Student was awesome. Very polite and attentive to what I wanted in a haircut. Would definitely recommend her again. However there was an issue at the beginning of the process. I called 2 days ago for an appointment. Talked to the older lady with blond hair. She told me that she had something available for today. Went on ahead and booked the appointment (or so I thought). Got there early and patiently waited. When I signed in on the paper, the receptionist told me to go have a seat and wait. 20 minutes after my scheduled appointment (at this time I was already waiting for 45 minutes), three people had come in after me and was promptly seated with a student. So I went to the front desk to see what was going on. A tall slender young lady asked for my phone number and told me that she didn't see an appointment in the system for me. Needless to say I was a bit confused. She apologized and was able to get me seen with a student. Now the entire time I was waiting, the older receptionist did not acknowledge me or even made any kind of attempt to let me know anything. She saw me sitting there and did nothing. if I could give this place a zero star I would because the services that I've received here have been terrible. I went in yesterday for a pedicure, which lasted about maybe 15 minutes with the student telling me that she is not good at doing pedicures and she is being forced to do it. She then proceeded by putting my feet in scorching hot water and then messing up my nail shape. I asked her if I should come back because I had paid $23 for something that was not even worth five dollars. She only put a scrub on my feet and there was no massage or filling down the callus. When he did finally come over he was short and crude and just overall unpleasant. The poor girl afterwards looked even more lost than she did to start with. A different teacher had to step in. I would not come here again. The receptionist was really unprofessional and disinterested in providing the service of greeting me. I also felt a lack of confidence from my hair stylist, which caused me to feel anxious the whole time. While she was very, very nice and did a good job, she seemed uncertain of herself for much of the appointment, especially in the beginning, which caused me to regret my decision to come as soon as I sat in the chair. I was worried about the color she chose / had her supervisor choose for me, as they seemed to not know which would look good. The dye also came out a bunch the first week, even though I paid for permanent dye. Given that these were students and this was not an Aveda salon, I felt like the price did not make sense. Recently visited Paul Mitchell for a pedicure with a friend. The waiting time was longer than usual but was due to extra sanitation before they brought us back. The two ladies we received were so sweet and gentle! This was my first pedicure ever and going into it I was a bit nervous, but loved it in the end! The girl who did mine took her time to make sure everything was perfect and gave me some pointers for good nail care for the future. (Bonus!! I can't believe I spent sixty eight dollars on this. I went here as a recommendation from a friend. At first I scheduled a hair cut with the stylist she had. I then later changed my appointment to a color and cut. I guess because I changed it they changed the stylist? Anyways, I showed her the photo and she assured me she could do it and that it would look good on my natural curly hair. The color went fine, she was a really sweet girl. Everything went down hill when the cut happened though. She cut my curtain bangs with little to no blending. I also asked for layers but apparently they're invisible since I can't see them. By the time she was done I looked in the mirror and it was bad. The ends were super frizzy and straggly. she didn't put any product in my hair besides hair spray. Then there were just a few random curls in my hair. I usually don't speak up when it comes to things like this but it was just that bad. She then curled it but they fell out by the time I checked out. The supervisor even came by asked to see the photo and okayed it. I work in Charleston two days a week, and travel here and there for the remainder. I have literally been too busy for self care! My cute spikey style has approached Florence Henderson's iconic Layered Bowl Cut (Brady Bunch mom). Not not so cute or iconic in 2018. I called this morning to see if they take walk ins and to confirm hours. Yes they take walk ins .... *if* their appointments aren't booked. What? So basically the just offer last minute appointments on a FCFS basis. There are no spots or stylists left open/kept available for walk in clients, and they're all booked up for the forseeable future. Mmkay. The lady who answered the phone has a customer friendly accommodating nature much like a flaming case of herpes. She actually recommended I hit up the competition (Great Clips and Sport Clips) "in the same parking lot". Reluctantly, I'm at Great Clips... but I have a feeling they'll just trim up the ole' Florence Henderson's Layered Bowl