I ordered on seamless/grubhub and my order came fairly quickly so no complaints on delivery time and driver mentioned it was slow. The fried shrimp didn't have a bread or battered coating so it was more so sautéed shrimp. The Mac and cheese was gross! The seafood rice did not taste homemade. Lucked into Paula's at the end of a long day of touristing. Got two orders of fried chicken and one of catfish, with yams, collards, and mac and cheese sides. We stood in the tiny entry while loads of people came in and left, but it was absolutely worth the wait (fried takes longer). Been going to Paula's for a while now. We get the fish and shrimp dinner with mac and cheese and yams. Best breakfast/lunch/dinner meal around this area. You can feel the soul they put into the mac and cheese. The shrimp and fish are cooked to perfection 95% of the time and seasoning is A+. Yams are as sweet as you think they should be, not overly but not starchy. We're happy with it every time. We also ordered other items on their menu and they were all were a quality A rating. I ordered about three hours before closing through grubhub. What a mistake. I ordered two meals and wings and one side. When I received my order I missed one of my meals (Catfish). In the past they use to call and let you know but that didn't happen. When I attempted to call the restaurant it kept going into voicemail I then call the driver and the driver was kind enough to go back and let me know that they ran out of the item which I requested which was catfish. It was unprofessional that no one picked up the phone knowing there would be an issue. The only reassuring thing is that I got a refund. The food was not great. We were looking for some reasonably priced seafood in the Bronx and came across this place while browsing Groupon. I saw that it was fairly closeby on East 233rd Street. I know this area can get pretty busy so I was cautious to see where I would get parking. I was luckily able to park across the street without any parking restrictions on a Friday night. The place is pretty small with mostly standing room only except for a few barstools along one side. The menu is posted on the wall. We ended up with three dinners, a shrimp, chicken wings and fried whiting. Each dinner somes with two sides. You can choose some fries, sweet potato fries, mac and cheese, yams, greens, corn, black eyed peas and rice and peas amongst others. Everything smelled great. They did take a little while preparing the food but that is because the main entrees were being made to order. The Groupon was $15 (or $16) for $30 worth of food. so we only had to add a little bit more to cover the total costs of $45. The dinners range from $13-17 each and the portions are massive. The sides alone are huge. One dinner can easily fill two people. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. By the way, the staff was great the entire time. Which they did not ( The wrong Groupon was purchased fir me the non - delivery coupon . I would have paid for delivery . 5-Stars -- Why 5 stars? Love. You can feel the love in their food and you can feel the love in their customer service. My mom's been at the hospital for the past week and she finally got her appetite back. I found Paula's on yelp and it piqued my mom's interest so I went to Paula's. When I walked in, I was "the last customer" on the day before Labor Day so they were out of almost everything. Since I was the last customer they locked the door behind me. I asked for Fried Chicken and Fried Whiting (both my mom's favorites) and I was told apologetically that I would have to wait because the food was "made to order" and would have to wait. I told them that if I wanted fast food I'd go to Kennedy's down the block, and that good things come to those who wait. While I waited for my made-to-order whiting and chicken to be done, they opened the door for some other regulars and they apologized to them that they had to close early because they were out of food. The regulars didn't seem particularly upset and had to "settle" for side dishes or whatever was left over. From my time there I could tell that Paula's is more than a restaurant. They treat brand new customers like me, and their established regulars as family members. I just wish I could see how they treat their own family because the love the put into the food and their service was amazing. Paula's is as much of community service as they are a restaurant. I actually over-ordered at Paula's. Since the chicken comes as either breast+wing or leg+thigh., I feared a small portion size (what was I thinking? There's no such thing as "small portions" at a "soul cafe"), I ordered both the breast+wing and leg+thigh dinners. I'm not sure where their chickens are sourced but the thigh seemed like it came from a turkey. Do not worry about the portion sizes here. Not only did mom and I eat well, but I finished her leftovers the next day. The food here is *amazing*. I just wish that they were closer to where we live once my mom is done at the hospital, but I may have to make trips back here anyway. So I waited until the second time I ordered food to make a review and can I say the food is fantastic. The first time I ordered barbecue chicken, yams and greens, they made a mistake and gave me dark meat. And I hate dark meat. That meat I had was so juicy, moist and tender I almost cried. The yams were perfectly sweet and the greens were seasoned beautifully. This time, I ordered the yams again, teriyaki wings and the seafood rice. The Lord knows I nearly died- it was just that delicious. And we can't forget about the side of corn bread. No. Complains. Only. Gratitude. I have tried this restaurant a few times and compared to other soul food restaurants that I have tried I'd have to say that it's just OK. I have visited the store as well as ordered take out. The delivery service was incredibly slow and I had to reheat everything by the time it got to me. If I ordered from this restaurant again I would definitely walk in and pick up the order myself. The restaurant itself is small and not a sit down restaurant at all but if you chose to eat there the available seating can only accommodate about 2 people. So far I have tried their short ribs, fried seafood combo, sweet potato pie as well as their iced tea. The short ribs dish was severed generously and probably the best dish that I have had at this restaurant. It wasn't overly seasoned and cooked well. I had string bean and baked macaroni with my short ribs. I ordered this meal via the yelp app and had ordered collard greens originally but about 45 minutes later they called saying they ran out so I ordered string beans instead. So I never got the chance to taste their collard greens but the string beans were good. With that order I also tried there iced tea which tasted like it had 5 pounds of sugar in the one cup! No joke - I used their one serving to make a pitcher of normal tasting iced tea. That iced tea should definitely have a warning label for diabetics - seriously! On another occasion I walked in to order the fried seafood combo using a groupon I purchased. The meal I must say was very salty for my taste. It tasted as if they used a boxed fish fry mixture instead of their own and just added salt. I discovered this place after I moved closer to the bronx border in Yonkers. They are one of the few places that deliver to yonkers which is really nice. Some times there is inconsistency with the quality of food and quality of service. I ordered for delivery once and the driver did not have any change for the order, I had to go to a store to get change for the driver that never got out the car to give me my food. This was not very professional, so now I just order ahead and pick up my food.
