes on the bowls. I don't eat a great deal so the bowl is really more than enough for me. But, Panda, REALLY? I completely understand that protein prices have gone up, but a few tiny pieces of meat interspersed among a couple regular-sized pieces on a mountain of white steamed rice is nothing short of highway robbery. It's a complete "poke in the eyes," as my dad would say. If I were paying for just rice, it would cost a lot less and it wouldn't look much different. I suppose that's the real way to go if you're going to eat at Panda these days. It was an even bigger disappointment because the flavor was so enjoyable.

FIRST TIME VISIT!…read more Woohoo! Been looking for chili cheese fries and happened upon a review for this place boasting fries with a homemade chili so we HAD TO stop in tonight. THE LOCATION: on the very end of a string of businesses in a strip mall that I've never been in before, so that was cool. Lots of parking, that'll never be an issue. And right off the 410. THE MENU: Burgers, dogs, Mexi-style munchies and a variety of frozen dessert-type items like shakes, frozen fruit concoctions and Italian ice. THE STAFF: I wasn't overwhelmed with a warm welcome and smiles, at least from the guys. Lol! They should really work on that. There was a sweet gal who ran out our food orders and she was great. THE FOOD: I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich deluxe with tots and a sweet tea. The grilled chicken was juicy and cooked well and the bun was lovely, slightly sweet and toasted. Overall, the sandwich could've used more flavor, like a creamy bbq spread and cheddar instead of the "Swiss" cheese that tasted more like American cheese. But overall, 7/10. The tots were extra crispy and the guy who took my order didn't take heed to my request for ranch. I was too lazy to get up again so I settled for ketchup. The sweet tea was nicely sweet and fresh, I'll be sipping this in my dreams. The hubby ordered the bacon cheeseburger with chili cheese fries and an Oreo cookie shake. The burger looked good and he ate it quick, so there's that. This guy can EAT so it surprised us both when he slowed down fast after eating that burger. Lol! He kept saying how filling it was, but then he also killed a large shake before the food arrived, so there's that. He ate most of his chili cheese fries, leaving me a few bites to sample. Not bad. I order a Coco Haven frozen dessert to go and omg is this thing delightful! Vanilla ice cream and coconut Italian ice (?) with a blue snow cone-like syrup drizzled throughout. I loved the texture of what I believed to be Italian ice. Smooth and flaky, a perfect icy dessert. OVERALL: decent eatery, the hubby said we can go back (LOL!) Shockerrrrr! But I recommend the staff tries harder to make customers feel welcomed and comfortable. The next visit will be telling.

They're a burger joint and the burgers feel like something you'd get at home, and in the best way possible. I opted to sit outside, because they have a great patio area, with a stunning view! After the camera took all it's action, I dug right in. Such a great first, second, third and all the other bites!! The burger was juicy and cooked just to my liking! I loved that the bread was toasted on the bottom of the bun, and not just the inside of the bun, it was a beautiful toasty bun!! The fries were more wedge like, and I like that they were coated and had this nice crispy crunch on them. They were piping hot, which is what I love!!! I have loved them ever since I tried them at the local BBQ in Waelder, Texas. Since then I have eaten them whenever I see them on a menu. But, sometimes, I get a craving for them. Today was one of those days. I went on the DoorDash app and did a search on the word tripas. It came up with a plethora of Mexican restaurants in my area. I scrolled through them until I saw the picture for the Super Tripas Plate at Taco 16th Street Northwest. They looked really good, so I decided to take a chance and order them. Thirty minutes later, they were at my door. I was amazed by what I saw when I took the foil off the plate. There was a large pile of tripas topped in a white cheese, an equally large pile of caramelized grilled onions, a small pot of refried beans, a scoop of guacamole, 5 street-sized corn tortillas, and two different containers of salsa. I put a little bit of everything on the tortillas. Everything was delicious. I especially liked the flavors of the two salsas. It was the perfect tripas dinner. I can't wait to tell my son about it and order it again.