Cut and send me packing..... because "girls don't *really* want to wear their hair that short".... The floor manager was outrageously rude. I didn't like my cut and he said to the student, right in front of me, that people don't understand what they are asking for and it's their own fault if they don't like it. I only asked for a trim. I expected they would try to make it look good? On my way out he asked, happy now? I said no, I don't like they way you're talking to me. He started to laugh at me, out loud in front of everyone. his was an all around mistake for me. The women I came across are very immature and unprofessional and nothing is done to address the behavior. I don't believe the higher ups care much about the culture of this place. If they did experiences that I had with the stylist Chyna would not have occurred. Customer service is a joke and nonexistent here and so if that's any importance to anyone, I'd advise that they keep looking. I hope the right people will read this review. My experience with Chyna was so poor I had to request a different stylist. I was switched to a different stylist after complaining only to have this girl Chyna return to finish my hair. The tall, heavy guy who walks around as if he is a person of authority is a prop and gets paid to roam the floors as if he is there for support. He did nothing to help me even when I explained the situation to him. I wrote a letter the higher ups whose names are Demetria Johnson and Bart Horton. Bart ignored 2 emails that I sent him outright and Demetria did as well after I missed a phone call from her. I felt it was important to share my experience; and the leaders in place, Mr. Horton and Ms. Johnson, who inevitable set the tone and culture of the company, clearly don't care. It's a shame that these people have the prestige of working for the Paul Mitchell brand and yet they express little regard for leadership and integrity. read more

I went to the salon in July 23 and I sat with a girl name maalika and she did starter coils on me she told me the whole service was going to be $60 but when I got their the school told me $33 so I was being over charged by her. Also, I payed the $33 and the counter and still decided to tip her from the kindness of my heart after she preceded to walk me out side and told me to cashapp her a reminder balance and their wasn't any . I am a single mom. When my sister died 10 years ago, Colt was 8 months old, I adopted him 4 months later. You might think, that's strange, why am I telling you this? Because Colt has Autism and other behavioral issues. I've been hit, punched, called to his school. He's stopped doing any work at school. This is the hardest it's ever been. I started going to a support group. I was told, do something for yourself! So. I thought, I should get my hair done. It's been 6 months. That always makes me feel better. I looked at some of the nicer salons in town. I felt guilty spending hundreds of dollars to look pretty. Then I got a friend request on IG. She's a student at Paul Mitchell. Hhhmmmm! I've heard of Paul Mitchell, this could work! She gets experience and I don't pay as much. WinWin. Or so I thought. After 4 hours in the chair. For Balayage and a cut. I look in the mirror. It's not the best lighting, and I'm tired. I'm sure it's great. The "supervisor" even comes over and checks me out. She proclaims, gorgeous. Great job. So it's good. I'm just tired. And I need to rush home. I got there at 11 and my son gets home at 3:30, it's 3:05 now... Cannot be late! I get in my car. And I can't help myself. I have to see it. I have a sun roof. Natural light! I'm excited. Then. I see my hair. Brassy. Orange. OMG. What happened? I'm a natural blonde (abet with age... It's gotten darker) I don't even know how it's possible. Also, the color. It's a bit like camo. Spot here orange. Spot here more yellow. Spot here brown (ish) I cried on my way home. And that night. After I put Colt to bed. And I cried today. Now. I know. It will grow out. And really, I'm lucky. It's just a bad hair job. BUT. This was supposed to be self care. Positive. I was going to have bouncy gorgeous hair. I was going to feel lighter, if just for a bit. When i called the "school" To get some of my money back. (I can live with the choppy bob - it's kind of eccentric) I'm told, I signed something. NO refunds. I can come back. And another inexperienced student can then "fix" this mess (I laughed - not at the moment, but later) I'm going to try and fight it. But somehow, I think they hired experienced lawyers to screw not only the students, but the gullible "clients" as well. Oh. And did I tell you? I'm not working. I had to take time off because things have gotten so bad with Colt. So money is Really tight. And remember, it's just me. He needs a winter coat and new clothes, more than I need to feel "pretty". So I cry. And then I think. Well, if I can't get my money back. Maybe. Just maybe, I can stop some other single mom, who just wants a little self care, from getting the same treatment. Please. If you really want to get your hair done and