Went here for the first time this weekend. I had heard great things about this bar and it lived up to my expectations. The atmosphere is amazing. The drinks are amazing. The view of the Denton square from the front room is amazing. I will definitely be a returning customer. I ordered the hot buttered rum which was superb. It's a seasonal drink so get it if you can! BUT...I've been 3 times now, have never seen a person of color (of any color other than white) employed there...AND some of the patronage turned out to be not just pretentious but pervy! It reminds me of a number of basic/cute bar in NYC. So you're in Denton, when you decide you want a decently priced, well mixed drink in a classy prohibition area speakeasy bar where the bartenders dress the part? Just walk upstairs to Paschall! Enter and you can just smell the class coming out of that room. Books, a chessboard, fantastic elegant and comfortable furniture are just the start. Walk over to the bar and take a look at their extensive list of mixed beverages, wines, and beers. Oh, and no need to be dressy... shorts and a t-shirt are fine. The bartenders are dressed to suit the bar, and are really great at making drinks. They mix it right in front of you (and everyone else), and they make it correctly! That's hard to find around these parts. Most people just throw the stuff in and shake it up... not here. These drinks are amazing AND very well priced. The atmosphere allows for some great conversation with friends or a date, and is really conducive to relaxing the evening away. Not sure what else positive I can say about this place. It's an awesome bar if you're into something classy but not dressy, someplace that's pretty quiet where a good intelligent conversation can be held, and delicious drinks can be had. Let me start off by saying I'm almost 40 and definitely not a hipster, but I absolutely loved this place. Small and intimate with a fun vibe. If we hadn't been told about this place, we never would have known this Speakeasy existed, which made it even cooler. We tried The Alamo and The Harvest Pear- both great drinks. Just like the rest of the places owned by the same person, the service and attention to detail in the decor is bar none. We plan on returning until we have tried every drink. Went here for the first time on Saturday. This particular speakeasy offers a variety of craft drinks and beer. As you enter up the stairs above Andy's bar, it seems as you've been sent back to the 1920's. Antique The decor is interesting and very retro. The ambiance is very laid back. It's refreshing to find a bar that you can walk in while not feel crowded. The bar is filled with interesting characters as well. The bartenders are busy shaking their hands in the sky as they build you craft martinis. They are very meticulous and follow a complex process of making your drink. I admire their attention to chilling their glass and placing the garnish on your drinks very carefully. Also, in the other room away from the bar are several lounges that you can sit at and a place to play darts. If you're a chess fiend they offer you a super large chess piece set. If you're up for a martini your best bets seem to be the french pearl and the espresso martini. The french pearl is an absinthe and mint based martini with notes of lemon and sweetness. The espresso martini is a delicious vodka martini that's very rich and on the sweeter side with creamy notes of chocolate. This is probably the best martini. My girlfriend and i really loved it. We could have drank a whole bucket of the vodka martini. Each martinis run around 6.50-8 bucks. It's surprisingly cheap considering many martini bar's i've been to price them higher. We stopped in to Paschall's for a quick drink that turned into two after we settled on one of the couches near the front windows, where there is a great view of the courthouse and square. The view gets even better if you happen to be there as the sun sets behind the courthouse and the lights come on around the square. The drinks were good and not as expensive as I thought after reading a couple other reviews. $5 for a call-brand martini and $4 for a glass of cab seems very reasonable to us. If you haven't already gotten an idea of the decor from other reviews, think Sherlock Holmes' private study. And the music gets special mention as it did in a couple other reviews -- "eclectic" is a good descriptor -- we heard everything from techno-pop to a deep cut from an old James Brown album, and while the volume was loud enough to let you know the music was there, it didn't overpower table conversation. Only one complaint, and it has absolutely nothing to do with Paschall's, which we liked a lot: We are not from Denton, so on arrival at the bar we were a little surprised to be stopped just inside the door by a morality Nazi who informed us that he must scan our driver's licenses so that Satan has a clear record of all sinners who enter therein. We would like the good people of Denton to know that Jesus has long since moved on to matters much more important than requiring consumers of alcohol to be publicly flogged. So, hopefully, they will vote that little humiliation out of their city ordinances at their earliest convenience. My wife actually thought she was signing some weird "pay now, drink later" deal, so when she innocently tried to walk away with her "receipt," the Nazi had a fit. That would have been hilarious if it wasn't so sadly anachronistic. Paschall's. Try it. You'll like it. And pay no attention to that Nazi behind the curtain. This place is for anyone who ever felt misplaced in the world. I feel like we all have a secret place in our heads that we wished existed. Paschall's is that place. Secret. Great drinks. Great staff. Great ambiance. If you are looking for a speak easy place to have a nice conversation with someone over a game of chess, on a comfortable couch, playing darts, staring out at the beautiful view of the square, or just stand against the wall with, then this is your place. My one complaint is that they are now allowing in more people than they used to, and it is just far too crowded. It's difficult to ever sit down, and the wait at the bar has become a little frustrating. 50 was perfect...60 is too much. It kind of kills the intimacy the place had going. This quaint speakeasy overlooks the Denton square. I took my parents here after dinner and they thoroughly enjoyed it. My only complaint was that the bathrooms weren't the best and the absinthe didn't taste like the absinthe I've had before. The space used to be a bar years ago so it's nice that they have it the same purpose. Overall a great place with plenty of seating for couples, not so much for groups. read more

