Gado Gado was SUCH a flavorful experience. Everything we tried packed a punch, and the whole meal felt exciting from start to finish. We opted to order à la carte instead of doing the rice table, and honestly, there were so many standouts. We started with the Krupuk Chips with Peanut Sauce. The chips themselves could have used a tad more flavor, but they were perfectly crunchy -- and that peanut sauce WAS THE STAR. Rich, savory, addictive... seriously finger-licking good. The Roti Canai was another favorite. Flaky, delicious bread paired with a blistered tomato curry that completely caught me off guard in the best way. I had no idea what to expect, but WOW. The curry was punchy, coconutty, aromatic, and just packed with flavor. So good. The Charcoal Grilled Chicken Satay was such a standout dish. Beautifully smoky, flavorful, and exactly the kind of dish you keep going back for. We also tried the Chinese Sausage & Shrimp Siu Mai, which was juicy, savory, and absolutely loaded with flavor. And then the Sumatran Style Beef Rendang -- tender, soft, and beautifully flavorful. It came with clove rice that was also WOW, and the green mango sambal brought this bright, tangy element that balanced the richness of the dish perfectly. Service was prompt and friendly, and the ambiance was vibrant, lively, and fun. Overall, Gado Gado delivered BIG on flavor. Here is the thing about fusion food, looking at it on paper, it doesn't feel all that appealing. However, the masters in the kitchen that create the flavors for mixing some of the most interesting ingredients are geniuses. Gado Gado has put together a formula for creating Southeast Asian fusion that's so incredibly unique that it's hard to put words to describe it. Located in a strip mall in a non-descript portion of the Hollywood neighborhood, the restaurant really has a unique appeal about it. It has the heart of Portland beating through it, and at the same time, the plates they are pumping out are some of the most unique food one can find on the East Coast or West Coast. They offer a tasting menu and a la carte options. Just like their sister restaurants, they have a unique range of cocktails available, and an assortment of beers and wines. What really struck me about the restaurant was less about the food, more about the service. The service was so kind. I mean, really kind. The server we had, Emily, was one of the nicest people I've ever interacted with in table service. To be honest, that's more than enough to get me to go back. Had a 12/10 fantastic delicious meal here with friends when visiting the city of vacation. The staff was incredibly helpful, attentive, and friendly. The vibe of the restaurant was a lot more laid back/chill than I expected, and the lights were nicely dimmed, but it wasn't dark. My friends and I got the Roti, Scallop Crudo, Clove Rice, Siu Mai, Beef Rendang, and the Chicken Satay. The Roti, Siu Mai, and Beef Rendang were my favorites. The Roti was delicious and comforting, and had flaky salt! The Siu Mai was so juicy and had tons of flavor. The Beef Rendang came with shrimp crackers which were such a funky fun treat, and the meat was crazy tender. The Scallop Crudo was a bit funky for me, but we didn't leave any on the plate. Fantastic flavorful and creative food. Instead of the rice table, as a group of 6, we decided to order a la carte to try as much of the menu as possible. We ended up ordering all savory dishes except the Ikan Woku and had an absolute feast. Overall the sauces were varied and very flavorful. The shrimp chips came with a complex peanut sauce and the sambal flight were interesting as well. The blistered tomato curry with the roti was surprising and a good take on a dipping sauce. The chicken satay was super good - one of us described it as best chicken skewers ever. They were crisp with a deep smokey flavor. Bakwan Sayur was interesting (like fried "frites" of cabbage and papaya), we've never really had anything like it. The mint chutney was great and the curry leaf added an interesting twist. We did miss the tang that comes from salad style green papaya though. The Chinese sausage and shrimp siu mai were solid but felt a little out of place in the rest of the menu. Definitely rich, maybe one of the more skippable dishes. The smoked chicken lawar was a great "salad". Much denser than most salads and packed with flavor, particularly from the shrimp paste and things like the candied hazelnuts. The scallops in the crudo were fantastic - sweet and delicate - and we liked most of the flavors but it came off a little overly sweet. Our final small plate was the grilled shrimp. The XO and lemon were great, we were just not sure about the fried steam bun. We had three mains, and