Trying to find someone at the nursing station was next to impossible and when we would find someone it would take 15 -20 minutes for them to come. My mom had a horrific bruised face from a fall, no one could tell me what happened. It was so bad hospice sent people out more frequently because they felt she was no getting sufficient care. I voiced my displeasure, but it fell on deaf ears. I removed mom from there and brought her home.

The staff at Mari got my mom to a stable and calm place instead of chaos and hospitalizations every few months like she had with other places. Her primary Dr also visited (this was a huge plus for us), and she has been treated by Dr. Sky (psych) and Dr. Night (wound care). At previous places Phych meds were added to fix behaviors and that caused chaos and more hospitalizations. It's very hard to know the best place to trust for your loved one. No place is perfect. Our family has been happy with the service and level of care, plus the activities, ease of using their private dining rooms for our family's visits, and the grand celebrations they host for residents and families during holidays. I never thought I would be reviewing nursing homes, or giving 5 stars, but their staff had earned it. Other facilities she has been at (that I did not/will not review) Quarters of Des Peres, Delmar West on 40, West Chester House, Mason Point/Lutheran senior services. The only downside is they do not have Medicaid beds at Mari.

The staff as I have experienced them, have all been polite and kind to my mother, and yes, I ask her every time I see her. Yes, she can't wait to go home, and I wouldn't have that any other way. Why four stars and not 5? The food (lunch and dinner) is a bit unimpressive, and I can certainly see how someone there for more than a couple of weeks would consider that an issue. As for our family no two-day period goes by where one of us is not vising her, so we just remember to bring her a little dietarily appropriate treat, and she is good to go.

You think it would be nice since it is in a good area and nice enough facility but do not be fooled!

I contacted Brightstar on a Saturday to inquire about 24-hour care for my stepfather who was already receiving hospice care but my mother could no longer take care of him alone. The lady I spoke with on the phone said she would have the owner call me back to schedule a time where she could come talk with me and my mother. In the meantime I left to tour the de Greeff Hospice house as another alternative. I had no longer arrived at de Greeff (30 minutes away) when I got a call from the owner of Brightstar, Lori, who said she was at my house. So much for scheduling an appointment. I immediately apologized to the kind lady at de Greef and hurried back home to meet with Lori. Lori was very friendly. I was quickly annoyed though because we were confident we wanted 24-hour care and she kept referring to labor laws governing what she could provide. As far as I was concerned, the labor laws were her concern, not mine. We just wanted 24-hour care for my stepfather. We talked about the rates which would be a concern if this care continued for more than a month. She led both my mother and I to believe that shifts were the best option at $13/hour because it would be cheaper and she had "labor laws" to contend with for a live-in caregiver. We told her that we definitely were interested in her services beginning in 6 days. Brightstar sent a nurse to evaluate my stepfather in the hospital and determined he was going to be a combative patient (which cancer had moved to his brain so not surprised there). Lori called me to tell me that because he was combative, she would have to run shifts for her caregivers as opposed to livein which would run at a higher rate of $21.50/hour as opposed to $13.00/hour for the livein. This was exactly the opposite of what she lead my mother and I to believe when she met with us. She assured me that we misunderstood. I bowed to her interpretation and we still intended on using them at least for a few days, although at this point we began to actively seek alternative caregiver services. As fate would have it, my mother passed away unexpectedly on the very day that my stepfather was to return from the hospital and begin his 24-hour care. I do not live in St. Louis, and was receiving numeorus calls from the St. Louis County Police and my mothers neighbors who found her. This all happened around 5:00pm. Needles to say my brothers and I were in shock. At 8:30pm, 30 minutes after our scheduled time to have the caregiver arrive for my stepfather, Lori calls me to ask where my mother and stepfather were? She must have just missed the police and ambulance carrying my mother away. In all the confusion, I had forgotten to call Lori to cancel the caregiver. When I told her what happened she sounded shocked, gave her condolences, and informed me that we would be charged for "cancelled shift with no notice". And sure enough, she direct debited $86 for 4 hours from the checking account because I didn't call her. These are the facts. Draw your own conclusions.

The ER was quick to respond and fast acting. That's about where the good ends and the bad begins. They missed meals while admitted, they almost let him bleed out and had to call a code team to respond. He is on blood thinners but was treated the entirely wrong way! I don't want to freak people out so I'm not posting pictures. They were doing the exact opposite of what everything on the Internet said to do and a DR even admitted they were doing it wrong. Then even after this was finished and we requested ENT to look at him he was released to rehab where he had another nose bleed even worse and they had to put a rhino rocket in for 72 hours. No pain meds were given until requested and the 12 hours later he had only gotten one dose. Mind you I was there during 90 percent of this and he is for all intents and purposes non verbal. The nurse felt bad and was very attentive after she didn't realize he hadn't gotten any pain or anxiety medicine for having an almost 3 inch ballon in his nasal passage. Like WTF. I'm so pissed I can't imagine if he had no one to advocate for him what would they have done to him. A year ago I would have been in jail after the first part of this experience for a long time. This is disgraceful. I forgot to mention. The first morning I came in his entire bed was soaked in urine sheets and all and I have photo evidence of all of this. It is atrocious and negligent! I have even tried contacting several people in the hospital and told I would be contacted and haven't heard back and I told them hey had 48 hours before I began my journey to exposing them. 5 days and many other things to report we are going to the state health and senior services after this and we will not stop. I'm one thing and that is tenacious and I will get you on the news and hopefully have our day in court with you Mercy! Good luck! So much more to say but seriously try and keep your family out of everything but the ER and know what your family member needs and don't leave them alone there it will be bad if you do.
