Absolutely the worst hamburger ever zero taste, the bun was ice cold the service was horrible. I went in there for 5 o'clock this afternoon. The only person in the place other than a table full of girls look like they work there my burger was served the waitress sat down, to the girl that had cooked my hamburger. My friends and I were on our way to Orlando when we couldn't decide what to eat. After searching through yelp for 20 minutes we stumbled upon Paul's kitchen which had a wide assortment of foods which would satisfy the picky crew. Arriving at the restaurant we were the only customers. We ordered appetizers and our meals quickly, getting water too. It did not take long for the appetizers to get to us and they were large portions. The sampler platter is enough to be a full meal. When we got our meals and they were also very huge portions. Between the salads, soups, sides and entree it is enough food for a lunch and dinner. There was a mistake when one of the entrees was brought out, but the mistake was corrected and a new meal was brought out in about 5-10 minutes. The quality of food was decent. It was nothing to write home about, but for the portion sizes it was great. The pricing was incredibly worth it, with the average cost being about $11 for the massive meal sizes. We've visited lots of small diners as we've traveled around the USA. They're much more fun than chain restaurants and you never know what to expect. Paul's Kitchen is off the main drag. It's what used to be a house. There's a private lot off the side and a sign in front. We parked in the back of the lot figuring we'd leave via the alley in the back. Well, be careful of that. The potholes are huge and I do mean HUGE down that alley and there are lots of those deep potholes. There were four of us for dinner. We sat for a while before we were asked about drinks. Servers weren't particularly friendly. Normally your small diners have the friendliest of servers so we were a little surprised at the cool personalities. Other than a long wait for our drink order to be taken and no offer of refills, service was okay. At our table there were orders for catfish and shrimp and also for their philly cheesesteak sandwiches. The meals came with soup, salad, potato, rice, corn and your main entree. It was quite a feast. Soup was pretty bland and salad was nothing special. However, catfish and shrimp were very good. Daily specials were handwritten and added to the menu. We like to stop at Paul's Kitchen when we travel through Wauchula. It's got lots of fried food but also a few grilled items, too. Not a fancy place, in fact a little on the old Florida funky side but for those of you who like a little of that you might want to try it. Today they had lots of specials at reasonable cost especially given the portion sizes. I ordered grilled chicken and shrimp, yellow rice and green beans. All good, but they really believe in butter. Not necessarily a bad thing, just be forewarned. My husband had chicken parmigiana on a bed (king size bed!) Of spaghetti and got enough to feed 3 people. He said it was very good. Note, the chicken was not typical; it was crispy fried chicken cutlet, but tasty. And on another trip I ordered sweet potato fries. They had some kind of flour coating on them. So I've learned to ask questions before I assume things here. The best part is enjoying the feel of a local non-chain restaurant where most of the guests seem to know each other. hamburgers were way overcooked took forever to get served even though there we're only a couple people in the restaurant eating one person eating with us was supposed to get a salad with his fish. The last few times I have gone up to pick up my food they have gotten the orders wrong. They insisted we bring the order back which we did, and they took it back and replaced it but with an attitude like we were wrong. Second chance around they didn't believe that they messed up our order and wanted us to send then a picture "who does that"? What happened to customer service??? They also forgot to give me my tea. Off the main road and set behind greenery so except for seeing the sign would not have known it was a restaurant. There were no cars in the parking lot, but the sign said Open and there was writing on the whiteboard attached to place so we said , what the heck let's try it. Appears to be a house that was gutted and made into a restaurant. We were greeted promptly and sat, ok we were the only ones in there. While there another couple did come in ,we went right around5:00. I saw stuffed cabbage as a special and hubby got the blt. Portions were really large! Had heard about Paul's Kitchen at the campground we are staying at. We asked another couple if they wanted to give it a try with us. Off the beaten path, in a house. All orders seem to come with their homemade soup. It was vegetable when we were there, excellent. You also get bread and a healthy sized side