I really enjoyed my time at Top Burmese. I think everyone else has nailed it by saying that the vibes really are spectacular, it feels close and intimate without being stuffy, the mood lighting is moody without being too dark to see, the lights are warm and it feels almost like being in a friendly tavern from a fantasy book or movie (it just happens to be a Burmese tavern). The place fills up nicely so that you feel like you have the privacy of being in a crowd without it feeling crowded. The food is beautiful and I really love the dishware they use here. Overall the service was satisfactory, nothing really to write home about either way. That being said I would have liked the food to be a bit more substantial for the prices. The pricing felt a bit high for what was served both in terms of substance and quantity. A final minor note is that I consider calling the Turmeric Fries "fries" a bit misleading considering that they are most definitely chips and that was more than a little disappointing when they came out. read more

I'll start with the good things about my experience here tonight. The ambiance is perfect for a date night or getting together with friends. Both the cocktails and food were ridiculously good. They far exceeded our expectations going into the meal. We had the grand biryani, the vegan samosas, and the Burmese chicken curry. Every food dish blew my socks off, especially the curry. I would recommend, however, that they add a chili symbol to the grand biryani because it was actually quite spicy. In fact, the people next to us had to send it back because it was far too spicy, but not advertised as such. The amount of chicken in the grand biryani was spectacular and the portion was very large. Definitely worth the price tag on it. I also highly recommend the lychee lemon drop and the Burma blue cocktails. As another couple near us said, "everything was great except for the service". It's not that the people weren't friendly, it was just slow and very odd. It took 25 minutes for my wife and I to get our drinks. And had the couple next to us not reminded the server of the beer they ordered, they never would have received it. We never got our silverware and had to ask for that after receiving our food. Additionally, our neighbors ordered their entrees before us, yet we received our full order (the same exact order) before they did. We had 4 different servers over the course of the meal and I truly had no idea who was supposed to be our primary waiter and it seemed like none of them knew what was going on at the tables. The guy who took our orders at the beginning of the meal came by 15 minutes after we'd finished eating and our table had been cleared to ask if we ever received our meals (75 minutes after we'd been seated). This was on Valentine's Day so on less busy nights maybe things would be better. Altogether, my biggest recommendations for management would be to have 1 server take care of their own tables to ensure consistency/flow, and ensure that the menu more accurately reflects what is provided (add appropriate spice symbols). read more

I can forgive many things but there are certain things that make me unable to cut any slack. I have been warning to try their food for so long. They were present at a Yelp Elite Event and I was able to try several of their incredible salads. I was even more enthusiastic to try things - especially since the event had run out of their well known samosas. A vegan friend and I agreed to go as she'd also been hearing so many good things. Loved the space and vibe immediately. We wanted to try a bunch of things and opted to split the turmeric fries, paratha with dip and we both ordered 2 samosas. We really appreciated the gent her check took our order. He really wanted to help us. The samosas came with a dip we didn't really care for and apparently they were trying out some dips in the kitchen , so we accidentally got two extra ones that were different, we also were not that into. The dip which comes with the fries, we were also not that into. Then we tried the paratha dip called a coconut curry which was incredibly good. So good that we wanted it on everything. We were a touch low and still had some things. Another person brought me a coke refill so I asked for more of that curry dip.... he said oh sure. For my meal I got the citrus delight salad and the 'kneaded' fish. Both dishes were what I would describe as 'interesting'. After two bites, I didn't want either of them. The citrus salad was a cut up orange, some red onion, cilantro and goat cheese crumbles. I get that. That's the description, but there was zero cooking involved.... and then the fish was minced tilapia in a heap. So textural it was just weird and very 'fishy'. Then my friend was looking at the bill to figure how to split it up. There was a general food charge for $8. When she asked, our server had to go ask. He was shocked too saying that the extra sauce was EIGHT DOLLARS.... EIGHT... The whole appetizer with a pile of bread is $11... SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE THIS MAKE SENSE. IN WHAT WORLD WOULD I HAVE ORDERED AN EXTRA TABLESPOON OF THAT TO FINISH OFF 4 FRIES, IF SOMEONE HAD ACTUALLY TOLD ME THAT A TABLESPOON OF DIP COSTS $8. I kept expecting they would say it was a mistake, especially when we made it very clear we would not have ordered that. I guess I know how they paid for their robots. read more

