The dirty dishes piled up at the trash drop off area. The food was not worth the $35 I paid out. The toasted cheese sandwich was just a block of unmelted cheese. The mac and cheese was ice cold and tasted like the frozen stuff we got in school. The food is supposed to be freshly made, but you could tell it was processed frozen food. I also want to give Panera some love for offering so many healthy options in addition to baked goods. Went there for Sunday brunch at around 1130 but they were only serving lunch items. All of the cream pitchers were empty and we had to take them into the kitchen ourselves to get them refilled and still not brought back out for 15 minutes. One of my pregnancy go-to's has just happened to be a bread bowl-and I'm not sure where I would get one besides Panera. I usually just do the combo, which comes with a side. The soups have really been a hit or miss for me. Sometimes their loaded with veggies and proteins, there's been other times where I could only find one piece of chicken in my entire chicken noodle soup. I also feel as if the portions are just not there. I shouldn't be able to eat my entire order of soup that I paid $10 for in five gulps. I am ok with any of the Panera franchises to be quite honest and their healthier fares and the feeling of something that is fresher and better for you alternative. Most of the Paneras that I have visited have been quick moving and great experiences in general but this location is a tougher one for a few reasons: - It is busy 24/7 365 and does not stop and ever have any times where you might just want to stop in and have some lunch and prop open a laptop to get some quiet time. This does not happen here because the tables are usually completely filled and the buzz in the restaurant can be deafening when one is trying to concentrate. - The parking lot is a close second, if not first, compared to Trader Joes on Marginal way where it is literally like a game of hungry hungry hippos trying to fight your way into a spot that might be opening. They really need to do something about this because there have been various times that I know people will avoid it like the plague for that reason BUT obviously it is not having any effect on the traffic coming into the store so I guess .. Why fix something that is working? - The last two times that we have been in this location our orders were mixed up or things were missing from the order and quite honestly I think it is because of the sheer volume of orders that are flying around there like a pack of bats. It might be to busy to keep up with so the customer service takes a hit sometimes. Lately the So. Portland Panera has gone down hill. No decaf and no skim milk. It made me stay up all night

Panera is Panera is Panera, right? It's one of those extremely consistent chains where - regardless where you are in the world - Panera is always a safe bet. The quality of the baked goods seems to have changed over the years, though. For example: - It doesn't seem like Panera makes their infamous Cobblestone muffins anymore... which is a darn shame. They were one of my favorite guilty food pleasures. It was a dense muffin with raisins and apples and cinnamon and icing... and it fell apart like monkey bread and was divine with a cup of coffee. Happy sigh. The last couple times I've been here, though, I haven't seen them. Am I coming at the wrong time? I don't know, but it makes my inner chubby kid sad (I totally was one, by the way, so I can say this). - What's going on with the bagels?! The asiago bagel used to be much cheesier and denser. The one I recently ate was basically a round of flavorless dough. It tasted like classic white bread and I regretted ordering it the moment I saw it on the plate. I spent the duration of my time eating it wondering how many miles I would need to run to counteract this poor decision. Just thinking about it now is making me wonder if I should run an extra one for good measure. Also, the locale in South Portland has a couple quirks that are worth noting: 1. It is never not busy, so be prepared to wait regardless of when you come. Segue... 2. The parking lot is a nightmare. Not only is it designed weirdly, there are not enough spots for what's going on in this strip mall. I usually have to circle around at least two or three times before something opens up. I do, however, want to note that the staff here has always been quite nice. They know how to efficiently move through the lengthy lines, are patient with questions, and are pretty approachable, normal people. I dig that. I also appreciate that they're cool with people just hanging out here with a good book or for a lengthy meeting. I never feel rushed or like I'm taking up space (I would like to take up more space though, Panera, so please bring back the Cobblestone muffins). read more