salad. My honey ordered the chicken Parmesan which came with spaghetti and garlic bread. Nice thing here is they asked him if he wanted his chicken fried or grilled. Very nice to have that option. It was served in a cast iron skillet. Only $8.99. The other couple ordered two of the specials. One was the stuffed grouper, stuffed with crab. This one came with choice of potato and rice and corn. The other ordered the grilled grouper. She chose a baked sweet potato, also came with rice and corn. They both said their meals were excellent. I think those were about $12. I ordered the 10 oz rib eye special for $14.99. They cooked it to perfection. I had a baked potato and yes, it also came with rice and corn. Service was wonderful, food was superb and the prices were right. We are in this area for two weeks. We will definitely be back. Probably will try them for breakfast as well. My boyfriend and I recently dined at Paul's Kitchen. We were in town for a friend's wedding and were looking for a local spot to eat! We found this place and it had solid reviews so we decided to check it out. We walked up and the reviews weren't kidding, it does look like a house! We actually missed it and had to turn around haha we walked inside and the decor is kind of a mish-mosh of items, but I kind of loved it to be honest. It's definitely a casual location and seems to have its regulars that all the servers knew. The waitress recommended me an item, I honestly had to pick at it. It was so heavyyyyyy. I think it was called the farmers skillet. It had gravy and gravy and more gravy. The eggs were good, but I really couldn't eat too much of it. I also never received the biscuit! I was really looking for it as a way to break up the heaviness and the waitress never stopped by during our meal for me to ask. Overall, it was a small thing but I think it would've made the meal better for me. The coffee was actually really good in my opinion! The waitress was nice, but halfway through someone else started serving us so that also got kind of confusing haha my boyfriend actually really liked his meal which is why I'm ultimately giving this location 3 stars. All in all, I wish I had ordered something different so maybe I would've liked this place more. Not worth the stop. I love All-American diners and home style Southern food but this missed the mark all around. Two of my guys had the Country Fried Steak. Both said is was okay at best and the sides (rice, corn, and mashed potatoes) were not warm when served. Our teen son ordered a burger and said it tasted like McDonald's (not a compliment from him.) The biggest disappointment was the "Stuffed Grouper" special. It was a scoop of bready filling that tasted like it came from a box draped in a flavorless paper-thin slice of overcooked grouper. The fried pickles and fried green tomatoes were good but nothing special; the house salad and soup as well. No beer or wine. I'm a big city eater but love to eat down-home local just as much so this isn't a "food snob" review. Just not enough good here to ever consider stopping again. read more

For a comfort food diner it's a four-star experience. Portions are large, for my taste a little too large but come hungry. It was nice that the meals included soup. My company tends to send me to remote places and small towns on business, but that allows me to try out local eats that would I never otherwise. I love small town diners and Paul's was a good/safe yelp choice for Wauchula. People tell me that there isn't much non-chain food options in Wauchula, so i was excited to try this place out. It looks like they converted a house to create this restaurant. Stepping in you instantly feel the southern Americana vibe about the place. And I was happy the place was busy, so you know that this a local's favorite. There was a mix of folks that were from out of town there seeing family, a couple of construction folks, and some office people. I ordered the country fried steak. It was a nice serving and the brown gravy tasted delicious. I'd love to get a side order of the gravy and dip my french fries in there. My co-worker ordered the fried chicken which looked amazing as well. Super crispy and a good country standard. It also came with green beans and rice, and another starch of choice. Everything was pretty good as you would expect from a down home country diner. Our only problem was our waiter unfortunately. When we asked her what was good here, she responded with "I only started yesterday, and I didn't really get to try any of the food. But most things 'look' pretty good" Which I thought was a weird answer. I mean, I don't know much about the restaurant business, but you would think the owner would school her on what items to sell or what specials they are known for from their customers. Or ask one of her colleagues of a recommendation would be. Then of course, she got our order wrong on the first attempt, but thank goodness