This is one of my favorite bars I've ever been to. On weekends when it's really crowded I sometimes wish it was bigger, but the size of it is perfect for its ambience. It's like having a cocktail in somebody's eclectic library. The décor is just too great. They have beautiful vintage/mid-century lights, almost clunky furniture, and cool art. A mock of Michelangelo's Torment of Saint Anthony hangs in one of the main rooms. (Which you can see for free at the Kimbell just forty minutes south.) I also really love the photos hanging on the men and women's restrooms. Anyway, the cocktails here are good and cheaper than most in Ft. Worth. I always get French 75s, which I'm a fan of everywhere, but I've tried a few other drinks here and sipped on friends' drinks and they're always winners. They make good cocktails. I know they also do brunch here, but I've never been able to attend. This place is sort of obscure/hard to find. It's just a big brown door across from the square and next door to an obnoxiously loud bar, Andy's. You show your ID to the guy at the base of the stairs and then head up. A small group of friends and I were in the square for a car show on a Saturday afternoon. After seeing the cars, a tasty and greasy lunch at the loop hole and plenty of rummaging in the junk shops, we stumbled into this bar. Downstairs looks quite skanky (by this I mean, dark, dirty and smelly) especially in the day time. The guy at the door suggested we go upstairs to Andys Bar. I hesitate to write a review because we felt as though we found something so incredibly special. I so want to keep it hidden. It is very small but well decorated, cozy, classy with a cool bartender making unusual and delicious drinks. It is one of the coolest bars I have ever been in. It makes you feels as though you have stepped into a different world. Very laid back and sophisticated. I am looking forward to returning. read more

Located on the second floor in a building, it's home to an excellent, knowledgeable staff, a wide beer selection, lots of board games, and fantastic interior decor. Hade you ever had the desire to walk into a secret society from the 1920's? Like something you you might see in psychedelic 80's mysteries? Well that's what this bar is like. Dark, musty, old, velvetine, exclusive (not actually). You'll feel like your in another world. There are chess boards to tickle your mind while you sip on some fine cocktail (it's not really a get-hammered type of place). There are vintage sofas and chairs which distinguish you from the bar-hopping proletariat. There's a quiet bartend and more hipsters than you can shake a walking cane at. The ambiance is really nice but the specific server we were seated with has to remember this is still a customer service environment. Two people in our party asked for a modification to their drink and were made to feel like idiots for the request. A drink was requested with a different liquor than what it was normally made with, and the server compared the request to asking for a chocolate cake but with vanilla rather than chocolate. Whether or not you agree the customer is always right when it comes to what they want. If you would like to recommend something other than what the customer asks for do it with dignity and respect to the customer. Other than the bad experience with the specific server we were seated with everything else was perfect. A friend had recommended this bar several years ago but didn't know the name. I finally made it to Denton for Arts & Jazz Fest 2018, and I made a point to hunt down the "hidden bar on the square." After locating an unmarked but likely door and heading up a narrow staircase, we checked in with the coat check and headed into the bar. The décor is dark-paneled comfort that reminded me of a smoking lounge. The cocktails were well-mixed and very reasonably priced for the amount of work that went into some. The bartenders were knowledgeable and gave good recommendations. The bar was busy, so seating was sparse, but everyone seemed to be having a good time. Discreetly located up the stairs behind an unmarked door is a quiet little speakeasy that overlooks the Denton town square. A friend and I were lucky enough to find this place in during negroni week and they were running a special for $5. I was a slightly skeptical because of the price at first, but all that washed away as I sipped on this perfectly crafted classic cocktail. I would put this as one of the best that I've had anywhere, and I know that if a bar can make a great negroni, it's usually a good sign everything is pretty good. We unfortunately could not stay for more than one cocktail on this trip, but I will sure be back for more next time I'm in town. Not only are the drinks great, but he atmosphere goes perfectly with with the classic cocktail theme. I could easily imagine that I was in the secret library of a roaring 20's mobster or Chicago politician. There are lounge areas for small groups of people, and a few small tables for couples. The bar staff is very friendly and accommodating, and all dress the part as well - think hipster meets F. Scott Fitzgerald and you've got it. I thank my lucky stars for sending us the angel to tell us how to get into Paschall's - as I mentioned, the door is unmarked. Monday night visit on suggestion of bartender at a local hotel. Glad i came to check it out. Entry to bar is unassuming and not hard to find. Just pull on doors until you see stairs going up. Lol. Once upstairs you will see a room with dart