don't have the money. Go to Walmart! At Least you won't be out a $100. And who knows. Maybe you hit the jackpot and get a great stylist at Walmart (I don't actually think you will - please don't go there either) For the same results, I could have gotten a box of Clairol for $10. And I would not have felt so taken advantage of. In summary. Please do not get your hair colored at Paul Mitchell. This weekend I'm taking Colt to get that winter coat. But it did not turn out lighter. It turned out darker and not even close to the pix she showed them. And they guy ( in his kilt) was rude. This is a cosmetology school that has a salon at the front side of the school's building. The salon is very modern: lots of natural light, chrome, mirrors, black, etc. There is a "color bar" where they do your color or highlights then you move to the person's station for the cutting portion. Everything is sleek and modern and they have popular music streaming through the loud speakers. So yes, you're having a student do your hair, but they're supervised by an experienced professional who gives them advice and monitors their work. This part is very reassuring, but my attitude is "it's just hair" and it can always be fixed if it gets messed up. You also have to sign off on a waiver each time you go saying that you understand the person doing your hair is a student and basically you won't hold the school liable if you don't like your new 'do. If having a student doesn't scare you off (I know some people who will only go to their one beautician and nowhere else) then this is the place for you. Paul Mitchell charges a FRACTION of what all the other salons charge BECAUSE you're giving a student real-life experience. I always get FULL highlights, toner and a trim and the total cost is $48 plus (cash) tip. At a typical upscale salon in Charleston I usually pay around $200 for the same services, plus tip. Only one time were my highlights messed up, but I didn't leave the seat until it was fixed. Yes it was time consuming, but for the price I didn't (and wouldn't) complain. When I say time-consuming, I mean: 5-6 hours. Every other time I've been, nothing went wrong and I was in and out in the usual amount of time, which is about 2 hours for all that. I have VERY long and thick hair. The school accepts credit cards as payment however there is NO GRATUITY via credit card. Come prepared with cash for your tip. I like to tip generously here because I'm getting such a great deal on my services and still come out way under what I would normally pay. I find myself tipping around 40% ($20) plus these guys are students and aren't making much. From what I gather, they all have second jobs usually waiting tables or something to help support themselves through school. If you like to save money while getting great style, I highly recommend Paul MItchell School, conveniently located by the Tanger Outlet Mall in North Charleston. read more

So I just recently visited Paul Mitchell to use my groupon. And wow the hair treatment was amazing. My hair is very soft and smooth now. It use to friz out everyday. I was greeted by Chis and he was pretty nice. In fact at the hair washing station I got the best head massage ever like it seriously put me to sleep. The only thing I did not like was how long I was there for. I understand they are students but at a normal salon they do not spend 2 hours on your hair not unless your getting is dyed multiple colors. But the hair treatment was 20mins and the rest of the time was spent on cutting and styling. It just felt like forever in the chair. But overall he did an awesome job on my hair and it looks great. The ladies at the front desk must be from the nearest trailer park association. Some of the teachers are very nice. Some of the students are eh. I had one good girl for a while. Current girl burned my scalp with blow dryer and same day burned my scalp with boiling hot water. I mean what did I expect for a $10 haircut. Cut was ok. It was goofy around the ears. I thought I would support kids trying to learn. As I am a former Vocational student myself. But after this last experience I'll go to a salon with a lot more experience and I know a bigger price tag. For a teaching facility, you get what you pay for. I have been to this location over a dozen times and the outcome is always a little different. I've not come out with green hair, but there's been a few times were i've come out with zebra-like blond highlights. The girls and guys are just getting started in their career, so don't expect deep conversation. The "supervisors" are pretty diligent and keep the students on their toes. I have been getting a blonde balayage for over ten years. I went in and showed my stylist what I wanted and the instructor, Rocky, came over and talked to me as well. Never did he mention it would take multiple sessions to go blonde and I would have never thought to ask because like I said I've been going blonde for years and it was always done in one session with no issues. When the student stylist was finished my hair was three different colors, none of which