I heard so many great things about this bakery in Old Town Fredericksburg. Well, I went there for the first time this past weekend. I went just before closing, actually, and I have to say the donuts are superb...even late in the day! I'm sure they are even better early in the morning, fresh out of the oven. I can definitely see how someone would prefer these donuts over a "gourmet" donut shop like Sugar Shack, which I also appreciate and enjoy. But if it were a tie as far as the quality of these donuts, then the tiebreaker would surely be the price. A dozen donuts at Paul's cost less than a dozen at the fancier donut places. I really enjoyed the regular glazed donut as well as the buttercream donut. Much of the "popular" flavors were already gone so I look forward to returning and trying those. read more

Yes! Now that's what I was looking for! I have become wary of the now way overdone artisan doughnut shops that have plagued the DC area. I can't seem to find one that's not Dunkin' Donuts in the District that's just good old-fashioned doughnuts. No fancy over the top, hybrid doughnuts with strange flavors. I just want a regular maple cake doughnut or a cinnamon cake doughnut with flavor and softness in every bite that dreams are made of. I found that at Paul's which is right down the street from where I will be moving a few months. This may be trouble but I welcome it! Reminds me of Winchell's, a place I used to frequent in my California hometown. The service is friendly and they have all sorts of goodies. I cannot wait to try their pies! Don't go here expecting bright eyed, bushy tailed service! I love their products, but after yesterday's experience, I think I'm going to find a bakery closer to where I live in Glen Allen. I arrived at 5:22. They close at 6. Someone was sweeping at the front entrance and continued to sweep around me. I immediately saw what I came in for near the front of the store, petit fours. I wanted to price petit fours and pies for a Christmas party. I saw the box for $35. No one asked if I needed assistance, but I walked to the front counter and asked, "How much are the petit fours?" The reply: "It's on the box." I had seen the box(es) with labels on them. I didn't know how many were in each box, if there were other sizes, etc. So I asked, "Do you have a price listing?" The response was, "No". So I asked, "How many are in a box? The reply: "I don't know". I left. If this was the only thing they sold it would still make it the best bakery I have ever been too. The great thing is there are just as delicious as they always have been. I love this place. My family has been coming here for 30+ years. They have a large selection (for better selection you need to come in the morning as it decreases as they sell out). Everything is fresh and delicious. My favorite are the cinnamon twist and coconut donuts. They also have an amazing key lime pie. I worked at a local hospital and from time to time they would bring (still warm!!) cinnamon/raisin glaze donuts to the ER staff in the early morning. Thank you, Yelpers, for pointing me to this fantastic donut shop. My friend and I came two hours before closing so we missed out on the gourmet donuts (maple bacon and cronuts), but we still got to try some of Paul's other offerings. We each ordered a half dozen and filled our boxes with a mix of glazed and filled donuts. For me, I got the coconut, original glazed (2), chocolate custard and cinnamon hole. Their original glazed donut is very similar to Krispy Kreme, which is a good thing. Despite coming later in the day, everything still seemed very fresh. Many of the most popular items had sold out long before our arrival. In addition to enjoying their donuts, I was pleased to find the shop workers very sweet and accommodating. Paul's also has southern Virginia prices, which is great. Definitely worth stopping by in if you're in the area. read more

Since moving to Fredericksburg in May of this year, we've picked up donuts here now several times and never had a bad experience - and they were fresh, regardless of what time of day we dropped in. I noticed a few folks complaining about the level of service and lack of friendliness - well, I suspect they were showing up there mid-afternoon because by then these folks have been been up and at work for probably 10-12 hours - I'm not sure I'd be bushy tailed after that either - but not once have I been there that I was not greeted with a smile and friendly attitude and patient service while we ogled the goods - the pressure to make a decision really comes from those behind you in line. The Sour Cream donuts are the best IMO - but I'm sure the others are very good. Sour Cream donuts can be difficult to find at some bakeries and Paul's makes several variations. AND they have a Maple Bacon donut that might work for most but I was underwhelmed - I love donuts and I love bacon but not sure the two should be piled on each other, especially with a maple flavor (now CHOCOLATE, I'd try!). Other's I'm sure would disagree. Prices are reasonable and about what you'd expect for donuts but the cakes seem fairly pricey - as does the bread, limited selection. Have not tried either of those. Old fashioned bakeries are increasingly disappearing from the map so we're lucky to have one - it's either Paul's or Wal-Mart (or Entemanns) - I chose Paul's. read more

Paul's Bakery isn't bad but it's not Krispy Kreme. My coworkers swear by this place. I came here on Valentine's Day because they were offering free Red Velvet Donuts. I got the Red Velvet and I also got the regular glazed and a glazed donut with chocolate and sprinkles. They were all ok. My fiancé wasn't super impressed either. I may stop by and try more flavors as Valentines Day was my first time trying then. I'll stop by at least one more time and try the other flavors and see if any are better than the ones we had. read more

None of the over-the-top crazy creations, but just good pies, cookies, bread, cake, doughnuts, etc. The doughnuts are usually all we buy, and they are always fresh, fluffy, perfectly sweet, and delicious. I would give 5 stars, but the service isn't as wonderful as the goods. Never greeted and I am always rushed to decide what I want, but you can't know without looking in the case to see what is left. I had high hopes for Paul's based on the reviews but unfortunately the donuts just didn't cut it. We tried 6 -- iced chocolate, chocolate buttercream, chocolate custard, glazed twist, maple ring, and apple cinnamon. Also had 6 powdered holes and 6 glazed holes. The glazed donuts were the best of the lot but no better than Krispy Kreme. For the iced ones -- the chocolate icing was pretty good but the actual donut tasted exactly like Dunkin. The powdered holes were falling apart and did not taste good. We also picked up 4 cinnamon rolls which were very dry. Needless to say we were totally bummed and disappointed!! Now - we also got a blueberry pie, and it was really really good. Can't beat the price either. That's why I'm giving 3 stars. I'll come back for pie, but my search for a good donut continues... read more

The past several times I've came here, they've had our favorite flavors of donuts!!!! Good job Paul's Bakery!!!! If we were ever to move, you'd be one of the places we'd dearly miss forever and ever. Maple bacon - pretty good!!!!! The bacon is crisp!!!! But I still prefer a donut with chocolate frosting over this. Apple fritter - this was a really fun treat to try. It was huge!!! But it was a little lacking in the apple chunks. Needs more apple and the apple needs to be distributed evenly because half of my donut didn't have apple. Red velvet and blueberry - these are cake donuts. Good but I always prefer yeasted donuts. Powdered jelly holes - wow, they do not skimp on the jelly and that's awesome. They replaced their registers with ipads. Way cool! No minimum with credit card purchase! The nice young white girl who took my order offered me coffee. I don't drink coffee but it was very nice! The older ladies are always pleasant as well. I don't care much for service because it's just a donut shop. However, this young black girl at the counter was SUPER SOUR. Not only that, she didn't know what I meant when I said "old fashion glazed" and instead of asking me, she gave me the wrong donut, which I discovered when I got home. BOOOOO. I was jonesing for that particular donut! Not only that, she mumbled everything she said in a very low voice and we could not freaken hear her. It wasn't even busy or loud inside the store. Again, I don't expect much service at a donut shop. Service has always been good or better all other times. Anyway, there are lots of other people behind the register. I think the sour one may have helped me before but I'm not sure. If that was her, she was pleasant the first time (she was being trained at the time). So I don't know what went wrong. Also, they charge $1.25/donut, $6 for 6 donuts and $10.75 for a dozen donuts; that's cheaper than the other donut guys out there.
