I really hope this reaches someone who can implement this for training throughout your company. I came in to Houston for a family reunion. Not wanting to inconvenience my family due to them possibly being busy, I decided it would be best to rent a car. I was able to make a reservation for a car while exiting the airport, which I found to be very convenient. When I came out the terminal, the shuttle for the car rental place was already outside and ready to take me to the location. Once I got to the rental location, I approached the desk and gave the customer service rep my ID and reservation number. Once the rep found my info, I was told that I was too early for the reservation and needed to wait. No problem...understandable. After about 20 minutes, I was allowed to come back up to the desk to process my rental. The rep I dealt with was pleasant and gave me a good recommendation on somewhere to eat. Everything was going well until it came time to authorize my car rental purchase. Once I inserted my card, everything was confirmed and approved. By the way, please make sure you have a credit card for the rental. I saw at least two people come in with debit cards not be allowed to get their rental. Here's where the issue occurred. Somewhere in the rep's process, it was discovered that I had a rental car out in their system. I confirmed to the rep that I have a rental through Avis back home that I was using for business purposes. Once this was discovered, a manager was alerted of the matter. The manager stated the only way I could get the rental would be if I had another driver on the vehicle. Since I was traveling by myself, I was not allowed to get the rental. No problem...understandable. Seeing that the authorization on my card went through, I asked the rep when the authorization would be removed so that I could attempt to rent from another company. The rep stated that they didn't process anything so nothing should've went through. Houston...we have a problem and it's not understandable. I advised the rep there absolutely was a charge that went through and I needed to know when it would be gone. They stated it should be cleared after midnight. Unfortunately, the authorization is still on my card and I wound up utilizing rideshare companies the whole weekend to get around. It was a great inconvenience to what I wanted to do. I don't know the process for getting reservations done, but something needs to be instituted that prevents this from happening to anyone else again. I probably could've went to another place, but my time had already been soured by the experience. I hope this finds the right department so that this step could be implemented. read more

Bus shuttle to and from the airport to and from the airport was the only good thing about my experience. My main complaint was that my estimate was $194.13 and was charged $382.41. I asked for a copy of the contract I was signing and was told, "This is Payless!" The car smelled like marijuana with a fragrance overspray. I drove with the rear windows down. The windshield was so dirty I could hardly see out of it. There was no wiper fluid! I had to pour water on it while the wipers were working. At the return, I was told that I would get a final receipt via email. Its been 4 days and I haven't received anything. read more

This was a terrible experience all around. We waited 1.5 hours in line to get a car that was a level below what we reserved. At that point we didn't care, so we accepted the smaller black Jetta no problem. We then waited again for 25 minutes for the car to pull up, but finally asked someone who went looking for the black Jetta. No black Jetta. We ended up with a Chevy traverse eventually when they couldn't find the original car they assigned to us. We got to the hotel to drop things off before going to visit my husband's dying grandmother. The car won't start! And the rental company is not willing to do anything about it! This is the worst start to an already stressful and sad trip. And all with a tired toddler! read more

