I went to Paradise Garage twice, once because I needed oil badly for my car (it burns oil occasionally, necessitating refills) and another time for an inspection. When I went for the oil, they happily gave it to me AT COST and without delay, leaving me stunned at their incredible generosity. I made sure to give my inspection business to them as well, and they were quick and efficient about it. In the past, I would usually go to Merchant's knowing I would be price-gouged and given unnecessary service. I needed a state inspection, and I needed it fast. I called many places in Richmond that had a glowing reviews for oil changes in state inspections, but came across Paradise garage. I was surprised when I called and they notified that the wait would not be long,l, although I remained skeptical. I will admit that it is a little tricky navigating inside the garage but once you find it there are plenty of parking spots. I was greeted by the receptionist who was extremely kind and welcoming. I kid you not, I only waited for 20 minutes and my car was completely inspected. I am new to the area and a friend highly recommended Paradise Garage. I needed an inspection and had to book an appointment 3 different times because of life. They were very gracious and I finally just left the car there. My car passed inspection without any issues, so they didn't try to tell me my cloudy headlights needed to be replaced, as has happened before when mechanics are looking for that extra money on unnecessary items. They also reattached a couple of mouldings that had come off for free. And I can swear they wiped down the dash and doors. A friend of mine recommended this shop to me, but I unfortunately did not have a good experience. My key has tape on it to keep it from falling apart. The tape on my key has been there for years and the only way for it to fall apart is if someone had purposely removed it. So with that being said I had left the key at this shop and after I had picked up my key it was sticky. When you remove tape it leaves an old adhesive residue so it is very obvious that it was purposely tampered with. After noticing the tape being tampered with I immediately confronted the person who I gave my key to and her name is Liv. This is a big deal because if my chip and battery do not work then it will cost me my car. I've had great experiences at other garages, but not this one. This place is still my number one place for repairs. They are quick, INCREDIBLY HONEST, fair, SO SKILLED, ridiculously knowledgeable, and very communicative. They saved me from almost junking my car earlier this year,after I mistakenly brought it to a different shop who told me my car was junked and I should scrap it. Almost a year later, my car is still driving like a dream and it only cost me about 500$ to get it safely on the road. Which is much less than a whole new car. They are currently doing more work on it and Greg stuck by his estimate for a parts replacement he gave me almost 10 months ago. I have learned my lesson and I will never go anywhere else again. THEY BROKE MY WINDSHIELD, GASLIGHTED ME AND REFUSED TO COVER THE REPAIRS. have been going to Paradise Garage for 3 years now and have always trusted their service and have even recommended them to two of my friends. A huge anxiety many young women face is taking their car to the mechanic and having them try to swindle them into paying for unnecessary repairs and that has never been my experience here. I went to take my car to get my inspection done and an oil change, came back and there was a large crack in the center of my windshield. The tech there claimed it was "already there" EVEN THOUGH I took a picture of my vehicle before I left and there was no visible/sign of a crack. The tech told me he "felt bad for me" and to get a quote and the owner would take care of the repairs. I took time out of my day to get a quote just for them to tell me the crack was already there and it wasn't the shops responsibility. Their first excuse was that it got hit by a rock while parked in their lot, they then said there was a crack already and while raising the car to get my oil changed the crack expanded. I asked the tech MULTIPLE TIMES how my vehicle would have passed inspection if there was a large crack in my windshield and he again said "I wanted to be nice and I felt bad for you" just to follow up and say that I had a year to get my windshield fixed so I wouldn't fail my next inspection. Now make this make sense....if I had a photo of my windshield with 0 cracks prior to the inspection but minor chips on the opposite side of the windshield, then suddenly I have a large crack in the center how did I even initially pass? If the same tech told me I would need to get it fixed by next year so I wouldn't fail? So they obviously know that there was no crack when they did my inspection or else I would fail. So now I am out between $5-700 for a crack that wasn't there until I took my car for standard maintenance. How fun! What an amazing shop that values their loyal customers and works with integrity and honesty. read more

