I really wanted to like this place. The service was mediocre, but the food was awful! I'm not even sure it could be called barbecue. No smoke rings on the extremely bland brisket (I've had better at a school cafeteria), the pork was like eating small wood chips soaked in water, and all of it was covered with a strange gravy/bbq sauce hybrid. The pork ribs were tough and almost impossible to eat around the gelatinous cartilage that was the 'rib'. The boudain was the best of the lot, but still bland with a plastic-like skin. Today was my first visit to the famous Patillo's. I can honestly say I am going to pay for that meal for days. The potato salad was really good, slightly sweet with a good grainy texture. Not like the pre-made potato salads most places use. The beans were fairly decent and the dirty rice was okay. My plate came and I was so excited to try what everyone raves about! I was seriously disappointed. The links they are famous for were so dry I couldn't cut the casing and the "sausage" fell out like fine ground beef into the pool of grease. I have nothing against fat and grease, fat equals flavor, but this was over the top. I did especially like the foot long thick string that came attached to the link. That was very appetizing. I attempted to eat some to try the flavor and just couldn't. The beef, no matter what cut of beef they use, brisket, shoulder, flap, it should NEVER look like it did. The two pieces that I had on my plate were paper thin and cut with the grain. The rest of my beef was chopped within an inch of it's life and swimming in sauce and grease. For the price I expected at least three or four full pieces, not chopped beef. I really wish I could have written a better review. I will keep an eye on yelp and my ear to the ground to see if things have improved. I always like to support my local places! read more

Pretty disappointing for me. Others may disagree because it has a unique style. Ribs were the best of the bunch. Brisket was pretty weak and sausage was not too special. Probably the worst barbecue have ever had!!! The sauce was tasteless and watery. The brisket was drowning in some kind of juice, more like a pot roast than barbecue. Chicken was dry and lacking of flavor. The sausage was more grease than meat. Way too expensive for awful food. Service was "okay" but not a deal breaker. It deserves the two stars because of the poor quality of the food. Pork was pretty flavorless as well as the boudain. Also, the sauce was not very good and definitely not worth $1.00 for an extra side. The choices for sides were not very good either. Sometimes places are ready for an overhaul; Jack Patillo's is one of those places. Bar-B-Q establishments are known to be a little unkempt, but this place could use a thorough washing. If they shut down for one day, the entire staff, cleaning top to bottom, once a month, it would be such an improvement. The wait staff was friendly enough, not overly attentive, but not rude. The glass of tea was refilled in a timely manner and we were asked if there was anything else we needed. The meals came with a plate of bread. The bread from the table next to ours was removed. It was taken in the back. It was brought out to our table. We did not eat the bread. The ribs had hardly any meat on them. There were three times where there were only bones, no meat, on the order of ribs that were sold to us. The potato salad does not contain pickle relish, however, it comes with two pickles on top and a slice of onion. This we found a bit odd. The color of the potato salad was a salmon color, a pinkish orange. That too seemed odd. All in all though, it was one of the better sides. Bland, with only a slight vinegar sharpness to it, but again, the best of what they had to offer. The jambalaya rice was hardly edible. It tasted more like cheese and we were left to wonder what exactly was in it. The color, texture and flavor were unlike anything to be expected, yet again, an odd flavor. All of my relatives have lived in Louisiana for generations, so dirty rice and jambalaya are easily staples. This was neither dirty rice nor jambalaya. It was nothing special and in a way, made one feel uneasy as to its preparation. The beans were okay. They did not have a sauce like bbq beans often do. They are not advertised as bbq beans, so if you are expecting slow roasted, seasoned, and sauced beans, you will be disappointed. These are more akin to red beans without the gravy that is necessary for a good red beans and rice. They are very plain, but somewhat edible. The bbq chicken turned my stomach. It appeared to be the lowest grade meat that can be found. There is hardly any sauce and the sauce has no flavor. The meat is greasy. You'd have better bbq if you went to a grocery store, bought a rotisserie chicken, bought your favorite bbq sauce, placed the chicken in a baking dish, threw on your sauce, and baked on low for 15 minutes. Seriously, Jack Patillo's is the worst bbq I've ever had. The cooks in the back did not seem happy. They seemed like they didn't like all that they were having to do and it seemed as if there was a bit of an upset about the amount of work that each person, wait staff versus the cooks, were expected to do. I would never recommend this place to anyone, nor will I dine there again. read more

I grew up eating Patillo's, and yes, the rib sandwich is indeed actual pork ribs on soft white sandwich bread, but they cut them small and the large bones are not included. You kind of just have to chew around the cartilage. The sauce is not your run-of-the-mill tomato and sugar based sauces. It's vinegary, it's peppery - it's not Kraft from a bottle. It's a gravy style of BBQ sauce, and you love it or you hate it - and I LOVE it. I only get the links and the ribs when I visit, so I can't say anything about the rest of the meats. It's a "hole in the wall" kind of place, so don't go there if you're looking for anything fancy, and the service if very laid back and casual. I ordered a link sandwich and it must have been the worst I've ever had. Not only was the link excessively microwaved, but the bread was soggy and that was without any sauce. I grew up in Beaumont, and remember Patillo's, down on Railroad Ave. The big fat fella was pit master and the links were two-bits.