This is probably my favorite Go To restaurant when I am craving comfort food. Their Chicken Coconut Noodle Soup is my favorite! Whether I am dining inside the restaurant (which is super cute with robot servers), or ordering food to go, I've never been disappointed here. If you dine, plan for some extra time to find street parking nearby, as it seems to be getting trickier these days. But once you are in the restaurant, the servers will take great care of you. In addition to the chicken coconut noodle soup, I always order a side of paratha (dip it in the soup to soak up all that yumminess!) and samosas. There's plenty of indoor seating, and there is a small amount of outdoor seating as well in the covered street area. I'm normally a wine drinker, but when I go here, it's all about the cocktails. They have such a great cocktail menu here. Ask for one of the drinks that changes color. It's fun and they also taste great! Loved the food and ambience here, though I wish it was cooler inside as we came in the middle of a heat wave and it felt quite stuffy. I came for Sunday dinner with a party of 4. Our friend had already arrived and grabbed a table by the time I got there, but it seemed to be a pretty hopping spot in the neighborhood. Most of the tables were full. The place feels on the fancier side as it's dimly lit and there are plenty of green plants placed throughout the restaurant. I didn't have any drinks, but one friend got both the mango and lychee beers ($7.95 each) and both were fantastic from the sips I tried. If all beers tasted like these, then I'd definitely be more of a beer gal! For appies, we shared the tamarind hot wings ($12.95) and the turmeric fries ($10). Both were good, but personally I found the wings too sweet from the tamarind. I prefer savory wings. I wasn't super hungry, so I shared the Burmese chicken curry ($23) with a friend. I'm so glad we got this, as it was delicious! The chicken was tender and moist and the gravy was flavorful without being too spicy. Another friend got the sweet pumpkin curry ($23). I tried a couple bites and I loved that as well, especially since they use kabocha which is one of my faves. We were here for a while chatting and eating and never felt rushed. Our server came to refill our water several times and even showed us the lychee and mango beer can when we asked, so that we could try to find it ourselves. My go to is the Shan Noodles with Chicken which is a taste explosion of pickled veggies, peanuts, tomatoes, etc. The Burmese Gold Samosas are so good and crispy and flavorful! The atmosphere is kind of dark, so I like sitting by the window in day time. The robot server is a fun touch and the staff are so attentive but not overbearing. With elements of Thai and southeastern flavors, the dishes were unique and tasty. I was disappointed with my experience at this restaurant, particularly the prices not aligned with the quality of food. For the price i expected a higher quality of dining. In addition to the food, the level of professionalism among the staff was embarrassing. During the few times ive been there the employees have been disengaged and unprofessional while on shift. I've PERSONALLY observed staff members smoking before going back to shift, some of them reek of weed, some of them consume alcoholic drinks on shift and offering alcohol to one another during work hours. The only good thing id like to add is that it was somewhat nice inside, that's it. Overall my experience here has been bad and i don't recommend dining here. read more

The flavors were bold, the portions generous, and everything came out hot and fresh. Been wanting to try this place for a while! The decor and dark lightening was a vibe. There was a robot serving tables so that was cool to watch! We had the veggie samosas and it was flavorful and delicious! I had a dragon fruit drink and that was also really good! The Burma lagoon was okay, it tasted like lucky charms cereal so if you're into that, this is for you. I ordered the eggplant curry and it was okay. The portion was very small and that was the first time I was served curry on a plate. The food was good but very salty for my liking. The Khao soi was flavorful and the spices meshed well. While I was there, I went to the bathroom and people were telling me to not go in because of how dirty it was so I'd suggest to improve on the cleanliness there. The location is beautiful. The inside is dark, with various lamps, fountains, and plants everywhere. They also a robot server with a cat face, which is cute. The staff is still very attentive to the tables. If you want to go somewhere cohesive and aesthetic, this is the place. The drinks are super fun and colorful. They are served with either a backlight, unique glassware, or butterfly pea flower (which creates a fantastic color). I usually split a tea leaf salad and entree/small plate. If you love salad, tea, and fermented foods, you will 100% love this salad. It is so fresh, with such a unique flavor. I am so happy I have the opportunity to eat such delicious Burmese food here in Portland. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't eat this salad anymore. The color scheme is black and gold with earthy browns and green. We sat in the corner where there was a water fountain and indoor plants. It made it feel very homey and inviting. Our server was so professional, attentive and sweet. I give this place a 3 star because of the pricing of the food for what you get. We got the happy hour fries with wings, Khao soi, butterfly pea coconut drink, biryani. Happy hour chips were over salted and it was $13 for 2 wings. If you want to get your moneys worth this dish was not cost effective. The Khao soi was not dynamic but the serving size was decent. The Biryani was basic and a good portion but still over priced for the ingredients that go into it. There's many other delicious restaurants around in the area that I'd go to instead of here. Had dinner here on a Friday night with a friend. It wasn't overly busy, which was nice. We ate outside - it was fun to people watch while we chatted. Food was fresh and delicious and drinks were good too. They have a large selection of non-alcoholic drinks and cocktails that looked good and we both ended up ordering n/a. Drinks hit the spot without being too sweet. We ordered the fermented tea leaves salad and the eggplant dish to share and it was the perfect amount of food. I love that the menu clearly states what is gluten free or contains nuts/soy and also marked vegan & vegetarian dishes. Very easy for someone with food sensitivities (like me!) to find something to eat. Servers were friendly and knowledgeable and gave us plenty of space to chat and catch up. What a fantastic spot to try fresh, bright flavors! We were a group and shared our food family style. The GLP wings and veggie samosas were a big hit among the appetizers. The coconut noodle soup was by far the most loved main and everyone enjoyed the coconut ice cream with chunks of fresh coconut. Yum! The only thing we were not thrilled by were the cocktails and mocktails. They all sounded incredible but none of them were enjoyed at our table and we tried 5. Top Burmese in downtown Portland was one of my favorite restaurants. The flavors were bold, the plating was vivid, and the authenticity was on point. Unfortunately, in their expansion down the highway to Beaverton, something was lost along the way. I was so excited to have the Burmese food so much closer to my home only to be disappointed. The "Shoo Share" Salad, my favorite dish, has lost its spicy splendor. The "Eggplant Curry" and the "Fried Fish Filet" tasted mostly of salt and little else. To be fair, there are still some standouts. The "Tumeric Fries" we were fighting over for the last crumb: perfectly fried and seasoned. The "Gold Samosas" were perfectly proportioned and stuffed with fluffy, delicious potato. And the "Khao Soi" is just as rich, creamy, kind of buttery it's always been. I'll always love Top Burmese for providing so many exciting vegan and vegetarian options. The plating is still chic, and the expanded store in Beaverton gives way more room to breathe. The vibe sort of feels like a fully realized and fleshed out Pok Pok (rip), with retro styling that's part elegant part retro Burmese pop. The servers were incredibly attentive and kind. But sadly, the Beaverton location lacks the crackling pizzazz, zest, and soul that I felt in the original Top Burmese. read more