I took my car in for inspection. They called me to let me know my vehicle was ready. I went to the counter and the receptionist said OK you can insert your card without telling me the amount. She said OK you're good to go and then I replied where are my keys. There were several invoices laying in front of me so I had to find my invoice along with my keys. As I was leaving the building I noticed that I had been charged for service I was unaware of. The owner replied it would cost more to call you then to replace the bulbs. Not good business practice. There was no warning light in my car to suggest bulbs were out. My granddaughter went to paradise garage for an inspection and was told that she had a bulb out, she called me to let me know what she was told, and I ask her to ask the mechanic which bulb was out, and I heard him say that he didn't know, so how can you tell her that a bulb was out? This is the third time I've gone into this place of business and have been treated poorly and unprofessionally by the people working reception. I have always been friendly and courteous, but I have only been met with disdain and patronizing tones by the workers here. I can't speak for all of the employees or the mechanics; but the front desk people need to do some serious work on their people skills. Everyone has their off days, but it seems as though every day is an off day with them; because I am constantly met with condescending tones and unwarranted rudeness. Easy to schedule, good service, honest folks, quick turnaround. I came for a synthetic oil change and annual inspection. When I called to make my appointment, they talked a good while with me on the phone to establish a quote (had to make sure I could afford it). I was 30min late to my appointment, but the mechanics at the desk were accommodating, saying it was totally fine. Took a little over 1.5hrs, and all I had to do was sit in a nearby Carytown/Fan coffeeshop (there are several, and highly recommended) and wait for the phone call to tell me my car was ready. They even had couches in the reception area in case you wanted to wait there (or are just too lazy to move without your car). I felt confident, as other Yelpers did, that the mechanics would only charge me the amount they needed to and again at an extremely fair price without all that "fluff". I'd highly recommend this crew for any and everyone. Definitely a go-to mechanics shop. read more

Finding a reputable mechanic is intimidating -- especially for a single girl who knows nothing about cars. As an out-of-towner, it was tempting to resort to the bigger chains, but it's nice to support honest small businesses like Paradise Garage. I learned about Paradise Garage through positive word-of-mouth and Google reviews. The location is in the heart of the Fan and only 1.5 miles from downtown. The shop has a bright yellow brick mural that you can't miss and its parking lot is small, but it's a healthy sign of business when finding a parking spot is difficult. I personally have a Honda, but I have seen a variety of domestic/import cars in their shop before. The service is always priced reasonably and Greg is honest. To help you pass VA state inspection without breaking a bank, he will tell you how to get the best deal and whether certain repairs can wait. His desk is messy, but I've never felt like my car has been mishandled at all. Business hours are M-F, 9-5pm which can be inconvenient but I trusted Paradise Garage enough to drop off my spare car keys in advance and to pick up my car later. Lunch hour is the most convenient time to get work done at Paradise Garage, but call in advance to see if they're able to make it. Over the year, I've gotten plenty of work done - state inspection, oil change, brakes, tune-ups, etc. Maintaining my car was easy in Richmond! And if I was paranoid about a strange sound with my car, Greg and his team were always willing to check out the issue. read more

I've been to Paradise Garage three times--once to borrow a gas can, once to get a wheel bearing on my Ford Focus replaced, and once to get my Focus's motor mount replaced--and I have come to completely trust Greg and the guys over there. Paradise Garage was actually recommended to me by a coworker who was an old college roommate of Greg's. I trust my coworker completely, and he trusts Greg completely, so there's the start of a beautiful relationship right there. I have only two issues with Paradise Garage. The first is that I was underquoted on a job once--the motor mount--but after I pointed this out to Greg, he bent over backwards to make sure that I paid only what was quoted to me, regardless what it actually cost him to do the job (which was about $30 more). He told me, "I'd rather give you the work for free than have one disgruntled customer." So this first issue was resolved quickly and in a way that makes me trust them even more. Second issue is their waiting room. It's filled with a ping pong table, pool table, foosball, table hockey, and a collection of arcade games. And that's awesome! But... the tables are all covered with papers and the arcade games are unplugged. Come on! Uncover those tables and turn on those games! What a tease. As you can see, I don't really have any issues with the place. It's a good shop, the people are nice, friendly, and easy to talk to, and it's a local business, so the money you spend there stays in Richmond. Next time my motor explodes or my fender drops off or I feel like gazing hopelessly at some vintage arcade games, I'm headed over to Paradise Garage. read more

