This place administratively discharged my daughter after a week. And gave me 2 hours to come get her even though I live 2 hours away. And if I didn't they would be calling CPS and the cops. They also never gave me a discharge summary or any documentation. The staff there have not returned calls, emails, or texts. Very unprofessional. read more

This review is entirely about the financial practices at Paradigm/Altior. Do believe all the other reviews about the difficulty in getting your pre-payments refunded after reconciling with your insurance company. It was 5 months after discharge for all the insurance claims to be properly submitted (two claims needed to be resubmitted multiple times) and our refund processed. Paradigm did require an amount equal to our Annual Max Out of Pocket up front since the stay included January 1. The care our child received was good. We felt they were safe and well cared for. If the child is willing to do the work, the program can be helpful. read more

My daughter was never given the chance to be accepted into the program. After clinician review, the team denied her acceptance. When I asked what (exactly) about her situation did not match the program criteria, they did not give me an answer. The way they handled the denial was unprofessional and not informative. My child nearly died while at Paradigm. My child went in with depression ( previously diagnosed) and stayed with Paradigm for over 6 weeks. During her stay she was diagnosed on a 20 MINUTE ZOOM CALL with their psychiatrist, with Bipolar II. (I just recently found out how insanely quick she was diagnosed). Based on this diagnosis she was given Lamictal. 2 weeks later when they upped her dose, she developed a rash and was feeling very unwell. They did nothing. They said they were "letting her rest" -I had to call in multiple times to request they take my child to urgent care. Several days went by and they still did not take her off the medication- she began to decline- I had to demand they take her to ER. I'm very angry that their doctors didn't immediately respond to the rash since that is a possible side effect of the medication. ER transferred her to the hospital, put her on IV and began doing blood panels I immediately flew in from NC to CA to be with my child when they took her in. When I arrived, she was covered from head to toe in a painful rash, had a fever of 104*, and her face had started swelling. Why on earth, did I have to be the one to tell the staff to seek medical attention?? Within two days she was so sick and her face and neck were so swollen, her eyes were closed shut. In fear of her throat closing up and her not being able to breathe, ( which was where the hospital believed this was heading) they transferred her to ICU, where, after continuous monitoring and testing, being placed on oxygen, given high levels of steroids, blood tests every 4 hours round the clock to figure out what was wrong, they finally discovered after a biopsy, that she had dress syndrome as a result of the Lamictal given to her by the doctor at Paradigm. I understand that people have reactions to medications BUT for them to sit back for days and do nothing when a rash appeared. For a psychiatrist to make a diagnosis within 20 minutes of seeing her 1 time??? NOT OKAY and completely on Paradigm for what happened and why I would never trust my child in a facility like that. You just never expect it to be your kid to go through something like that. We spent 3 weeks at the hospital between ICU and the pediatric ward....you can imagine the level of distress to both myself and my child. I honestly didn't think I was going to be bringing my baby home again. Now we're dealing with insane hospital bills pouring in. Even though she's home, this is far from over- may child has to see doctors several times a week ( cardiology, immunology, pediatrician, nefarology, dermatology) she had to wear a heart monitor, has continued weekly blood tests, has barley any energy, is recovering from muscle atrophy...and may potentially relapse, develop heart inflammation and auto immune disease.... In addition to this they lost multiple items of her belongings and one of the staff members keep 100's of dollars of brand new clothes that we brought over to her on a weekend visit, that she never even received and have "no idea where it disappeared to!!!) Suffice to say , I do not recommend Paradigm Treatment Center. read more

Any paying parent, step parent, or other person should be well aware that they will assure you (as they did to me and my husband) that Paradigm will get any money from insurance and then reimburse you (because you have to pay up front). We were nervous about this because the insurance covering this was through my husband's ex-wife, so we didn't want to have to go through her to try to get our refund from insurance for the portion my husband owes. Well, turns out that insurance directly reimbursed the ex, not Paradigm. They were supposed to let us know what the ex got from the insurance company, but they haven't followed up with us at all, even after asking them repeatedly. What's even more disturbing is that accounting acknowledged that my husband and I are due a refund directly from Paradigm (not insurance) because my step-daugher left early (so we overpaid). Accounting even asked for our address to send the check, but then the woman in accounting said she has to talk to the ex-wife first (?). Talk to her about what? We paid (overpaid!) our portion due, and that is obvious. The check hasn't arrived. I've emailed accounting twice and even sent a letter to the CEO about this matter, but I haven't even been acknowledged. Based on this terrible experience alone, I do not recommend it. read more

