We had to stay here while our house was being tented for termites. We tried to set up an AirBnB, but had an issue with the potential host and then checked out Patriots. Glad we did and we have recommended to others visiting our great town. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and helpful. The Wife and I rented the suite and that was fun. We had a kitchenette, so that we could save some money cooking for ourselves as we awaited the $3K tenting of our home. Unfortunately, we could not bring the doggo to the suite, but other rooms there you can bring dogs. Not sure why and perhaps I asked, but forget if I found out. Anyway, the dog was just as happy staying at our neighborly dog sitter's house that she loves to visit and hang out with our neighbor. She probably is more spoiled there, so does not mind us dropping her off. The suite is clean and nicely kept. It is not the Ritz, so limited services and such, but it fit what we needed perfectly. We parked our golf cart in the reserved parking spot and pretended we were on vacation in San Clemente for a couple of days. I guess that is a staycation and we nailed it. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was adequate and clean. There was a fan, AC unit and heater. We only needed the fan. We used the private outdoor seating area and even lit up a fire one night as they leave you wood for the fire pit. My Eagle Scout flex was lacking, as it took be a bit of time to get that fire pit raging with only a newspaper and pizza box. No kindling, just pretty good size logs. But, my persistence paid off and we had a great evening sitting by the fire. The one thing that was not great was the opened food that was in the cabinet. Potato chips, marshmellows and some other snacks. It wouldl have been better for those things to be cleared before we checked in. But that was my only complaint. Again, I recommend the Patriot, and the staff, if you need to get your house tented or if you have friends and family visiting our cool little town. Go. Sleep Well! HAVE FUN!! read more

First of all the TV kept shutting off about every three minutes. When i brought it to the attention of management she basically said "oh well" and offered no real solution except to unplug it when it happened again. i did this but it didnt correct the problem. Very disappointing. Another improvement could be a bed frame that actually fits the mattress and doesn't stick out. The room is overpriced for what you get. i don't like leaving negative reviews but i just couldn't keep quiet on this one. Update: Management came back about an hour later and offered us another room. Much better. The TV works and the bed frame fits the mattress. Nicer room. read more

We spent three nights there and loved every minute of our stay! Room 16 was cute, clean and perfect for a girls getaway. The beds were comfy and pillows were too. We spent one entire afternoon playing cards in the beautiful courtyard (which has a fire pit, BBQ, cornhole set up, picnic tables w/umbrellas and lots of greenery, flowers and bird feeders). We walked to dinner on Del Mar and to the pier for amazing sunsets. The Bagel Shack is right next door for morning coffee and breakfast (which was delish!). There's a grocery store and gas station on the same block too. Not only was it reasonably priced, but the staff was exceptional! Tony, Kate and Jen were so accommodating even providing a coffee pot (not standard in the room) but also a corkscrew and great attitudes and smiles. This place won't be for everyone. It is a small (16 room) old motel. Paint looked fairly fresh, room seemed clean. Our room had some odor issues, but not enough to complain about. The staff were very nice and accommodating. The price was very reasonable for the area. If you want to be in a newer residents inn type of property you'll pay at least $100 more a night. It had a small refrigerator, a microwave, air conditioning and an okay bed. There was an outdoor sitting area with a bbq. For what we paid it did the trick for us. read more

Hotel: Still have back pain from these beds .. yikes. There is no smart TV which really sucks.. Just cable. No proper soap or hair care for showering or bathing - The room itself is very run down, thrown together, and def gives a "MOTEL" vibe, For this price it was pretty seedy but, make the best of it! We bought bug spray and traps our first night just to be sAfe, thank goodness we did! More unfortunately... 2 days in to our stay, We had to call the Sheriffs department after the owner harassed and threatened my 80 year old grandmother who is disabled . She charged her an extra $85 for a SERVICE ANIMAL :( I would not recommend staying here. Karen , the Owner, was terribly rude, made belittling comments when I tried explaining some disabilities are not always glaringly "visible" - Not everyone has an amputee leg or a sign on their forehead with cancer written on it... this has been a devastating reoccurring thing that I think needs to be talked about a lot more. Discrimination like this is truly hurtful. Karen said she was very aware about Invisible Illnesses and disabilities, and suggested we leave that day. Even though we had Already paid for 3 additional days. I think it's important to treat people equally and at the very least show kindness when someone is clearly in a great deal of pain. Karen broke several laws under the Federal Disabilities Act - It's truly unfortunate as I really liked the property but between the drug use and the horrendous treatment, I would not recommend. Nomads, Rodway Inn, Casa Romantica - all VERY. Amazing!!! Kind friendly and amazing rooms - The Sheriffs are so wonderful, I simply wanted them to educate this Buisness owner so others would not have to go through something like this again. It's truly traumatic. SC PD is wonderful, and privy to this kind of prejudice, for that I am thankful. To discriminate and take advantage of elderly with mental health and physical disabilities is just gross. The kind officers assured us Karen would no Longer be a problem and to enjoy my reunion with my grandmother. We did our best. read more

