The food is not as good as it use to be. The biggest problem is the CHEAP PAPER THIN CONTAINERS they put hot food in. Got a chance to try out the food from this Soul Restaurant. I had the shrimp dinner with candied yams and mac n cheese. The candied yams are stellar! The macn cheese was okay but I've made and tasted better. It's not bad! Definitely authentic Southern cuisine. The shrimp was seasoned fairly well. We also tried wings and steamed salmon. The wings could be a little tastier but not bad. I did enjoy my plate. It's great the corn bread comes with each dish but I was too stuffed to try. FINALLY some soul food worth talking about in the North BX! When this spot popped up in my search I immediately went! Paula's is a nice CLEAN take out spot on 233rd Street, the staff was personable and that's always a deal breaker for me! The food was fresh, reasonably priced and might I add they're not selfish with portions. So this was my first time at Paula's. First the staff was really really friendly, informative, and accommodating. They offered me a complimentary side of yams which was really good by the way. I ordered three meals (shrimp and chips, whiting dinner with Mac and greens and baked chicken with rice and greens) which were all GREAT. Everyone enjoyed their food and the chicken is well seasoned. I have a question. Have the owners gotten cocky with their success that they have forgotten what it took for them to get to where they are now? I ask this question because ever since they opened their store in Hackensack, NJ, their Bronx location is at a steady decline. They take the phone off the hook so it's forever busy, when they do pick up, they don't even say hello and put you on hold right away, put you on hold and never come back, get your orders wrong, never have what's on the menu ( for almost 4 years on Wednesday they are supposed to have turkey meatloaf but NEVER have it. TAKE IT OFF THE MENU ALREADY) the food at times (depending when you go) shouldn't even be served (undercooked chicken, hairy and feathered) and to top it off not opening on time. And I don't bother using Uber Eats or Seamless or Grubhub, because they don't have their entire menu on there so you HAVE to call. Maybe folks that use those concerns order the same thing, but Salmon Cakes YOU CANNOT order on those sites. Hey Paula's... Maybe you can add your full menu to those delivery apps. Something to think about. Now I believe in patronizing my own, but my own always seem to do this once they felt they've "made" it. The same energy you gave when you had your grand opening should be the same energy today. I have mixed feelings about Paula's Soul Cafe. I like their turkey legs, oxtail, shrimp, and most of their other proteins but I cannot say the same for their mac and cheese. Some days it's ok but other days it is just horrible and mushy and I would not recommend getting that. I recommend you stick to their collard greens, sweet yams, or rice and peas. I also love their desserts and I highly recommend the banana pudding even though on some days they don't have it. The beauty of Yelp is reading the history of other patrons. It wasn't until after I posted about this restaurant that I read a host of other complaints that were identical. Specifically this restaurant has a habit of extorting money from its customers by packing up their bags without all of the items that are ordered. While simultaneously charging you in full . When you speak to the manager to try to get your money back after the fact, she will refuse. She's a big mean looking person with a blue Mohawk braid in the middle of her head and gives you angry nasty looks that she hopes will frighten you away from saying anything to her. I don't eat red meat and the collard greens are made with turkey, perfect, just how I like them. The services was A1, the people behind the counter were welcoming, and let me try samples of the potatoes salad and pineapple pudding. They both were good. Pudding was so good I bought that too.
