This review is for the "Mommy/Daddy and Me Session #1" which was held at the Downey High School Aquatics Center. The class was Monday - Friday, July 6 - July 17, 2015 from 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. for a total of 10 sessions. Fees for residents were $55 per child and $59 for non-residents. That's basically $5.50 per class. Children were required to be older than 6-months-old but younger than 4-years-old to get in the class. To sign up, I had to enroll both of our daughters in person because their birth certificates had to be presented. This was fine since I didn't care to pay the convenience fee that applies to all online registrations. Class summary: "This class is designed to orient children to the water where they will begin to learn basic safety skills, breath control, floating, kicking and paddling. Parent or guardian must participate in the water with the child. Up to two adults per child permitted in the water." Additionally, the kiddos used life jackets, paddle boards, and squirting toys in the pool. We gathered in a circle and sang songs every once in a while. Let the kiddos sit on the wall above the pool and let them jump in "Humpty Dumpty-style." We also submerged our children's heads which I didn't think our own children would like, but they saw the older kids going (quickly) under water and did just fine. Our class started out with 15 babies/toddlers in the pool with as many or more parents. On the final day, not even half that many showed up. I think this was a bit disheartening for our instructor. Speaking of our instructor, Marissa, was great! She deserves 5 stars in her own right. She was attentive to our needs. Very courteous. Flexible - like when our youngest didn't like the life jacket she said it was fine to take it off and try something else. Nice young lady. What I liked most about Marissa, though, was she was aware of everyone in the pool around us - meaning the other classes and the kids who decided to run on the concrete just beyond the pool. Oh, and she was the only instructor who said anything to this kid who was climbing up the pole right where the canopies were. She gave a certificate of merit & a lollipop to each child after our final class. Stuff like that means all the world even to a 2-year-old. My family of four enjoyed the class. Any longer and our babies would not have handled it well. The half hour session was perfect. It was fairly chilly in the water on days that were a high of about 75 degrees Fahrenheit with a breeze. Otherwise when the temperature reached at least 90 it was nice. I'm not too privy on pool maintenance, but I don't believe it was heated. Also, I'm almost certain it is cleaned with a salt system. The reason for 3 stars is simple: The bathrooms and locker area were pretty disgusting most of the time. It's an outdoor facility, so I expected it to be mildly dirty with footprints and water splashed about. But most days the toilets were gross and the sinks and countertops were scattered with hair. Toilet paper was strung out & the bathroom stall trash cans were overflowing. Puddles of water were in various places and all along the tile where the walls met the floor. My husband said it was gross in the men's area too. I support my community no matter what, but I also know that City of Downey and Downey High Aquatics Center can do better than this. I've seen it done countless times at other places - much lesser towns than Downey. Parking can be a B to the i-t-c-h, but there's no need to drive like an ass over it - especially since high school students may be driving there too. Parking is a bit of a hike-- on weekends, there is free public parking behind the city hall and library area. Posted times are not in force on weekends and holidays. They're friendly, helpful, and are a big part of why I continue coming back. I've even recommended this facility to several friends and family members because, overall, it's a great place to bring kids and spend the day. Unfortunately, one employee continues to ruin what should be an enjoyable experience every time I visit. No matter how polite I am, she approaches me or others with an attitude, speaks in a disrespectful tone, and seems more interested in arguing than helping guests. If you're the first person greeting people as they walk in, customer service should be a priority. A smile and respectful communication go a long way. The most frustrating part is that I know the facility's dress code. I even bring extra swim shorts for children who come with me in case their parents forget proper swim attire. During my most recent visit, she insisted my swim shorts were gym shorts, even after I repeatedly explained they were purchased from the swimwear section specifically for this pool. On my very first visit, I had already spoken with the manager about these exact shorts, and he came to the understanding they were swimwear. I purposely buy longer swim shorts because I prefer more coverage around children at a public pool--not because I'm trying to break the rules. And they sell thousands of types of swimwear just because I don't buy a cheap skimpy bottom and have my buttcheeks out don't make my swim shorts NOT swim shorts . Why would they be in the swim section if they weren't? they wouldn't be . I have a few gym shorts that look like swim shorts but I don't wear those because they're NOT swim shorts and they weren't purchased from the swim section What made the situation even more frustrating was watching several other guests wearing cotton shorts walk right in without anyone saying a word, while I was the one being questioned despite wearing actual swimwear. I've also seen children in the pool wearing cotton T-shirts that are clearly not intended for swimming, but I keep my mouth shut because it's not my place to police other guests. If I wanted to nitpick and point out every rule violation I saw, I easily could--but I don't. That's why it was so frustrating to feel like I was being singled out over something that had already been addressed with management. If the rules are going to be enforced, they should be enforced fairly and consistently for everyone--not selectively. This also wasn't my first negative interaction with this employee. During a previous visit, she took my young niece out of the pool and started walking toward the front entrance with her without ever informing me what was happening. I was right there, calling out to her, but instead of stopping to explain what she was doing, she kept walking. Only after I got her attention did she finally turn around and tell me she was taking my niece to have her height checked again. As the adult responsible for my niece, I found that extremely upsetting. A child should never be taken away from the pool area without first communicating with the adult supervising them. I immediately spoke with the manager because I didn't think that was appropriate. He tried to make the situation right by asking her to apologize/ explain, but before she even came over,( I observe everything face expressions to body language to what even was said to see if I'm taken seriously ) I overheard her laughing and giggling as if the entire situation was a joke. She acted like she couldn't believe she even had to apologize. When she finally did, it didn't feel sincere at all. Ever since that day, every interaction I've had with her has been just as unprofessional. To make matters worse, after my most recent interaction, I asked the manager for the employee's name so I could address my complaint appropriately. He refused to provide it, which was disappointing. It made me feel like management was more interested in protecting the employee than addressing a legitimate concern from a guest. Because of that, I have no choice but to leave my feedback about the facility as a whole instead of the individual responsible. I've only been coming here for about a month, but in that short amount of time I've brought several friends and family members because I genuinely thought this was a wonderful place. The facility itself is great, and the majority of the staff are fantastic. That's exactly why this experience has been so disappointing. One employee's repeated attitude, lack of professionalism, and inconsistent treatment of guests shouldn't outweigh all the positive things this facility has to offer. I sincerely hope management takes this feedback seriously. Better training, accountability, and professionalism would go a long way. Guests deserve to be treated with respect, and rules should be applied fairly and consistently to everyone.

