Still amazing as always. Paul is wonderful and suggests great recommendations to add to the dishes. The coffee was top tier this time, my husband loved it, great taste even for someone like me who typically avoids high caffeine. If it's anything I can hammer down on, please please please text to inquire on reservations!

Dining at Paul's Place felt like a very special treat each time we ate there during a recent visit to Hilo. The food was creative, delicious, healthy, and beautifully presented. We enjoyed the Breakfast Caprese, Pasta de Marco, and Smoked Salmon Benedict. The table settings were charming in a country cottage way, reflecting the same careful attention to detail as the food and the service. Paul's warm hospitality and delightful sense of humor made us feel at home and well cared for, leaving us with not only satisfied tummies but also happy souls as we started our days. Dining here was definitely a highlight of our trip, and we look forward to coming back.

YOU MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS AHEAD OF TIME !!!!! Reserve ahead of time or you most likely won't get seated. There's very limited seating inside maybe 3 tables at most. Everything is cooked in the small kitchen so dishes come out 1 by 1. I ordered the breakfast caprese and it was quite delicious. Blistered tomatoes with 2 eggs cheese zucchini onion Kalamata olives on a crostini. Very fresh and seasoned well. You can't go wrong with fresh ingredients. Knocking off a star since it was a bit pricey for what you get. Overall it was a lovely experience. Very intimate setting.

A year ago we came to the island and walked into Paul's place. Without a reservation, we didn't eat but it was the kindest rejection of our lives. Paul is as personable, kind and genuine as they come. This year, on Valentines's we were able to enjoy his restaurant after making a reservation. The experience was above and beyond what we could have ever imagined. Threes tables and one hot plate. Every meal is cooked to order and delicious. I joked he ruined every other restaurant for us. The waitress is also the best manners and kind. When we visit another island my husband and I already said we'd island hop just to see Paul again.

Quaint cute brunch place in Hilo next to the Farmer's Market. Make a reservation in advance as there are only 3 tables in the restaurant. Paul is a one man show! Felt like I was a guest in his house. Friend and I shared the Belgian waffle and his specialty Pasta de Marco. Waffle was crispy, fluffy and light topped with strawberries and banana. Pasta de Marco was a crust of angel hair pasta with smoked salmon, tomato, capers, olives, feta topped with arugula. Very unique and tasty dish!

All thanks to my coworker, we were talking about Hilo and how he looks forward to his visit at Paul's Place, he recommends this biz. I searched Yelp and bookmarked PP. During February, I had no luck with getting a reservation but luckily a last minute trip to the Big Island this past weekend, I got a 1 pm time slot, Yay, I'll take it. Which was perfect as I got more time to explore Hilo before breakfast and got to check out the shops and farmer's market nearby. I love it when the stars aligned! Keep in mind, the restaurant is very small & cute, only 3 tables and run by chef/owner Paul, reservations are totally recommended. Love the fun, charming decor Paul mentioned the decors are done by his girls. while waiting for our meals, I noticed Paul prepares meals with just 1 skillet and 1 burner, in his cute little kitchen space. Wow. he got great cooking skills! Since we already had breakfast and were still stuffed, we tried and opt for lunch options, a few of the items on the menu were sold out, got 2 entrees: Pasta De Marco and Fish Bowl and they were Amazing dishes. Pasta de Marco ( $24.95) I've never had anything similar to this entree ever, I loved it. Everything on this plate went so well together and cake noodle but Italian style, wow! Fish Bowl is market price ($29.95) reminds of a stew/cioppino, comes with shrimp and fresh fish of the day which is Mahi Mahi, on bed of pasta and bread. As I was eating this, it brought back memories of Mama's Fish House, everything taste so fresh in that bowl of goodness! The famous waffles, we were super stuffed and only could have a few bites! Omg, fresh crispy Belgium waffles with fruits and just the right amount of sauce, not too sweet. I loved this, never had waffles for the longest time and it hit the spot. The last waffles I had was the frozen Belgium waffles from Costco, hehe years ago. Thank you Chef Paul & his one staff team, it was really nice meeting and chatting with you! He is super friendly, before dining at Paul's I was kind of scared/shy due to me being anti social at times but don't worry he is really a cool super nice guy! Totally recommend, you can THANK me later as I will be thanking my coworker for the recommendation, when he is back from Summer break! As of now, I am texting Chef Paul to get me in for next month, hehe. I want to try the benedict, need more Pasta De Marco and waffles tooooo!!

