Only reason I am giving one star is the waitress who finally took care of us was nice other wise this place would get a zero rating from me! Went for impromptu date night last Saturday and we were sat at a corner table in the window of the restaurant. A busser or waiter not sure what his role was came and brought the menus, water and bread and then disappeared for about 20 minutes. Actually, several waiters walked passed us without even acknowledging us. I was ready to leave when the waitress came over and said no one told her she was supposed to take care of us? Anyway, there was an elderly waiter with a toupee coming in and out from the outdoor dining area swearing in Greek and stating he wasn't taking anymore tables so loud almost the whole restaurant could hear him. The busser/waiter who first brought us menus made sure not to make eye contact with us and when he did he was scowling under his breath in Spanish to the other waiter. The waitress had to make our drinks which were not worth $12-14. Food was mediocre, you can actually get a better Greek salad at a local fast food restaurant. During this crazy time in the world, we ordered food from Papaspiros to avoid eating frozen pizza again. There was a mix up with the order (no ones fault) and we told them not to worry and cancelled. 20 minutes later the owner showed up at our door step with food and told us it was on the house. For some reason I thought I wasn't a fan of Greek food but I am so glad that Papaspiros proved me wrong. My boyfriend and I came on a week night and the restaurant was empty apart from another family, however it still felt quite warm and inviting. Our waiter was very friendly and joked with us very light-heartedly throughout our time there. Overall, the food was seasoned incredibly well, and all of the elements of each dish were optimally cooked. The portion sizes were healthy and we were comfortably full rather than busting our seams after our meal. Lamb: This was our favorite. I could probably order those lamb shanks and eat them one after another like chicken wings. Chicken and rice: I am normally a bit skeptical of chicken breast because of its tendency to be bland, dry, or both, but the char and marinade on the chicken was delicious! The waiter brought out a container containing all of the desserts, and since our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, we ended up getting 3 desserts! Tiramisu: This tiramisu was sweeter than others that I have had, and the taste reminded me of a chocolate candy like those lindt truffles. Flan: This was a very light, jiggly, flan with a hint of a citrus-y aftertaste. Chocolate Frog: Our waiter told us this one was for kids, but I believe we're all kids at heart. Two words: Hot. Garbage. More words: I rarely write reviews. And I almost never go out of my way to write a bad review. Let that serve as an indicator of just how much I disliked the ostensibly edible objects delivered to my door. We ordered a spanakopita, pasticcio, and some manner of shrimp pasta dish. The vegetables were quite obviously previously frozen and out of a bag with a large, green, leafy man on it. The seasoning was non-existent. The spanakopita had clearly been frozen. This food was sad. I have eaten big Macs which were prepared with more joy. I have had truck stop taquitos that had more intention put into their preparation. This meal was prepared by someone who really did not want to cook food. They may have wanted to sell food, but they didn't want to make it. Chicago, and by extension Oak Park, is a rich, vibrant food scene. If you can't put any joy or intention into the food that you cook, do something else, please. I've been here twice and will go again. But there's one little thing that sticks in my craw and that's when a restaurant puts the various tip calculations on the slip for our convenience, and indicates the high end but not the low end. This restaurant's low-end calculation is 18% and the highest is 22%. Maybe I'm the only one on the planet who thinks this is a negative reflection on the owners, but it bugs me, maybe because I used to have to sacrifice to eat out on a special occasion and the cost was painful--but I always tipped at least 15%. The poor get screwed enough already. Can't we let them eat out on a special occasion without making them feel like a 15% tip is a ripoff? (It used to be the standard.) Now that money is no longer that dire of an issue for me, I routinely tip at least 20% (often higher for top service or when I round it off). BUT whenever I see a set of suggested tips like at Papaspiros, I think about people out there who might want to eat out for a special occasion even though it is a sacrifice for them, and I don't like them being made to feel a 15% tip isn't fair. So when I see a 22% suggestion but not a 15% suggestion, I make it a point to calculate the tip myself, by hand--at only 15%. It's my own little protest. read more

