My first coffee shop on a small tour in Portland and Bend. My wife and the family were starving after our flight from Dallas, so I dropped them at nearby Bamboo Sushi (highly recommended) and I'd catch up with them after a couple of espressos. I chatted with the barista, he was super nice and had some time to chat, so talked coffee and what they were brewing, which was the house blend and a single origin, I asked for one of each. The single origin was light and fruity as I'd expect, nice acidity and a crisp finish, whereas the house blend, their Deviation Blend, had a stronger body and less acidity, but still managed to get in some good notes of dried fruit and a nutty flavor. Both were perfectly pulled, with nary a bitter or sour note to be found. All in all, a great little quick trip for coffee, a place I'd definitely go to again. read more

We have been dreaming about returning to this Case Study since we first visited in the summer of 2023. In October 2024, we spent a week in the Alberta district and thoroughly enjoyed walking to coffee from our AirBnB. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. While seating can be limited, we've been fortunate to share a spot at the community table or sit outside. The service was friendly and provided helpful information to hopeful locals. I love their Bourbon Vanilla Latte! The pumpkin bread slice was mahoosive and delicious with an autumnal crumble topping. We look forward to returning soon. My wife purchased a decaf latte here. It is so creamy and good with an excellent flavor. The decor here is really cute, they have bench for waiting on the lower level and seating upstairs. We met a friend at Case Study in the neighborhood after hearing they were well-liked and used Coava Beans! It seemed like a popular spot with many people stopping in or sitting for a drink and a pastry. We got a hot latte and a hot cinnamon malted maple latte - the barista mentioned it wasn't very sweet, but I found it to be quite sweet. Next time I'd ask for less sweetener, though the flavor was great. The hot latte was...not as great. It tasted almost entirely of steamed milk and had almost no flavor of coffee. Good spot - awesome location and cute vibe. The chai was excellent, as was the bannana bread and the service was good and prompt. One complaint - tried paying with a $10 bill and was told "um, we don't take cash. We can't give you change." What sort of business doesn't take cash, or "doesn't have change"? Seems kind of discriminatory against people who don't have a bank card or credit card to me. I suppose it's a nice way to take advantage of (or avoid) the homeless population who might be paying cash only, or make them less likely to come in and scare off your regular customers. This Case Study is a great place to come and study (no pun intended) they have a balcony inside with plenty of seating. The baristas are nice and friendly. I would say that the coffee that they offer is ok, middle of the road I had one of their newer drinks a spicy Mexican Mocha and it wasn't spicy at all. I came here for some good coffee and this place did the trick! I treated myself to a hazelnut latte and it was perfect. I spent the better part of my morning upstairs, which had additional seating apart from the outdoor benches. It has a very cozy vibe, though I wish the furniture was a little more comfortable. Came here on a chilly day, so as soon as we stepped inside, I felt the warmth and coziness of the space. It's quintessential Portland coffee shop vibes with the dark woods and black accents. Definitely a great spot to come chill at or do some work. All the baristas had hip vibes too. I got a Masala Latte with oat milk. I had a small Cafe Con Miel with oat milk, a perfect blend of coffee, cinnamon, honey, and a touch of salt. This coffee shop has a second floor with some desk seating that hearkens back to my school days: nostalgia! As we were the only customers in the shop for a bit, my husband and I were able to converse with Sara and learn about the other Case Study locations and even got a few tips on where we can hike the next time we visit Portland. They seemed fairly busy, which is usually a good sign. Once it was our turn, I asked the staff who was taking orders if the chai was on the spicy or sweet side. Not a fan of their attitude but as my fiance reminded me later, the pandemic has jaded a lot of service industry folks. They make their chai in-house, which is a plus. However, it tasted watered down. The person making the drinks was preoccupied talking with two other people about their Instagram. Case Study has 4 locations but since I happen to be in the NE Alberta neighborhood...just had to find it (9/27/19). I had a choice between two indie cafes. Surprisingly, what got me to stop in were the distinct light fixtures and I can see a microroaster towards the rear of the cafe. Hardly criteria to gauge, but had a feeling. Two level location, the laptop set were well entrenched upstairs. I remained downstairs after ordering a chai ($5.25). This allowed for people watching and conversation without the excessive din. There is also additional outdoor seating enclosed from the elements. Totally hipster baristas up front. Another person organizing stuff by the microroaster was very focused with tasks at hand. I noticed a tiny pastry case, coffee beans for sale, signature cold brew, chai concentrate, and other merchandise. Chai had perfect flavor and warmed me up nicely while I just absorbed the atmosphere. Glanced at a proximate cortado and mocha, while sipping my chai. Glad to have done this because the rain picked up from mist to cold drizzle. Ready to migrate. read more

Case Study's coffee is good with the right staff. In the mornings they are usually on point and I enjoy it. I came on Sunday afternoon, the barista was a lady of shorter stature with tattoos, my wife went to the bathroom while she made us both cappuccinos. When the cappuccinos were ready I noted that the milk was extremely burnt and the milk was frothed to a whipping level, and the coffee had lots of grit not very professional. It indicates lack of care for customers, quality was worse than Starbucks . I recommend you do not come while she is working. Also the bathroom was filthy today, seemed like it was not cleaned all day. I am long time goer of Case Study, so sad to see the quality dropping. read more

Really beautiful space! I wish they were fully open as their decor looks super cool on both floors and seem like a nice place to work or hangout. They do have a couple tables outside for you to enjoy your drink after you order though which they share with tin shed cafe next door. For our visit we ended up trying the lavender honey latte (iced) and golden milk (hot) and both were delicious! Would recommend both if you want something on both ends.