This place is awesome, and I don't think I can't express how good that feels to find a mechanic shop like this. The first time I showed up the mechanic, Greg, told me that there wasn't a problem. I said 'WHAT? You mean there's not $5,000 worth of work that you found on top of what was wrong?' He reassured me that I just had some shitty brake pads and I could upgrade if I wanted. When a problem really did arise, he was all over it. I've taken everything from my Sebring and Jeep to my 1983 Volkswagen Vanagon. They do it all, and do a really good job. I needed a garage that was close enough to my job downtown that I could drop off my car to get inspected and ride my bike to work. They were close enough and they were able to accommodate me on the day my inspection expired. I always wait til after the last minute. I've waited months to do it before, but I really don't have any extra money for a ticket so it was a priority this time. I showed up a little later than I would have liked and was worried that intake might take longer than I had time for, but nope, dropped the key off and left within about 2 minutes. I sped off to work and got there around the same time I always do. They called me just 2 hours later to tell me it was done. And that they had gone ahead and replaced the tag light that was out. The total for the inspection and the light replacement was less than $30, very reasonable and what I was hoping to pay. I rode my bike back there at lunch and picking up my car was a breeze. I got out just as fast as I had gotten in. No guilt tripping about a bunch of repairs they thought I needed. I keep my car well maintained so I know what it needs and what it doesn't, and it irritates me when a garage wastes my time about something it's not even close to being due for. It took me 25 minutes to ride my bike there and I appreciated still having enough time on my lunch break to grab a sandwich to go at Olio a couple blocks away. The kicker was what I noticed later - driving out in the dim of the parking garage later that day leaving work, I noticed that someone had pinched a wire or replaced a fuse or something to get the backlight on my speedometer back on (it's been out for ages). I also brought it in at a time when the washer fluid was empty, so after noticing this little touch, I thought "I bet they topped off all my fluids too." I tried the washer fluid and lo-and-behold, washer fluid burst forth. I'd bet money that they topped off my oil too. BRAVO Paradise. read more

Greg and the guys over at Paradise Garage are probably some of the most honest and personable folks you could ever run into in the auto repair industry. I have a 1997 VW Golf that's in various stages of disrepair. For the third time in 5 years, I had to get it taken in to get my water pump replaced, which is a huge pain of a job for this model of car. I'm used to having to pay $800 just for that one repair. On top of that, I had belts that needed replacing, a bad thermostat, and a few cracked hoses. Talked to Greg for a bit, he quoted me an estimate that was well below what I was used to paying, and he stuck by that estimate. No pressure kind of place, and the guys will fix what needs to be fixed to get you safely and quickly back on the road again. The only reason I docked a star was because it took a little over a week to hear back about the status of my car, but I'm going to assume that there was a glut of jobs, since it was a holiday weekend at the end of the month. Their prices are very reasonable and they actually have referred me to specialists numerous times when they were unable to give me the best price. Rip Off. I got an inspection and oil change for my 4Cylinder Honda done here to test out if they would be my new mechanics and they charged me over $100 for the oil change alone... they use off brand cheap oil and charges DOUBLE what Honda would charge. They said the car just needed bushings so i took it to another shop for a second opinion and was able to replace new control arms for over $100 LESS than what a single bushing would've cost with Paradise Garage. They are a bunch of rip offs and i don't feel comfortable coming back here. read more

