I am a homeowner and do minimal shopping at home improvement stores. I purchased a pair of Ace Branded gloves on Saturday morning and came to return them and buy a more robust pair (for more money per pair) as the gloves did not last 3 hours of yard work - they had holes in the glove. The young lady refused to take the gloves back because they were used. I told her I knew that as I was the one who used them. After several verbal exchanges and her picking at the shredded glove, I got upset and called her a blockhead. (Not good by me) She said I had to see a store Manager. I just returned from attempting to return the gloves and buy a better pair, and Austin, the store manager, also refused the return, and I told him I would never be back. He smiled and said goodbye. I guess at $17.00 pair of gloves is worth really ticking off a customer. It's all smiles while buying, but not when you try and return a defective pair of gloves and buy a more expensive pair. I am done shopping at ACE. I want to buy locally, but I guess the cost of acquiring a new customer is less than $17.00. The store will not suffer one bit from my choice, but it is my choice to make. Great selection and service for our needs. We needed to replace the shut off valves on two sinks, which requires specific configurations to match the existing copper pipes and new supply hoses. Went to the local Lowe's. Every bin of shut off valves looked like a hungry badger had pawed through it, leaving random bits in every bin. If the right combination was there somewhere, neither of us could find it. Came to Paul's, looked at the plumbing aisle, an employee offered to help and two minutes later we were out the door with the correct products. It was well worth the extra drive time to get such helpful service. read more

This is a nice store with a nice selection. Upon entering, I was carrying a bag and wearing a backpack, so I thought I'd be helpful and leave my bag upfront. The old, unkempt, crabby woman at the register(think cat lady combined with prison guard personality)ordered me to also remove my backpack in a tone befitting a county jail intake matron. I complied without a word since I just wanted to get on with my shopping. I walked around the store and was asked if I needed help about 10 times and followed everywhere. I had a feeling it was more about treating me like a shoplifter just because I wore a backpack(that I already removed when I walked in). The other annoying thing is when I had a question the staff isn't smart enough to be more specific than answering tools section(Correct answer is aisle number and shelf level). I bought a tarp, shoelace, $10 wool socks, pepper spray and made sure to get my receipt or be falsely detained by the woman auditioning for crazy cat lady/prison guard. I spent over $43 and the cashier woman prison guard wasn't even nice enough to apologize and thank me for my business. Instead, she again admonished me not to look at the 3 different pepper sprays the one competent staff Russ put on the counter for me to look at. It didn't occur to her they were on the counter for me to look at. After her 2nd incredibly rude outburst(not to be confused with customer service)I told her firmly to learn some manners which I do rarely but will call out jerks when they deserve it. Since the one employee Russ was professional and competent and they had the items I wanted I bumped this store up to 3 stars. I doubt I'll shop there again. Moved my son in to an appointment and bought a curtain rod elsewhere. Realized it didn't have any hardware included. We didn't want to drive all the back to IKEA so looked for a hardware store nearby. Paul's Ace was the closest one. It was clean and well laid out. We found help right away. So glad we got the help as they have so many drawers of hardware to pick from, I had no clue where to begin. Checkout was fast and friendly. 1000% : Needed a missing bolt + washer + nut from my gate. I removed a like one and brought it into the store where I was greeted immediately by the person behind the register and another in front of me who asked if they could help me. I said I needed a duplicate set and handed the bolt + washer + nut to Mo who immediately headed to the aisle when I had thought I would be pulling drawer after drawer looking for the match. By the time I arrived in the aisle she already had the matching set in hand. That's what I need. She wrote it up for the cashier, then proceeded to help me with duplicating some keys, and I was out the door lickety-split. Next day went in for some matching ceiling hooks, was greeted by the register lady, I showed her my item and she sent me to the correct aisle, sode and location. Again as I deciphered the hooks of items, Mo showed up to assist me and guide me to the perfect item, and out I went. Just had such a positive experience at this store, that I'm writing this review from the parking lot. I'm doing an aquarium project with irregular sized bulkheads which makes the process extremely annoying and time consuming while trying to find parts etc.. I came here after a frustrating day as a last-ditch effort to get all that I needed to finish the project. MISSY helped me out with the plumbing and she KILLED it. Made my stress and anxiety disappear, and did it all in less than 15 minutes. Amazing employee who really knows what she's doing. After a busy day, I ran to the local hardware store because I like to support local business owners. Got to the door at 6:59 pm when they close at 7:00 pm, admittedly cutting it close. The night manager said they were closing and would not let me in. I was a little surprised but respected his decision. I have to purchase a non-standard light bulb which is not available just anywhere which would have taken a couple minutes. When I asked if he knew of any other places that sold that type of light bulb I was holding, he suggested I go to their Scottsdale location which is 15 minutes from the tempe location. So, this is my neighborhood hardware store and i come here for everything. Everyone is always helpful and ready to give suggestions with products. But, today, I want to express my gratitude for everyone that helped me out. My key broke in my deadbolt at home. Luckily, i was able to fish out the broken piece of key from the lock and whisked my son back into the car to see if Ace could do anything for me and my broken house key. Not only were they able to duplicate it for me, but i had no money on me (since my wallet was locked in my house) and they helped me out by waving the key cost. Went to this location today and the customers in front of me at the register had no masks on. I asked the cashier and he told me that "corporate doesn't enforce them". Well that's nice but the city of Tempe surely does. This is absolutely unacceptable in the middle of a pandemic that is killing over 1,000 people a day. Close to home, I often go here for a last minute item. Or to make extra keys in case I lose mine again. Sometimes my kids and I go there just to look around (secretly, it's for the freshly popped-popcorn). Either way, the staff is always pleasant and helpful. Prices are fair as long as the item falls within the "Hardware" category or if you desperately need something. I would not buy toilet paper there. Love the store overall. It's awesome. read more

