It's not a very big place and there isn't really much space to wait but people did start forming a line outside waiting to put their name down. You put your name down on a list and are told to return around a specific time frame. They do not offer texting when your place is open so you can't really travel very far. Service: The service there was fair. Understandably so, it was busy and our server didn't come around to us often while we ate. But she was kind and accommodating to our specific dietary needs (without making any faces). Food: so we came with a party of 7 so they accommodated us by joining two tables together. The food we had was okay. My favorite thing there was definitely the danish sausage which was cooked perfectly and had the perfect snap and bite to it. My sister in law said it was too gamey for her but I believe that is just a personal preference. The sausage was well cooked. The danish pancakes were just alright.... I like to think of them more like a crepe since they are relatively thin. We got ours with blueberries and the blueberries were also cooked well. It was lacking in flavor is all I can describe it. The scrambled eggs has absolutely zero salt. I believe they just cooked the eggs and brought it out. Overall I would say this place was underwhelming and I could not for the life of me understand why it gets so jam-packed. In my humble opinion. I'm a big fan of this location! The vibe is very old-school, and you can really taste the Solvang spirit in their food. It's wonderful. I went with my best friend, and he's extremely picky about his breakfast, but he truly loved the breakfast here. They made the eggs perfectly! He's still trying to recreate them at home, but he can't get them to taste the same lol. The breakfast here is really good. I got the Danish pancakes and they were so good! I was hesitant because I usually love regular pancakes, but these were even better, nice and airy, not too thick, and with just enough flavor to make you happy. We also got their mimosa special for two. They gave us these personal champagne bottles, which was so cute! We got to pop them open ourselves and pour them. It made the whole experience feel a little extra fun. The only reason I'm docking a star is because they don't accept reservations, and the wait time is at least an hour outside ( we waited an hour an 15 mins) in the blazing sun. The hostess managing the waitlist was also pretty crabby. At one point she closed the waitlist because there were too many people waiting for a seat. That said, once we were inside, the service was polite and the food came out quickly. I thought for a pancake spot these would either taste and look outstanding but it's nothing out of the norm of what you can get at an IHOP? While taking a weekend trip to Solvang I wanted to find the most authentic Dutch style breakfast. Paula's pancake house came right up. They don't take any reservations, but the wait honestly isn't bad because there are shops nearby that you can browse in while you wait for your name to be called. On the popular mission drive, this place itself is a landmark in Solvang. I was recommended this by a few locals who I ran into at my stay. This visit, a mixture of everything was had. The French toast, chicken fried steak with hash browns and a biscuit, the classic danish pancakes and lox Benedict with fruit. The food has always been great. Didn't take long to come out. The service was great and staff are all friendly and helpful. Constantly checking up to see if your coffee needed refilling. If anything else is needed. Good customer service is great here. Majority of time we've been, outside has alway been the place to sit. But inside does have a cozy feel to it. There's bar seating but I'm not sure if it's first come first serve or if you have to put your name down. Been here a few times now and it's always on and popping. Getting a table for weekend brunch can be a bit of a wait, but weekdays average something like 10-15 minutes. Parking is your usual toss-up. This time I was smart and got a hotel nearby, so we saved ourselves the frustration and walked. Like many places in Solvang, they have a signature dish - the Danish pancakes. Tried these a few times and I'm not sure these are for me. They're a little dense and the flavor is underwhelming. When paired with less than ripe fruit, it's a pass for me. Eggs are always good, but I did notice that the yolks are very light and therefore not as umami as I'm used to. It was kind of like... egg lite? The hash browns were alright, but again, nothing really to them. Biscuit and toast are okay. The turkey sausage was a huge hit with the kiddo, tho. Got a few lunch sandos for the rest of the party, which seemed to go over well. They tried the pastrami with cheese and chile, the grilled chicken with jack cheese, and had some fries. I think maybe that's the way to go if you are brunchin' - somebody gets something eggy, somebody gets something sandwichy, and you marry the two and dip your fries in runny egg yolk and ketchup. Yummmmmm! Coffee is coffee is coffee. Lattes are served in fancy cups with a little cookie, which is a nice bonus. Nothing outstanding in terms of flavor or brew, but it does the job. Price is pretty much like every other casual breakfast joint, which is to say it's fair for the food. Just wish the food was slightly more exciting. What really sucks is the slow service because they're perpetually understaffed. Of all the times we've come here, weekend or weekday, they never have enough people! I feel so bad for the servers because they seat a full house and then they're scrambling to keep up. It might bother some people, but I really like that there are birds on the outside patio just hanging around. You shouldn't feed them, but they'll snatch up your crumbs in an instant. You can tell they're used to people because they have no fear and no shame. They'll grab something off your table the moment you stand up. I think it's hilarious. Go birds! Wish there were less flies outside but it's clear the birds are used to getting their snacks from the restaurant. Overall, Paula's is worth trying at least once if you've in Solvang so you can form your own opinion. We came here for brunch at our stay in Solvang. Although very busy, we were seated quickly. We got the Danish pancakes they were flat and sweet. During our first visit to Solvang, my mom and I ate here on a sunny Saturday for lunch. Since there were two of us, we inquired about the wait time and were surprisingly offered two seats at the counter. We immediately grabbed the opportunity and not miss out on the delicious pancakes at this cozy restaurant. The ambiance gives homage to their Danish roots and unique Danish cuisine and architecture. We ordered our individual plates of Pancakes with Danish Sausage and Pancakes with strawberries. Our orders were delivered to our counter within 15 minutes. The presentation is phenomenal with the ingredients on top, with a few sprinkles of powdered sugar. The pancakes may look thin but they are fluffy, moist and delicious. The strawberries are in season and are perfectly sweet. The Danish sausage is tender and did not disappoint. I am also fond of their maple syrup. For folks who are dining as a group, please be sure to arrive extra early and expect a wait time. And depending on the volume of customers at a certain time, some pairs may find their luck to be immediately seated.