Very Dog friendly ( slight up charge) directly next door (50 steps) to a fabulous coffee and bagel place. Quiet enough. Friendly staff. Extra ( very nice) towels on request. My dog bolted and the staff helped me chase him and prevent him from getting creamed, risking life and limb. It is on a very busy street. Leash your animal if your door is open. Ask me how I know. Hot water, clean bathrooms . Great location and safe well lit free parking A few cons- sheets are crispy made-in-China-cotton/ poly blend, the worst. Bring your own toiletries as the ones they provide are better than nothing, better than motel 6, I am picky, so I always bring my own. No facial tissue . Very 1970-80s. I loved our lamp, looked like coral. . I may try to buy it. I would stay here again. The congeniality of the staff and price make this a no brainer. Great place to stay in the heart of San Clemente on a budget. My sister and I spent three nights in this charming, friendly, and clean little boutique motel. The ambience is very laidback and the staff is so helpful and kind. We walked to everything and took the free San Clemente trolley to the outlets and the pier. Right next door is the Bagel Shack with excellent coffee! Ralph's is a block away. The only "not great" was the water pressure in the shower. However, this time, as we were getting ready to check out, the clerk came up to me, broom in hand, and said they had found a lot of sand in the room the day before when they cleaned the room. I apologized, puzzled, because this is a beach hotel and there is sand... everywhere. She said that's okay, but if it's the same way today, I want you to sweep it all up. So I will start by saying, if you are looking for a new fancy room, go somewhere else. This is a much older motel that is pretty small. There are only about a dozen and a half room and there is one suite upstairs with a private patio. The rooms seem to have been freshly painted, but like I said, it is old. We just wanted a place to crash for the night, and there were actually a few bonuses for the price. It was probably one of the better priced places in the area. It is only a few blocks from the beach. Its probably 10 minutes on foot. There are lots of amenities close by. Starbuck, bagel shack, ralph's grocery, a taco shop, and several other places very close by, The big plus for us here was the ladies working while we stayed: Kate and Jen. They were both so nice and helpful. They were super positive and happy which I as sure is part of the reason this plays stays in business. Thanks for the hospitality. Perfect for our needs! Brought my little senior dog into the area for surgery and wanted to stay the night after. This was perfect for us. Jennifer and Tony were very accommodating and I think they may have upgraded my room (bed seemed like a king rather than the queen we booked). Jennifer provided a pet sheet that I could use on the bed for my doggy and was generous with her willingness to accommodate and provide anything we might need. We felt very welcomed. I wasn't looking for something super fancy, I just wanted clean with a familiar small town beach feeling. Got it! I would not recommend this location if you are traveling for work or will spend much time in your room. Outlets are not really accessible, not sure f they even have cable or a secure internet connection. I only used my computer to double check directions back and I watched the news while having coffee and looking at the ocean horizon outside my window (room 14). The room was a good size and included a cafe table with chairs that was very helpful for me. Coffee makers are upon request, but I just brought my spare (it was just easy for me). The small fridge has an itty bitty freezer and there is a Ralph's Fresh grocery store within about 2 blocks that was helpful for me. The bathroom had some rusty pieces and could use some caulk, but I found that the overall cleanliness was great. I walked around the room in new light grey socks and they stayed clean. :) It is perfect if you are looking for an affordable option for a surf trip and local eats, or if you are traveling to outdoor activities with your pet...it is in walking, trotting or jogging distance to the beach where you will also find a "Fisherman's Wharf" restaurant (that is open at 8:00am) and a dog friendly, jog friendly trail right on the beach. :) P.S. I saw that someone had posted a bad review complaining that they were not allowed to leave their dog in a room alone while they attended an event. I just have to say that I have traveled around to quite a fair number of motels with my pets and I have not ever seen a motel or hotel allow guests to leave pets unattended. Cons: Conveniently located across the street from a funeral parlor do not bring your dog here unless you are prepared to never leave them alone in the room. Failure to tell us this after we went through the whole song and dance explaining our situation in full ,in advance ,that we could not leave our dog in this pet friendly motel during the wedding we drove up to attend two towns away was truly deceitful. The entire point was to have peace of mind. When I said It would have been better to tell us this before reserving and paying the $50 pet fee the reply was "  We usually do ". We Usually Do does not constitute customer service or regret for the inconvenience. For the money we could have left the dog at home and paid a dog sitter. The Patriots response: "  Why don't you google a pet sitter in the area? "  Say what? Pay another $75 to have an unvetted sitter more money to dog sit in our motel room? How about The Patriot Boutique Motel with toilet seats so low only an 8 year old would be comfortable or the dirt under the sink refund us $50 for misleading us. Really not amused. Unsafe. A sliding glass door which could not be locked from the inside was the only door to the suite. We paid extra for a suite. The window could not be locked, because they had a vent pipe to the stand alone AC unit going through the window. The woman at the front desk refused to give us a refund. We stayed somewhere else where we could lock the door and window at night. Ridiculous and dangerous. Seriously, with the $251 you charged us for a room that no one will stay in, you can afford a lock for the door. As for the window... why would you have windows that can't be shut all the way and locked in a first floor room of a motel!! They call it a boutique motel. It's not. It's a roadside motel. False advertising. Bait and switch. They remove all negative reviews, so it looks like this is a highly rated hotel. It's not. There is nothing boutique about it. Several months ago I received an email informing me of a Groupon for a 2 night stay at the Patriots Boutique Motel for $90. I quickly went to Yelp and read the reviews for this place and saw they were all outstanding. I figured I could not go wrong with $45 a night stay which happens to be walking distance to surfing spots at the T-Street & the San Clemente Pier so I made the purchase, I am so glad I did. I arrived and was met by 'Kate' the manager of the PBM (Patriots Boutique Motel) who was awaiting my arrival. From the moment I arrived / checked in on the property until the moment I left / checked out I was treated like part of the family. The relaxed beach vibe of San Clemente definitely passes on to the relaxed vibe of the PBM. The PBM has its own parking lot; you are able to park your vehicle literally right outside of the door to your room. This made a big difference to me as a surfer who had quite a few things to carry to my room. Kate made the check in progress easy & smooth. I was given my key and took a look for the first time at my room. I was shocked at how big the rooms are here. The rooms are spotless, not only are they clean but they smell clean. I had a large king bed, a flat screen 'LG' TV that I was able to hook my laptop up to via an HDMI cable and watch House of Cards season II start to finish=) I had a mini fridge, a microwave, a heater, a fan, an air-conditioning unit, a large bathroom, closet and several other amenities including high speed 'free' Wi-Fi. I found the bed to be extremely comfortable, the rooms to be quiet, relaxing & refreshing. The staff here at the PBM is simply amazing. As for the grounds of the PBM I found them to be amazing. Kate is working her magic and doing amazing things with the landscaping. The PBM has a fire pit area which also acts as the smoking area for the guests of hotel. The fire pit area is separated from the hotel as to not bother guests with the smell of smoke. The PBM is located within walking distance of downtown San Clemente and most importantly to me 'the Ocean / Beach.' The PBM is located with 5 miles of a Costco, a few blocks away from a Ralph's, right across the street from a KFC, several blocks away from many more takeout or sit down restaurants and outdoor cafes. I could have easily spent a week here without skipping a beat. There is zero question that the next time I plan a surfari the first place I will be looking to stay is the PBM groupon or not. The PBM is simply a gem not only for San Clemente but for Southern California. I am already ready to come back here=) read more