again the more surprising ones won the day. The English pea and asparagus green curry was beautiful, balanced, and surprised us with ingredients like the pickled cherries. A hands down surprise favorite of the meal. The Iberico pork was also generous, delicious as expected, but then surprised with this bright and fermented pea and mint-based side sauce and bright greens on the salad. Finally, the Sumatran style beef rendang was solid. This is a dish we often go for when on a menu but this version was a little salty and did need the rice to balance it. Some nitpicks here and there but a fantastic meal overall! We definitely over- ordered and had plenty of leftovers. If we were to go back in time, would probably skip the siu mai, grilled shrimp, sambal flight (did not end up eating much of it, no other dishes needed anything added), and rendang. When we got in, we were greeted by a friendly host and sat pretty quickly because we had a reservation. Visited Gado Gado on a Sunday before heading to the airport- luckily they had seating available at the bar for walk ins. My husband was looking for our last meal in Portland to be "full of color and flavor", and Gado Gado did not disappoint. We ordered a la carte and loved everything except for the Rendang. Held high expectations after hearing great things but honestly really fell short of expectations. They emphasized how the place was family style so we were like okay, the prices make a bit more sense. Well the $32 beef was small and probably barely enough for one person without rice (which is $6). I understand food that's worth sharing for the taste but family style usually implies larger portions for sharing. Service was nice, friendly, but nothing particularly special. Jell-o shot - this was not really a shot, almost feel like it's embarrassing to say jell-o shot because it was just eating jello with a spoon. We typically get drinkable jell-o shots that go down smoothly and are delicious. These were mild alongside just not being a drinkable item. Krupuk - shrimp chips with a peanut sauce. Sounds simple enough. Those chips came in handy for the other saucy items, a fair alternative to rice. Roti Canai - a very traditional Malaysian bread. Soft and fluffy and paired with a flavorful tomato curry. The tiny bit of roti is barely sufficient for the curry. Definitely paying more for the curry but both are small (realistically shared between 3-4 people). Chinese Sausage & Shrimp Siu Mai - this was our favorite item. We all love dim sum so obvious bias, but this was the most flavorful. Hints of Chinese sausage flavor were present, but the strongest flavor came from the aioli on top of the smoked roe. It even had a "soupy" effect after biting similar to a soup dumpling. Comes with 5 pieces so roughly $4 each. Sumatran Style Beef Rendang - we were told this was a chef's special and it was definitely delicious. Paired with rice, roti, or shrimp chips, this item is definitely a hit. On the downside, it's $40 or more for the beef with a carb on the side to absorb the flavors. Then the portion size is realistically for one to one and a half persons. I want to say that my opinion is biased since I grew up in South East Asia, but I want to start by saying that the food is actually good. The staff are really friendly and as someone of SEA-decent, I'm really happy with how they represented it. Starting off with the good. The food is good, my wife and I had the Chicken Tawar, Beef Rendang, and the Satay. Firstly, the chicken satay, I've never been a fan of peanut sauce, but theirs was amazing. I'm not sure if it's the saltiness of the shrimp, but it comes off much more balanced than other peanut sauces. Chicken tawar is not a dish I'm familiar with but again it tasted good and found a really good balance between rich and acidic. Beef rendang, is one of my favorite dishes of all time, so I had incredibly high expectations. Although I would say it is not completely traditional, it was still great. I loved the pairing of a mango salad to break up the heaviness. Even the sweetened ikan bilis is a good touch to add texture and flavor. My ONLY struggle is the pricing. Perhaps this is where my bias is reflected the most. In my head it is almost unfathomable that Sambal, which is a condiment, is 6$. Or how a single Roti Canai with curry is 16$. We got back pretty late from our hike and didn't have many dining options open at that hour. Since Gado Gado stays open until 9 pm, we decided to give it a try. The place has a cool, hipster vibe. We didn't have reservations, but were able to grab seats at the bar. We ordered the English pea and asparagus green curry, Sumatran-style beef rendang, roti canai, bakwan sayur, and scented rice. It was more