My friend had me try the kesar mango last year. It was so fragrant that a colleague, I never spoke to before, asked me where I brought the fruit since the smell reminded her of home. I mentioned where my friend brought here at the Jackson Heights location and she immediately called to see if there were anymore boxes of mangos left. There were and she picked up one of the remaining boxes. This year I decided to try and find it myself. After trying this location twice, I was able to secure the precious fruit. I couldn't find the location of the mangos. I asked an employee where I can find the mangos. He pointed at the cashier and said counter. While standing in line, I watched another employee bring a box to a second register, open it for the customer to inspect. The customer rejected the first box because it was all unripe. He brought a second box and it was mostly yellow in this one which the customer accepted. When it was my turn, I asked for a box of mangos. Same procedure: bring box, open box for decision, approve and pay. I took the box of unripe mango hoping it does goes bad quickly. This is a great supermarket if you want to check out. I got a few initial stares from other customers when I entered and walked around the store. I looked lost since I literally walked back and forth several times between the fruit and vegetable aisles until I asked the employees (first time: not available yet, second time: go to the counter). Needed some ingredients so a trip to Hicksville was in order. My daughter and I knew going in there that we were going to stick out like a sore thumb with her lavender hair, pale white skin and gray eyes and her look did not disappoint. Definitely got stared at and even followed by an employee the whole time we were there. It didn't bother me at all but she thought that the guy was following us around because he thought we were going to shoplift. We had a list and even though it took us a long time, we were able to find everything and more. It was an adventure to say the least and only one person smiled and said hello, even the cashier had a bit of a sour face on, I guess they were too busy looking at my crazy daughter to be friendly in any way. The supermarket itself was very clean and well stocked. The check out was quick and easy. It was fun for us but maybe the next time we will try the other market there. read more

The people that work there and own this establishment are very rude and they look at you like they're swearing at you and cursing you as they touch your food through the register very rude and obnoxious behavior from staff that I have seen I would not recommend to go to this place ever It's better enough to even have this kind of energy into your body. Having been to India last fall, I am thankful that there is a Patel's that is a lot closer than a 13 hour flight! All things Indian, Pakistani, some Thai and other Southeast Asian food items. I will agree with a previous reviewer that the staff does not appear particularly friendly or engaging, but that would not deter me from asking questions about a product, if I needed answers (to tell you the truth, I have asked fellow shoppers for help). No stars. I just left the Hicksville store. My first time visiting a Patel supermarket. I was excited as my sister wanted some ingredients for a dish she was cooking. for my mum, a cancer patient who fancied a special dish that called for Garam Masala. Her appetite has decreased with the chemo she is on and she is barely 100 lbs... so I wanted to do something nice for her. I was standing outside the store and all of the Indian people going in were starring daggers at me. I wasn't doing anything just speaking quietly to my sister on the phone about the ingredients. The ambience was such that I thought I was down south where I would expect that sort of behavior. I shrugged it off and entered the store. Inside was no better. People didn't want to help me and more dirty looks from customers and the employees both. It was the worst experience I've ever encountered in an Indian store. If your black, do not frequent any of their stores. Do not give them your money. They should be ashamed. read more

I love Indian food. I love it so much that I go to Patel Brothers and buy whatever I can to eat when I can't go to Apsara or Masala Wok (check my other reviews). It's usually a good place to buy Indian groceries, but the review is just for their ''fresh" Roti's. The regular wheat Roti's when they started selling were very well crafted and thin , now they have gotten very thick. I went there yesterday. They are by far the best Indian grocery store I've been to. So many items... fresh, frozen, prepared, spices, rices, etc. There was also a vast selection of incense and holders. I quickly fell into mid-eastern grocery overload. I had found my shopping zen for the day. The store was clean and had a farmers market feel to it. Amazingly low prices. I was just grabbing whatever looked good. Wasn't paying attention to the prices at all. Some stuff I've had and some that I have no idea what I'm getting into. I couldn't believe that my filled to the brim basket of stuff only came to $13 and change. Score!!! A pretty large Indian grocery store, second to Apna Bazaar in terms of size. It's very nice clear and well lit. Reasonably well stocked and I'm especially a fan of the price and selection of their veggies. They also have a large selection of eastern and middle eastern cold and frozen foods that I'm excited to try the next time I stop in. The employees all were very helpful and pleasant. I love it, I love it, I love it. I walk into that store and instantly feel like a toursit, in a good way! There is just so much to see, to smell, to taste to try out. I go here for all my spice rack needs. A garam masala spice mixture at whole foods is about $7 for a small maybe 2/3oz jar when at Patel I'm paying $4 for a baggie of it! Ditto for "rare" items like tamarind concentrate and asofeitada. Don't even get me started on the produce section. It takes every bit of my power not to run up to poor patrons and ask "OH! This is interesting looking- how would one prepareTHIS?!" like some sort of geek through all 3 aisles. The rice and dried beans aisles are extremely econimically priced and this is where I'll come for most dried lentils. But the most facinating aisle is the pickles/sauces/curries/ghee/oils. What do I do with all of these items? Ditto for the sauces from the packages (just add milk- ahh sodium!!). Doesn't make them any less interesting. Mostly I find people ignore me in there. Which is fine I guess but sometimes I really want to ask a question (like- ghee, would you use it like butter? How about Paneer, do you only cook it or eat it with crackers?) so I have to rely on my prehistoric busted blackberry to pull up the google answer to my inane incessant questions (for the record-melted yes and fresh paneer with a pinch of salt). Most recent (and odd) purchases are including but not limited to the following: a marble mortar and pestle, sesame candy, urad daal, mango pickle, tikka masala sauce, curry paste, various spices, 2 collanders, paneer, tamarind, and the ever essential naan. read more

I can't begin to go over the depth of their selection when iy comes to fresh vegetables, dried lentils, nuts, rice, pickles, ghee... you name it & they've got it! I'm still new to cooking indian food, so they have a nice selection of prepared sauces that simplify the cooking process. When you find something that causes you to wake up shuddering in the middle of the night, mouth watering in deep crave mode, it's a nice feeling knowing that its readily available here. When you're feeling brave enough to start preparing sauces & currys on your own, Patel's has a selection of regional cookbooks, as well as the ingredients to start cooking like a pro. (Who could LIVE without pander?). The fruits and vegetables are pretty good and the infinite variety of spices will keep you from dying of boredom. There are now a variety of frozen products, including samosas, frozen dinners, breads and desserts which are very good and mostly locally made. not having been to this location for a while i drove to patel brothers in need of some coconuts and okra and was shocked. i saw a huge coin-op laundromat. maybe i'm in the wrong place? but the lutheran church is still here and so is the tire shop. it then dawned on me, now i know the economy is bad! if patel brothers went out of business, that is badder than bad! i promptly drove down to rangmahal and asked them about it. arun howled and said, "out of business? are you joking, they moved down the street to a brand new even bigger store. they own this big shopping complex down the street now!" this new location is huge! its gotta big the biggest patel brothers in new york and new jersey. bigger or not, it remains the only place in long island for one stop shopping of all the indian groceries and spices you need to prepare your curry at home. read more