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED to this tiny restaurant with just two tables! Really enjoyed the fantastic breakfast here at Paul's Place. I had a stack of Belgium waffles that were topped with lots of fruit and came with heated syrup. I added on bacon and it came out just like I like it, extra crispy! My wife had the eggs benedict that Paul admitted was non-traditional, but the egg was poached perfectly and was paired with lots of veggies and fruit. Best part of our breakfast was the service. Paul and his staff engage with everyone like they're family or longtime friends. Prices are a tad high, but each dish is hand made fresh and he takes his time to make sure you're satisfied with your meal. Please remember to text him for reservations so you aren't turned away, I believe he takes up to a week in advance.

You need a reservation or some luck. This place is minutes from Hilo airport and a remarkable place to eat... if you can get in. The food is remarkable and Paul, the owner/chef is a treasure. The problem is the restaurant has only three 2-person tables. I had their Smoked Salmon Benedict. It was soooo tasty. Everything was fresh. I also tasted some of the lightest-yet-still-with-some-crunchiness Belgian Waffle I've ever had. And the coffee was remarkable, even for Hawai'i. If you're flying into Hilo, you're minutes away from Paul's Place. Do yourself a favor and make this place your first stop on the way to Volcanos National Park (or whatever you're doing). It's a great way to start your day.

Always make reservations in advance if you want to eat here. I saw at least 10 groups of people get turned away. This place is a gem and Paul is such a nice and creative fellow that cooks with heart. On our table of three, we had the Belgian waffles, pasta de Marco and the Caprese breakfast. The waffles were nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - served with whipped cream, banana and strawberries. Chef's pasta de Marco is such a different dish for breakfast, but a wonderful surprise - angel hair pasta cooked with olive oil and held together with an egg; and topped with pesto, Mediterranean green olives, bits of bacon, salmon and more (comes with 2 pieces of bread). The Caprese breakfast had assorted tomatoes, mozzarella, fried egg on a crostini with bacon and assorted fruits and radish. Overall, service is always excellent, food is so delicious and I love how small and intimate this place feels. I look forward to coming here again when visiting Hilo.

Just simply fabulous!! (Is that an oxymoron?). Small place which made it even better ..and the dishes Paul prepared were soooo good! Each was personalized and prepared fresh that one dish came at a time which was fine with us! It was worth ignoring that table etiquette and we dove right in to the food. The flavors were fantastic and blended so there was just the right amount of "yeah, that's a Benedict" and "wow!..didn't know a Benedict could taste like that!". GO! You will not regret it! So... the added strawberry on top of the waffle...hehe..was it was my 60th birthday we were celebrating in Hilo and when Paul and his niece maybe (?) found out, I was given the "queen" treatment complete with a tiara and birthday sash to take with, and presented with a birthday waffle plate that was one of the most special experiences in this 60th year of life so far! Thank you from the bottom of my heart ., to the top of my happy stomach for such a wonderful gift!

Paul's Place has an ambience that will make you want to say "Home! Sweet home!" The service was equally as exceptional as their Belgian Waffles. My waitress was extremely sweet and had made sure that my cup was brimming with water from my arrival to my leave. Be sure to bring your tip money in cash, as they do not accept credited tip. What a Great small well run, and charming 3 table upscale Resturant down the street from the Farmers market. I believe reservations are required, but you will not be disappointed in the ambiance, or the culinary execution, along with a very engaging Chef , Owners.. Priceless.. Smallest restaurant I've ever been. Three 2-3 person tables. One chef and one server. Coffee brewed for each customer. Best waffle I've ever had in my life. You should make a reservation. I will definitely go again. read more

What kind of restaurant only has three tables? Literally they have three tables. We were turned away at the door and told they only seat by reservation. For breakfast!!! They could call us back when they had space but that would be over an hour. Ridiculous. Ken's House of Pancakes got another day of business from us after this debacle. This is the only negative experience we have had on our entire trip. read more