An annoying, dripping shower head that I could clearly hear from the bedroom, even with the bathroom door closed. 2. The heating system. That might have just been my failure in figuring out how to use it though. I put it on low heat, which was cool air. Stepped it up a notch, just got slightly less cool air. It wasn't really an issue since it wasn't that cold, but had I been there on a somewhat cooler evening, it might have been.. The one star is for the location, super nice staff and the clean white sheets. Here is a list of why there are missing stars. Understandably this is a cheaper motel, however, the pictures are misleading. There is no ocean view as shown on their pictures and when you ask how close the beach is they say walking distance. True, if your okay with a 30 minute walk down a steep hill which means, 40+ minute walk up hill. Forget about bringing anything with you. The night we stayed, apparently the person next to us was smoking in the room. The person said it wasn't her, just one of the many guys visiting her that night... all night long. The office person had to threaten to call the cops because they were breaking the rule of smoking and did not have a visa deposit. Yes we heard everything. Partly due to the super thin walls and the other part because the window had to stay open 6" so the portable ac had a vent. Unfortunately, the vent only covered half the window so the other half was left ipen Nice touch! Not to be nit picky but I have to mention this last bit. The fixtures in the bathroom were old and corroded giving off the feeling of dirty. The water would go from hot to cold and hot again throughout your shower. I'm assuming for the price it may be fine. read more