This store is full of really helpful people. I was in the Architecture and the Art programs at ASU for several years, so I had some pretty odd assignments I ended up doing, but they always helped me find a way to get the job done. Also, if they don't have what you're looking for, they'll send you to a store that does have it. And they have all those cute nick-nacks in the front of the store (I found them rather inspirational). They don't have the cheapest prices, though. Home Depo has a larger stock and cheaper prices a lot of times, but I've had some trouble with people there not knowing how to work around a problem there when everything isn't spelled out in black and white. And most importantly, it's close to the ASU campus, so it's easy for students to get to! Also, it opens pretty early, so you can go pick something up and then go to a 7:40am class, making it just in time so you don't get in trouble with your metals teacher for not having the right brass tube to make a hinge. read more

Awful service here. Would not honor a coupon for propane in December, even though the fine print allowed it. I let that pass, but yesterday they hassled me over a return with an Ace backed guarantee. Cashier said "if we do anything would you want a refund or an exchange?" That ticked me off - "if"? Had to get 2 other people involved before a manager took one look at the receipt at the product and refunded. Why did it take that level when I had a receipt and the product with the guarantee plainly printed on the label? Cashier told person in front of me that this location is closing- good riddance. Update - manager responded, said they are not closing. Maybe he should also let his staff know, as they are telling people that ASU bought up the strip mall and is running everyone out. read more

I was on a quest for a rubber o-ring. NAPA Auto Parts number one apparently had an earthquake or a break-in and was closed. NAPA Auto Parts number 2 didn't have the part but they were cool and friendly at least. They recommended I try Ace Hardware which is apparently the O-ring capital of the world. For some reason they didn't carry the same paints that the other Ace Hardware's do, and the selection was pretty small. Also, I noticed their prices tend to be a bit lower than the other hardware stores. We went in recently to get a key for my boyfriends Jeep, it was acting up and we met Amy who helped us get our paint mixed and mentioned they could test the key to find out if possibly they could replace the key pad to save us the money on purchasing a new key. She had to help another customer at the paint desk so we went up to work with someone else on the key. When we finished it worked even less than it had before. Amy felt bad since she wasn't able to assist with the key and spoke to her Manager Missy to see if there was anything they could do. She agreed to get him a new key and Amy tracked him down through our rewards card and contacted him to come over and they programmed him a new key. Long story I know for a Yelp review, but when people go that far out of their way to make you a satisfied customer when they didn't have to... you need to shout it to the rooftops! I love to support local business and the employees here are always really friendly and outgoing. I'm not a "do-it-yourselfer" and it is always such a nice experience when I am in here and ask a question. Unlike when I go into other stores and get brushed off for not knowing hardware terminology, etc., I am treated so nicely and with respect here. I love this store. They are friendly and helpful without being intrusive. As a female, I've been treated poorly in several hardware stores. But they have never talked down to me here. Whether I'm looking for painting advice, plumbing advice, or help finding a specialty light bulb, the staff has always been knowledgeable. Homeco Ace has great manager special buys. I buy a lot of things for my workers at this store- gloves, GoJo, paper towels, and even replacement parts for the machinery we work on. I always go to Ace for items i need for home! There is always an Ace worker around to point me in the right direction if I can't find what I am looking for. Don't know where some of the folks that wrote negative reviews are coming from, but I have probably shopped at this Ace over 200 times and have nothing but positive things to say about them. Their service is outstanding - the folks there are truly helpful, they take the time to listen and explain (never in a condescending manner), they go the extra mile, and are genuinely customer-oriented. One telling testimony (by no means the only one): shopping at Lowe's for a part I needed for my single-handle shower faucet, and the guy in their plumbing department said they don't carry it any more but I can probably find it at Ace - and I did! Plus, they are generous in explaining how to do nearly anything - it seems the people they hire really know how to fix things, not just sell things. Bottom line: if you're repairing or replacing something existing, to go Ace; if you're building something new, then go to Lowe's (if it's something you'll be able to see!) or Home Depot (if it's something you won't be able to see because it's behind the walls!). Not hard-and-fast, but a good rule of thumb for me! read more

I arrived at Pauls in Tempe at 6;59. (They close at 7:00) I had the remnants of a broken ignition key. The counterman welcomed me in and proceeded to make me a key. Being that it was for a 2002 Land Rover it took a little looking to locate the correct key blank. He succeeded and cut a new key. He had me try the key before they closed and before he charged me. The key worked the door but not the ignition. He promptly came out to the car and felt the key operation. He then went it found another blank, cut another key. He went to my car and tried it in the door and then the ignition. Success. Being a business owner myself I can tell you I was over impressed, no huffing no sighs, no looking at the clock or his watch. His only goal was to do everything he could to assist me. This type of attitude and commitment to complete customer service is fading in our country. But it is alive and well at Pauls Hardware in Tempe. read more
