I had been researching ebikes online and one of the makers listed Paragon as a dealer. We visited the shop and met Ray. He took so much time explaining features, different brands, making recommendations, etc. He was not interested in making a high dollar sale, but instead was interested in showing us something that would meet our needs. We purchased 2 bikes, with one of them needing to be ordered. He said it would be in the following week. The next day he called to say the bike we ordered wouldn't be in for a month but he had another one he'd like us to see. This bike was a few hundred dollars more but he gave it to us for the price of the other bike. With both bikes purchased he asked to bring it in for adjustments in the next month. I love my nightly bike ride but I started to notice a change in my bikes performance. I didn't not purchase my bike from Paragon, however, it is the closest shop to my home, and they had performed previous services, like tube and tire replacements, etc. However, on this occasions, I brought my bike in with a specific issue; where it feels like it seizes while peddling, thereby drastically reducing my speed and ability to pedal easily. It never even crossed their threshold before a man, I am assuming was an owner, deemed my bike unrepairable. He said he would happily check certain things, and of course charge me. Yet, he thought that it would be a better idea to upgrade my bike to a $500-$600+/- hybrid model. While, I can't disagree with him, my cycling is an important part of my daily routine. Yet, not all of us can afford to make that decision on the spot. While I appreciate his candidness, it was disheartening to hear I bought a lemon to start with, and with zero hope to get in a good working order. I still believe, this place offers good service, at a reasonable cost. They also sell bikes at an average price point. They do have knowledge of cycling and can pair you with the bike that fits your needs. read more

So I had a flat fixed a few months ago. I was impressed with the customer service at the time as I mentioned in my first review. Time has changed that. The tire went flat 3 times since then. I took it to another bike shop and found out it was not the reinforced tube I had requested and was charged for. I am disappointed that they didn't install the tube I asked for, but upset that they didn't tell me about it. The fact that I was charged for reinforced tube was wrong. read more

I brought in a broken rear triangle for them to help me order a replacement from Diamondback. When the new one came in they offered to throw out the old one for me if I wanted & I said sure. That night I realized I had left a piece of the rear derailer on the frame piece I told them to toss. I called the next morning to see if they had tossed it in their dumpster yet, & after a few minutes they called me back. They had gone DUMPSTER DIVING through their trash to find me the piece I had lost...with out me even asking! I will be going back to them for all my bike needs. Quite possibly the rudest bike shop in Mesa. This review is not the result of just one visit, but more than one visit in person and over the phone. I've honestly tried to smile, be pleasant, and hope that I get a different response but it never makes a bit of difference. It's always the same rude, condescending tone. There are plenty of other bike shops in the valley where when you walk in you get a nice smile and greeting and they are happy to see you interested in their business and spend your money. I recommend that you move on, which is what they seem to prefer. read more

I've had work done by the guys at Paragon on two separate occasions. The first being this instance where I wanted to have a freehub from an older 10-speed road bike replaced with a newer 7-speed freehub; I left my number and bicycle with them, and the next day I received a phone call saying they didn't have the tool for the older freewheel (The freewheel in question turned out to be a very, very old Shimano unit that Park Tool doesn't even manufacture a tool for), and gave me some options; I suggested using a spare, somewhat haggard wheel I happened to have on me, dropped it off, and the next day, I had a running 14-speed bike. The wheel was completely in true, and dished to accommodate the 7-speed freehub. The second time was a bit more interesting. As I'm all over the valley, I had a modern bottom bracket installed on my bicycle at another shop, and put some new cranks on it. On it's maiden ride with a new bottom bracket and crankset, the non-drive crank arm fell off. Being in Mesa at the time, I walked the bike over to Paragon (much to the dismay of my friends who I was riding with), Ray looked at it and immediately knew what was wrong and threw the bike on the repair stand and fixed the problem: the other shop put some spacers onto the bottom bracket in a fashion intended for mountain bikes, even though it was a road bike. He removed the offending spacers, installed the crank, and we were off. Even in very usual or exigent circumstances, the guys at Paragon have done nothing but splendid work for me, and their work costs always end up being cheaper than their initial quotes. I had a bike that I wanted some parts changed on it. I brought in the bike and provided all the parts and cables to install a new stem, handlebars, pedals, and new cables. When I picked up the bike the new parts were installed but my original pedals, grips, and rack piece I were told were "missing"and were not returned to me when I picked up the bike. Not only that I was up charged for cables (for which I provided) and other charges that were inaccurate. I spoke with Ray about my concerns and he ordered me replacement pedals and grips that went "missing" minus the rack piece which they still haven't found. He also refunded me the $35 dollar upcharge and admitted his mistake. In the end, Ray made up for his mistakes and apologized, but I am not sure I would trust this shop with another job on my bike. read more

Even as bike shops go, this place is terrible. I wanted to fix an old bike for my girlfriend. They said they could turn it around in one week... one week became two and a half weeks. Didn't bother contacting me. When I got the bike back, it was still dirty, they failed to replace the breaks, cables, and cable housings. Shotty work, when I tested the breaks and the gears, they lost all tension because screws were not tightened. I thought I could take the easy route and not rebuild the bike myself.. now I'm out money and I have a bigger project than before. Thanks Paragon! read more

