Since way too many items hanging in my closet are from Paul Smith, you might expect me to give this other pink palace of Los Angeles a five-star review, but the fact that it's almost impossible to by a piece of casual clothing here for less than $300, I cannot in good conscience dole out more. But if you're gonna blow a huge wad of cash, this is the place to go, bro! Everything else--Ted Baker, Rufus, Ben Sherman and all those other wannabees are feeble imitations. The interior is like a film set. It's much more expansive than the diminutive London shops and has women's clothing, which the Fifth Avenue store lacks. They also a wonderful array of books and other gifts that have been selected by a connoisseur's -- or perhaps curator's -- eye. Paul Smith is a brand that extends way beyond cool socks and beautifully executed suits with witty, unexpected linings. A long time ago, Ralph Lauren was able to capture this way of life, but it has become outmoded, dated and clichd. Not everyone knows Paul. (The kind of club you really want to join.) read more

I've been buying Paul Smith since the mid 90s when I first discovered his clothing. When the LA store finally opened I knew I was in trouble and that prophecy has been fulfilled!! I spend WAY TOO MUCH $$$$ here, but with no regret! Sir Paul epitomizes everything I like about finely tailored clothes and shoes. I've become quite the shoe freak, having bought about 15 pairs of PS shoes over the past 2-3 years. The quality of the SHOES is amazing, and while I own a lot of his clothes as well, I feel the shoes are the standout items at this store. The shop itself is great, whether or not you like Paul Smith's wares. It is a true "lifestyle" store selling everything from clothes to shoes to books to house wares to accessories etc. The staff here is always friendly (probably because they know I'm ready to drop coin when I come down) tho sometimes I feel like I know more about what they're selling than they do. I had a chance to meet Sir Paul himself when he was down at the store last spring. That was a fantastic moment as Mr Smith was very genuinely nice and down to earth. He has a great sense of humor and it's nice to know I am supporting such a good fellow. I was shopping for a suit for my wedding, and I hit up Paul Smith--being a fan and all. The complete lack of service blew me away. I walked around the store several times and could barely pull a hello out of the staff. While browsing through the suits, I had to let myself into a changing room to try them on. I was also dissapointed in the lack of suit selection. There were more of his suits at Neiman Marcus..?!! Needless to say, I didn't end up buying my suit there... Visited this store right after leaving Drake's OVO store on La Brea. My daughter wanted to take pictures with the pink wall. The employees were super helpful and friendly. They offered us some bottles of water and they have some clean restrooms inside. Store is cool and modern with a mix of old world charm and modern art pieces. Great vibe to shop in and I ended up buying some sweet blue suede Italian loafers for 50% off. Had a great time shopping here for a few minutes and they gave us a few free pink button pens and postcards too. I am truly Paul Smith obsessed. Having been to every PS shop in London, Italy, NYC and soon Paris, not to mention any store that carries Paul Smith period, I can say I am certifiably obsessed. On a recent trip to LA I ran out of time and missed the trip to the great pink mecca that has been created on Melrose. But wait! They have a phone number and that makes ordering from them painfully for my credit card, all too easy. Especially during the Paul Smith sale. Now all I have to do is sit back and wait for that beautiful swirl dog collar (on sale) and brand new belted trench (on sale) to arrive. With a vast selection of unique clothes, accessories, books, jewelry, and "etc" the collection at Paul Smith is as comprehensive and cheeky as one would expect and the quality certainly leaves nothing to be deired - Sir Paul certainly doesn't skimp on the details of his collection. Those things noted, as eye-popping as the neon pink building is and as excessive as the pricetags are, the service at Paul Smith is not impressive at all. Arriving on a Sunday approximately 2 hours before closing there were notably already clerks "packing up" for the day and the others salespeople simply stood around chatting amongst themselves instead of helping the customer. Wanting to take a look at some cufflinks in the case I literally had to walk across the store to request assistance and I was met with rolled eyes and a look of exasperation. Upon closer inspection the links, like everything else in the store, were excellent but I was so put off by the attitude that I opted not to buy. With the economy as it is and so many high end designers flashing their products in Los Angeles it would seem to me that both the products and the service should be fantastic - alas at Paul Smith it seems that only the products fit the bill (a notably large one.) read more

