My favorite coffee comes from Paper Tiger! I grew up in Vancouver but now travel for my husbands job. My family still lives up there so they buy my coffee and ship it to me every couple months. This was my first experiance here and I have to say I loved the atmosphere, the look, the ambience. It was very relaxing, I ordered an Iced Mocha and my husband had a hot Latte, we both loved our drinks the total was $8.50 and I would have definatly bought more it was so good. Alright, so, Paper Tiger is a cool little place. I appreciate that they do their own roasting. I really liked the barista who served me when I went for the first time. The baked items were pretty good. I ordered a four-shot americano. I expected in this drink to get a robust, thick, delicious coffee flavor. A coffee experience should bring me to the region in which the coffee berries were grown and the locale in which they were processed. The complexity of the coffee needs to be like a symphony on my tastebuds, with so many different flavor notes playing a single composition to my brain. The problem at Paper Tiger, though, was the notes fell a little flat. There were wisps of greatness, but the players felt as if they were struggling to find their lungs to bring force really good coffee should have. I gave four stars for the whole experience. The coffee really was three stars--but could be five! I think the problem is the conductor to Paper Tiger's symphony. That is, they need a different espresso machine. They need a Marzocco, or at least a Synesso if they would like to be a little more regionally business minded. The players are all there. They just need the inspiration a truly good machine could bring to their orchestra. read more

I only ever support local businesses and am a HUGE coffee snob (sorry, I like what I like), so it's hard for me to find a coffee shop that actually makes my drinks how I like them. The coffee at Paper Tiger was delicious, the espresso was smooth with no bitter aftertaste.. this is the only reason I'll come back in the future. The bad? Well, I read some reviews of the staff being rude.. I definitely had a similar experience. They seemed less than thrilled about my being there. Kind of rude, no smiles, just gave me weird vibes. (I still tipped, though.) I do not like the taste of a certain brand of white chocolate, so I asked them what kind they use and they seemed to be kind of offended by the question. I also read they make some of their flavorings themselves, so that's another reason I asked, but the owner stated they are unable to make their syrups themselves anymore. I'll definitely come here again on my days off when I don't feel like driving to my own coffee shop to make my coffee myself, just because it's convenient and I can walk here, lol. read more

If you like getting talked down to, this is a winner! Barista was short and treated us like idiots. It's embarrassing to be talked down to-in my own line of work, in front of other customers (who jumped in on the chance to tell us this coffee isn't for sissies-so wrong) Don't assume everyone is from the Starbucks variety, I've been making premium coffee going on 10 years, i feel like I have a pretty good handle on it. Asked for a iced latte: ice, milk, espresso. Got-iced coffee (tastes exactly like cold brew...yes i know what that tastes like) plus, poured from a jug gives that away, diluted with milk add ice. charging $4 for an iced coffee and calling it a latte is no good for anyone- and you're not improving coffee knowledge. It's acidic and gives me heartburn, so I have that too look forward too-thanks. Besides I wanted freaking espresso. Also, don't tell my husband he doesn't want extra shots, the condescending "have you had our coffee before??!!" Doesn't help, and it's relatively comparable to other roasts in the Portland area - fyi. Maybe the owners are great, it's cool you make your own chai and syrup, but needless to say, not going back. Acting like you're on some higher level whilst not knowing your customer base doesn't sit well with me. Tip of the day: a barista should be FRIENDLY and informative, you'll make more tips, customers and money overall. read more

Paper Tiger Coffee was highly recommended by many of my friends, and so one day when I found myself wandering over to the Columbia River Waterfront I decided to stop by and see what all the fuss is about. First of all let me just say that the coffee is great. I got the first cup from a new pot of coffee and the taste was very smooth, strong, and clean. My pumpkin scone was moist and satisfied my sweet tooth quite nicely. For $3.75 this midmorning pick-me-up was worth the stop. The only thing was the whole "Portland vibe" felt a little forced. What others have found cute and charming I found to be a kind of obnixious (the ye'olde candyshop cash register for example). The art was totally random and there was a LOT of it, but I think that was because they were getting ready for an art festival that week. I did like the bookshelf of classic books by the door, I was bummed I didn't have any to trade. The baristas were friendly, but super spacey. I asked what kind of scones were in the case, and from the look on the guy's face you'd think I'd just asked him to split and atom. "PUMPKIN?" he replied. Um, there were clearly also some with berries... but ok, pumpkin sounds good. Then mentally processing the price for a cup of coffee and a scone took... longer than necessary (again, a problem that a normal cash register could solve). But overall he was nice and cute so I do not hold this momentary lapse of mental stamina against him. I will probably stop by again for the yummy coffee soon, but if I'm looking for the "vibe" I'll just drive the extra 15 mins to Portland. read more

I was over by Clark College and desperate for a cup of coffee one morning. By accident, I found Paper Tiger and am so glad I did. They had baked goods that they told me were supplied by a local bakery. I've had great brewed coffee and scones there on several occasions. They have a small collection of used books for sale-mostly classics. It's fun to look through the books and find the one you've been meaning to read all these years. They said they accept donations of books, as well. read more

