It's small, but they fit an excellent selection in the space. Their prices are very fair, and they actually sell some products I haven't seen around elsewhere. The main thing that keeps me coming back is their customer service. I've tried some other wine shops in Hattiesburg, but their snooty vibes unless I'm spending 3 digits put me off. The folks at Cork & Barrel are always kind, helpful, and happy to have your business no matter your budget for the day. I feel this shop is a true hidden gem, but I don't mind getting the word out for such nice folks!

They were good, just seemed to employ shortcuts. For heavier apps we ordered the baby lamb chops... I make lamb chops at home and they're amazing; when dining out it's always hit or miss. There's a fat that lamb has that if not trimmed off it gives off a very off-putting flavor. These had that flavor and I was so disappointed. And if you see my pic of the dish, I'm not sure what was happening with the sauce sloshed all over the rim of the dish. On another note, my hubs ordered oysters and said were delish. Moving on... I chose trout topped with lump crab which was on par with other places I've had it. And we also ordered wine, which I'll note for anyone interested that the bottles are priced exactly double than if you buy it at the store. I expect there to be a mark up, but just know what to expect. Combined, it was a delightful meal in a beautiful setting with a menu and presentation that like feels they strive to keep old school finer dining alive and overall we enjoyed experiencing it even with the minor downsides of some of the dishes we had. They usually have only one band, there are several smaller sub-krewes and they offer lots of handmade throws, mostly adhering to the theme of Wine. The Krewe of Cork is made up of a variety of wine professionals, distributors, importers, restaurant owners, and the like. This parade rolls on the Friday of the first big weekend of Carnival (10 day before Mardi Gras) and starts with a luncheon at the Court of Two Sisters. If you happen to be in the French Quarter that day I can heartily recommend checking this tiny parade out.

The building reminded me more of what I would encounter in northern Sonoma, to the west of Healdsburg, or further south in the Paso Robles region. The tasting room is a decent size, although as I was the only visitor at the time, it seemed quite large. Quite a different experience from trying to enter on a Saturday night of a Jazz'n in the Vines concert. There is a patio terrace next to the building which overlooks the vineyard. Since it was a blazing hot June afternoon, I stayed inside rather than sit on the patio. There were seven wines to taste for a modest $5 fee. Four were from sourced grapes (California), two were American/French hybrids grown on the estate and the final was from a native American cultivar, also grown on the estate. All vintages were between 2005 & 2007, except for the recently released Syrah/Cabernet blend which is a 2009. I liked the Roux Saint Louis (a white wine based on the Blanc du Bois grape) as a nice summer wine. The Rouge Militaire is based on the American Cynthiana/Norton (a native red grape). It's a heavier red wine, and still needs a little time to open up. John Seago, the winemaker is often behind the bar, in the tasting room, but was out working the fields on this trip.

There was ample room on the lawn for everyone to have their picnic set up and still have enough room to move around. A food truck was on site for quick bites and of course there was wine available. I asked for something light white and not sweet and was told to try Le Trolley. This wine did not disappoint. It tasted like Sauvignon Blanc and I was pleased to learn that it is one of the wines made from the locally grown grapes. I am looking forward to returning child free so my husband and I can do a tasting and enjoy the scenery.

For our entrées, my wife ordered the Chicken Molli while I chose the Pork Cheek Marsala. Both dishes were phenomenal. Unfortunately, we didn't save room for dessert, so I guess we'll just have to return, which I'm sure won't disappoint my wife in the slightest. When we received the bill we were both surprised because we had expected it to be significantly higher than it was based on the service and quality of the food. Before dinner cocktails were refreshing and we then enjoyed Caesar salad and tomato basil soup before our main courses of chicken parmigiana and chicken molli, both of which were tasty in a traditional way. A tasty cannoli followed up. My wife enjoyed a Pinot Grigio with dinner, and I a very full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, which was the chef's evening's special recommendation.
