Their Steak & White Cheddar is good enough, but tough to justify nearly a $14 price tag given that the sandwich is mostly bread and melted cheese. Those who know me KNOW I love me some Panera Bread. Having previously worked for a company that used to order from them for every lunch meeting or gathering, I fell in love with their delicious bread, sandwiches, soups, cookies and pastries. Despite eating from Panera 9999965357 times, I never got sick of them. Until recently. My husband and I stopped into the Shelton location this past Saturday around 10:30 AM before a trip to NYC. It wasn't that busy, so we figured we could get in, order, sit down for a quick bite (rather than dirtying up the car while trying to eat and navigate traffic) and get back on the road. Easy peasy, right? Uh, not quite. A couple in front of us was having trouble ordering because everything they wanted seemed to be unavailable at this Panera location. They were out of a particular sandwich the wife wanted. The wife wanted a blueberry smoothie or drink and they only had strawberries. Stuff like that. That should've been a major sign to us, but we brushed it off. Well, I brushed it off. When it's our turn to order, we ask for two sandwiches: a Bacon, Over Easy Egg and Cheese and a Sausage, Over Easy Egg and Cheese, both on the advertised Brioche bun. The cashier informs us they are "out" of Brioche buns. Of course they are. We opt for Whole Grain White bread instead as well as one Everything bagel with cream cheese to split. The bagel is given to us by the cashier who rang us up after a few minutes, in a paper bag, toasted and dry with a small cup of cream cheese and a knife for us to use. Maybe they don't put the cream cheese on because of COVID-19? Or because customers can decide how much or little cream cheese they want on their bagel? In any event, we didn't care much about that and were happy to slather it on ourselves. We stand around waiting for our food but don't see anyone working on our order. We decide to grab a table close to the food pick-up area to wait. I figured since we have to wait, we might as well eat the bagel. It's good. 10 or 15 minutes go by and a line of hungry folks have joined us in our quest to receive our elusive food. The other customers look annoyed. I see many employees shuffling back and forth in the food prep area but it didn't appear anyone was actually doing anything. Some legit looked like they didn't know what they were supposed to be doing. Then, a glimmer of hope: I hear a guy ask how eggs are supposed to be made for an order. I look up and see another guy mouth him something, hopefully the right answer, because I just KNEW it was our order they were talking about. I thought to myself, doesn't the actual monitor they all have access to tell them what to make? I'm annoyed at this point and go up and tell one of the young ladies that we will now take our order to go as we have to get back on the road and are now running late. She says it should only be a "few more minutes." I walk away. I decide to hit up the bathroom knowing we'll be getting back on the road (Pro Tip: Please don't use the women's bathroom; it is/was SO gross) and when I come out, my husband is back in the car. He tells me the same girl I spoke with gave him our sandwiches and she half apologized for the delay but didn't really seem that genuine. But okay, crisis averted, we now have our delicious breakfast sandwiches, right? Wrong! As long as it took to get our food (over 20 minutes!!!), I was expecting our food to remotely resemble what we ordered. Not. Even. Close. Take a look at my pictures and tell me if those two dry sandwiches are worth over $12 with tax. I was bewildered and flabbergasted. And, after all of that egg talk earlier, we get our sandwiches with eggs that are WELL over hard, not over easy. How hard is it to just make a very simple order? The sole star in this review is only for the freshness of the bread we ate; I'm honest and will say the bagel was fresh and tasty, as was the other bread, despite being part of two Sahara Desert-dry sandwiches. But there is Frontega Chicken also on focaccia... after we sit down and wait for our orders to be brought out we hear a loud yell that there is NO! Frontega chicken. Okay!? What then to order...? Let's go for the Sierra Turkey, and for the inconvenience we get a refund... loved it! The breads are of great quality and the Sierra Turkey was alright. It did not really satisfy me, cause I was planning to eat the Cuban Chicken in the first place, but the Sierra became my third choice. Another sad thing was that one of the drinks we had to wait for, had a big long blond hair in it... NOT