boards to your left and the bar, tables and chairs and a pool table to your right. At the bar, look up to the left for beer choices and up in front for other beverages. Order. Sip and chill. Crowd was slim, of course, since it was a Monday night. It takes a little longer to get a drink, but who the hell cares once you take the first sip of these meticulously crafted alcohol forward drinks. Pascal's biggest problem is that it's no longer a secret. I've tried to go twice since my very enjoyable initial visit and have been turned away from it being at capacity both times. It truly is awesome though - laid back, great drink selection (they do Old Fashioneds quite well), with lots of board games, books, darts, etc. It's just quite frustrating when you know there's a good chance you won't even be able to get in. This bar wasn't around when I was living in Denton, but I wish it had been. It's a classy bar serving great drinks without the pretentiousness I find at bars like this in my current city. The bartenders were really friendly and they made one of the best old fashioneds I've ever had (using Bulleit Rye, one of my favorites!). The prices weren't ridiculous and considering the quality of the drinks I found them to be very reasonable. The atmosphere was very relaxing and we just missed the jazz band playing that night, though the regulars raved about them. Love this place. Great atmosphere and usually great service...but why, oh why did you shake my Martini last time? For $10 a drink in Denton, please don't murder anymore cocktails. If I wanted a watery, ice shard cluttered martini, I'd go to Harvest House. You're better than that. Other than that incident, pretty great place. No muddled fruit in old fashioneds (and they don't even blink if you order one with rum or tequila instead of rye) and probably the only place in Denton that can serve a Sazerac or Last Word properly. Raising standards and doing away with the fixtures of the status quo can narrow a business's clientele: Luckily, Pascal's in Denton is a very narrow space to begin with, nestled atop Andy's on the square. In a classic episode of the Simpsons, Homer testifies to the FBI that his activity in a local bar consisted of "discussing Wittgenstein over backgammon." They remind him that he is under oath, and suddenly the night in question involves eating mustard packets in the back seat of someone's car. The real joke is that scarcely any bar is dedicated to classy activity anymore, and like most jokes it contains a sad truth. The fact is, bars have gotten noisier, less engaging, and more jammed with TVs than ever. Pascal's is offering something entirely different to the Denton community. There are no live bands, there is no blaring house music. Instead one finds the incandescent mellowness of a pub, more board games than you would find on an ocean liner, and the voluminous bookshelves of an eccentric hermit-all in a space for 49 occupants. "When we were decorating it for the vibe, we wanted to create a classic, warm atmosphere," said owner Eric Pulido. "One conducive to community, conversation and art. If a bar is loud or not as welcoming to conversation, that doesn't make it a bad bar, but there's already plenty of that." Even though he is a musician by trade, Pulido envisioned a bar without the typical dependence on rotating live acts or virtual atmosphere from domineering DJs. He is searching for something more unusual to contribute to the wide selection of bars in Denton. On Tuesday nights, Pascal's has an early-evening lecture series up for a trial run. "We'll see how it goes," said Pulido. "We had someone speak on Rock and Roll History, and we will have philosophy, then art if people like it." For many Denton citizens it will offer the long-awaited opportunity to drink openly in a classroom setting. For those in search of straightforward drinks and seating, Pascal's is adorned with hanging art, decorous fixtures and much well-preserved furniture from different eras of our American past. The cocktail list is exotic, featuring a daiquiri inspired by Ernest Hemingway and the delicious espresso martini. A large beer list is complemented by a burgeoning wine list: "Wine is on the way," according to the manager. At Pascal's the refinement of a longstanding Dallas bar meets the economy of Denton's extra-special nightclub prices, with most drinks averaging between $5 and $7, and Happy Hour (4-7 PM) taking a dollar off everything. On Thursdays and Fridays there is usually a table laid out with free food. "The drinks are pricey for Denton," the manager Jeremy Dean admitted, "But look at our well liquors. Bombay gin, Jack Daniels, Monopolowa Vodka. No one else is using those to make well drinks." Plus the bartenders practice their craft with ingenuity, offering new concoctions and long-lost recipes when inspiration strikes them. December had hot mulled cider, and New Year's brought fanciful champagne cocktails. Holidays and events get special treatment, but one never knows what it will be. Pascal's does not advertise its wares, just as it does not display its name in front of the bar. Yes, Pascal's is one of those rarer bars in which knowing about it is a prerequisite for discovering it. "One reason against the sign is how we would have to mess with the old building," said Pulido. "I am a member of Denton's Historic Building Committee, so it is my own concern too." "We like the word of mouth aspect," the manager Jeremy Dean explained. "It adds to the speak-easy element." Nevertheless there is sometimes a line down the stairs, giving Pascal's the appearance of popularity; and on weekends it can take 15 to 20 minutes to be waved in. "We don't try to look elitist," said Pulido, "But with an occupancy of 49 people, including staff, it can get backed up. So we hope it's not just because there's a line that people want to get in, but that they would wait because they want that kind of cocktail or that type of vibe." As I left at 4 PM, when the bar opens every day, the manager mentioned that the bar had a facebook page and I told him I saw it but couldn't get a lot of information from it.
