Went out to PG to try out so e great seafood...and found it! Sustainable restaurant with a great menu. Tried the scallop dish and halibut for dinner. Very well done and succulent. Wonderful food experience. Had read the menu the night before going and was delighted that each dish was as good as it was described on the menu. Had the scallop for a starter, the warm brussel sprout salad and the spoonable 12 hour lamb breast. Split the salad and the lamb and it was a very satisfying meal. This place was recommended by a local woman. This restaurant had an impressive wine list including wines you really never see in other restaurants. They also don't mark the wine up very much. I had and highly recommed the Warwick Souvingion Blanc from South Africa. I always look for South African wines, as I find them to usually be exceptional. Now the food. Some things were very good and some things were not. I really recommend the sweet potato fries. Yummy! The crabcake (yes singular) was subpar amd small, not having much flavor at all. The scallops were very well prapard but you only got 3 for $24. I think that 6 would have been more appropriate for the price, regardless of how good they were. The fish stew was not very good at all. The service was very good. The staff were quite accomodating. Dessert: Needs some work. Below average for a restauant of this caliber. I would really only rate this 3 1/2 stars if there was a way to split the stas. read more

Passionfish served us the best meal we've had in months. We went there somewhat on a whim - I hadn't researched the Monterey area very well - and were bowled over by absolutely everything about the restaurant. The waiter and front of the house staff were warm and down-to-earth. My husband started with the oysters in an orange-ginger broth, which he loved. The half bottle of Pinot Noir the waiter recommended was lip-smacking good. My husband's green salad was good (probably the least fantastic element of the evening, but still good); my heirloom tomato and avocado salad with feta was silky and succulent, tangy and salty, and BIG! Oh, I adored it. Our mains were salmon with coriander butter (him) and duck confit with fennel and au gratin potatoes (me). I generally hate fish but keep trying to learn to like it, and I could have eaten this salmon all night... if it weren't for my duck confit, crispy and tender, nestled in fennel and salty-wonderful potatoes. We didn't even have room for dessert. Everything about this restaurant made us feel wonderful - great people, great values (both moral and pecuniary), and great, great food. We are already trying to figure out how we can come back soon. read more

The creamed corn soup with little hints of bacon was delicious, as well as my husband's greens salad which had some chutney and pears. The sablefish that I got was perfectly cooked. Truly a destination restaurant. My wife and I were looking for a nice place for dinner while away for our anniversary and stumbled upon this gem. The food is absolutely amazing and the wine selection is even better, and sold at retail. We shared some Tuna Arancini and a Dungeness Crab Salad with an amazing Ginger-Habanero Vinaigrette. Wow! Thats all I can say is just wow! Aside from the beet salad everything was off the hook. We had dinner here our first night in Pacific Groove. The wine list is super user friendly especially for those who dont drink wine often. We purchased a very affordable botttle of white wine for 30 dollars, it went superbly with the dinner. Whatever you do make sure if your ever at PF you get the crab cake with the tomato salsa, yum! I got the scallops that were cooked in a tomato butter, they were so perfectly cooked and sweet too. Wifey got the tilapia with a balsamic glaze and mased potatoes, soooo good too! Dont expect a huge menu here, which is a good thing if your looking for really good food, but what they do offer on their small menu is awsome. read more

We had fantastic fresh local seafood creatively prepared. The crab salad with avocado was freshness on a plate. The local Monterey Bay salmon was the best I've ever had (and I've had salmon in Alaska). The wines are fairly priced, not hugely marked up like most restaurants, so you can actually enjoy a good bottle with your meal (and the selection is excellent). Wow what a disappointment! We had been here before a few years ago and looked forward to returning. I had a reservation at 6 and thought it was at 7 so they get kudos for not making my mistake a big deal and sat us anyways. The server was very attentive so service was not lacking. The Rock Shrimp was not very good, almost mushy. My husband ordered lamb and was told by the server it was prepared differently than normal. He opted to give it a try anyways. It wasn't a good decision to no fault of the server, he warned us. The only plus of the eveing was that we ordered the pear bread pudding and some hot loose leaf tea that was super yummy, We devoured the dessert and were very pleased with it so the bread pudding deserves a 5 as the the service. After all the great reviews, I was looking forward to a great meal. Unfortunately, we won't be returning to Passionfish. read more

I really wanted to like this place because I believe in what they are doing - offering sustainable fish. The decor is lovely and the service was friendly. Pretty loud, however. Unfortunately, I didn't like the food at all. We shared a salad made of fried sardine, ricotta, roasted romaine and red onion. The server explained it was to be mixed together before eating. Just did not taste good. My husband and I both ordered trout. I asked for it without the head. I was a bit surprised with the presentation - the fish looked like the head had been hacked off with a spoon. I found the taste of the fish unpleasant, also, perhaps due to what it was stuffed with. The vegetables were very good. Used to get a trout meal at Marie Callendar's (no head) which was much better - maybe my taste is very unsophisticated. read more

The savory rice pudding was rich, had a strong cheddar taste, and was even slightly mushy, but the flavor was great. - We also tried the pork cheek. It was extremely tender. The mustard sauce may not be for everyone, but had a nice contrast and combination of spicy and sweet. SERVICE - Waitress was attentive and polite. Food came out timely. AMBIANCE - The restaurant has a lot of potential but for me lacked the charm and intimacy you'd expect from a place in Monterey. I ordered the rainbow trout, he ordered the Monterey Bay salmon, and we both began with a the corn chowder. The food was delicious, though very rich, and the service was attentive and friendly. We were completely stuffed after our entrees and were not able to sample the desserts. The tables are very close together, but the party dining next to us was charming (I hope that they were equally pleased to be seated next to us!). I'm not sure this restaurant would be ideal for intimate conversation, but it was perfect for a vacation meal. read more

We came in without a reservation but got seated quickly. We loved the ideas and philosophies behind this place, and there were notes of it all over the restaurant. The simple images of fish were an excellent touch. The ricotta gnocchi was so good and melt in your mouth. The avocado crab salad was so perfectly balanced in flavors, textures, and so fresh. Im only giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 because they do not serve wild caught fish. The food was excellent! I ordered the Ricotta gnocchi/tomato brown butter/arugula 8 scallops and they were FANTASTIC!!t I then ordered the Sea Scallops/tomato-truffle butter/savory rice pudding 26 it was also very good... not as good as the appetizers .... I was not so hot on the side rice dish but no big deal. The price was not bad for the type of food. I am used to paying a bit more for this type of meal in Orange County. I just wish they would serve wild caught. I know they are all about sustainability but really farm fish!