Deserves 6stars! Paul really takes care of his customers like they are family. The ingredients are fresh and bought from the farmers market down the street daily. (I know, because I see him making trips there to get stuff!). It's only three tables but the food, service, and wait is definitely worth it. I would recommend calling in to make a reservation. I've been here 5 times in the short time I've been in Hilo and have never been disappointed. His attention to detail shines when you dine here and you just can't beat the freshness and the flavor. Keep doing what you do, Paul! read more

Was in Hilo yesterday and we knew we wanted to go back to Paul's Place. As always, we were not disappointed! Our go to favorites are the Eggs Benedict and the Belgium Waffle...we get one of each and share. The food was even better than the usual amazing that I swear I could have eaten both myself and not have felt guilty! I have eaten there on several occasions with friends and they declared Paul's to be there new fave breakfast/lunch spot. It doesn't hurt that the service is always incredibly friendly and they are so very accommodating. I enjoy that Paul sings to his favorite songs while he is cooking :) Great ambience! read more

Amazing breakfast! Paul's Place is a cute little restaurant with three tables that plays Michael Buble music. Very charming and cutely decorated. Make reservations!!!! We got lucky and were able to get in without them but many other people got turned away because they didn't have one and the tables were full. I wanted a hot chocolate which I guess they don't normally make but told me they would make it and it was delicious! Service was excellent throughout the meal and very attentive as it is a small restaurant. I had the waffle with fresh fruit on top (they get their produce at the nearby farmer's market) and my husband had the eggs Benedict. We were both thoroughly impressed with out meal. A must go if you are visiting Hilo! read more

I finally tried this place because Yelp's reviews were so high. It lived up to my expectations and was definitely tasty. What you should know: - There are only 3 tables inside so make sure you hit it on a weekday when it isn't going to be slammed. - The menu is very small for breakfast. - It's located in the downstairs section of the Pakalana Inn. (http://www.pakalanainn.com/) I didn't realize that at first and it's possible someone might want by it without realizing it since it is a small space. I was disappointed because I wanted to try the Eggs Benedict but I do not like anything with mayo in it. I asked about the hollandaise sauce and was told that they have a different recipe that does, in fact, use mayo. I am sure I could have asked for the dish without the sauce, but the waffles sounded equally as delicious and I didn't want to be a pain. I ordered tea and they gave it to me in a big mug. They accommodated my request for honey and the chef checked on us to make sure I liked my meal. This is definitely a great place to try if you want a mellow, tasty spot for brunch. read more

This is hands down my favorite breakfast or brunch spot on the big island and perhaps in all the world. It seems silly to say you can taste the aloha in the food but if you've ever been you'll know exactly what I'm saying. The food is AMAZING. The service is out of this world. Make sure you make reservations! It's a small homey place and it's amazing like that. Seriously the best. EVER. read more

love love love Paul's place. it's super tiny so that can get a little uncomfortable but it's totally made up for with the food! the fish bowl is so good, a little spicy. but still delicious. eggs Benedict is awesome, especially since Paul changes up the ingredients with whatever is good at the farmers market. a Belgian waffle and large French press coffee are also a must when visiting uncle Paul's. read more

Sign out front says they open at 7am. Inside they said 7:30. They also do not do carry-out, contrary to Yelp's information. People seemed quite nice and I've no doubt the food would be excellent, if I ever got to sample it. read more

What a find. Thank you Yelp! We never would have found this fantastic cafe on our own. Very intimate and small but huge on food quality and presentation. We tried the Caprese Napoleon, which was lovely, and the Fish Bowl. I could have paid double what we did and still thought it a bargain. The presentation was beautiful and the favors superb. Paul was very friendly and his dedication to food really shines. Paul's Place will, from this time on, be our place to go in Hilo. Back again in December 2014' just as good!!!!! read more

Tried this place after a friend recommended it. Its a very cozy place with 3 tables that seat 2 people per table. I recommend making a reservation because of the limited space. I tried the Fish Bowl and it was DELICIOUS! I loved the capers and Greek olives. Paul was very friendly and joked around with us a lot which made the overall experience that much better. I would definitely go back to try their breakfast or other lunch items! read more

