What's with all these pessimistic reviews? Have some faith in this place :) First of all, always had great service. I'm not the type to persuade the cashier to give me free food, but they're nice enough to give me extra baguettes. It helps having the Panera card too, you get wonderful surprises just by signing up. And sometimes, when you visit them enough, you get free smoothies! WOOOHOOO!! FREE smoothies!!! On a more serious note, I'm pretty religious about ordering my broccoli cheddar bread bowl with a side of macaroni&cheese. Panera is a decent place to get a tasty breakfast or lunch. They offer some very nice sandwiches, soups, breads, and pastas, but for the portion size to cost ratio doesn't match up that well. There are plenty of Panera restaurants around, and the one in Davis isn't much different. It's a fairly large restaurant with ample seating both inside and out. When you go in you can look at the menu above the cashiers and put your order in. There is definitely a lot to choose from! I usually can't decide on just one thing so I go with the 'Pick Two' option. The neat thing about this is that you can pretty much select two of any of the items on the menu. There are different tiers of items. Two of the lowest tiered items would cost less than if you wanted two of the more premium selections. You can mix and match. I really like this option, as it gives me a chance to mix and match a sandwich or panini with a soup or salad or pasta. You could even pick two different sandwiches to try as well. Most of the items on the menu look great... and taste pretty darned good. But the portion size is a disappointment. For about $8-12, the two items you get probably will not leave you full. Of particular small size are the pastas in the pick two. You get a little bowl with pasta in it. These remind me of those single serving microwave pastas I ate when I was a kid. No... Panera pastas aren't that bad in terms of quality, but in terms of size, that's what it feels like. So while I enjoy the taste of the food at Panera, the price just can't justify it. I'll definitely go to Panera to hang out and meet up with people on occasion, but it's not a place I would frequent much, especially if I were hungry! read more

The only fathomable reason I would wake up at 6:00am is to get to revel in the opening of a Panera Bread in Davis, which happens to be today (Friday, 8/31/12), and to start the work day right by satisfying my carb and coffee fix. "Welcome! You're the fourth customer today!" Everyone was super energetic and friendly; a trait which I hope isn't lost over time. The store is bright and accommodating, with plenty of seating. I can see it becoming a quick favorite for students once the school year starts up again. But Panera, Y U wait until after I've graduated to open in Davis? I stood by the bread display, daydreaming and inhaling all the bread and coffee smells until someone alerted me that the register was open (oops). I got a breakfast power sandwich (egg, ham, cheese) sans cheese. Though the food's ok, it's just too over-priced for what it is! I'm not the biggest fan of this location either. The service is really slow and the staff just don't/can't keep up with the crowd. Almost every time I walked in, though there were plenty of empty tables, most were dirty and had bread crumbs on them. My brother gave me a $15 gift card to here so I decided to treat myself and a friend of mine out to eat. I walked in and I was impressed with the set up. Definitely a study kind of place to be in and it was nice and cozy as well. Fire place right in the middle of the cafe, many chairs, booths, and couches around, and a plus would be that they offer a lot of outlets that you can use. I ordered the Cuban Chicken Panini with ham on foccacia and had the choice of choosing the apple, chips or baguette and my friend ordered the a deal where you get 1/2 a sandwich, with a salad, and your choice of an apple, chips, or baguette as well. Order came out to be about $19.50 (which I think is quite expensive with the amount of food they give you). I was certainly not satisfied and I was still hungry, but I would have to say my panini wasn't that bad at all. My friend enjoyed his salmon salad that he chose and he liked the Smokehouse Turkey sandwich as well. I would probably not come back here just because I know I can get something cheaper and more fulfilling for lunch. read more