Not situated in the best neighborhoods in town. 1.5 softball/baseball fields…read more The park is situated right next to a noisy gas factory (the humming sound from the factory went on all day). There's street parking but watch out for the fly balls. Some trees for shades. Dirty and nasty bathrooms. The fields are pretty much dirty fields. :( Luckily there's a YMCA next door which brightens up Maywood Park a bit. Not such a good park. Neighbor's sketchy as well.

They offer many activities for all ages, they have a gym available for the community, and they have a head start for children ages 3-5 with a capacity of 20 children. The reason why I come here is to enjoy some alone time. In the mornings you will see people walking/jogging around the park. In the afternoons you'll have kids with their parents in the playground and sometimes in the evenings you'll see some softball games.

It's $40 for 4 class (1 session) and the kids get to make good food. It's only 45-60 minutes long once a week so it doesn't take much time. The instructor is wonderful and does well with the kids. This is next to Apollo Park so there is a playground and plenty of room for kids to play. Bathrooms inside and clean. Drinking fountains. A big parking lot. A library. Much more!

It turns out the instructor is teaching Salsa- and that ok but it was very advanced. He paid no attention to the 1/3 of the class that could not keep up his speedy instructions. Obviously he would be aware some of us were new. Waste of time. Talk to the insturctor about this- not everyone is a salsa dancer that wants to take up more salsa lessons . Ridiculous.