The worst Mother's Day experience. Got reservations so they knew we were coming. Gave us dirty food caked menus. Took our orders and forgot them so had to ask us what we ordered five minutes later. Still got it wrong. Asked for a pot of tea for the table and they gave us 3/4 dirty cups (it wasn't stained it was something I was able to scratch off with my fingers) nasty. They replaced 3/4 cups with tiny cups the size of 2 thimbles. So each cup was a small mouthful. Like tinier than a toddler sippy cup. Tinier than their traditional Chinese tea cups. We asked for our two teenage boys to have the same meal but for each of them and they thought we meant both boys would share one tiny meal. So they had to rush the second meal. They didn't tell us they were out of a dessert until we ordered it and they never brought it out to us, they just said ok and later when we asked they said sorry it's gone. We would've paid $200 for this meal but refused and only paid $140 since we got the non existent dessert taken off and got the gratuities taken off. We will never go back. Food was also tiny portions for $23+ a plate and my mom's basic chicken curry was too salty. read more

What a treat! The ambiance, food, experience, all was fantastic. Staff were friendly and welcoming, plus the restaurant was accommodating for a larger group. As many of us had not been before, we ordered quite the array of food to try. The lemon pepper wings were cooked to perfection and had a slight vinegar taste that was incorporated. The samosas were light and very flavorful. Green tea salad was unique and delicious. Chicken curry was good, but really salty. I wasn't as much of a fan but flavor was still OK. Beef curry was tender. I didn't see any veggies in the curries? All in all food was well received and the drinks were the stars of the shows. It was my first time there last night and we'll probably try it again to just get more of an idea of the food. The customer service was good and our server seemed very passionate about the food, which is appreciated. The food is brought by a robot, which is filthy. It was unnerving to have our plates of food on a rolling electric robot that had dust and dirt all over it. Plus it's just kind of a silly gimmick. So the visit started out kind of weird, seeing this dirty robot. Now for the food .... the chicken curry is fine, the meat was tender. The curry gravy itself wasn't as flavorful as it could've been, it tasted more salty than anything. On this dish I would up the ginger, garlic, and lower the sodium. Coconut rice was good, the portion was a little small. Paratha is sort of a thin naan bread, very buttery. Ours was translucent, it had absorbed too much grease. I would suggest getting the grill much hotter and grill these very briefly, so they don't get so gummy. Fun cocktails and mocktails. Dessert was interesting, they have a traditional dessert called falooda. The main ingredient in the falooda is vermicelli noodles. But the vermicelli isn't mentioned on the menu. So if someone was unfamiliar with that dessert, they would read the menu and it would just sound like a trifle. When I mentioned that to the server, she said that if anyone from South Asian descent were to read the menu, they would understand what falooda was. So... This is a special menu item, just for people who have already had it? we paid $11 for a dessert that we didn't enjoy because they didn't list the main ingredient in it ....which is basically spaghetti. I came here for a business lunch around 1:30 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon and it wasn't very busy. It's nice that they're open through the afternoon so we didn't have to feel rushed. We were greeted and seated right away. The interior is intimate and dimly lit (maybe a little too much; my colleague had to turn on his phone's flashlight to read the menu). They have a big drink menu; I liked the mango passion fruit kombucha. I was very happy to hear that they have a dedicated gluten free fryer, so the items they label "GF" would be free from cross-contamination if fried. We got the Tamarind Hot Wings (4 pieces) and the Shoo Share salad to start. Both were very good and had unique flavors. I got the Okra curry and my colleague got the Coconut Noodle Soup/Khao Soi, which we both really enjoyed. I also ordered coconut rice with my curry, and it was pretty tasty. We were stuffed and my colleague needed a container for his noodle soup, so the portions are very generous.
