Zero stars! I prepaid, then got to the counter and they charged twice as much in fees!! One day rental cost me $226.00!

I had nearly an identical situation as Kim M. did. This company and/or location is running a scam. DO NOT USE THEM.

DO NOT rent a car from Payless. I have tried for months to get them to call me back. I finally called the Better Business Bureau and they have Payless as a 'F' rating. BBB told me they will not answer their phone nor will they call you back even if you leave a message. They have a 'F' rating because they don't care. I can't believe a business doesn't care about their customers but Payless totally showed they don't. Shame on them. When I go back to Alburquerque next year I will NOT rent a car from them. and I advise you contact the BBB before you rent from anybody. read more

We were given a car with no air in the tires. Had to wait a long time before they found a drivable car. You might pay less but you get less.

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. I called 4 hours before I was supposed to pick up my car to ask where I could park, got an answering machine saying to expect a call back in 15 minutes. They never called. Went to pick up the car, and they REQUIRE proof of insurance & a power bill which was never told to me in my travelocity reservation. So they told me to go back to my car, drive home, and my refusal to do so (because of time limitations) basically meant they refused my business. It's my turn. I REFUSE to ever give these losers my money. I hope birds deficate on their gravestone. read more

The rep at the counter was great, the car fine, but the customer service horrible. I left my work cell in the car, my locator service on the phone clearly showed it was there and no one would call me back or help me. I would not recommend as they cannot be counted on. Additionally the rep on the phone hung up on me. read more

Rented a car for the weekend and when returning it that Saturday the system was down to close out my ticket. The following Tuesday I was charged $215 and another $253, followed by a voicemail saying the car was overdue and needed to be returned. Called the 1.800 # and the first customer service lady was unhelpful so I called again and he was able to submit a claim. However, as of a week later those charges are still pending and no one has searched out to me via phone/email to rectify the situation. NEVER AGAIN!! Horrible experience for a 2-day car rental for $93! And FYI, Payless is now owned by Avis. read more

Payless has some poor reviews in some locations but the service, price and car were all very good at this location. Because of the reviews you do need to know what options you wish to accept or deny and be careful with the paperwork - but no concerns here! read more

I need to put one star because there is no option not to put any star. Service is terrible. No one EVER answers the phone in customer service, in 24-hours road service, or in emergencies. I was stuck with the car before the State Police rescued me 6 hours later. No sign of Payless anywhere. I even had to pay myself in cash for the tow truck, which was never reimbursed. NEVER EVER rent from such an unreliable company. Experience is one of the worst in my life. read more

You get what you pay for. This is the worst car rental company. The car was dirty. They only had 4 cars available on the lot. The car had 40,000 miles on it. The transmission was slipping and when I called to see if we could get a replacement they said we were basically on our own. We would have to rent from a different company and we would still be charged the full amount. I will never use this company again. Worst experience of my life!! read more

You have to be on your toes with this one. The customer service was not bad but it could have been better. They did try to sneak in the $3.99/day roadside assistance but I noticed my bill didn't match my reservation price and they removed the charge. My biggest complaint is that I couldn't get the same rate when I tried to renew for an additional week (w/out car due to accident). Bottom line, I had my quote and told the girl to make her paperwork match my quote and until it matched I would not sign. She didn't give me a hard time and quickly realized I was not to be reckoned with! read more

Although the Payless Car Rental at the Albuquerque Airport regularly gets slammed in reviews, I was very pleasantly surprised. The car I had reserved cost several hundred dollars less than comparable rentals from other agencies, the man at the counter explained the option of additional insurance but was not at all pushy, and the model (a Ford Fusion) I had requested was clean with low mileage and was ready even though our flight was late and got in in the early evening. There were a few very minor dings, which I might not have noticed, but these were noted on the rental agreement. Our early morning return was as easy as driving into the Payless lot and dropping the keys in the safe box. read more

Crooks! Make sure to read entire agreement and don't trust any of there representatives at the location, because I was made to believe it was the same price as my online agreement verbally. I signed at location upon trust. Then to come to find out, there were numerous charges when I returned the vehicle. No one could change, help, or alter it because the representative that closed me out that night was brand new. No management could assist. They only gave me an Online customer service number to help me and said if everything was true as I stated I would be reimbursed. The online customer service did not hear my plea and continued to write off the incident, in my interpretation, i should have not trusted Payless Car Rentals staff and read the agreement extensively. I did not authorize the extra charges and fought it through my credit card which unfortunately did not hear my claim either and stood with Payless because of my signature on the disclosure. DONT GO HERE AND DONT RENT A VEHICLE WITH THOSE LOOKING TO SCAM YOU! PAY-MUCH-MORE SHOULD BE THIS COMPANYS new name because they are out to take advantage. read more

The old bait and switch is standard operating procedure here! We reserved a SUV from Expedia. When we arrived they only had cars available. After a 30 min. discussion with desk clerk he was able to acquire a SUV from a sister company, but we were charged $400 more than our quote from Expedia. There was never a manager available. Cooperate agents gave us the run around, but no one addressed our needs. Lots of excuses and no satisfaction. Shady business practices all the way around. DO NOT PATRONIZE!! read more

