You can get high quality essentials here and will pay for the local Snowville milk or Shagbark corn chips or Frog Ranch Salsa - all local companies that are building out and selling beyond local. You can also get a crazy selection of mushrooms because a local kid has really perfected the art of growing them here in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in southeastern Ohio. The beer selection is well tended and leans into the rich ecosystem that is Athens and Ohio brewing (hit Jackie O's, Little Fish, Devil's Kettle, and West End while you pass through). Extras are some cool prepared food and two inside and three or four covered outside tables. Usually three soups to choose from and not just prepared sandwiches and salads but some wicked creative local desserts that I have always admired but not succumbed to. They also feature local artists in pottery, leather, ceramics, hand crafted paper products, candles. Look for the S.M. initials for my neighbor's pottery or M.H. for my colleague's pottery. Lucky to have friends with talent. Finally, if you want the healthy, natural soaps, lotions, bug repellants, vitamins etc, they've got that too. I buy shampoo bars there with minimal packaging and they work great while keeping plastic out of the landfill. Finally, you can get a member number and earn small credits that are always a pleasant surprise to deduct at checkout. Cardboard boxes are available to pack up if you forget your reusable bags.

I took receipts for the first two purchases, but unfortunately declined one for the ice cream. I really wish I hadn't. After we left, I realized we had been charged $23 for two double-scoop ice cream cones. The ice cream itself was very good, but the amount we were charged simply did not seem to match the prices posted where the ice cream was being served. Based on what I remember seeing on the menu, it appeared we were significantly overcharged. Without the receipt, I can't say exactly what happened or whether it was simply an innocent mistake, and I wish I had noticed the amount while we were still there so I could have asked about it. But it bothered me enough that I was still thinking about it several hours later. It's unfortunate because otherwise this was a charming little shop with some fun things to browse, and we enjoyed the ice cream. But paying $23 for two relatively ordinary double-scoop cones left a disappointing impression and took away from what otherwise would have been a very pleasant stop.

Some notable highlights: gorgeous state jewelry by Amanda Buchanan. I started holiday shopping early and snagged a few as stocking stuffers. I was blown away by some gorgeous pottery by Sledding Hill. Loved some tshirts and the concept behind It's Still Today. Tasted an abundance of salsa from Southwestern Style Salsa, they literally don't limit you or make you feel bad at all (which is great cause we ended up grabbing a few jars). Grabbed some jam from Fisher Farms and chips from Shagbark. I got the chance to meet the sweet daughters of Sarah's Sweets. Truly delightful girls who are so proud of their mom. You guys already know how much I love my sweets but what you might not know is that my favorite candy is fudge. I LOVE fudge so much and Sarah has a huge selection to choose from (more than 20) and it was SO YUMMY! And the flowers, swoon, the flowers at this market were just beautiful.