Was quoted one price and charged way more. Terrible customer service. My parents are there for cancer treatment at M.D.. Anderson and this company has been nothing short of a nightmare for them. Upfees different than original quote. Long lines, not one single person has had any compassion for older people who are frightened and frustrated with this company and their "surprise fees" and $17 an hour if you're late returning bc time was not specified for return date. And why wasn't the time on the quote? Never again. Don't do it. No drivers to pick you up at airport like the other companies so my parents who are elderly had to wait over an hour just for pick up from airport to car rental location. Nightmare of an experience! A VERY BUSY place during the day on the weekend when we came. The woman who helped us was very kind and helpful but you can tell it's a stressful environment for everyone unfortunately. You need patience as a customer otherwise go somewhere else. They give you a description of the car and license number and you wait expecting the car to be brought to you as some experience but sometimes the employees don't bring the car to you- like in our experience- so we took the initiative to look for our car and walk over to the employees to ask if it is ready. Very dark parking lot that's not marked well. If you're not familiar, it will be difficult to find. My car was smashed in between some weird posts and pipes and a large SUV that was parked crooked so, I had to squeeze in (why are the driver's seats always pulled all the way forward?????), pull the car out, just to access other doors and put in my luggage. ANNOYING. The car itself was clean and I had no issues with it. The staff was ok except Shirley who was WONDERFUL! She is exceedingly friendly and a lovely way to be welcomed to Houston! This is not a shoe store. They rent cars. Which meant I had to apologize to my father-in-law for making fun of him for guiding us to rent a car from a shoe store, which already set me and Payless off on the wrong foot. But honestly, we didn't have any major issues. It's true that you get what you pay for, but I'd much rather save a few bucks overall in exchange for a slightly less luxurious shuttle ride to and from the airport (we were hustled into the back of a van, while Hertz had the nice bright and shiny shuttle with double doors that swing out welcomingly). The car was there when we arrived, check in was slow but pleasant, and the car was clean, comfortable, and it ran. That's all I really need. You don't have to pay a lot, but you'll get a lot. I think that's the Payless motto. Or maybe it's "Two for Five? Man alive!" Whatever works. But they don't offer two cars for five dollars so I don't think that works actually. read more

Do not rent from here I rented a vehicle for seven days at the price of $261. I called at the end of my initial contact to extend for a week I spoke to TWO not one but TWO different representatives to verify the charges upon the return of my rental. Imagine my surprise when I returned the rental car Ians got a bill of $760 and some change when they initially told me that it would be $460. I will never ever deal with them again!!! I should've known better when they didn't send over a new contract for the extension of the rental I will NEVER deal with them again and I will never refer anyone to them! Renting from this company had to be my worst experience ever. The cars were dirty outside and in. The customer service could have been so much better. There were at least six insects in my car. I killed about five spiders in one roach this is unacceptable. I could have badly injured myself because I have a fear of spiders and they just came out of nowhere while I was driving. I was pleasantly surprised by Payless Car Rental! Initially, I was a bit weary as I booked it through a third party site that woudn't let me see the name of the place until after I booked. Once I saw "Payless," I was even more concerned because I had never heard of it or seen a desk at Hobby airport. Well, when I got to Hobby, there obviously wasn't a desk inside. However, I just asked the information desk and they said to go outside and there'd be a van. Sure enough, there was a van with a nice driver waiting for me. Usually, you'd have to wait for 12 other passengers to get there before leaving. Nope - Mr. Driver took lil ol' me to my car. He also graciously took my bags into the office and gave me information about my services on the way. The staff in the office were quick, efficient, and friendly. When I went out to check out the car, there was another kind staffer helping me with my bag, looking over the car with me, etc. The car itself was nice! In fact, it's nicer than my own car. Low mileage and drove like a dream - and for such a good price! The only reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is that the office was closed when I returned my car, causing some complications. Now, I do have to say that they warned me that they closed at 3pm and did tell me how to handle the return if I showed up after but 3pm just seems so early to close on a Saturday. I like to return the car with someone there to ensure I don't get charged for any damages or lost keys. I awkwardly had to put the key in the Budget box and wasn't 100% sure it was going to reach it's intended destination. Furthermore, I had to take an $6 Uber for a 3-min drive because you can't really walk up those airport ramps (especially with a suitcase) and not expect to be at least a little bit run over. Overall, I would say I got more than what I paid for! The price was low, the car was great, and the staff was efficient. I would definitely use them again and just make sure I can return the time during business hours. read more

