I wasn't surprised to hear how long some of the staff had been there....cause so many customers and staff were on a first name basis. What I was surprised was how long they worked there, 27, 20, 16, 15, 8 years, and not even a paid birthday off. No cake, no gift card, no acknowledgement of dedication their profession. A lot of the regulars felt the same way. You seldom hear employees staying at one company that long. We all know how hard restaurant work is. If someone remembered me on my birthday, I would sell a heck of a lot more food. read more

Papermill place is definitely one of the better breakfast restaurants in Winchester. It has the feel of a diner on the inside. The servers are nice. The portions are large. The food is pretty good. I ate scrambled eggs, sausage links, and hash browns. This full place costs around 5 bucks for it all too. Just overall, Papermill is solid. I will likely return. It finally happened. After 15 years of terrific service and food- Papermill became just like the others. Horrible, I mean horrible service. The waitress had 3 tables and was gone forever. Didn't get the orders right, 35 minutes to get an omelette done wrong. One cup of coffee offered in 35 minutes and only because another waitress said she thought we looked like we needed something. No manager walking about to check on things. Worst experience in 15 years. I heard other patrons chiming in on poor service and extreme waits. So sad. Don't hire people who can't do the job. I ate there at lunch and had a patty melt with cottage cheese and a fruit salad. I sat at the bar and could literally reach out and touch the cooks. I will not be eating there again. After my food was cooked, I watched the cook move a dirty (make that very dirty) hand towel with bottom of his spatula and then keep on cooking with it. The towel was lying on a ledge that he was placing his finished product and that ledge was plenty dirty with food droppings. Had this happened before I had gotten my food, I would have left the place. I know it was crowded and they were moving food very quickly but there is no excuse for such actions. read more

A very disappointing breakfast experience. On the plus side, our waitress was wonderful and really went to bat for us. However a warning: custom requests are NOT WELCOME at this restaurant! We asked our waitress to leave one item off of a standard menu offering. Overpriced for poor quality of food. This was our second time back, we had hoped that our first experience was just an off day for the kitchen. The photos on the website made the food look so appetizing we decided it was worth trying again. Big mistake. When my husband's omelet arrived, it obviously was made with one egg, flat as a pancake with barely any filling and had the consistency of rubber. I ordered a breakfast taco which was one cold flour tortilla with barely any scrambled egg inside. We would have sent it back but we had waited so long for the food we decided to just finish our coffee, leave and go somewhere else to get a decent breakfast. OK at best. The food is good, if you go on the right day. Went here with family a few weeks ago, and they were served vegetable soup that looked as if it was at least a week old, and was VERY sour to the taste as if it had seriously gone bad. I ordered wing dings, which were really good with great fries, so I guess you could say hit and miss with the food, which overall quality has dramatically gone down through the last 10 years. I've lived in this town just at 3 years and just finally decided to drop in as it is one of the last restaurants I haven't tried. I imagined its where all the Winchester longtimers assemble, and on the first guided voyage to our table by a whip-smart waitress, we passed an awful lot of regulars who all made eye contact, but with a smile and welcoming southern charm. It's a cozy diner that hasn't been updated since it was built, kinda like your Aunt Vicky's den--and that's quite alright because you feel at home and can focus on relaxing and enjoying the company of who you're with, or you can grab a seat at the grill/bar and see the scalloped potato action up close. The menu has all the expected Denny's-like items, something for everyone. My last two visits I grabbed breakfast, even for lunch and both times it did not disappoint. This visit I had the skillet with corned beef hash, onions, peppers, 2 eggs/medium, sautéed home fries, and topped with jack provolone cheese. Oh yea, and some jalapeños. It was excellent with the eggs cooked perfect and lots of bold flavors. My wife and I went here for dinner the other day. It was her third time there and my first. The staff was very friendly and the food was served promptly and was very good. I have been eating here since literally before I was born, so I might be a bit biased here; just bear with me. I could not imagine Winchester without this place. If you're looking for great southern food, this is the only place to go if you're in the area. They have a lot of different things on the menu, and they recently remodeled the place, so it's a lot cleaner than it was before. You can see your food being prepared right in front of you by the head chef, Alex, if you sit at the bar, and it's cheap too. With 18+ years of experience eating here, I would definitely recommend the turkey club sandwich (ask for the real turkey, because sometimes Alex uses cold cuts), the country ham sandwich (for breakfast), and ESPECIALLY the sweet tea. The only detriment I can think of to this place is that it is very busy in the mornings, but otherwise, it's great! read more

The home fries were not really home fries, they were just hunks of potatoes that were unseasoned with no onions. The hash was laughable, it was from a can. I did not expect gourmet food at this restaurant; however, if there is a item on the menu, I fully expect the chef to prepare it in at least a halfway decent manner. I wanted something heavier than a sandwich and made the mistake of ordering the shrimp alfredo. To put it bluntly, what was presented to me was a perfect example of why food inspectors shut down restaurants. The shrimp was rotten and smelly. The chef should be ashamed of himself/herself for preparing and presenting food that could cause illness to a patron.