Paul Smith, the brand, has a notably cool design aesthetic that I adore. I first visited one of the shops in London, where I fell in love with one thing after the other. I really wished I had more money to throw to wind because I saw a great wallet for one of my best friends. Fast-forward to nearly 6 years later and I'm in the market for a birthday present for my aforementioned friend. Paul Smith came to mind and I headed to Melrose. The store is spacious with items displayed for optimal viewing pleasure. However, it's not one of those stores where you feel like you're in a museum, unable to touch anything or speak at an audible volume. I first headed toward the men's section for my friend's gift. I saw some cool looking necklaces, pendants, and cuff links, but he's extremely picky, and I didn't want to take a gamble. (By the way, it really is a shame that more men don't wear cuff links...they're so cool!) I reluctantly passed up the unique designs and pops of color in the tie section, since he works in a casual environment. My eyes wandered to some of the books on display...interior design, modern art, and the like. I wanted to look, but had limited time. After taking a peak at the women's section (how could I resist?), I meandered over to the sock section. Now I know that socks are not usually considered a desireable gift, but in this case, they are pure luxury (plus I know my friend loves expensive socks). There were striped socks, polka dot socks, long socks, short socks, and beautifully colored socks to adorn the most tired of feet. I had a hard time narrowing it down, but settled on a mint green pair with skinny light pink stripes and a plum colored heel. They were wrapped in pretty Paul Smith tissue and tucked inside of a matching bag. The socks were well received and worn immediately. What I found especially refreshing about this store is that the salespeople were nice, very representative of the brand, and not at all pretentious or annoying. I was a happy camper when I left and will go back to explore the women's section more thoroughly. read more

Oh my god....I LOVE this store! I love the exterior, the location, the interior. Every detail is meticulously planned, and if not, it certainly looks like it! It truly won me over with the offerings, and the friendly service. My boyfriend worked with a guy named Chad (since he did most of the shopping), and found him to be very accommodating and attentive. I'd definitely recommend working with Chad if possible. Overall, I would come to this store for nothing else but to find inspiration. I felt as though Oscar Wilde resurrected himself and bought his aestheticism to this store. Or perhaps Paul Smith is his reincarnate. Regardless - this was one of the most original and beautiful shops that I visited in all of LA. read more

One of the saleswoman was really rude and mean. We parked at their parking lot, once we got off the car, the girl came and told us the parking is only for customer. If we want to take the pictures, we need to park on the street. We wanted to go into the store anyway. We went in the store, and spent quite a while inside, but didn't find anything we want to buy. We got out and tried to take a few pictures. Once we got out of the store, that sales asked the security to follow us and tell us to leave if we want to take the pictures. RIGHT AWAY AFTER WE GOT OUT! This is so ridiculous. We left and never gonna shop or take pictures there anymore. read more

Awesome place to take pictures! They let you use their bathroom and also give you water on hot days. If there isn't parking on the street, ok to park in their lot. Their staff doesn't mind. What a complete and utter disappointment. After skimming through the Paul Smith website, I was looking forward to visiting the Melrose store and looking at their cufflinks that they offer in person. I walk into the store and was immediately greeted by a friendly cashier. As I walk into the men's section, I walk in between 5 salespeople looking bored and uninterested. As I make eye contact with a few of them, they hazily glared past me. Since I'm in the market for cufflinks, I approach one of their glass cases and smile at 2 of the salespeople leaning on the case. It was complete silence. I try to strike up some conversation and ask questions about their cufflinks, and all I get is one-word answers. After taking one of the sets of cufflinks out of the case, the salesperson immediately asks me, "So can I ring this up for you?" I politely tell them that I would still like to look around. I mean, I've only been in the store for about 3 minutes at that point. After looking around the store, I felt that their items were overpriced and the quality in their items are subpar at best. Take your business to Penguin, Thomas Pink, or geez even Ben Sherman if you're looking for clothing in similar styles. At least at those stores, they treat their customers as if they appreciate your business. My experiences at those stores have earned my business repeatedly. Lastly, I just signed up for Yelp because I was so impelled to write this review. I just left the Paul Smith store 20 minutes ago. As for a bright side, at least this experience finally forced me to sign up to Yelp and start writing reviews, a task that I've been postponing for at least 2 years now. read more

This pink only-in-LA box beckons on Melrose. The first time I drove by I almost got into an accident trying to make an illegal lane change to get back to it. Though I'm no stranger to Paul Smith [he has two stores in Manhattan and a bevvy in London] this west coast outpost is a bit friendlier and a lot more fun. They have all the usual staples of shirts, suits, ties and cufflinks mixed with a heavy dose of interesting art books, toys and graphical gizmos that beg to be touched and bought. I've had some service issues in their New York stores [lack of service] but either the economy or the weather seems to have a reverse impact on the staff here because they're pretty damn nice and helpful. Paul Smith is my favorite designer. I couldn't find what I need at Nordstoms or Nieman Marcus. I went there about two months ago. I'm blown away with the selection there and especially Scott and the staff. The store is usually very busy, and everyone pitches in as a team. If a blazer or shirt doesn't look good, they will tell you. I like slim fit and they won't let me buy anything until it fits perfectly. They don't charge alteration fees and will send same day delivery at no charge. If you want to look good, you must go there. read more