Yelp should have a star category for a sort of Hall of Fame for people to select. Not only reserved for places that are stalwarts of the restaurant industry, consistently going above and beyond in quality, execution, and service but also for first time (or first round) knockouts, like that of Papaspiros! Something must be going on in the OP because this is the second time in as many months where we happened to check out a restaurant for the first time after hearing rave reviews, and upon walking away, were completely blown away, exceeding all (high) expectations we had coming in. The fact both of these places are family owned and operated just make it that much better and more enjoyable (the other being La Bella Pasteria). We came on a beautiful Monday evening around 7p and found the owner and a friend, chatting and enjoying a beer outside on the patio, he kindly greets us as we walk up and says we can have one of the few open tables outside....done and done. Enter the amazing, outstanding, wonderful Yani "not the musician" by his own admission but with hair like his, could pass imho. This is the type of guy (and service) that make you love dining out...especially if you're at a place for the first time. You are completely at ease and confident, in his very capable hands, you will be guided to the very best the place has to offer. So we did just that. Compulsory saganaki and Greek Salad as starters and they were, well, as good as each can get, top shelf. We then inquire as to our next selections and he explained everything in great detail and flair that only Yani (either one, as it were) could deliver. We put order in for the combination with gives a large assortment of some Greek favorites: Spanakopita, Moussaka, Pastichio, Dolmathes, and Gyros. Wow, aweseome, incredible, *insert fancy superlative here*. I must also mention that after we put our entree order in, after he came back around we grabbed him and said we forgot to put an order for the Lemon/Rice Soup, he says, "I bring you two, on the house!" Wha what?! Love this guy, Yani. A second "Wha what !?" moment is when I ask for another glass of their delicious, crisp and refreshing Roditis, he *again* says, this one's on us.OH MY. An employee called me claiming that they never received my order from Grubhub, insisted I was to blame for using Grubhub, and then attempted to argue with me about whether I still wanted the food. Judging by the reviews left on the Grubhub app, this is a regular problem with Papaspiros. I canceled and ordered from Jerusalem Cafe instead. A friend of mine told me to check this place out for there saganaki cheese. It was delicious. I tired the original saganaki and the shrimp saganaki. The shrimp saganaki was red pepper green pepper onions jumbo shrimp and pieces of saganaki was very delicious. If in the area stop in for some great saganaki. I met my sister and nieces for dinner at this neighborhood gem. The restaurant had been there long before I entered the local high school several (ok, more than several) years ago. Nevertheless, service was impeccable; the decor takes one to Greece and causes mental planning of a family trip there. The two teenagers in the group were clueless about Greek cuisine. I had an awesome time watching them struggle with pronunciations. The owner was there and joined in the fun as well! We ordered a cheesy flambée appetizer as well as calamari. Both were fantastic. I speak for the group in saying that we enjoyed tremendously. The menu had such a wonderful selection of entrées that it was difficult to choose. We all ordered something different and were extremely satisfied with the purchases. With appetizers and beverages, expect to spend about $40 per person. Great value, amazing service! I have to start with my positioning in the Restaurant. I am brunching at Papaspiros on a May Sunday afternoon, the west interior table with a great window view. My server is Louis, the absolute best waiter. He ordered all my food and wine, which is just delicious (hot small plates: the broiled octopus, the shrimp and red & white wine). The service is what you always hope for, knowledgable and kind. I had given up on Oak Park for true authentic cuisine and dinning experience until today with my waiter Louis. At one time, I believe I had referred to them as the worst Greek restaurant in the suburbs. Fast forward a few years and it seems that they've fixed their food, service was nice and friendly, and the overall experience was very good. The calamari was very tasty and not just some small rings of calamari, but large rings and tentacles. The shish kebabs were cooked to juicy perfection and the coffee did not taste burnt. Typical Greek menu including a lot of vegetarian and fish choices. Everything on the menu is good. I had the combination plate. Good, but instead of the gyros I would add a piece of lamb like I've had when ordering the combo at other Greek restaurants. Our service was attentive and helpful. If you're looking for a quick bite, some of the appetizers with a cup of the lemon soup and bread can be a filling meal instead of a full entree. The appetizers are ample and readily can be shared with a group. I would recommend the octopus or calamari.
