Mjs is a delightfully cozy restaurant yet still still spacious enough for a gathering of ten oof your closest friends. I recently joined such a group to celebrate a friend's birthday and our server went out of her way to ensure we enjoyed the evening and captured a photo. The menu includes all the standard items one would expect and offers chef and seasonal specialties. I enjoyed the market fish, a lemon haddock drizzled with chili sauce over wasabi mashed potatoes and accompanied by a veggie medley (more of a garnish, in my opinion); however, I did not feel that the quality and flavor of the dish matched the cost ($39). I could not discern any citrus or wasabi and the chili sauce was all sweet and no spice. Perhaps the chef erred on the side of caution but I was hoping the dish would deliver on the promise of bold and intriguing flavors. It was our anniversary dinner and I could not speak to my wife without shouting. For a restaurant that has this pricing, the atmosphere could be better. Will not return for this reason. I took a date here for dinner. I ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and my date ordered the Shrimp and Grits. Both dishes were delicious. Robust wine list. Pros: Host was friendly. Service was excellent and very attentive. Food was excellent. Con: Parking lot is very small...My date and I were seated, on what must have been a back porch, on the first floor. It was extremely noisy and I could hardly hear my date speak. I wouldn't advise taking a date here, if you want a quiet space to get to know each other through conversation. This restaurant redefines what a 5-star should be. The restaurant is cozy with a mixture of upscale and laid back vib. It's a old house that was converted to a wonderful restaurant. It still maintains the home feel but is definitely an upscale menu that changes frequently. Our waiter, Ian, was perfect. Very attentive without hovering. The food was delicious and well plated. The calamari was the best I have had in quite some time. It was tender and the portion was perfect for two people. My wife had the salmon which she loved and I had a 22oz KC strip steak which was cooked to a perfect medium rare. You will find MJ to be the perfect spot for any special occasion. My husband and I decided to try somewhere new for our wedding anniversary. We often written by this place and decided that tonight was the night and we're able to make a reservation on OpenTable. We arrived about 10 minutes before our reservation and the parking lot was already packed. The good thing is that there is ample parking across the street so you always have an option that doesn't result in too much walking. The internal downstairs portion of the restaurant is quite small and it was a bit too cool for my personal taste to sit outside on what looked to be a very enjoyable patio. I was a little disappointed by the placement of our table and a waiter, serving the other table, who kept hitting my chair without even a basic excuse me. My waitress on the other hand was bright and bubbly, very attentive, and very knowledgeable about the drink and food menu. We were promptly seated and greeted and cocktail orders taken. My husband and I decided to order the poutine appetizer, and as you can see from the empty plate photo, we devoured it before I even thought about the need to create this review. I also had a very tasty Ruby red grapefruit cocktail while my husband opted for what I believe was an apple pie flavored spirit. We were offered complementary bread and then ordered entrées of the braised rib on top sweet potatoes mash for my husband and the shrimp and grits for me. Both were awesome. And after the bread, large appetizer and t cocktails, I was able to only eat about half of the shrimp and grits serving, which was quite large. my husband cleaned his plate. We were offered a great dessert collection, which included a flourless, chocolate torte, another chocolate cake option, several cheesecake options, but given the serving size of our food, we were both too full for desserts, although they sounded awesome. I must praise our server, who was bright and bubbly, attentive, but not intrusive. Always there when we need something, but not hovering during the course of the meal. I will also know that while we were hoping for a romantic atmosphere the dining area is a little bit too crowded in the patio a little bit too loud to really call this a great location for a date night. MJs is a restaurant that came highly recommended by a friend of ours, who knows the owners. We stopped in on a week night for dinner. We ordered the she crab soup which was full of nice chunks of crab and really very tasty! We ordered the catch of the day and the Braised Beef Short-ribs. The catch of the day was 2 soft shelled crabs lightly fried and served over coconut rice, it was a tasty dish, but not our favorite of the two. The short ribs were flavorful and so tender they were literally falling apart... So needless to say, this dish stole the night!! Also, if you are looking for a restaurant with a nice patio, this is your place. My last meal of 2021 was arguably the year's best. Somehow, during the decade-plus I spent living in Greensboro, I had never been to MJ's, but that changed when they were one of the few area restaurants still taking New Year's Eve reservations come mid-December. Regardless of the circumstances, it made for an excellent dining experience. A converted house (with