I'm guessing once the initial rush dies down, the experience might feel a bit more relaxed. When I first walked in, there was a slight unpleasant smell, kind of like body odor, which wasn't the best first impression. That said, the staff was very friendly and attentive. Even though I ordered through the kiosk (which was easy and straightforward to use), employees still checked in to see if I needed anything. After placing my order, it took about 10-15 minutes to get my food, which felt reasonable considering how crowded it was. I decided to sit outside since it was a nice day, and they do have both indoor and outdoor seating options. As for the food--portions are definitely generous. I ordered two sliders (mild spice level) and a salad. The sliders had thick pieces of chicken, and while they were filling, the chicken itself was a bit too thick for my liking and didn't have much flavor beyond the spicy seasoning on the outside. On the positive side, the sauce on the sliders was really good. The salad was also a standout--I genuinely enjoyed it. The fries were another highlight: fresh, crispy, and paired well with the sauce. Overall, this visit felt a bit hit-or-miss, possibly because of how busy things were. I'm willing to give it another try down the line to see if the experience improves once things settle. If you're curious, it's worth checking out for yourself.

I originally asked for Colby Jack cheese, but my sandwich was made with Pepper Jack. When I pointed this out, the employee handed the sandwich to the cook in the back. Instead of remaking it, he removed the two slices of Pepper Jack and placed Colby Jack on the same sandwich, which was disappointing from both a food quality and customer service standpoint. When I received the sandwich back, it was completely cold. I asked for a new sandwich. The first one was thrown away, but when I received the replacement, that sandwich was also cold. When I explained the issue to the manager, Anthony responded with a grin and stated, "The sandwich is not guaranteed to be warm because we are a fast-paced company." I then asked if it could be toasted, and he told me they "can't do that." His tone felt dismissive rather than solution-focused. At that point, I asked for a refund since I was not going to eat a cold sandwich. Anthony chuckled, then asked for my card. The interaction felt unprofessional and disrespectful, especially coming from a manager. Chick-fil-A's mission states that the company strives "to glorify God by being a faithful steward and having a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A." Unfortunately, this experience did not reflect that mission. I have always associated Chick-fil-A with high standards of food quality and exceptional customer service, which is why this situation stood out so strongly. I hope this location reviews proper food handling procedures and reinforces customer service expectations, particularly for leadership roles.

Here are a few thoughts from a self-proclaimed BBQ snob:) First off, El Monte is an absolute dive! You can very easily pass by and not give it a second look. But then again, many of the really good smokehouses are. My fiancee and I are new to San Antonio and like trying new BBQ places. We picked El Monte at random after our initial choice turned out to be closed. I ordered a 2-meat platter with brisket and sausage, which is my "go to" meal when trying out any new smokehouse. IMHO, those two meats...and their sides...tell you a lot about a BBQ joint. My fiancee ordered the brisket sandwich. The sausage was a slightly charred but still good, although nothing to write home about. The Barracho beans were pretty good, but not my style. Nor do I like rice with BBQ. Just to be clear...I like Mexican food, I like Tex Mex and I like BBQ. But I don't necessarily like them combined; it's a matter of personal taste for me. The potato salad was okay, but again, nothing to write home about. My fiance had the brisket sandwich and thought it was awesome. For starters, it was HUGE! In addition to the brisket, it had white cheese, pico and guacamole. She offered me a bite, but I was too occupied with my own plate. So, what was good? The brisket was freaking AWESOME!!! It was some of the best I've had. Great flavor and extremely tender. It literally crumbles on your fork and melts in your mouth. Not sure what was in their BBQ sauce, but it complements the brisket extremely well. Nothing else on my plate was bad at all, the brisket just blew everything out of the water. I would go back just for the brisket alone. If you stop by El Monte without trying it, you're selling yourself short. I've never given a 5-Star review based solely on the brisket, so this is first for me.