The guy outside could not find the car the lady at the counter rented to me. I was charged $5.99 per day for "RSP" (roadside service protection) which I thought I had denied. Unfortunately I do not have the signed version of the contract because they reprinted it when I brought the car back, with the gas guage on full, and he gave me a copy of the contract with a charge for a full tank of gas. I protested it and he reprinted it without the gas. I contacted customer service and got a runaround. read more

All the negative reviews are accurate. We did get a great price BUT it wasn't worth the 30 minute wait in line at the counter (lines out the door), plus the hour wait for a car once we paid (at least 40 other people waiting for their car after finishing at the counter). The staff was apathetic and this leads me to think this happens regularly. read more

I am astounded at the negative reviews here. My friend and I arrived in Albuquerque late at night, and we had a terrible experience at Budget that drove us to Payless. But Payless made it ALL BETTER!!!!! The woman who took our information and arranged the rental was fantastic, polite, warm, encouraging, welcoming, helpful; the car was clean, gorgeous, comfortable, perfect. The cost was about half what we would have paid at Budget, and there were NO HIDDEN costs whatsoever. We paid exactly what we expected to pay and got phenomenal gas mileage to boot. Worst car rental experience ever. I would give it -5 stars. First they rented a car with a broken bumper. I came back to notify them and the attendant said he knew it was broken but he was sure it would t fall off. Let me drive away in it. I called to extend my rental for another day and they charged an extra fee for extending it. I asked if I could return it and rent again since it would at 1/3 of the price. The attendant said it wouldn't make a difference and hung up. When I returned the car the stems ant asked me about my experience and I explained what had occurred. He said sorry wish it would ha even better. Employees do not care nor does the company. Don't rent from them! read more

May be the cheapest but not worth the worst customer service I've ever experienced or the faulty cars they provide. I called multiple times and they stopped returning my calls after leaving a condescending phone call that it was "operator error". I'm in my mid-40's, I know how to work a car seat (if it in operable condition, which it wasn't). I also attempted to contact customer service and filed an online claim - twice! Both times they closed the complaint without ever contacting me or trying to fix the problem. I was so frustrated! Now I just hope to share my awful experience so that others won't have to go through the same! I will NEVER rent from Payless Car Rental again. read more

The price for renting a car is very good compared to other rentals but that's it.The tire blew out and the guy I called had a hard time getting someone to us so he told us to go to the nearest town to repair the tire. They said 2-3 weeks to get my refund for replacing the tire. The customer service is disappointing and unprofessional. I would call and call and no one would answer. I went in person and their office is not that huge. I had to call corporate to get their manager to call me back. No, I didn't get a full refund. They gave me partial refund and coupons to rent from them again. If I would have known, I would have taken the tire with me. You get what you pay for. Not worth it. Not one bit. read more

Wouldn't even give one star unless I had to give a star to review this horrid business. I reserved a car for a week at a rate of $115.00 for the week including all taxes and fees. After a sales hype of how I need all the extra insurance and denying the coverage, the lady (and I use that word loosely) printed out my rental agreement. Much to my surprise it was not $115 for the week but approximately $165++. I read the contract and saw that she had included roadside assistance and breakdown coverage at approximately $4 per day. I asked here why the $165. She began to feed me a string of lies that included taxes and airport fees that she could not control. (Government fees, over which she had no control.) She neglected to give me the accurate reason for the fee increase which was the breakdown and garbage fee that she had added without my knowledge or consent. When I pointed out this additional fee, she told me how it had to be included because if the car broke down I would have to pay for towing, etc. Really? The company doesn't cover the car if it breaks down? Either she was totally incompetent, a bait and switch artist or the company is a scam. Probably some of all three. I am 63 and have rented many, many cars in my life, so I have seen most scams (mostly done in foreign countries) but this one was one of the worst. Be careful of the scam. Southwest Airlines assisted me in booking Air, Hotel and car rental for San Francisco on Dec. 23rd due to an unexpected funeral. Payless was recommended for best economy in view of rising Christmas rates. When returning the car the following morning on Dec. 24th @ 4:50 A.M. to the off site Payless rental lot, I was not allowed onto the property until 5 AM, their opening time. Following car inspection, I walked to the Van that would transport me to the SFO Rental Car Center in order to catch the Airtran to the terminal. The female van driver, with an attitude, opened the baggage area of the van and proceeded to tell me I would have to load my own suitcase because she did not want to injure her back! The woman was at least 5'10" and over 200 lbs. whereas I am 5'1"and 94 lbs. Although my suitcase, 30" Samsonite carbonite, was near empty (christmas presents gifted), the driver never attempted to touch nor help me load the bag! Likewise, I was expected to unload my suitcase at the Rental Car Center. Payless reviewed my complaint and stated "their employees are not expected to provide luggage service" but can contact skycaps and porters. Excuse me but there are no skycaps nor porters at the SFO Car rental site! Travelers... avoid Payless Car Rental. This company does not take pride in Customer Service. read more