Thought it was crazy to make reservations for breakfast at a "hole in the wall" but so glad we did. Paul's is the place!! Only 3 tables (2 more than he wanted I'm told) so the place fills up quick. If your name's not on the list you'll be told firmly, but politely, "sorry Braddah.... no soup for you today. Wanna reserve for tomorrow?" Say yes and be there! read more

Ah-mazing breakfast. Tried to visit yesterday but all the tables were taken, Paul told us to come back today and had our table all ready at 9am. Friendly service with a big smile! The house water is flavored with cucumber and lemon, and though the glasses are small they were very attentive about refilling them. Definitely make a reservation if possible. Our party of 5 ordered the regular eggs Benedict, the smoked salmon Benedict, the Belgian waffle, a fresh fruit smoothie and the yogurt parfait. All were excellent. Waffle was sweet and fluffy, served with fruit, didn't even need syrup, though syrup comes on the side in a little pitcher. The smoked salmon Benedict came with asparagus and tomato, on French bread, plus fresh fruit. I don't like smoked salmon very much, but this dish was to die for, not overly smoky and the flavors really well-balanced. For a savory breakfast this is probably the best thing Ive ever eaten! My son ordered it and he was very stingy with it- he wanted it all to himself! The smoothie was made with parsley and mint and was very clean and refreshing. The yogurt parfait was light and flavorful, topped with delicious local honey. Next time I might ask about getting the yogurt parfait on top of the waffle for a decadent treat! read more

This is an intimate worth waiting for seating. I go often but reservations usually are mandatory if expect to get seated. While there two groups were turned away for lack of seating and without reservations. Ignore their reviews. Once seated the staff is amazing and the food in-paralleled. Chef Paul holds his own over any place on the island. Skip the attitude and ho-hum presentation from other venues. While I don't eat meat they will accommodate my preferences with style and amazing food that makes the palette dance. Sit and listen to other guest - "I'm in love" or "OMG" are not uncommon - really. Wow! Paul's place is so delicious - I had the breakfast caprese and the Belgian waffles, both were out of this world! Paul cooks your meals and checks in to make sure it is to your liking, he is a very sweet and talented man. This breakfast/lunch spot is very exclusive, only three tables- YOU MUST MAKE A RESERVATION. NO TAKE OUT- a definite treat in Hilo. wow. I've been staying in Hilo for 6 weeks for work and my per diem means that I have had the (amazing) opportunity to eat at most of the restaurants in town. This is by far the best. It's freaking charming with delicious food! My only gripe is that they aren't open EVERY day of the week! read more

Probably the best Belgian waffle I've ever had. Very small spot, good for a party of two, not for large groups. I've been here just a few times and I've never been disappointed. Ingredients are fresh. Only downside is if you don't have reservations, be prepared to wait a while as the place only seats 10 people...if that. Super cool little breakfast nook. Very nice interior. Paul's place is perfect for a couples wanting an intimate little breakfast and lunch. Has an old hotel feel. Only three tables. Call ahead for a reservations. Really good fresh eclectic food. Located within walking distance of farmers market and downtown shopping. Highly recommended. read more

Paul's cafe is amazing! You won't want to be in a rush, call and make a reservation, and enjoy! The food is fresh and so, so delicious! Fresh produce from the farmers market next door, everything is made to order by Paul. After you can walk around the marketplace or drive to Akaka falls! The place seats a maximum of 6 people so there are no service issues. Nevertheless it's worth mentioning that the staff is super nice and friendly. My husband and I had the eggs Benedict with bacon and the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. Both were delicious! Probably the best I've ever had. They don't use hollandaise sauce, so the dish feels lighter and healthier. I would definitely come there again! read more

Being our first adventure out since Landing, we chose Paul's down by the Farmer's Market in Hilo. We had to wait for a table (only 4 in the Restaurant), but sooooo worth it! Paul and his side kick sang Christmas Caroles that came on the radio, were super attentive to our needs, and so darned hospitable! Then....THEN CAME THE FISH BOWL... Oh, righteous deliciousness! Hubby and I shared it and couldn't have been more delighted. The fresh garlic, the fresh basil and then there was the fish. OH... yes, the fish! It was the first taste of the island that we had. It has been hard to top, but so worth it! The pressed coffee was damn good, too! read more

