This is a tiny shop located in the heart of little Thailand this shop specializes in noodle soups and only has a few variations of all the different dishes. There are maybe at most 15 seats in the shop so if you eat here don't expect to linger I've decided to get the talk which is the pork soup and it was quite flavorful and definitely packed a spicy punch. However, I think for the price they could have given a bigger portion. The most expensive part of this meal is the broth because of the time it takes, but all I'm asking is for maybe a little bit more noodles maybe more than just one sprig of vegetable that they cut in multiple pieces. For every broth options, you also have ~5 different noodle options to choose from. NAM TOK: Personally I really enjoyed the Nam Tok with the rice noodles. The noodles absorbed the flavors of the rich broth really well. The broth is a pork blood based noodle seasoned with chili and fish sauce; it was rich and nourishing with a bit of a heat, but not too overwhelming. It came with a decent amount of pork slices, pork liver/blood, pork rinds and fish balls. Probs a must order for me! DRY TOM YUM: I opted for egg noodles for this. The dish consisted roast pork slices, pork blood, fish balls, seasoned ground pork and fried pork rinds. It came with the tangy broth on the side. I visited my parents after work one rainy evening and my dad was raving about the Nam Tok dish from the place. When we walked in I had flashbacks because the first time I came was on a date when this restaurant first opened about 6-7 years ago. This place is cash only and known for their cocktails and dinner foods. Fast forward to 2021, place was renovated to accommodate outdoor dining. Place was dead except the one regular who just hangs out there to get drunk every night (that's the story I was told). Place is still cash only. When we sat down there was lots of napkins and hand sanitizer on eat table. Staff were masks and gloves. My dad ordered the Tom yum dry noodles and I ordered the Nam Tok noodle soup. Both dishes were prepared as if you are out in the night markets watching the cook prep, cook and put the dish together. When I ate both dishes, they were made authentically spicy. The nam tok soup was more authentic than Dek Sen. Ironically I had this dish before at the Thai New Year festival in 2018 when they made were preparing it outside. The dish then hit the spot. Woodside/Elmhurst really has the best and most authentic Thai spots in the city. Pata Paplean serves Thai noodles, either in soup or dry form and their food is pretty fantastic. Located on Woodside Avenue across from another must try Thai spot, it's a perfect place for those that want to get a taste of authentic Thai noodles with zero compromise for the Western palate. Here, they put the full amount of spices and flavors and put all the goodies like liver that some places omit. The tom yum dry noodles are a combination of sweet, sour and spicy and are a must try. The tom yum soup noodles are swimming in a perfectly balanced broth of sweet, sour and spicy that warms the soul. Portions are smaller than your average meal and that's because it's consistent with portions that Thai people find in Thailand where people eat smaller portions more frequently throughout the day. Prices here are fair but some might balk at 8-10 dollars for a small bowl of noodles. Service is friendly but food comes out a bit slow since they can't make too many bowls at the same time. Pata Paplean is the epitome of a casual, neighborhood friendly bar. It is hardly gargantuan, but cosy enough to enjoy a night capper with a small group of friends or a solo outing. It really is an easy spot to sit down and enjoy a quality adult beverage while enjoying the remaining hours of the day / evening. Like many businesses in Woodside / Elmhurst proper, it is Thai owned and operated. The folks who work here are ultra friendly, which is likely why I keep coming back. The interior is something like a cafe gone rogue, a decor that is screams convivial (especially the strobed out bathroom) more so than the average tiny spot. There is a divey element to it, but not enough to make people turn the other way. If I'm not slinging a Singha beer, I'm usually indulging in one of their super tall cocktails bringing back to my times in SE Asia all over again. Occasionally the bartender will come out with complimentary shots to liven up the crowd. Some days I'm just people watching out the window and magically a shot will appear out of nowhere. Eventually I'll turn a Tuesday into a Friday by joining the drinkwagon. No regrets. But really, this is a fun spot to stop by for pre-gaming, pre-meal and also post-meal into the night. There aren't many bells and whistles to