were blonde like I asked for. The main color would be tolerable since I paid about half price than what I usually pay with an experienced professional but the multi colors is not something I could live with. I went in for a redo and the instructor, Rocky, told me I would have to pay another 93$ since they didn't consider it a redo because blonde takes multiple sessions to complete. This is news to me! He should have told me in the initial consult if this was the case that I would have to return and pay addition money to do what I wanted. I would have left immediately if I knew I would have to pay the same price I pay my regular stylist with over 25 years experience. Now I have 3 different colors in my hair and have to spend more money to have it fixed by a professional. I don't understand how I can have multi colored hair and it not be considered a redo. read more

I think its a wonderful place to get your hair or nails done. I've been a few times for a cut, color, and manicure. You cannot go in with high expectations of perfection as these are students. Yes, I've had a messed up cut but the instructor fixed it. When my nails came out horribly I did not have to pay for it. Everyone I've met at the school has been kind, respectful, and efficient. Definitely worth the price and I always try to tip the students as much as I can (bring cash for tips but you can pay with credit card for services). I went it to take our the red from my hair and get a cool Toned ombre. The student helping me out was so rough and didn't know how to handle a head of hair. She got the color on my face multiple times and made my face wet everytime she had to wash my hair. She had no idea how to do anything even though she said she had been there for 6 months and keo screwing up even after the instructor would tell her to do something a certain way. She has no n business becoming a hair stylist. The instructor was ok with color but she didn't know how to do an ombre. She didn't say that but she obviously didn't know what techniques to use. I had to tell her multiple times I want the lighter color feathered out and not a straight line but it still doesn't look right. I was there for 8 hours, paid $90 and hate my hair. I have been to other hair schools before to get a service including Toni and Guy and now I can see the difference in the education. The instructors there just give students tips to help them out because the students already know how to do things and just need guidance. At Paul Mitchell the student had no idea how to.do anything. She even hurt me while washing my hair.The entire time the instructor worked on the right side of my head and the student on the left and this resulted in the most uneven service I have ever received. read more

Love the atmosphere of the place - high energy and very friendly staff. Had my highlights and cut done by Tan and would absolutely recommend her to others. Tan was professional, fun, always made sure she knew what I wanted and whether I was comfortable, and she was very precise in her foiling and cutting. I knew before going to expect to be there for a while and I was - 5 hours - but I was well pleased with the results and love how much attention Tan gave to making my hair just right! What started out to be great service, turned into a nightmare. I was trying to go back to blonde and knew that that process was gradual. I got highlights in July and they looked great. I was scheduled to come back in four weeks, and before they started any work, I asked if my hair was healthy enough to go through this again, and I was assured it was. I should've questioned why there was not an instructor over seeing my second appointment before I went through with it. Needless to say my hair is damaged pretty much beyond repair. I have lost so much of my hair since then and my hair was already very fine, now it's just awful. I was finally getting some length to my hair, and now I'm going to have to cut most of that off. When I contacted them to let them know I was not happy, all they offered me was a conditioning treatment and a shine treatment which worked for only that day. What they should have offered was a complete correction since they do not do refunds. Very disappointed and would suggest anyone that goes there to ask A LOT of questions before and always make sure anything that could be complicated is overseen and approved by an instructor. I do not necessary blame the stylist entirely for this except that she should have spoken to her instructor first like the first time I was there. For the amount of money that I spent there and on all the products I've purchased to try to correct this damage, I could've gone to a high-end salon and actually spent less. Lesson learned but it's going to take years for my hair to recover from this one. read more

The girl at the front desk could not care less that I was waiting that long. She said let me check and walked away for a minute. When she came back, she said the "stylist" was getting set up and would be up in a minute. Again, no apologetic tone or acknowledgement of the wait time.