This place is similar to the other Paneras I've gone to. They have a pretty big selection of bagels and other delicious baked goods like scones and bear claws. Yes, I think Panera is a little overpriced, but I still come back. I like their Chipotle Chicken Avocado Melt, their Steak & Arugula Sandwich, and their Southwest Chile Lime Ranch salad. I usually opt for their pick 2 deal. I really like their seasonal turkey chili as well. And their bread is so soft in the inside, I love it. I like their strawberry banana smoothie as well! As for the internet, it was really really weak that it was better for me to just use my own data. For a place with free wifi, I'd except it to be a little stronger. It was also freezing in there, pretty made me not want to touch my lemonade since it'll just make me colder. The bagel tasted really good, soft and was perfect with the cream cheese (although it was a huge pack of cream cheese for the 1 bagel that I had). Great and open place for studying! It's never usually too crowded when I come and I always find a place to study. Best Crepes we've had since we were in Paris a few years ago. The atmosphere was VERY pleasant, the owner was exceptionally nice and visited with us. Overpriced for what you get. Their sandwiches are all over $10, and you get mediocre amounts of food. It would be excusable if the sandwiches were actually high quality, but they are not, especially when compared to other cafes in the area (Cloud Forest, for example.) In my case, I got the Turkey Avocado BLT, which was entirely cold with soft bread (who makes a BLT without toasted bread?.) It was disappointing and no better than something you could throw together at home in a few minutes, ( for way less $$, btw.) Their soups may be okay, but are also overpriced for what you get (quantity and quality) especially with the choose two. Tried to place an order for 10 people yesterday. After the app crashed I called in to the store. I was just giving the person on the phone my last order and the manager jumps on the phone unexpectedly. The manager tells me that they are behind on a $6000 catering order and tells me they cannot make my order. I am speechless, I said this was a larger order when I first got on the phone (no one said anything or asked how large) and tried to take a polite pause between orders so the worker could ask questions (again, no one said anything). Panera is a great place to do work -- although I usually won't order much because I think they are a little pricey for what they offer. They used to have a Fontina grilled cheese that was to die for but then took it off the menu. They usually offer bread or an apple as a side -- if you order a sandwich definitely go for the apple, then bread side is heavy with a sandwich. Salads are decently sized but will leave you hungry if you get one without any meat. The coffee is not great, comparable to Starbucks quality. Also they have a pretty strange wifi policy where from 11-2 you can only use half an hour of wifi which I think is a super silly policy and can be frustrating if you're trying to study at those times. I'd recommend all the above. Hands down. Every time. The coziness of this little Panera, with its smattering of booths and tables and the fireplace in the middle makes for a good study spot or cozy lunch place to gather with friends. If you get tea or coffee, there are always free refills. They have 6 teas to choose from, including Earl Grey, decaf Earl Grey, green tea, mango, ginger, and black tea. You can also get free refills on drinks, including iced tea. The only downside to studying is that sometimes your access to wifi is limited (during peak lunch/dinner hours). Also, parking is typically limited to 2 hours in the nearby lot and on the street. Unfortunately over the years, the price of the You Pick Two menu option has increased. It used to be that you could get anything for one set price, but now you pay a different price PER item, depending on the ranking of the item. I used to get The Frontega Chicken Panini, but the past few times it's been overly salty. Now I'm committed to the Mac n Cheese and Fuji Apple Chicken Salad with that lovely side of crusty bread. Don't forget to get a Rewards Card, in which you earn special discounts every few visits. My current one is $2 off a bowl of soup. This review is for the poor treatment we received from Linda (short-haired older brunette woman). My family and I were patiently waiting for our food after being told that the wait is going to be 30 min. We had come to the area for the UC Davis Family Weekend and decided to have lunch at this Panera. Since we had to wait so long for our food, we were going to nibble on some food we had just purchased at the farmers market. Before I can even take it out of the bag, very rude Linda shouts 'NO OUTSIDE FOOD!! HAVE IT OUTSIDE!!!' Wow. Did she have to berate me in front of everyone? Like I committed a crime or something? Linda, try working on your people skills because you are not like most Panera workers I've encountered and I patronize this franchise a lot.