I was doing a quick search to look up the phone number as I had a quick question for Ray and was surprised by all of these reviews. I've been taking my family's bikes here for repairs for years. While I am sorry to say that the service isn't quite as good when it is from Jim I can say that the service provided by Ray, the owner, is excellent! I'd had bad experiences at other places with unfriendly service and poor quality repairs (Mike's Bikes for example) but at Paragon I trust Ray 100% to always be honest and he never over charges me. In fact there's been a time or two when it was a matter of tightening up something with the brakes or the kickstand on one bike and he didn't even charge me. Any repairs, even those requiring parts, have held up over time. I would never take our bikes anywhere else. read more

Great experience! Exceptional customer service! I needed to ship a bike out asap. Being quoted an insane amount at UPS, I decided to roll the bike into their shop to see what could be done. Despite being told it may take an extra day or two to take care of based on their current work load I was given a call 2 hours later at best letting me know it was all packaged up and was to be sent off that day. Ended up paying half what UPS was charging me and they took care of all the boxing and packaging. They obviously care about and value their customers. read more

I recently went riding my bike around the area I got a flat. I usually would change them my self. It was a emergency. I decided to go in to Change the flat. The sir didn't seem in a helping mood and I asked him if he could service my flat and he said what like a tube replacement. I said yeah and he said well I have serval bike in front of you. Changing a tube is a quick Change I said. He said I promise these bikes in order not at all wanting to help me out. I was in a emergency I asked if I could buy a tube and he replied yes I also asked for a tool he refused saying I mad policy that no one can barrow tools.He refused to work with me at all. This shop meets the definition of a "excellent local bike shop". I have been going here for a number of years and spent a good deal of money, and I have always been satisfied. The owner Ray is very knowledgeable and friendly. The work done has always been top-notch. Somehow I broke the frame on my Marin bike that I purchased here, and Ray had it replaced on warranty without any issues. I first called this place and asked for pricing on a front wheel on a Schwinn and was told $50 bucks. I said ok. I go to the store and walk my bike in and am greeted by a tattooed up guy that was arrogant. I told him my bike was damaged and needed a new front wheel and the rear wheel needed to be "trued". He tells me it's, $55 for the front wheel not the $50 I was quoted on the phone. Then I wanted him to look over the bike to see if there were any other issues so I would know. I had to insist as he didn't seem to really want to do it. He looked it over and said, yeah, $55 for the front wheel, $10 to true the rear, plus tax. I said, cool do it. That was on a Friday and he said he would have the wheel in on Monday and have it fixed no later than Tuesday and he would call me on Tuesday when it was done. Tuesday comes and no call, Wednesday comes and no call, thurs and no call, so I called them and asked. He said, "oh, I'm still waiting on the rim". Then I get a call late Thursday saying the bike is done... Whatever. So, I go to the shop and the guy tells me it's $87 instead of $65-$70 quoted. He claimed, oh, well we got you a better rim (which I never asked for) and, oh, the rear rim needed more "truing" than I thought" even though I made him look at the bike to begin with so he would know what the problems were. Then, I bring the bike home and after being over charged the bars are miss-aligned from the front wheel. I mean this shop did the absolute minimum and charged me more for it. That is horrible customer service. It stinks of greed and only wanting your money. I realize this is a fairly insignificant amount of money but I don't being gouged by disingenuous people! It was an unfriendly bad vibe environment in this store and I was outright overcharged. STAY AWAY! I WOULD NOT RECOMEND! read more

Had a link put in my chain and new cassette put on as I was leaving back rim fell off because he didn't tighten it bent the rotor on my back rim and my hydraulic brake lever and now my rim is bent. Great quality products but double check work he trying to blame me saying I tighten it to tight. He was the one that put my rim on. Not impressed go somewhere else read more

My bike had been left outside in the elements for over a year. I took it to Paragon and asked them to do whatever needed to be done to get ready for use again. What I got back was almost a brand new shiny bike and I felt the price was not only reasonable but was lower than I expected to pay. Unfortunately, that bike was later stolen but I am now excited to go back to Paragon to purchase a new one. I was taking a trip to San Diego and brought my bike in to get the brakes working. They replaced the cables, some linear brake gismo, and lubricated the chain for $42. The bike was loaded into my van and I went on my trip. I got on my bike with the rest of our group and off we went. The first time I hit my brakes it sounded like I was killing a baby seal. The brakes kept grabbing and sticking and I had to stop and pry them away from the rims. I ended up parking my bike because I did not feel safe trying to come to a stop and there are a lot of hills in San Diego. Upon my return to Mesa, I dropped the bike off to get the brakes adjusted. I picked it up the next day and they said, "That will be $27. We had to put all new brake pads on it. They were all dry rotted and that is why they squealed and didn't work." I asked why in the world would you send me to California without changing them? He said it was because we only told him it needed new cables and they didn't test it after installing them. I said, "You have got to be kidding me! I hauled my bike all the way to CA, wasn't able to ride it because you didn't check to make sure the repair was working, and I have now been to your store two times and you want another $27?" He just shrugged and gave me an "oh well" look. I guess they would rather make $27 and lose a customer than to make it right. I will never shop at this store again. read more