the manager/owner? corrected it and compted the error on the bill. My wife & I made the mistake of ordering grouper. I can say almost certainly that it wasn't grouper. It tasted more like tilapia. We eat grouper often down in the keys. Fresh grouper is usually $15lb or more. Our meals had fish, string beans, baked potato, tasteless rice, salad & soup on special for $11.99. The price was too good to be true. My girlfriend and I found this restaurant through a recommendation from our tour guide ( an expedition on the Peace River). The restaurant is housed in a former residence just off of Main Street. We were greeted very warmly upon entering. The place is very clean and informal. The cuisine is Southern U.S. We started with the fried pickles and wings. Soup (lentil) was served from a clean communal kettle. The wings were fried with a nice crispy batter. The pickles tasted awesome. We both ordered the chicken fried steak. The chicken fried steak with white gravy was awesome! Great layers of fried goodness wrapped around meat... The mashed potatoes that accompanied the steak were homemade and tasty. The waitress who served us was very polite and quick with service. The only downside is that beer is not served, hence a star was taken off. That meal would have been even better with a cold beer! Went here for dinner. You could smell the food as you walk up to the place. We gotta tall skinny brunette waitress. She had a very friendly cute smile. Very polite and very helpful with the menu. It looks like nothing has been done maintenance wise other than a coat of paint in over 10 years and it really needs it!!! It really could be cute. The place was pretty busy when we walked in and but we were seated right away. Our table was right next to a window A/C unit that had not been cleaned of dust and dirt EVER!!!! Our waitress was having a hard time with another table so it took a while for her to come around to us. But Tanya acknowledged us and one of the girls got our drink order. When Tanya came over she apologized again for the delay, we ordered the corn nuggets (or fritters as I am used to calling them) and fried mushrooms. The apps were really good!! I don't know if they make the corn nuggets in house but they were really yummy. The fried mushrooms were also really good and they were huge mushrooms. The coating for the shrooms was a little odd in our opinion. It seemed like a modified fish fry coating...but it was a large order and tasted great. For our dinners, our daughter ordered the bacon cheese burger with fries and hubby and I both ordered the fried chicken and I asked for a side of brown gravy for my fries, I thought it'd be good gravy since it was served on quite a few other dishes. Our dinners come with a self serve soup (???yes weird) and salad and rice and veg and potato option...wow all this food for like $10??!!!???!! Wow! That's where the excitement ended!!! The soup was a chicken noodle, it was SO thick from corn starch or flour being added and the flavor was like pure chicken bullion. The noodles were shells and they were so bloated from sitting around for hours that they were just mush. So no soup was really eaten. Our salads came out and the lettuce was a little bit bigger than a shredded size and it was topped with shredded cheddar cheese and tiny croutons. This we could live with. Dinner arrives, our daughters burger is obviously over cooked just by looking at it and the bun was falling apart after cutting the burger in half. When she bit into it is was VERY WELL DONE and DRY!!! Our dinners come out and sure enough the weird fish fry coating that was used on the shrooms is now on our chicken and it is SOOOO salty and has an odd fish flavor to it. So the coating is kind of pulled off so we can at least eat some of the chicken. All the sides that come with our dinner....the veggie is known as a 5 way (sold from US Foods or Sysco) it's usually frozen or canned and it's a mix of peas, carrots, corn, green beans, lima beans. Because the veggie was prepped a while a go it was tasteless and mushy, the BRIGHT yellow rice is so over seasoned with cumin and some other spice that it's just awful and inedible. The gravy had to have salt and pepper added to it so it could have some taste and a few drops of water since it had the consistency of pudding. So in the end out of the 1/2 a chicken that I ordered I ate most of one breast with next to no coating and my husband ate one leg out of his 1/2 a chicken, none of the veggies and none of the rice. Half of my fries were undercooked as were my husbands. And our daughter had 3 bites of her burger and then gave up, eating the bacon and a few fries. I can safely say we will never eat here again. And after leaving Paul's we noticed the fast food joints in town were PACKED!! Now we know why....It's really sad when a Greek opens a restaurant and does so just to make money not for the love of giving people GOOD FOOD!! read more