marvel at like some other niche stuck up bars, but this place lacks the pretension and brings in plenty of fun. This review is based on the number of times I tried to get the boat noodles served here, and the quality of the noodles once I finally got them. Based on food blogs and previous reviews, I surmised that the boat noodles are available Fridays and weekends only. Based on Google Maps, I surmised that the bar is open after 7 p.m. everyday. Based on that information, my friend and I went at 9 p.m. on a Friday night for a late dinner. We sat down, saw the boat boodles were not on the menu, and asked if they were available. Was told they're available 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays to Sunday, and was advised to call ahead to confirm availability. Which struck us as weird since Google Maps and the bar signage clearly say the bar is open 7 p.m. Nevertheless, one cold Saturday a month later, we decided to try again at 12:05 p.m. The bar was clearly closed. We had called and no one picked up. Confused and starving, we went to the HK Food Court a few blocks away to get something small and quick to eat while we strategized. At 1 p.m., we called. No one picked up. Regardless, we walked all the back to the bar, noted that it still looked closed, and opted to peruse the mini market across the street. At 1:10 p.m., we emerged from the market and saw the curtains had been pulled back and people were sitting inside the bar. So we went in. There were 6-7 customers inside who were ordering the boat noodles (still no menu, had to be asked for), aside from the 2-3 staffers who were eating the boat noodles for lunch. There were four noodle bowls, $5 each: the pork blood soup, stewed pork soup, and each had a dry version as well. They were small - not a pho bowl size but closer to a diner cup of sup size. We ordered all four to try. The broth of the pork blood noodle bowl had a sweet/sour taste, and came with pork balls; the stewed pork was in a clearer broth We had a choice or flat rice noodles, rice noodles similar to pho noodles, and yellow egg noodles. We choose the flat noodles to start and the regular rice noodles for the others. The noodles were perfectly cooked. My friend said the two pork blood versions were too salty for her taste and we both preferred the stewed pork noodle soup. Given how hard it was to actually track down the boat noodle soup availability, what time this place actually opens, and how small the bowls were for $5, I wouldn't go out of my way to return. The rest of the menu looked like standard Americanized Thai cuisine similar to the a few of the Thai places on the same street; we did not try any of their drinks but the cocktails looked very refreshing with Thai influences. read more

As if you're no longer sitting in Elmhurst on Woodside Ave but rather in a hipster part of Brooklyn or Astoria. Dim lighting good pop/edm music. If I'm a regular at any bar, it's probably this one. Pata is cozy, funky, and a welcome spot in an area saturated with restaurants but few places to hang out afterward. I've been here a million times (I counted) after stumbling upon the strange exterior last fall. Crowdedness is totally variable and distinct from both time of day and day of week - there are often a few groups chatting from opening time at 7:30pm, but I've been here at midnight on a weekend and it's been packed with groups of happy young Thai people, masterfully imbibing egregious amounts of liquor. Other times (again at midnight on a weekend), it's been quiet. The decor is whimsical, crazy: old couches and mismatched armchairs, vintage Snoopy phones and kitschy signs along the walls, disco lights everywhere. Deconstructed motherboards in the bathroom. A cluster of stuffed animals sewn into an overhead lampshade. The music is also unpredictable, but enjoyable: sometimes Thai pop but often American '90s R&B/pop. There's a flatscreen TV on one wall and if the place is empty enough, you get free rein over the remote. They have wines and just 4 bottled beers: Singha and Chang (repping Thailand), Heineken, Corona. Try the cocktails though. I've had almost all of them at this point; they're all $10 and spectacular looking, low on subtlety and almost invariably too sweet, but come in impressively garnished glasses. The Tom Yum cocktail is by far the best: like a mojito, except add lychee puree and replace the mint with dried kaffir lime leaves. Yes, kaffir lime in a cocktail is as brilliant as it sounds. The menu of bar bites looks as interesting as the off-the-wall decor, but if you're vegetarian, forget it. Best thing: the bench along the wall has been built over a radiator, so your rear end will be nice and cozy as the temperature continues to drop. read more