My son was super depressed, completely defiant and starting to self medicate. He had control over our household and we were completely blindsided by who he had become in such a short period of time. His behavior changed drastically within a matter of three months and our family knew we needed a higher level of support to help him. We were extremely worried about sending someone in his condition to a Wilderness program, but felt we had no options until we discovered Paradigm. In our situation, we believed sending him to a place that would immediately provide him with hope and not require him to achieve levels to get there was ideal. The staff was amazing, extremely professional, caring and genuine. They spent many hours with us trying to figure out what was in our son's best interest and laid out strategies to get him there. During his treatment it became evident that his ADHD and a non diagnosed behavioral issue was at the core of his depression. Paradigm was patient and offered every resource they had to help us. They extended his stay and allowed us time to process their recommendations until we could determine next steps. The staff is top notch (something we realized when he was there, but was only more reinforced being home and trying to find quality therapists), but they do not fix your child's behavioral issues. What we felt they were best at was offering a safe environment for your child to identify what makes them feel angry, sad, depressed, hopeless, etc. and then they work hard to give them the coping tools and skills they need to live a happier, healthier life. Again, they can not make your child change something he/she is not ready to change. We ended up staying for almost 2 months and he was able to come directly home after many long sessions with their highly skilled therapists. It was extremely difficult and we hit many rough patches, but we made it and are so happy with our decision to keep him there. He's a much happier person and practices many of the coping skills he learned at Paradigm. They are also available to him if he needs to talk about something that he can't address with us or his therapist. This has been EXTREMELY helpful to his treatment. In all honesty, we are still struggling with his behavior (but mostly normal teen issues now), but not even close to what it was before he went. In addition to giving the teens coping skills, they work directly with the families weekly to teach parents how to have open communication and be more present in their lives. They have at least one weekly family session with a designated therapist via skype and one full day Saturday session just for parents in the am and then all families in the pm - it works!!! We went to EVERY Saturday session and learned so much about parenting in a much different way than we ever thought possible. You learn that you are not alone and there is hope - which is so important during these very difficult times. We miss it, we love it and we are so happy with our decision to send our son there. There are only two things I can think of that I wish I would have known, but I don't think that these have anything to do with Paradigm's reputation because these are universal issues. - There are kids that have way more experience with drugs than our child did (but this is going to be in any program) -It's extremely difficult for a child to change when they have no desire to (I think this is why wilderness programs are so successful if you can stomach it). Lastly, every parent I met there was happy they sent their child and have had positive results. Good luck! read more

If your kid struggles with psychiatric issues- see a neuro-optometrist first. After Paradigm couldn't help my daughter, I was told she's in for a "difficult life". We saw a neuro-optometrist and discovered she has 10 hidden vision problems that appear like psychiatric problems. Paradigm Malibu is fraudulent. Difficult to contact and they still have not replied to me for insurance reimbursement. We never completed a discharge meeting and was left with "ideally, call 911" as my resource for future problems. Even after spending my retirement money on this place for 35 days, we were left with no solutions and little money. A neuro-optometrist is what saved us. How we perceive the world is through visual pathways... it's beyond 20/20 vision. Don't waste your money on this place. Scrolling down I realize others have had issues with reimbursement- that were resolved after a few years. I'm not holding my breath, but will keep trying. (I gave one star, to make a comment, but they don't deserve any stars.) read more

Instead of a kind tone and welcoming arm Dr. Neumann gave us attitude, arrogance, a distinct lack of kindness and simply disregard for what we, the parents of a troubled child were telling her to be true. We were unceremoniously dropped, without any guidance or suggestion for further resource or assistance which we desperately need. When I called to discuss with them, instead of understanding and kindness I received defensive and aggressively unkind push-back. How this is representative of deep personal care and commitment to the psychological health of people is impossible to see. I suggest that their organization are at heart dishonest and disingenuous. The very thing my son needs is to be accepted and nurtured - and the experience at Paradigm caused him to retreat into himself, lose self-esteem, and only affirmed his deep distrust of people. For this I blame them because they did no investigation into him and refused to listen, This is not the kind of environment you would want to send your troubled child into. read more