This motel is great little beach motel however it is a couple miles from the beach. There is a sneak peak of the ocean from the site and my room. I love the manager Kate. Very friendly and knowledgeable. The motel is newly remodeled, however it is still old style motel. I stayed in room #5. The king size bed is extremely comfortable and room nice. The shower was very large and I didn't like waiting several minutes for the hot water to come through. It was a large amount of waste of water before it warmed up. Even though the coffee area is sitting outside next to the very small office, I loved to smell it brewing first thing in the morning. It was very quiet area although the motel is on a busy Blvd. It has character and it is a safe place (: I wish I could of stayed longer! I would stay here again and recommend it highly (: read more

We were in town for a wedding, and chose to stay the night instead of a long drive back home after the reception. This place is a small and cute (hence marketed as a "Boutique") motel. Clean, quiet, and quaint room, but the bed... lumpy (could even hear springs squeak with movement), and the floor in the bathroom was slightly uneven (probably from past repairs). Speaking of repairs -- there was a printed (computer) warning to not use the window blind stating the need for repair (guest privacy issues if unable to use). Repair would probably take the same amount of time and effort, as printing and posting the notice (thanks to Hotel Impossible for the education). Otherwise, their recommendation regarding the bagelry next door was spot on. Recommended for a quick and clean stay, with excellent bagels next door, this location fits the bill. Just don't expect a lot of sleep comfort, unless there's a mattress upgrade is in their future. read more

Spent Saturday n Sunday at this little gem. We had the King Suite and it was just as cute as could be with an Ocean view right on El Camino Real. The king suite comes with a small kitchenette and a private patio n BBQ grill with a fire pit. Nicely decorated and very comfortable. I'd highly recommend this little motel which is conveniently located next to a grocery store, local bars and walking distance to San Clemente pier. read more

This establishment doesn't even deserve one star. My mom & I had this weekend planned for quite some time. We checked in, the room was very poorly cleaned or not even cleaned at all- the walls had chunky food and black dirt on them. Really gross. We noticed immediately the walls are paper thin so you can literally hear any conversations happening in the rooms next to you. I mean, word for word. After a nice dinner, my mom & I returned to our room and got into bed (around 8pm) However, the couple next to us were fighting, cussing, & yelling all night until around 3am. It kept us up the entire night. I woke up at 7am to more profanity & yelling. The office didn't open until 9am, so I had to wait to complain & request another room. Finally , 9am rolls around and my mom & I walk over & the owner explains how she can't control people and we are stuck in our room. No help or compassion whatsoever. Then literally 5 mins later, we hear her knock on the door and tell the people we complained?! My mom calls & and asked her why she thought that was appropriate & professional while we are still in the room and that we didn't want conflict. The owner laughed at us, said we were the problem, and asked us what does it matter? She asked us what is the problem? We explained that it made us uncomfortable and she should've waited until we left. The owner began to become hostile & very aggressive. She was literally pointing in my face and yelling. I'm beside myself for her behavior. We checked out one night early, and she told me to have fun with my "Yelp review". She didn't seem to care at all about the impact of her behavior. Also, considering we are in a pandemic, she didn't wear a mask while being irate and it was disturbing to think of her saliva hitting my mask while yelling at me for no reason. Then continued mock me and wave goodbye. Why was this necessary? All because we got zero sleep and mentioned the noise? That's very unfair considering we are both the ones who paid to stay there. And, I definitely do not recommend for absolutely anyone to stay there, like ever. read more