GOOD! 30min wait for a sandwich and cup of soup!?!? I went through the drive-thru and ordered a sandwich and cup of soup off the regular menu (no special order). The time stamp on my receipt said 12:33PM. They made me pull up and wait. They FINALLY brought out my order at 1:01PM (28min later)!!! And they forgot one of the items!! Plus, while I was waiting they brought the order for the car behind me! I rarely eat at this location since I typically never had a good experience. I decided against my best judgment and went in to get lunch. Walked inside and there was no line. A woman asked the cashier something regarding her coffee, so I took my time time to look over the menu. I settled on what I wanted and waited for the cashier to return. Literally sat there for 5 minutes (with a line forming behind me) before I gave up and left. Cashier finally returned to the register after I already left the line, so I was definitely not going in the back of the line or asking other patrons to allow me to retain my spot. I want to start out by saying I normally love Panera. This afternoon, I left there so grossed out that I can feel shudders in my spine. First of all, the young woman at the register did not greet us, did not smile or make eye contact nor tell us what to do with the beeper ie do we come to the counter when it goes off or do we wait for them to bring it to us at the table. We only knew it was the latter because we overheard the cashier next to ours give instructions to her customer. We would not have known, as we usually do take out. We were not offered a receipt and didn't know if we were supposed to wait for our bagel or take a seat or what until, again, another cashier directed us. Ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese and it was tossed in our general direction toasted. Politely asked for an untoasted bagel. We received it, without apology and with an annoyed look. Helpful Hint Panera. Don't toast unless you're asked to toast. We only found two open tables. One was too small for us and the other was covered in crumbs, including the chairs. Went in search of a wet cloth, found what looked like a manager having what seemed like a personal conversation with a food preparer. He grabbed a wet cloth from a cabinet and gave the table the once over. Not the chairs though. We sat on the crumbs of who knows whose lunch. Gross. My lunch was tossed on to the table wordlessly and sloppily. Something was grunted at us, but it was indecipherable as the server's back was mostly turned to us while she was tossing it at us. The broccoli cheese soup as always was very good. I'd ordered half soup, half salad, the Green Goddess with romaine. The dressing was already on it. I'm not sure if that's usual or not, but the romaine felt and tasted limp in my mouth, as if I was eating yesterday's salad. I'm pretty sure it was. I had to locate and remove all of the bacon because it was raw. One bite of raw bacon fat made its way into my mouth, and I still have heeby jeebies over it. Can't untaste it. I wasn't given a spoon for my soup. I had to get up again and go to the service counter. I asked the grunting server for a spoon and she didn't acknowledge me, but did yell "spoon!" Across the counter while walking away from me. After a couple of minutes of me waiting a different server asked what I needed and I finally got a spoon. The hunk of bread that came with my soup was the small, very burnt end of a loaf. So disappointing. I wanted to ask for a refund, but the manager was again occupied talking with staff. I usually love this place. I'm here twice a week sometimes for lunch, however recently the service here has been just a terrible experience. Starting with the inconsistency. Two weeks ago, I came in.... I was not asked about chips, bread or apple. I was just given a ripped piece of sad looking bread. Just last Thursday I came back with 2 coworkers. It took over 20 minutes to get our food!!! Unacceptable. Two of my coworkers were given table buzzer things so I wasted time standing at the small pick up area along with 15 other irritated people. I found the staff to be very nice and attentive. My Chipotle Chicken Avocado Melt panini was delicious, although a little overpriced...menu stated $5.29, but receipt shows $8.79. Our son's "PB & J" was $4.29 and I had to bring it back...the lack of filling was offensive! My food was not warm and my espresso took at least 10 minutes to make even when I was the only one that ordered an espresso drink between 5-7 customers that past. I think their machine was broken...but what I though would only take no more than 7 minutes because I was late for work, took 15-20 minutes.