limited parking), MJ's is sectioned off into a patio, a bar, and upstairs and downstairs dining areas. We ended up in the upstairs section, and it felt cozy and intimate. While MJ's runs a small menu normally, it was further pared down for New Year's Eve. That said, the few selections offered (including striped bass, Scottish salmon, prime rib) included several strong contenders. My wife and I went with an off-menu vegetable risotto (the chef can accommodate vegetarian requests, so don't be afraid to ask) and a seafood and grits, respectively, followed by chocolate cake and caramel brulee cheesecake slices for dessert. The food was all-around very good. The risotto was cooked well and offered a medley of vegetables. The seafood and grits (a scallop-added take on their usual shrimp and grits) featured a delicious sherry tomato cream sauce, savory chunks of Tasso ham, and no shortage of shrimp. The grits were creamy and smooth, almost enough to make "grit" an ironic misnomer. MJ's also offered attentive and amiable service and a decent cocktail selection, but the experience doesn't come cheaply. Entrees normally run in the mid-20s to mid-30s range, making this strictly a special occasion destination. All told, MJ's offers everything (food, service, ambiance) that makes for a great meal. Hey family. I went to MJ's about two months ago. I was debating if I wanted to write a review because honestly, they don't need me to write one. Long story short, I had a doctors appointment and I wasn't far. My friend said they stopped in the day before and got a crème brûlée cheesecake. It sounded scrumptious so I was gonna pop in and have a glass of wine and get the cheesecake to go. I ordered a glass of Saint cosme Côtes du Rhône which was a fabulous red. But I'm not sure what happened if I was comfortable with the atmosphere or the faint jazz or maybe it was the wine. Something told me to stay and have dinner, so I did. I chatted with the bartender Ruthie who was super sweet and you all know I love good food and great conversation. I was sitting at the bar and I guess the stars aligned because everything was great. The only thing I will say is that I think the calamari and braised short rib was a skosh under seasoned. The calamari by itself I wouldn't have cared for but the aoli that it's paired with, made it top notch. I did need just a little salt and pepper on the braised short rib. Other than that, it was great. They have an extensive wine list and the drinks are amazing. The Italian gentleman drink is nothing to play with. I enjoyed it all. They didn't have the crème brulee cheesecake but they had an Oreo cheesecake which was great. The service was great and I love the set up. It's not really big in the inside but they do have outside seating. I'd definitely recommend making a reservation just to be on the safe side. Mondays can be busy as there are not many restaurants open on Mondays. Do check it out. You won't be disappointed. read more

I was invited to dinner at MJ's over the weekend as part of a celebration, this was my first time, and it was a great experience. This is by no means a casual dining restaurant, but definitely a treat for celebrations, anniversaries or fancy date nights. It's located in a small, quaint old home, with minimal space for dining, so absolutely plan ahead and make reservations, otherwise it's doubtful you'll be able to get a table depending on how many are in your party. The menu is a bit small, but sounds like it changes frequently, perhaps seasonally. The menu is heavily seafood based, though they do have a few other options to pick from. I picked the braised short ribs, while my girlfriend chose blackened salmon. Both were delicious, the short ribs cam with a vegetable medley served on a bed of creamy mashed potatoes. No knife needed, these short ribs fell apart and melted in your mouth. The salmon came on a bed of rice, and she said it was flakey and delicious. Other in our party got oyster, shrimp tacos, soup....all were said to be delicious, and despite the portions being large, none of the plates left the table with food still on them. Unfortunately I didn't think to get a picture of my short ribs until I had already finished. Absolutely recommend MJ's if your looking for a delicious meal out. My dad chose MJ's for my mom's birthday last Friday. We absolutely loved the welcoming house-feel of the location. It is incredibly cozy. We ordered several dishes including the pork loin, catfish, and salmon plates. Everyone was happy with their food. Portions were great and my salmon was cooked to perfection. The wine and beer list were very good for what we wanted and the desserts were delicious. We've been back a few times plus my company holiday dinner. Wow--chef and owner Tad pulls off amazing and fresh food every time. Last night my son adored the filet medallions cooked to a perfect medium rare. He ate the green beans and sour cream potatoes until nothing was left. The red velvet cake was a perfect dessert for him. My wife and I split the goat cheese salad (they kindly split it in the kitchen). It was fresh and the goat cheese had a nice bite. We split the calamari between me, my son and wife. The fried jalapenos are always a delightful touch as I adore them. My mom had the scallops which she absolutely loved. My wife had the fish special, tile fish, and enjoyed every bite, including the one I had. I had the shrimp and grits. His grits are some of the best in the Carolinas. They are perfect consistency, temperature and flavor. Tail off shrimp make it an easy meal. My mom had the tiramisu for dessert and ate every bite as well. Absolutely delightful dining. read more