My family of 7 stayed the night in 3 separate rooms. All rooms slightly different. I suggest owners invested in some serious clean up and renovation. Our biggest complaint is smell and dirty stain. Room that my son and his family took, smelled bad and the toilet was NOT cleaned upon arrival. Room had a stale smell from the restroom that overwhelmed the entire room and we bought some febreeze that didn't help much. Later we discovered an open pipe under the bathroom sink that we assume led the smell into room. We also went out for the day and came back to a brown stain on the bed comforter. This is not a few spots but a large round minimum 8 inch stain. Front desk said was bleach stains and even tried saying it was the baby. However, we were out all day as a family. And, if you don't do laundry, bleach leaves white not brown stains. Was not compensated. As for my sisters room, it also smelled funny. She as well complained of it being dirty. The room me and my daughter shared, had tiny bugs (mites?) at the bathroom sink. Our bed was uncomfortable and we noticed it was propped up by a towel to keep it level. In addition, the floor was over heated due to pipes close to tile floor as explained by front desk & turn on two AC units to keep room cool. The funny smell was also noticed at our shower. Besides smell, all family members agreed that parking is not convenient. It fills up quick by night and is not convenient if you had a long day & have family and bags to tote. Me and my family suggest invest in a clean place that will allow you some rest and piece of mind during your vacation. read more

Very well located - easy short walk to the main drag with all of the downtown San Clemente restaurants and shops and Sunday Farmers Market, a wonderful local coffee shop, also right next to a bagel shop and an upscale Ralph's supermarket with a full service deli. About a 10-15 min leisurely walk to the beach. Comfortable rooms - very comfortable beds, linens and pillows - we slept very well there. Mini fridge and microwave in the room - great for leftovers. Flat screen tv with cable, wifi worked fast and is free. Another plus is that the shower had high water pressure and plenty of hot water. Owners were very pleasant, helpful and accommodating. I've stayed at several San Clemente motels/hotels and found this one to be a terrific value. read more

We showed uo at 9pm on a Friday to find expedia had cancelled our reservation without telling us....the woman at the front desk (who surely had better things to do on her off time) was so kind and helpful. She called around to orher hotels and found us a room for the night there and re-booked us at Patriots the following night. I wonder if they have ever stayed in a beach motel that goes for that low price in a very popular California destination because if they did they would realize this is a GEM. The shower, bathroom (large enough to be a bedroom) and main room were impeccably clean. Hot water. The air conditioner was strong how I prefer. I was very happy they had cable channels -- I did not have to run back to LA to watch Breaking Bad. The owners are on the small property and are a beautiful and charming American couple. VERY rare. We went here for our honeymoon in July, 2013 and it was the perfect place for us. We're pretty low key so it was exactly what we wanted. Super friendly staff, a breakfast coupon, everything was clean, mile walk from the beach, no extra "fees" for ridiculous things, and right next to a Ralphs so we could get some groceries for in the room. If you're looking for a high-class place, go elsewhere. But if you enjoy walking, you 100% get what you pay for. read more

The Patriots Boutique Motel is a gem to find at the beach. An ideal location for groceries (as stores are only a walk away), the bagel shack next door is wonderful to grab a bite before heading off to stroll the main street shops, or walk the beach. Having a mini fridge and microwave saves a bunch on the budget and a welcome bonus. While coffee is not in the room, outside of the motel office a fresh pot is brewed and refreshed often in the morning. The room is comfortable, clean, and contains a larger than most bathrooms. The flat screen TV and basic cable kept me aware of the weather and local news, before heading out to the beach. We needed an ironing board and iron, and upon contacting the front desk was brought one. Kudos. Though I did not have a chance to enjoy the outdoor fire pit or BBQ, I did enjoy the lounge chairs to sip coffee and watch traffic pass by. The front desk and cleaning staff were very friendly, and when not in the office, a buzz of the button or call would have someone promptly arrive to tend to questions or concerns. Going to the Pier, is a brief 5 minute drive, downhill. So if motivated to walk be prepared for a walk back up, which I chose not to do, lugging a few surfboards, and beach items.