Very outdated treatments and understanding of some mental illnesses. I left Paradigm with more trauma and a misdiagnosis (even though I already had the correct diagnosis upon admission). DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE IF YOU CARE ABOUT THEM! This place is a joke. It is a money grabber, and they do not care about your child. All the patients had to go to other programs afterward because they didn't get better but WORSE. All the therapists are not certified (except one) and are there to complete their hours. They don't care about the children but rather talk bad behind them and all their fellow patient's backs in group chats between staff. I have seen proof with my own eyes that they made fun of my child(what they wear and dress) in a group chat. The main person, whose name starts with a T, is never available to talk or is even on-site whenever there is a problem or just in general. The CAs are not qualified to help children who, at times, are mentally unstable. Before sending my child, they said the kids would be having issues with depression and anxiety, and that's all. They said no hard drug addicts or 'bad kids.' They also said there would be a certified teacher for school. The teacher was not a school teacher but rather just a CA who was promoted and called a teacher. The teacher had an IQ of 5, and almost all the kids were smarter, and he couldn't help them with their work. While my child was there, three girls tried to kill themselves, and another one tried to overdose on pills because they weren't watching them closely, so they hid their meds and took them all at once and had to go to the hospital. There were also fights that happened on occasion. Multiple kids had come from psych wards when not ready to leave them and was a harm to themselves and others. Also, another time a patient stopped breathing because of an allergic reaction which they told the CAs about beforehand but didn't take seriously and thought they were trying to get out of an activity. The person was lying on the floor for 5-10 minutes, not breathing and unconscious, before the CAs called help. These situations are a regular occurrence where they don't know how to act or handle the kids. The list goes on. The night staff rarely check in on the kids, and when they do, they intentionally shine a light in their face, so they know they were checked on and wake up (They are supposed to be check in on every 15 mins. They check about 1-2 hours). One time my child woke up, and the night staff was asleep in a therapy room out cold when they needed help and had to go back to sleep when in pain. They promise individual therapy every day except for weekends which is a total lie. My child would get 2-4 sessions a week, where kids who acted out got multiple sessions a day. Group sessions are useless to these kids because everything they say is written down and talked about by the staff. CONFIDENTIALITY is NOT a thing. All the staff see and has everything written in individual therapy sessions. Also, all the tests, including the MMPI and DAS, are included in these files. The CAs look through the files and talk and laugh about some of the problems these children are experiencing when they should be trying to help. They even told another patient something very personal that was brought up in an individual therapy session about a different patient, which is totally against the law and HIPAA. I would give this no stars if that was an option. I have to say there are two positives about Paradigm. The food and the family therapist. EVERYTHING ELSE SUCKS! I write this not to bash them but rather to save you the trauma and bad experiences my family and many others have endured. If you take away anything from this, DONT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE IF YOU LOVE/CARE ABOUT THEM. read more

She wasn't able to hide in her bs answers like at other facilities, she was really given a chance to talk honestly about what was going on and help her get to a place where she could work from. The support, the therapy (OMG the THERAPY can we just say?! Not just for our teen but our family trying to really heal and come to a better way to communicate!) When things get hard, you aren't always sure who is going to be there - but the Paradigm Malibu staff had her back and ours. Over the course of my 20+ year career in the mental health field I have been exposed to a large variety of treatment programs for adolescents. I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. I have never experienced a program however, as exceptional as this. The credentials of the staff are impeccable and they maintain an unprecedented staff to client ratio of 1:1 for most of treatment. In addition to providing group therapy multiple times each day, they also provide individual therapy every day! This is really far and above the usual treatment in adolescent care. Also, they have a large continuum of experiential therapies, including an exhaustive menu of expressive arts therapies. Every single client I have referred, or placed there, has seen great benefit. Families have consistently thanked me with enthusiasm that is rare. If you have an adolescent with a mental health concern or an addiction, you can't do better than this program. While it's not the cheapest program, it is a great value. Because of it's limited size - it can be difficult to get in. Which also is a good thing as well! read more

