Good food, very pricey and then at the end of the meal they provide you a bill that includes an additional 3.25% service fee. This is getting out of hand! The price of meals has skyrocketed and then the establishment has the balls to add a service fee. I guarantee this will start affecting tips given to the servers. read more

We were really looking forward to our night out at JP's, but unfortunately our experience fell short. We were seated at a very cramped two-top table with barely any space between us and the surrounding tables -- it felt uncomfortable and not at all what you'd expect at this price point. We politely asked if it was possible to move, but the staff made no effort to accommodate us. Because of how tight and uncomfortable the seating was, we ultimately decided to leave before ordering. We were four happy diners. Best Italian restaurant in Greater Portland. Large wall board with a warm and inviting atmosphere, JP's Bistro is like a Portland Old Port restaurant, the only difference is JP's has unlimited free parking. Skilled and responsive wait staff. Everything was lovely until I came home and looked at my bill. A 3.25 percent added charge called an "operating cost"??????? Isn't the cost of operation covered by the $32 entrees and $17 martini? Since this restaurant has changed ownership things are not right there. While moving to RESY to book reservations is a good idea, the wait was ridiculous despite our 7 pm reservation. Waiting 30 minutes to be seated is not acceptable. One of their main dishes had just 3 scallops for $30 plus? This was never the case before. Because they fouled up our reservation, no comment about food. I say the service/manager may be weak. Our reservation was made more than a week ago, specified dining room. At our on time arrival, the hostess informed us that the dining room was full, and the only table available was right behind where she stood ,in the entrance, and about two (2) feet distant from her elbow. To me that is the worst seat for any dining experience. I expressed my concern and the reply was that the manager offered a free round of drinks for the table to compensate for the disappointment. I felt like we were at some low key bar and grill, so ridiculous. I observed a vacant table in the dining room and question why we weren't being seated there. The reply was that's for someone else. This restaurant is a bistro, so we didn't expect anything special in "ambiance." The restaurant was clean and not overcrowded. While our waitress handed us a menu, most of the offerings appear on a large chalkboard. They have all of the standard fare, and then some. My wife decided on two appetizers, short rib ravioli and belly clams. The sauce/broth in which the ravioli were served was wonderful. Each ravioli was filled with ricotta and topped with braised short rib meat and gorgonzola. The clams were tender, not heavily breaded and served with a homemade tarter sauce. I had a combination chicken parm and eggplant parm with a side of rigatoni. That combination seems popular in Portland, but not something I've encountered in the past. It was quite good with an excellent tomato sauce. The serving was more than I could eat. A definite on our "will return" list for next year. read more

We've heard great things about JP's and last night we finally tried it. Definitely lived up to the reputation! They have a large selection along with daily specials. We started with the wedge and Ceasar salad. Both were perfect. I had the Shrimp Athena and my wife had the Short Rib Raviolis. Both were amazing. Perfectly prepared, large portions and delicious, fresh ingredients. Finished with Taramisu and Key Lime Pie which were a perfect finish to a wonderful meal. We sat at the bar and our bartender was great. Very friendly and attentive, and the place was packed. This will definitely be a "go to" for us. FYI, the gentleman next to us ordered the rib-eye and commented the he is a regular and it was the only thing he orders there, and according to him it's the best steak in the Portland area. I can't believe I've never eaten at Jp' s bistro! ! sometimes work in Yarmouth and drive right by there and every time I do I think I should check it out. Tonight I did. Having a fantastic server helps and Jamyee could not have more pleasant, helpful or funnier She along with some their of the best food I've had in a long timel because" Dare I say out to dinner" was great. The tables were nicely spread far enough. Great job guys. I had grilled bourbon salmon, incredible!! I ordered rice for a side and received mashed potatoes. The best mistake I've ever had at a restaurant .The vegetables were the perfect side as well. I can actually see myself coming here again and again. Can't recommend enough! The outdoor seating is very spacious and feels safe with a close enough distance from other dinners. Masks are required until you get to your seat but I also kept mine on during all times (except eating) just out of kindness to the waitstaff. They also wear masks and are very cautious! There's something on the menu for everyone and you could go back 50 times and never run out of different things to get...and it's ALWAYS amazing! We had the stuffed mushrooms (stuffed with crabmeat) and Caesar salad to start, both really really great but didn't get pictures. The entrees are always hot, super fresh and super flavorful. Don't forget to save room for their homemade dessert...or take it home like we did! It's worth trying to make a reservation since they get busy, but don't rule out just walking in! read more