Paul's Place is a gem. My wife and I were able to squeak in without a reservation one weekday morning, but from what I understand you'd better get a reservation if you want to eat here. The food and hospitality was off the charts. My wife had the Belgian waffle (which was the best waffle either of us had ever had) and I had the off-menu eggs benedict, which was more of an Italian flavor than the traditional. It featured cherry tomatoes, olives, basil, olive oil, garlic, bacon, and eggs on a crostini. This is a don't miss place in Hilo. read more

Cute little cafe, food is freshly prepared and tasty, service is attentive. Note, use the restroom before you go, there is no public restroom on premise, they send you to a gas station a block away. This is the reason for the 3 stars vs 4 read more

I've been here a few times and never had a bad experience. I've eaten the waffles, fish bowl, and eggs Benedict. All very delicious! The wait staff is extremely friendly and the food fresh! The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is due to their prices. It's quite a bit overpriced, but I guess you are paying for the food being made to order, fresh ingredients, and the classy decor. read more

They were right. The cook/waiter told us to get the waffles. I however got the salmon with poached egg which was amazing. But the rest of my family got the waffles. They were the lightest most amazing waffles ever. There are only three little tables so you'll have to call in are come early for a seat. We ended up talking about movies with the waiter/cook he is very charming! read more

Instead of standing around, I went back to the car and hung out with BIL and watched for the people who were before me to get their orders and leave. I waited outside for about 5 minutes before they called my name and my mochi order was ready to go. There were some tourists who came by who didn't want to wait for 30 minutes and were ready to turn around and leave, but I told them there were ready made packages that they could grab and go, the rest of us were waiting on custom orders. They were really happy to hear that and they bought their mochi and headed out. I will definitely call ahead next time I go to Hilo, the wait is small kine humbug, but the mochi is oh so ono! (translated: the wait is an inconvenience, but the mochi is very delicious).

We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.

My first and only time here I was invited by friends who are regulars, I was a bit worried bout it's small home like area as it only has a few tables and they do not do take outs. However u will quickly find out why! Paul is great! Greeted with a warm Hawaiian style morning aloha he made the rather small dinning area accompanying with wonderful service, he is the owner and personal chef just for you! I had the Benedict! Presented in a five star cuisine fashion with flavor fusions that tantalize every savory taste bud u own any dish will surely satisfy! The small charm will lure u back for more, those who know make reservations and u may get turned away if the dinning is full, but trust that upon return Paul will justify the wait with worthy service and culinary skill........ It's been two days since we've visited and I'm still raving about this place. Been island hopping for over a month now and I'm not kidding this place has been my favorite memory. The setting was so charming and the food was beyond five star. My boyfriend even ordered an additional item on the menu and said he would rather fill himself with Paul's food than get lunch. Paul was so amazing and definitely gave us the aloha welcome. We are in Maui now, his home place and thinking about him. We love you Paul! Im a big foodie and I've tried smoked salmon all over California but Paul's salmon in Hilo, Hawaii has beat them all. I think I've written only one review on yelp but I had to write about Paul's Place because I'm in love. I hope that my review provides him with the patronism he deserves. read more

The place is really small, only three tables, so reservations are a good idea. My husband and I didn't have reservations but they took our name down and called us when a table opened up. It didn't take long. We wandered around downtown to pass the time. When they called they offered to have a cup of coffee or juice waiting for us which is a nice touch. Okay, so the food....AMAZING!! My husband had a Benedict and he said its one of the best he's had (and he's had a lot of benedicts). I had the waffles per Paul's recommendation. Wow! Oven ever had waffles like these. Paul said they were "made by angels" that day. Boy was he right. Magnificent- the word I would use to describe them. Oh, and the service is excellent too! read more

Paul cozy restaurant serves up delightful dishes like pasco de marco, eggs benedict, and Belgian waffles. It's amazing that he runs it with his niece alone! The charming atmosphere adds to the experience, making it a must-visit spot for foodies looking for both great food and ambiance. read more

Paul's Place is as everyone says awesome! Come here for the best breakfast on the Big Island. Paul is a real person and does all the cooking. Supa ono sup a friendly staff. read more

Amazing service! We chatted with two people working there, and they gave great advice and places to go in Hilo. The coffee is delicious.

We arrived at 1:40 and closed with a sign that says open until 2:00. Update your yelp hours and close when you say you do!!!