It may not be evidence based and the professionalism may not be up to the standards of other people, but they're doing something right. My son went to this program. It was INCREDIBLE!!! We were able to get him on track with communicating better and teaching him that drugs are not part of his future. He feels more and more empowered each time he says NO! His communication skills with our family has improved greatly. We appreciate knowing we can always go to Paradigm for help if needed! I'm so thankful for Paradigm. My daughter struggles with PTSD, and associated depression, anxiety, Trichotillomania, and self-harm. After many hospitalizations, outpatient programs, and a different residential stay, we felt like we were spinning our wheels. It seemed like no one could tap-in to her unique story. I went looking for THE BEST program and found Paradigm. I took the chance of sending her across the country to get her the help she deserves, and it's one of the best choices I've ever made. She made exponential progress in the 46 days she was there, well above and beyond all the help she received in the prior year combined. The environment at Paradigm is welcoming and friendly and my daughters self-confidence improved greatly. She found her voice, and has started advocating for herself and her unique needs. From the very first phone call to Paradigm, I felt understood and at ease. As a parent, this has been the hardest year of my life. I'm so grateful for the support of the Paradigm staff. I'm sure Paradigm is good for some. Just be careful . they tell you everything you want or need to hear, but can't deliver. My daughter was there for 3 weeks and they sent her home saying they are not the best fit. then they basically do a google search to give you referrals for another program. the whole mental health system is so broken. These centers take your cash and do not care about your kids. They take advantage of parents that just don't know what to do. it's sad and Paradigm is no different. just remember, it's a business. After much research, multiple phone calls to ensure and EXTREME ASSURANCE from Paradigm this would be the right program to our son we admitted him. We gave them extremely detailed history of our son, his anxiety, behaviors, challenges etc. we were ASSURED THAT THESE ARE THE VERY BEHAVIORS they HAVE EXPERTISE in working with. They assured us that they work with his age group and that they work with even younger children than our son. Week later we get a phone call that our son had been in an "extremely heavy group therapy" session, had run upstairs and tried to jump off the balcony. Our son told us "the group therapy was too much, everyone was crying, and I told them it was too much, but they were'n paying attention so I had to do something because I got too anxious". [We have asked multiple times who and the qualifications of the therapist, the staff client ration and we have not been told.] Our son was placed on a 72 hour hold, taken to the ER room. We were called that this would be taking place. We received a text with the hospital address. NO ONE told us that there were no adolescent beds in the psychiatric hospitals, and that our son would be there all night. It would have been thoughtful of Paradigm to let us know that I'd be staying the night at the hospital with my son, so I could have been prepared for that. After a night in the ER where our son who suffers from severe anxiety, was exposed to adult screaming incoherently, an adult patient begging the doctor to give him medicine to end his life and all the other sounds / commotions of a ER, our son was transferred across the city to an adolescent unit for three days. During those three days, NO ONE called us from Paradigm to see how our son was doing. WE CALLED Paradigm to let them know which hospital he was in. NO ONE CALLED US to find out how he was doing at the hospital, OR discuss what would be taken place after he was discharged. NO ONE talked to the hospital psychiatrist or case manager. The day before discharge I called Paradigm to discuss his ongoing treatment, the program manager calls me, and tells me with no elaboration that they would not be taking our son back and that their recommendation is we send our son to Indiana, which "your insurance probably covers for". When pressed for more information on the reasons for this decision, I was told "because of his immaturity and impulsivity", the very behaviors we had been ASSURED ON REPEATED BASIS they were experts in treating and working with. The promised "thorough and extensive discharge plan" during admission was a one line link to a facility to Indiana. Since then we have come to find out that rest of the clients were 17 / 18 year olds - anyone with any understanding of child development and psychology would know how unethical and inappropriate it would be to place an immature 14 year old in a group therapy with 17/18 year olds. We have also found out that no one from Paradigm ever contacted our son's psychiatrist who has worked with him for over a year. No one from Paradigm contacted the hospital Psychiatrist or the case manager. We would ABSOLUTELY NOT recommend Paradigm Malibu for anyone, unless you meet the extremely narrow criteria they seem to be able to work with. There is a complete disconnect between their admission process and the therapeutic program they promise. read more