This place has a great atmosphere. They have beautiful, large tables. They have no flavors: that's correct...straight coffee only here. I received a sneer for even trying to order a latte. I purchased a baked good and coffee. The coffee was no better than my French press at home for far less. The baked good was acceptable, not notable...just acceptable. Lastly, the only parking available is limited to two hours, one hour, or half an hour in a parking lot. There is no street parking. read more

A cool espresso shop that roast their own coffee. There is also a communal feel as there are Intellectuals of Clark students and teachers that have healthy debates and get-ta-gethers.. Even though there are teachers there it seems the students don't head for the hills when a teacher comes in but is filled with a warm-welcome. This isn't my normal coffee hangout but seems like I sliped in someones elses cheers. but rather being someone background extra,but was welcomed and engaged in conversations. So as a self admitted Seattle Coffee Snobs we just found a true treasure in Vancouver, Washington of all places! Paper Tiger Coffee Roasters on Grand Blvd was a non-descript coffee shop where they actually DO roast their own beans and not just have their bean roasted for them. They are well educated on the craft of coffee and are not pretentious or frustrating to order from. They answered all of our (I''m sure irritating) questions and we're really helpful. These guys have got the art of coffee DOWN! They have specialized drips and styles of coffee conjuring crafts that would make Seattlites very proud! If your in the area and need a quality Joe, it's worth the effort to check them out. If I ever re-locate to Vancouver, I would move to this neighborhood BECAUSE of it's proximity to Paper Tiger and it's community involvement. I don't drink much coffee but I've been in here to meet with someone for tutoring sessions. The atmosphere is comfortable and cozy. It was calm and quiet for working too. The prices are pretty standard considering you pay a little more for quality (compared to a Dunkin Donuts type place). But it definitely beats chains like Starbucks. I've read reviews in regards to the workers but I've only had good interactions. Usually I give a place I don't frequent an average rating but I truly respect how the owner/manager is active on Yelp and responds to reviews. This is a big deal. He actually cares, which is why I'd go back if I ever started drinking more coffee. One of my last reviews of another cafe pointed out how I emailed an owner about a bad experience. Happen to stop by for lunch when I looked up coffee shops nearby. Place was very chill with great decor. Nice place to study or relax. Parking was very easy shop is a bit small but cozy. Coffee was great I'd love to try their other bean varieties. They make their flavor syrup in house too. My eye is on the black currant one next time I go in. I also tried their marionberry scone. Easy to find location, close to my house and the coffee is LOVELY. I personally go for the Chati and get it ground to suit my needs. Sometimes for my french press but usually for my Keurig. Wonderful flavor and finish. I'm really happy when I can find a roast that I enjoy without any cream or sugar. That to me is what good coffee is..sorta like whiskey or a good steak. The prices are good for what you get. A nice quality coffee, roasted on site and a helpful staff plus a cozy location if you want to grab a cup there. Great local roaster. They do it in small batches and really care about the craft. The drinks are well-made and the staff are quite nice and knowledgeable. A favorite among locals, this place would get a bunch more curiosity and incidental traffic if it were in a different location. Not a lot of walk-by shopping/errands type of traffic here. The place could use some sprucing up. there are old tables and chairs that could be replaced and there are strange rocker chair things (seriously) that I've seen more than one person struggle with and not sit in due to how awkward it looks in public. The thing that I love and hate most, however, is the exposed coffee roasting area. I love that it's there for us to see and would love to watch it work and watch a class by the roaster. I love that there are actual burlap sacks of raw beans waiting for the roaster stacked up (like hops and malt bags at a brewer)...but I hate how his work-station is cluttered and right next to it where everyone can see all his notes. It's like the messy disappointment you experience when the Wizard is accidentally revealed in Oz. The bathrooms are not great, but they do the trick...they might be a little too dive-y for this place. If these last two points alone were taken care of, this would be a 5-star review all day long. However, all of these things almost add to the charm that is the quintessential local-support structure of small businesses. People leave cards and brochures. There's a free book trade area that is rather well-stocked, and you can purchase some wares from other local businesses too. All in all, it's about the coffee though. And on this front, they can't be beat. They are as good as any roaster in Portland and Vancouver...and maybe in the top 5% of any of those. If you're anywhere near and you want a good cup of anything they sell, stop in and you won't be disappointed. read more

Been here twice to meet with my former priest "off site." She recommended it. I am not a coffee drinker, but do enjoy chai tea, and was pleasantly surprised by the good taste both times. My only complaint was that the tea was not hot, but only warm at best-like you had let it sit on the table for a few minutes before serving it. Happened both times. Perhaps that is just your way of serving it or something. I just know when I ask for it to be hot, that I should receive it hot. But I do enjoy the atmosphere, the baristas were nice if somewhat standoffish, and the decor is "comfortable." Much better than any Starbucks. read more