than enough food for the three of us. You can really taste the quality in each dish, and the flavors were both unique and delicious. This place is going on my favorite's list! I loved everything we ordered but I liked the smoked chicken lawar the best. It reminded me of one of my favorite tea leaf salads except it has curry leaves and shrimp paste instead of tea leaves and fish sauce. It was fresh and aromatic and I would go back any day just for this salad. We also had the green cabbage and papaya bakwan sayur which came out in little itty bitty fried strips which were a little awkward to eat but the chutneys are what made the dish so good. The mint chutney was especially good. The green curry was also tasty but heavy on the coconut milk. We ordered a side of the clove scented rice to pair it with. Of course we had some roti and we all loved the blistered tomato curry that it came with so much that we ordered a second one. The decor was kitschy but fun. The staff were helpful and accommodating. Also, four of the five dishes we ordered were vegan, so if you're vegan this might be a nice place to go treat yourself. read more

We got the set menu for a party of 3, and that is my only regret, not because it isn't a good idea, but because there were a few things I wouldn't have otherwise ordered, and a few things I would have ordered that weren't on the regular set menu, such as the scallop crudo with a sauce that had pandan in it that I really wanted to try. It might have come with the pescatarian set menu though. Regardless, most of the set menu was highly enjoyed, such as the siu mai, roti, rice, chicken satay, and papaya salad. The omelette was only ok, the beef randan a bit to dry, and the donuts were also a little dry. Other than that, it was a great overall experience getting the "rice table." On a last note, the sambal and house assorted pickles were great and service kept that refilled. We've never had Indonesian food before so our servers were super helpful in helping us choose some dishes and explaining the best way to eat them to fully experience the flavor. I made a reservation for Friday at 7pm on opentable a few days prior. It seems like most (all?) of the availabilities are for the covered outdoor patio area, which is in front of the restaurant. This area is heated, so I felt nice and warm and protected from the rain as well. We ordered the Pescatarian Rice Table ($89/person). It's a great deal for 15 dishes. We went home with leftovers that our server packaged for us and labeled (and even put the sauce in tiny containers). The servers took the time to explain each dish as it came out and were super friendly. I loved everything we tried. They do have their own parking lot, but it was full when we arrived. Every dish we ordered was really good. It was one of those meals where everything just hit. You could tell right away that a lot of care went into the food. The flavors were well balanced and everything tasted fresh and satisfying. The skewers were a standout for me. They were extremely tender and juicy and cooked perfectly. The meat was soft, flavorful, and not dry at all. You could really taste how well they were grilled. My favorite part of the meal was the roti. It was so soft and fluffy on the inside with just the right amount of crunch on the outside. Warm and fresh and honestly hard to stop eating. Had this place on my list of places to try in Portland, and finally got around to going recently. They serve some classic and some innovative takes on Indonesian food, and I was very impressed by the bold flavors in the dishes I tried. In particular, I really enjoyed the soft shell crab papaya salad, beef rendang (with shrimp chips), and the roti canai with tomato coconut curry (first time trying coconut curry). The yuzu aioli trout roe siu mai was also very unique and tasty, some of my favorite siu mai I've had. We were driving around looking for a place to have a date-night dinner and I remember that I saved this place and wanted to see what it was all about. It has been a long time since I've had Indonesian food and I was excited to basically try it again for the first time. We tucked ourselves into a table on a rainy day and were so excited for what we were about to try. The food at all of the tables around us looked so good. We looked to see what was popular and just let it roll in. Starting with the Chicken Satay that came with a spicy peanut sauce. I don't eat chicken and my fiance struggles with spicy, so I ate some of the peanut sauce and he ate the chicken and even without the sauce he said it was good. We started with the Roti Canai that came with garlicky blistered tomato curry- This was 100% the star of the show. I am actually drooling