I am so happy to have found Paradigm Malibu as a place that actively cares about teenagers and their families as they tackle tough questions and look honestly at what's going on. From the minute that we called and talked to Cole, I knew that we had found the right place. From the intake process and diagnosis to the treatment plan that helped to focus on our teen's strengths and her interests. The facility is AMAZING and everyone from Rob and Jessica to all of the staff really was about treating our person and not stamping a time clock on recovery. Its been almost half a year now out of program and Paradigm is still available to support our teen and our family for those moments when life gets hard. Ditto on the free aftercare program previously mentioned. My Daughter spent 6 weeks at Paradigm. When she went there, she was depressed and seemed hopeless. I researched and found Paradigm ahead of time and read the reviews. I am now leaving mine... They are a fantastic Facility for a Teen who is in a similar place that my Daughter was in. The location is fantastic, with a really nice view of the ocean in a super clean and nice multi-room Mansion that is converted into a Facility. All of the staff there are excellent, especially, Jeremy, who worked with me and my insurance to make it happen before I was able to get her in. Also a huge thank you to Therapists Markus and Erin, who were instrumental and made a huge influence on her. All Three Facilities in Malibu are excellent and I would highly recommend this facility to a parent who thinks there is no hope. My Daughter now is happy and feels there is hope. I am sure this is all due to her stay at Paradigm. read more

Not a therapeutic experience. Our child saw the psychiatrist once in 90 days, learned to cut, became suicidal and had few one on one therapy sessions. They do not take or want to take insurance so 100+ thousand dollars later (my cash) we put our child in a long term care facility where we finally made some progress. Too many kids and too few therapists and doctors. Lots of young "counselors" that basically babysit these teens. read more

My 17 year-old son needed help. Badly. Paradigm Malibu saved his life. The treatment was so incredible for him. They were able to connect with him and brought back the happy, polite, sweet boy that I remember. I didn't think I would be able to afford sending him to Paradigm, but they worked with my insurance and made it affordable. My insurance ended up taking care of a very large majority of what was charged. Would I have sent him anywhere else? Absolutely not. They made our son feel safe and comfortable, and taught him so much about who he is, why he made certain choices, and how to avoid making those choices in the future. They helped him build a foundation in which he can work to improve himself and live a healthy, clean life. They also did such a wonderful job incorporating my wife and I into the program to help us learn techniques to better relate to and build a relationship with our son. At this point, our son is almost two years clean and our relationship with him is worlds better than before his treatment. The staff is better than I could have ever imagined. They were so nice, professional to my daughter and my wife and I. The family and group therapy class were great. I don't know where to begin. Our son suffered with depression and anxiety for many years and started self medicating with pot and Xanax by the age of 17. He was quite resistant to treatment and had two admissions to Paradigm. With our family therapist Dustin, we did as a family start getting to the core of some of the family dynamics that were a large part of his angst. Our son, however, was a very tough nut to crack in opening up about why he was acting out, and the staff suggested we send him to a wilderness program. What I really appreciated about Paradigm at the time was that they were open to finding alternative therapies when what they had to offer was not working. One year later, at the age of 18, our son relapsed and asked to return to Paradigm because he knew he was in trouble and also knew he could get the help he needed there. After 6 weeks, we saw that he actually had learned a lot at the other admissions but was only now ready to use them. He had developed insights and maturity that amazed us. All of the ancillary staff are unendingly supportive. I especially enjoyed the Saturday morning parent groups with Cindy where we were all able to develop a comaraderie that comes from suffering with the same experience of dealing with a troubled teen child. Our remarkable family therapist, Markus, also ran the multifamily group where all parents and clients met. He encouraged us to "dig deeper" and learn to express all the locked away emotions that we all feared and didn't even realize we had. And words cannot even express the gratitude we have towards Steve, our son's personal therapist. Our son left Paradigm a truly changed person, as are we as parents. In the exact words of our son recently, "Paradigm will always be near and dear to my heart". I ditto those sentiments exactly. read more