We had a very lovely dining experience at MJ's. First, we shared the fried calamari with jalapeno rings- perfectly breaded and fresh with an aioli sauce for dipping. Our Spanish wine, a nice blend and great for summer, paired well with our meal. Next, "we" had the shrimp and grits - if we had a spoon we would have scraped up every last bit because it was that good! It had big juicy shrimp, sausage, and a beautiful creamy sauce over perfectly cooked grits. Luckily for me my date shared because I technically ordered the blackened salmon which was over a lovely salad with goat cheese, strawberries and toasted pecans! Yummy homemade vinaigrette too. We ended up getting the fried oyster appetizer before placing our to go order. Yum yum!! They were perfectly flash fried where you tasted the oyster and not the batter. My wife and I went to MJs with a reservation hoping for an great meal based on reviews and ratings. The restaurant is very quaint in an old converted house. We were seated upstairs by Jessica who was also our server. Jessica was terrific. She was knowledgeable about the menu and specials and was very attentive. We ordered a house salad and the poutine appetizer to share. The poutine was a massive portion - so big in fact it could have served as a meal for both of us. I'm a big eater and a large man and I was kind of stunned at the portion. The fries were perfectly cooked. The gravy was delicious and curds were very tasty. We took over half the poutine with us to go. The salad and dressing were also good. We were excited to taste our main course! I ordered the ribeye with spinach and mashed potatoes and my wife ordered the special Mahi dish. The mahi was undercooked and very unremarkable. She offered me some and I passed (very unusual but after tasting it I was uninterested) and my ribeye was a poor cut of meat. I recognize ribeyes have some marbling - that's what makes it the best cut - but this ribeye was so riddled with fat and grizzle that it was tough to eat. The flavor was disappointing. The mashed potatoes and spinach were delicious - but for a $40+ steak I expected excellence. It was not. We've eaten here several times over the last few weeks, including last night, and we come away each time a little more impresssed with both the food and the service. The menu here is relatively compact, mostly steak, fish, and bird, with a daily Chef's special or two - all the dishes are excellent.. It is family owned and operated, and these are good folks - Tad is the Chef, Mindy handles the floor. We like to eat in the bar - it is small, maybe 8 to 10 stools, no tables - it is warm, inviting. Ben is in charge of the drinks, and you get a really nice pour in your cocktail here. They have some drink specials from time to time, 30% off bottles of wine on Monday, discounts of wine by the glass on Wednesday, iirc. Nice varied wine list, decent prices. The Tuna Tartare and Smoked Salmon appetizer is excellent, and very well sized for sharing - goes for $13. The Foie Gras is nice, as well - cost is $14. The Duck Two Way entree is excellent - duck confit & duck breast with sweet potatoes and baby spinach for $25. The Buttermilk Fried Catfish is outstanding and a nice portion - with mashed potatoes, cranberry cole slaw, and house made tarter sauce for $16. The Center Cut NY Strip is an excellent choice - with carmalized onion blue cheese potato gratin (as good a side of potatoes as you will find) & asparagus for $30. All great, we both really loved the soup. As far as entrees, I got the filet medallions covered in choron & onion jus with mashed potatoes and asparagus. I highly recommend the Crab and Shrimp Dip as an appetizer. I honestly could have eating that all night! DELICIOUS. I had the crab cakes with summer corn hash for an entree...DELICIOUS. The reason for the four stars and not five is that, I reserve five stars for amazing food. This food is good but nothing I would consider amazing. Had the fried oysters and fried calamari appetizers which were nicely prepared. The calamari were served with fried jalapeños which was a nice spicy addition. The oysters were very fresh and nice as well. My main course I had the special tenderloin which was great and my friend had scallops which was also enjoyed Desert was apple pie which was a good end to a very nice experience. We went on a weeknight before an event, so didn't have as much time to linger and enjoy multiple courses. That's on the agenda for the next time. We did note several apparent regulars as well as single diners that seemed comfortable in the dining room vs just at the bar. This to me is a sign of gracious accommodation. MJ's Steak and Seafood is a real gem. Located in an older house in Guilford College, the dinning areas are divided and rather small creating an intimate setting. The food is excellent, with terrific steaks and seafood. In my opinion, they really excel at seafood dishes on par with 1618. I'm a shrimp and grits fan and MJ's shrimp and grits can hold their own with the best Charleston has to offer. The service is very friendly and knowledgeable. The myriad of seating areas facilitates intimate evenings or semi-private areas for groups. They have a very small bar and feature live music on many weekend nights.