writing this review and I'm so sad I don't live in the PNW because I'd be here all the time. The roti... you guys the roti was meltingggg in my mouth, peeling apart and falling into pieces. I wish I could have just had 10 of these. The tomato curry was what dreams are made of. The flavor was so complex, so rich, I think my eyes closed and I may have seen stars. We finished with the English Pea and Asparagus Green Curry with a side of Oma's rice. This one kicked our butts. I was worried because if it was spicy to me- there was no way my fiance would eat it. (This man struggled with black pepper...) So the main attraction here is the tasting menu which is around $80 pp. We were unable to do that since my partner is allergic to shellfish and quite a few things had shellfish in it. They did have a helpful allergy menu that told us what we could order a la carte! What we ended up getting is a lot of goodies: the Roti Canai, Charcoal Grilled Chicken Satay, and the English Pea & Asparagus Green Curry! Everything was perfectly flavored and tasty. AWESOME!!! We ate at Gado Gado for the first time an Indonesian-Dutch inspired menu. We had no idea what to expect, and it was all excellent. First, the host Walker took very good care of us, and once we were seated, our waiter, Cesar picked up from there and continued with excellent service. There are two menus... the Rice Table menu, which has a fixed price, and the à la carte menu. We ordered from the à la cart menu. We ordered chicken satay, the zucchini and corn fritters, which were really good, the softshell, crab, papaya salad, also excellent, and the English pea & asparagus, green curry, and Oma's Clove Scented Rice. All of them were great choices. We started off with drinks, or so I thought. One of my friends had the Fool Me Thrice, another had the Disco Doll, and I had the Jell-O shot, which I thought was the name of a drink, because I hadn't read the menu very well , and it turned out to be an actual Jell-O shot. But it was still tasty. The atmosphere was buzzing and fun, and this is a place we will definitely return to again and again, as the food and the service were both spot on. I haven't been to this place since my 2019 visit, when I left with a disappointed review. My friend had booked a table for six of us, and I returned last Friday. We had a six-person table, but two of my friends couldn't make it. So, it was just four of us, all girls. I arrived first and ordered a cocktail ($16-Disco Boll). It was a barely half a glass with full ice. I was surprised by how small an amount that is and how it tasted like just juice. Later, my friends arrived. One of them ordered the same cocktail, and it came out as a full cup! I'm not joking! It was a FULL cup and tasted much stronger alcohol. We could tell that different people made the cocktail, but come on, you need quality control! We decided to order five different dishes, as the server had recommended six to seven for four people. We were wondering why he was pushing it so hard, since each dish was expensive. After the food arrived, we realized why he kept suggesting more. The portions were tiny! I honestly never understand food like curry, which needs rice, and they don't provide it. They charge extra for rice. Their 'English Pea Curry' ($28) didn't come with rice. We asked the server, and he suggested 'Roti Canai' ($16) instead of 'rice' ($6). Are you kidding me? A bowl of rice is $6? The 'Roti Canai' came with 'one roti' and some tomato sauce. We were still hungry and ended up ordering two more bowls of rice. The 'Chicken Satay' ($16) came with three skewers that tasted good. The 'Bakwan Sayur' ($16) was a strange dish. It was a bunch of very thin veggie strings fried together. It wasn't what we expected. The 'Scallop Crudo' ($26) was good, and we all liked it. Overall, the food tasted good, and the service was fast and friendly. The restaurant was cute. However, the portion sizes were ridiculous for the price! It's not a fine dining experience, and we paid $178.12 for four ladies. They included 20% gratuity, which we understood since we had booked a table for six people. However, since we were only four, it would have been better if they had informed us that they would still charge us 20% of the tip. Additionally, they charged 2% of 'Employee Health & Wellness'. I won't be returning to this restaurant. I had some hopes that this time might be different, but unfortunately, it wasn't. The prices were still way too high, and the portions were too small. Wow what amazing experience from beginning to end. The food was so tasty and each bite was definitely made with thoughtful love. There is outdoor and indoor seating. Drinks were refreshing. I would come again read more