I park by a wall in my apartment's garage and though I try to be careful, my hand slipped a few days ago while backing out and my right rear view mirror got bumped against the wall and popped out. Thankfully nothing broke, but I tried my best to pop it back in and just couldn't do it. I called paradise, heard they were wonderful, and asked if I could get a quote. I told Greg that I had popped my mirror out but that nothing seemed to be broken. He told me to just drop by and he'd pop it back in for me! I finally got around to it today and sure enough, after several attempts and some finessing, he got it back in and working, no charge! Just a friendly "come back and see us". If I ever have car trouble in the future, you bet paradise will be the first place I go. They seem to run an honest business and are genuinely nice people, not looking to squeeze money out of you anyway they can. This kind of service is a rare gem these days. Simply put, this place is amazing! I have been going here for a few years now for various things, but mostly state inspections and a valve cover gasket leak issue I had. They do not overcharge you like most garages do. Went in for my state inspection the other day as well as an oil change and wiper blade replacements. They fixed a bulb that was out that cost $10, luckily for me so I didn't get pulled over not knowing it was out! But other than that, no extra charges. Last year I got it inspected right after I had my windshield replaced because I knew it wouldn't pass inspection with the old one. No extra charges. The year before that I put a set of used tires on my car beforehand because I was worried about them not passing. Took it in and you guessed it, no extra charges! I'm not saying if there isn't something wrong they won't fix it and charge you, I'm just saying that in the last 3 years the most unexpected thing I was charged for was 1 $10 light bulb that was legit out anyways. I took it in another time around 6 months ago asking about a radiator problem, and they noticed the valve cover gasket was leaking (again). Since they had replaced it, it was still under their warranty and they took care of it for me! (by the way, the fact that they had to re-do the gasket says nothing bad about them, this is a known issue in my Honda's year and I've replaced it 4 times the 4 years I've owned it....). These guys are awesome, it's hard to find a good mechanic but I really feel like after a few years I can safely say these guys are mine! Thank you for taking such good care of my car! read more

On the most recent visit, which I made an appointment for routine stuff (oil change, state inspection, tire rotation), I called at almost 5pm to see if my car was ready and they indicated they just started working on it. When I dropped it off at 8:30am I said I needed at 5pm but b/c it wasn't ready I ended up needing a ride home and then going to get my car the next morning. Such a pain! I had hit a curb with my car, going fast- and immediately noticed a marked change in the steering and the feel of the car- I absolutely knew that with a mishap like that, it's not a question of "is the car damaged" but rather "how badly is the car damaged?" So because of all the good reviews I decided to try Paradise- I'm still on a seemingly endless search for a good mechanic. I explained what happened, dropped the car and left. They have my car the entire morning, and a little after lunch hour I get a call from them saying that there's nothing wrong with the car. They said it had some body damage underneath- they were very vague about that and no one bothered explaining anything or talking to me about it despite me asking- and that I needed to get it aligned. That's it. I tried telling them the car made a squeaking noise now when I turned the wheel, and was driving completely different, but that was that. They were not interested in discussing it, come and get my car. Ok. So I went to pick the car up, and not only had they had my car most of the day to tell me nothing is wrong with it, when clearly, there is, but I had a nearly $50 to pay for their insight on this. Now I have to find some other mechanic and I'm almost $50 in the hole. Thanks guys. You know, if you're going to tell me nothing is wrong, at least spend maybe 2-5 minutes explaining to me what you DID actually do, what you looked at and observed, what could be wrong in this situation. I don't know because no one cared enough to talk to me. Did you drive it? Did you put it on the lift? What parts did you check? Where was the "body damage" and what effect could this have on the car? Isn't my $50 worth that? So what really struck me about this whole experience, is that these guys simply did not care about me, my car, my car's problem. Not a single f@ck given. I have seldom been made to feel so small and insignificant. I'm sure their friends get their cars worked on here, love them, post great reviews. If anyone had bothered to talk to me at all they would have found they probably know a lot of the same folks I do- one of my bands played a show at this place a few years back. So, no I don't expect the rockstar red carpet, but it doesn't feel good to be treated like you barely exist either. But I guess if you're getting $50 for nothing you don't need to worry about your business sense. Never again. read more

Paradise Garage is really the best. I started going here many, many years ago, after my husband (then-boyfriend) recommended them. They are really fair with their prices, and they are absolutely honest. One time I asked them to check out a weird noise, and they reported back that it was just rust on my brakes and not a safety issue (i.e., not something that I'd need to pay to have them fix).
