I used to love their iced chai, but can't have it anymore because it contains dairy (so sad, one of the best in Athens). Today I got a Vegan Chocolate Cherry cookie and ice water to escape the heat. This cute and bustling coffee shop in downtown Athens is the quintessential college hangout. It had lots of seating, a loud and stimulating environment and an upbeat vibe. The servers were friendly and helpful. Laid back in an annoying way; they also worked hard to keep up with the demand. We like trying decaf mochas at new, independent coffee shops. This mocha was good but a little too sweet for our tastes. We give it a solid B rating. Our desserts were also tasty yet not stellar. The selection later in the afternoon was limited. Cleanliness was probably on the lower side of average, but hey, what can you expect with a bunch of happy go lucky college kids in and out all day. It was a fun visit. Definitely "donkey"...Just stopped in and ordered two brevé lattes. We didn't receive 1/2 n 1/2 (brevé); We certainly paid extra but we got regular milk. The milk is overly steamed, as it's burned or perhaps the milk was spoiled. The drinks are gross, the coffee is nasty... my guess is you can fool a bunch of college kids that have no idea what good coffee tastes like. First time stopping in Athens, there is no f'ing way this is the best coffee shop in Ohio or 3rd best in America. They couldn't make a simple brevé latte. Stopped by this place this morning with some friends. It wasn't too packed but you could tell that it is a local favorite. The baristas was very friendly and patient when taking our orders. I got the power chai and a bagel. My drink was very tasty but for some reason gave me a stomach ache by the end. Maybe it was the sugar? Besides that it was very tasty. My bagel was also good but they never asked if I wanted it warm/toasted. I'm not sure if they have that capability or not, but it was still good cold, just weird. The place has good prices, nice vibes, and plenty of space for groups. Overall I'd come back to try more. read more

Cute coffee shop with way more seating than I originally thought! Came here with my whole family and we found enough room for all 11 of us sit comfortably in their covered balcony upstairs. The lines can get a little long (especially with our group!), but some of us used their mobile order and pay option and we didn't have to wait too long. Decades later (oof), I have the opportunity to come back to Athens a few times a year for work and make a point of stopping in. The staff are incredibly friendly and fun to chat with. The coffee is great and they offer a wide variety of drinks, flavors, and milk alternatives. The vanilla power chai with oat milk is my favorite - hot or iced - but their seasonal drinks are always worth checking out. Maybe it is my disdain for the stereotypical college coffee shop clientele or my lack of humor. REVENGE OF THE MICROBANG!!! FEAR THE CRUNCHY HIPSTER!!!! I can hear everyone's internal monologue. I LOVE this place! Such a cute coffee shop. Very cozy with plenty of seating. A great place to have a cup of coffee with someone or study. The service is always great and the workers are awesome! They are always so kind and personable. There is a donkey rewards card that you can get. Each time you go, you get points which add up pretty quickly to free stuff. I love donkey! There is nothing bad to say. This was my favorite spot during graduate school to come to and study, get tea and a chocolate chip muffin. The people are so friendly and they really do care. I have made many friends that's to the barista's just generally chatting and getting to know their customers. There is local art work all over the walls, board games and a stage in the back for people to use. My friend Dave runs open mic night and it was always a joy to watch. I came well past noon on a Wednesday and they were getting a bit busy. There's seating areas all over, but I couldn't assess how much since there seems to be multiple rooms. It's got a grungy/hipstery vibe in here. The space was a bit tight. You really had to step to the side if someone needed to walk past you. I ordered a regular coffee with soy milk. It was the blend of the day. Not sure what it was, but the barista recommended it. Also, soy milk is free. Yes, I said FREE. I'm so used to paying for milk substitutes. It's a selling point to include it in the price. The guy told me they only charge for it if it's in a latte. It was only $1.95 so it was pretty cheap in my opinion. It had a light taste to it. I'm almost curious as to how the dark roast tastes. They do have tons of pastries to eat as well as some gluten free options! Yay! I'll have to come back here again if I'm in town. They don't have a parking lot, but there is street parking just past it. Meters only take quarters here, not credit cards. I put in a quarter which got me 30 minutes. How awesome!! I hadn't visited Donkey coffee until my junior year of college, simply because I had just never been. The coffee is good. Nothing absolutely spectacular. The sitting areas are great for studying or hanging around if you're gonna be there a while. I myself have spent quite a few hours on the couches in there working. Overall it's just your typical hipster coffee place with baristas who have a "holier than thou" attitude. Not really a place that stands out in my mind. My only qualm is that they never fail to ask your milk preference, which I understand is an effort to be kind and inclusive and allergy/intolerance friendly, but I feel like if someone has a preference for alternative milk, they will state it within the order. If I say I want a latte, you don't need to ask if I have a milk preference. I stated no preference. Of course I want whole milk. I didn't just forget to say my alternative milk preference. It has really good coffee. They have many options for diet needs. I like whatever coffee we've had there. It has almond and soy like any good coffee shop must. The coffee is on the pricier side but it's mostly local and really good so that helps a bit. It's about $3 for a regular size coffee. They also have a selection of cookies and muffins, a few of which are vegan. It has many comfortable couches in the front. They also have lots of tables to set up your laptops. I would go to Donkey Coffee and Espresso for coffee in Athens. It's a must if exploring the local scene. The atmosphere is the best of anywhere in town. read more

This is a great find in Athens. They serve a wide variety of coffee and tea. My favorite is their chai. Even better than that is their chaider. It's served in the fall and it's AMAZING. The perfect mixture of chai and cider. They have a rewards program which is nice, so for every 10 drinks you buy you get one for free.