As a desperate measure to help our 18 year old son who suffered with severe depression and anger issues we contacted Paradigm after it was recommended by a former client who claimed they saved his life. We had tried medication, therapy, psychiatry and no one could get through to him and meds didn't work. We were exhausted living with an abusive and mean son who verbally tormented everyone in the house. We turned to Paradigm because there's nothing like it in NY. They were compassionate, attentive and truly committed to helping our son feel better about life. They worked with him night and day...and honestly, we had doubts. But what an amazing transformation! They worked with the family and our son and today he is home and the best he's ever been! He smiles, communicates, and keeps to the contract we agreed upon before he left treatment. We literally traveled the world to place our daughter at Paradigm and it was worth it! Our (Dutch) family lives in the Netherlands. When our 15 year old daughter was really struggling with a major depression we couldn't find the right support in our country. After extensive research we choose Paradigm Malibu for her treatment. After six weeks she had made major progress and we returned to the Netherlands. She resumed school and picked up her life. However due to waiting lists for mental care in our country she had no follow up therapy and she relapsed. She once more went to Paradigm, and once again they got her back on her feet. The team is amazing, not only working with the teens but also with the other family members. The family sessions have been life changing for all of us. The team helped us find a therapeutic boarding school in the US, where our daughter will graduate spring 2018. We are now even looking at colleges in the US. We are still in regular contact with the Paradigm team, who are all amazing and warm people. Not just the therapists, everyone from the admissions director to the teachers to the chefs that prepare the (fantastic) meals were truly committed to helping the teens! read more

Paradygm has excellent therapists and the location is breath-taking. Yet, it has been our observation that the program is too short, that most of the kids that attended with our daughter were "extended" to stay beyond the 30 days and that when they go home they re-lapse so they enter longer term facilities as follow-up. Prior to selecting Paradigm, we were advised that teenagers need more than 30 days to deal with anxiety or depression and I would imagine the same hold true for drug/alcohol addition; we ignored this advice after talking to the paradigm staff. While the therapy is intense, habits and issues are not created in 30 days and I imagine few kids are completely successful after these 30 days. This residential facility is expensive; be skeptical of the "sell" that this is a 30 day program...it is most likely that your child will go to another treatment facility that is longer in duration and you may want to consider starting with a longer term facility first- the length of the treatment does matter. Also be aware that the facility is extremely luxurious: Unless you live in Malibu in a mansion with a french Chef, your kids will feel very entitled. Our daughter is in a longer term facility now and making significant progress. We contacted Paradigm seeking help for our daughter who was struggling with depression and severe anxiety. We left with the realization that it wasn't just our daughter that needed help; our family unit equally needed help. Her mental health issues and struggles were definitely real and we urgently needed to get the help. I agree with the other reviews. The staff is amazing and they genuinely care about their clients and their families. The staff treats the disorders but they also work hard to help the family unit improve their communication and reconnect. In my opinion this is the key to their success. Whenever we contacted any of the staff with concerns or questions, they always listened to us and had very good dialogues with us about our daughter's treatment. They respected bother her confidentiality and ours which is important. They treated our entire family with respect - they truly care about treating the disorders and also healing the family. I recommend for families to attend the Family Saturdays if possible. The groups on Saturdays were key to the treatment of our daughter and the healing of our family. They were both educational and provided us with much needed self awareness. It's also important to realize residential treatment is NOT some place you send your child to "get fixed". It is a family investment of both finances and time. For our family, mental health issues like anxiety, OCD, etc. will always be present. Paradigm has given us tools to reduce stress and properly cope with these disorders in a health manner. These coping skills have greatly reduced my daughter's symptoms. She was in treatment at Paradigm for 60 days. Paradigm recommended additional outpatient treatment and we have stuck to the plan. Our daughter has made immense progress and is in a much happier place. She is making great strides and works hard to continue to develop her coping skills. She is more confident and is able to participate in life a lot more. We, as a family, continue to work hard too. Now we have no doubts that our daughter will be able to reach her personal goals; whereas before, we struggled to keep her alive. Treatment was a family commitment. Our family committed to working hard and we are, overall, all in a much better emotional place. Paradigm has been a blessing to our family. read more