Food was good and service was average. They did have lots of choices which was nice. My reason for three stars is, 1) for a family of 4 that night, not sure I see the value in spending $240 with only a couple of beers, 2 desserts, 1 appetizer plus our meals and 2) a pet peeve of mine is always paying for multiples of sodas or lemonades for the kids; spending $18 on this for example is irritating in my eyes. We love JP's, especially now in their new Falmouth location! We usually try to get a high top table because we like the bartender, Erica, to wait on us. She's very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Makes an amazing martini, too. I usually try to skip the bread basket, but the garlic butter and the smell of the warm fresh bread gets me every time. Short rib ravioli is always our appetizer to start, but after reading other reviews I'm going to have to try the Caesar salad next time. My favorite is the chicken marsala over garlic mashed potatoes and my husband usually goes with the seafood spicy marinara. We always leave with leftovers, so lunch the next day is just as good. Sometimes it is hard to get in, especially during the pandemic, but is definitely worth the wait! read more

We were very disappointed with our experience this evening. My husband had called at 11:00 this morning to make a reservation and spoke with a gentleman who suggested 4:30. My husband provided his name and mobile number by way of confirming the 4:30 dinner time. When we arrived, we were to,d by the hostess that there was no reservation in my husband's name and asked if we were Diane, then if we were Suki. Clearly not. She proceeded to walk away, mumbling under her breath. There was another family attempting to be seated at the same time, one of them being an older gentleman with a cane. It was clear that having to stand in line while the hostess continued to be incapable of handling our reservation mishap was not comfortable for this man. I had to finally speak up and request that the hostess seat the other party and come back to address our situation. The young lady clearly did not believe that we had called to make a reservation and rather than trying to accommodate us or to even offer an apology for a mixup, she made it clear that she felt we were lying. My husband told her that he had spoken with a man but didn't know the name. She asked what time he'd made the call and we told her 11:00am. The response was, "I wasn't here then". She did go into the kitchen to check with someone and came back telling us we could have a table in the bar section, but thaat we'd have to be done within an hour as there were reservations for that table at 5:30. Needless to say, we left. Yes, we could certainly eat in an hours time, but after being repeatedly insulted by the hostess, having heard her mumbling to herself and commenting to others, why would we want to give them our business? In the end, we had an amazing dinner at Maria's in Portland. We've heard wonderful things about JP's and had been looking forward to it. Unfortunately, it looks like we will not be back. With so many wonderful places to dine in this area, restaurants need to provide customers with the best experience possible - sadly, this was not the case for us at JP's. read more

I'm not going to let the fact that we had a reservation for 7:30pm and didn't get sat until past 8:00pm with no apology or that I ordered rigatoni and received linguine affect my review... because JP's was amazing. Things happen and the rest of our experience was so perfect, the little things didn't end up mattering. We had a very friendly, knowledgeable waitress which, thank goodness, as the menu is huge and she knew every little thing about it. We started with the short rib ravioli (they let you add extra to your order, so we got six) and I'm not even kidding when I say they were the most delicious thing I've ever eaten. The sauce, the cheese, the pasta, the meat.. I was at a loss for words it was that good. I later found out that it can be ordered as an entree and I already know that's what I'm getting next time, because one was certainly not enough. We also shared an app of calamari which was a little less cooked and crispy than I prefer, but still not bad. It was a long debate amongst everyone on what to order. Finally, I settled on Scallops Andrew. Even though it sounded heavy when our waitress was describing it to us, it turned out to be a very delicate and well balanced dish. Plenty of scallops, shrimp and not too much crumb topping. The veggies it came with were cooked to perfection and actually a table favorite for whomever got them. I do wish I had chosen mashed potato over pasta as my side starch, but lesson learned for next time! On my way there, I found their Instagram and they were highlighting their blood orange martini. All the ladies ordered one (or two!) and loved every sip. The men all had a beer on tap they enjoyed. This wouldn't be a place I come often as it's a little pricy and the food isn't exactly for the health conscious.. but for a celebration or a date night, this would be a top choice for me! read more

This restaurant reminds me so much of the mediocre Italian-American restaurant that was in the small town I grew up in. The aesthetic of JP's in Falmouth is actually wonderful - someone obviously put a lot of thought into the trendy and modern stylings. However the food seems the opposite and stuck in the fads of 20-30 years ago. Salads seemed thoughtless, like someone basically looked around at whatever vegetables could be found in the bain marie and threw them together (sliced black olives, grated carrots and bagged mesclun mix?). Entrees were all your standard Italian-American fare. The flavors were actually really good, someone knows what they're doing in making them but it seemed to be done so carelessly it was a waste. For example, chicken marsala was obviously sauce just plopped over pre-cooked pasta. If the sauce and pasta had been cooked together to finish it at the end, then the pasta starch would help everything get coated and melded together. Instead, some of the pasta where the sauce hadn't been poured over was just plain, the rest was a slippery mess that the sauce just slid right off of when you went to pick it up. Obviously I could go on but I'm trying (probably unsuccessfully) not to be too much of a pompous jerk in this review. read more

Made a reservation a week in advance for 2 people, on a Friday, to sit at their bar for dinner. When we arrived the bar was full and we were told "sorry, but something came up so we will seat you here" - in a corner that we didn't want. They did not honor their reservation. So we left and spent our money elsewhere. We live in a place where there are many restaurants to choose from, so I would recommend looking elsewhere for dinner. Terrible experience. read more
