We passed through Solvang on our way to Santa Barbara, hoping to pop into one of the many bakeries for a quick snack. Unfortunately, during this post-Christmas week the town was absolutely packed with people of a similar mind. The lines outside the bakeries were insanely long, so we quickly had to make a plan B, and Panino was it. We slipped in the door about 30 minutes before closing. There was a short line to place our order, so we thought that we'd get our food shortly, but in fact it took about 45 minutes to receive our order. All the while the staff was hard at work and a steady stream of sandwiches were delivered to the masses waiting outside. It perhaps would have been nice to inform us of the expected wait at the time we placed our order, but TBH it really wouldn't have changed our plan to order from there. Just a couple sandwiches today; - chicken and prosciutto on sourdough - decent amount of chicken but the prosciutto was a little sparse. A good meal nonetheless. - curried chicken on whole wheat sourdough - well-executed and delicious. The cranberries and apples were a good counterpoint to the slight spice and saltiness of the curry. Each sandwich was about $15 - maybe a little more than I would have paid for something similar at home, but not unreasonable. Our companions got their sandwiches at the place next door and paid considerably more. Service was friendly despite being overworked and tired at the end of the day. Overall, it was a fine meal here. If anything detracted from the experience, it was the atmosphere of Solvang as a whole. The cute small Danish town vibe isn't what it used to be, with crowded streets, long lines, and bumper-to-bumper traffic coming into town. Very different from our past visits. A shame, IMO. read more

In a pretty busy part of downtown Solvang is the cute little panini shop called Panino. Upon walking in it's very small inside it could probably seat about three couples or three families at the most but there's outdoor seating as well. They're obviously doing a lot in this quaint little space of theirs. They have a large chalkboard full of sandwiches and panini. We opted for their half soup and sandwich combos that were on a little chalkboard by the register. And that was a perfect thing for the cold rainy weather that we were having that day. This place is so cute inside! The cashier was also so nice to sweet. However the food is pretty average and okay. The Italian wedding soup was extremely bland and we had to ask for table salt to put inside. All three of our sandwiches also had pretty hard baguettes. The Turkey with Cucumber sandwich on focaccia is my absolute favorite. I recommend ordering a side of their balsamic dressing dip to accompany your sandwich with. It is very good and further enhances the harmony of flavors within the sandwich alone. Highly recommend to try their sandwiches. Enjoyed a half salad and half sandwich in this quaint little spot for lunch. The Cobb salad was fresh and a tasty twist on the original, using prosciutto and Stilton Blue Cheese. The Cotswold Cheddar Cheese sandwich paired nicely with the salad. I was able to wash it all down with a Carlsberg lager - my nod to the Danish heritage the town seeks to preserve. The chicken pesto was delicious and my mother loved the salad with all the fruit, though if there could have been an option to add chicken that would have made it even better. The bread was a little tough, but overall good. My only real qualm was that the wind picked up and we saw the umbrellas have a few incidents falling over. Some need better bases to avoid this. What a nice local-ish sandwich spot. It's located in the center of town. There's plenty of seating available inside and out. Panino offers a variety of fresh sandwiches and salads as well as lots of drinks. All their bread is baked fresh and so delicious. It's a humble little place with simple delicious food. The price point is moderate, about $11 for a sandwich before tip and tax. However portions are reasonable, food is nice, service on point and nice seating. Great for small to medium size groups. Plenty of free street parking, lots of pedestrian and car traffic so be careful walking and driving. read more

Okay, so we stopped by this little shop for a quick bite and because our food was so bad at a "Michelin Star" restaurant, I figured it was only fair to tell you that our dining experience was much better here. We ordered the 1/2 soup/sandwich combo. I ordered the goat cheese and the hubby a capresi-both had broccoli cheddar soup. Our server was friendly and made great recommendations. We both enjoyed the freshness of the bread and veggies and the light soup-not too heavy. We also enjoyed sitting outside in courtyard without loud music and screaming children. I'm a teacher, which means I talk a lot, or according to my students, I move my mouth a lot. So, I don't like food that requires a lot of chewing. I like to drink soup, eat noodles, and things that I can pretty much swallow without using much of my mouth musses. With that said, eating sandwiches are "always" the last thing I want to eat since it requires a lot of mouth moving. This place, however, is the only sandwich that I'm willing to use my mouth mussels for. The bread here are in perfect proportion with the meat, and lettuce. I ordered two different type of sandwiches; 1. Avocado and Provolone cheese with focaccia bread 2. Chicken, prosciutto, and basil on wheat. Shockingly, both of these sandwiches "DOES NOT" have mayo in it. If this was a sandwich from any other sandwich shop without mayo, it would taste dry and nasty. But, this is not the case here, it's fresh, crunchy, tasty, and simply delicious. You gotta try it! I also ordered the cobb salad, which was also delicious. I wonder how the lettuce is so fresh from all the way up in the mountain =_=??? I guess maybe they picked fresh lettuce every morning from their backyard because it sure taste like it. My husband and I fell in love with Panino in Santa Barbara. We celebrated our 10 years anniversary in SB and we stumbled across this local joint. We were in Solvang and found Panino. It consits of chunks of roast chicken mixed with Dried cranberries, Pine nuts, sliced apples, honey mustard & organic greens. The sandwich is a tad sweet and figured out, that they drizzle a little bit of honey on the focaccia bread which makes it different from any other sandwiches & extra special. My husband ordered the Chicken Salad Sandwich on Focaccia bread. It was also delish. Not as flavorful as the Curried Chicken though. We also shared the English Stilton, Asian Pear Chopped Walnut Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette. Everything about this salad is so refreshing.