Vibrant LAAAAA. Shopping as a cultural experience is Paul Smith. Once inside the pink building you feel you are in a cultural museum filled with the coolest books, posters, t-shirts, suits, hats, shoes and accessories for women, men and children. This is a store for artists, filmmakers, musicians, writers and Harley riders. Although there is now a store in San Francisco that is closer to our home, I still prefer to fly to Los Angeles for purchasing items for my wife and child with no hesitation. On every visit I find something new and the gifts for my wife and son are truly valued for play as well as for the artful aesthetic. Paul Smith turns the contemporary on its head. The sensibility is English with a touch of lime that is not for the faint of heart. read more

Though not as popular on this side of the pond, Paul Smith is a must for every well dressed man. The giant pink building on Melrose is completely unmistakable. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary, albeit bubblegum pink, warehouse, but the interior is very different. It's a cozily decorated, gigantic space, furnished with a mixture of Hollywood boutique/modern/British influenced design that showcases the amazing up-scale British designer's multiple collections beautifully. Bright and airy, this store has a different ambiance than the Paul Smith store I used to frequent every visit to Manhattan (which, last I saw, was decorated in a quintessentially classic British, wood-lined walled walk-in closet kind of style, but with a bohemian chic mix, in a townhouse styled interior space). Though far different from what I was used to with Paul Smith stores I've visited before, this store made me tingle inside with excitement. When it comes to dress shirts, suits, formal wear, and sportswear, Paul Smith's clothing offers updated fashions with a bit of subtle humor. It was originally his beautiful floral prints that said "Hey, look at me... I'm soooo not your grandad's shirt," that originally caught my eye back when I was in high school. And though I don't normally wear suits, I still spend in excess on all those wonderful dress shirts that are always made with the best of cuts and colors, with so many options in prints, classic PS stripes, and solids, all with tiny yet noticeable details. (Btw, sorry for all the run-on sentences. Clearly I'm excited). Dress them up, dress them down; buy some suits, or buy some sox; this store doesn't disappoint with its witty designs and fun knick knacks that they sell. On my last trip (7/16/2010), I bought the last two large fine-bone China dog bowls for my two dogs, three dress and formal shirts, and a few accessories. Of course, it was a bit pricy, but all worth it, considering that my dogs are happy and I now have clothes for that wedding I have to go to in August. I don't know about these other reviews where people say they're being ignored, but I've always experienced good service here. Here's a few tips: the people in the store tend to lay back and allow you to peruse, but when you actually ask for help, they're on top of everything. Sizes are procured for you in a flash. Attendants will whiz right into the back and get you everything you need. All you have to do is ask. The staff is polite, up beat, and more than willing to offer advice, suggestions, and alternatives if you want it. For example, on this recent trip, I wasn't wearing a suit, but I was shopping for a shirt to wear with a suit I was planning to wear to my cousins wedding, so automatically, the man helping me brought over a sportscoat for me to try my selections on with. They do go above and beyond what is required of them. And of course, with the mention of that man who helped me last time, I feel I must say that if you do decide to visit the store, definitely ask for Jesse (I hope I have his name right). And if you don't know your size in formal shirts, don't be afraid. He or any other attendant at the store will gladly measure you for your new wardrobe. read more

MissMs. I love PS. His shoes.....what can I say? I don't wear high heels anymore but it's so easy to look incredibly chic with Paul's shoes and boots. I think about 14 pairs now. They will never go out of style. I adore shopping for my husband here. All the close guys in my life get Paul Smith socks. I love the shops in New York and London but I the hot pink store on Melrose is my go to store. I really can't understand these complaints with service. I find the service to be very good. On the advice of an acquaintance, I first entered this store in August of 2011 and have become a regular patron ever since. I've purchased so many pairs of their incredible socks that I lost count a long time ago. But I also have shirts, belts, hats, jackets, cufflinks, coats, cologne, rings, etc. Their merchandise can be subtle or stupendous. Many are truly unique. They also sell books, posters, furniture, etc. You owe it to yourself to stop by (they have their own private parking lot) and look around because you may come across that hidden gem you've been searching for. This, to me, is a high end store with prices to match but the trade off is in the variety and quality of what you can buy. Just GO ! read more