Went back inside to tell them I've never rented a car in that shape and instead of just putting us in something else told us to wait while they clean it. Wait, what?! There was drinks spilled in the cup holders, brown stuff splattered on the roof, skittles and crumbs under the seats, a foot print on the roof. When i got in the car in the dark parking garage at the Airport i was in a hurry and didn't notice how dirty the car was. Once i got back in the car from the restaurant we went to, i noticed how dirty the car was. I was horrified and grossed out to even sit in the seats. Unfortunately, i was only going to have the car for about 6 hours and was on a tight schedule so i had no time to go back to airport and get a different one. It's a toss up between Payless and Advantage at Houston Hobby. Both are quite awful, but Payless leads in terms of suckiness. I just returned my vehicle from a four day trip. When I picked it up, I had to go on Yelp to figure out that their shuttle comes only when called. When I got to the rental facility, trailer, I was given the smallest SUV possible. It had a massive dent in the door, and wreaked of smoke. Being that their parking lot is dirt, the car was filthy. I was pressed for time, so I decided to not have it washed. I mean, why would that be done before it's rented out? That makes no sense! There was also the word Payless painted on the passenger window in the rear. Not small either, but rather, a nasty blind spot of its own. I had to get paint thinner to remove it. The front end was in desperate need of an alignment. The 700 or so miles I drove it was exhausting trying to fight the car wanting to drift sharply to the right. The shit show got better when I returned it. At least the guy who rented me the car was actually personable. The idiot who was working when I returned it had the personality of a dead fish. No greeting, no lame small talk, or even a thank you. When she asked if I needed a shuttle to the airport, I said yes, thinking it'd be a quick wait. Wrong. I decided to walk to the terminal. It's only a quarter mile. In that 15 minutes of crossing the busy road and finding my way to the terminal, I never saw this shuttle. Lesson learned here....rent from reputable places you've had good experiences with. I booked a rental through a third party, to be picked up at IAH. I was in line at the counter for no less than 40 minutes. Then, the CSR sent me with paperwork to get a car that wasn't in the parking spot indicated, or anywhere nearby. The assistant in the garage was rude and didn't help, when I asked if he could help me find the car I was supposed to take. He sent me back to the counter, which took me no less than 20 minutes to go, wait again, and then come back to get a car. I will not recommend Payless and I will not use it again because time is very valuable to me. And as a customer, obviously, I am not valuable to Payless or else customer service would be better. I am very disappointed. I have used other companies at IAH that are much better at customer service. I will gladly use the company that value my business. read more

Will never rent from this place again. They have no way of accommodating you if your flight is early in the morning before their business hours. I arrived at 6:20am because my flight was for 8:55am and no one was there. I called customer service who was no help at all to me. I arrived at 9:45am and the nasty women working the counter refused to rent me a car since I was early and they had limited cars and needed to make sure they had cars for people that had reservations before 10:30. In all my years of traveling I have always been able to pick a car early. So finally after waiting 20 minutes and having four people go ahead of me and rent cars they finally rented me a car. PICKUP They don't have a counter inside the airport but don't mention this in your email confirmation so you are at least aware you just needed to walk outside and wait for the shuttle. When I did make it to the facility, it was quite rundown and for a second, I was sure I was in the wrong spot since all I saw were a bunch of UHaul trucks. The guys at the counter were extremely nice which was basically the only good thing about this experience. The interior of the car was in "meh" condition; it definitely wasn't properly cleaned from the last use. I was in a bit of a hurry so I just dealt with it. Barely 10 minutes into my trip, I got a low tire notification so I had to stop and get some air. Which leads me to think it wasn't properly checked out before I picked it up. Thankfully all I needed was some air and nothing more serious. RETURN I got there on Sunday morning to return my vehicle and they were closed. I had specifically asked about them being open on Sunday (because the sign outside the door said they were closed) and was told they open. What they failed to mention is that they open at 10. So when I showed up at 9.30 no one was there and there were no instructions on what to do. Luckily there was a guy who I think works for UHaul. He told me I had to drop my key in the dropbox and then walk across the street and catch a shuttle from one of the other rental companies. Sigh. So I had to fill out the paperwork, drop everything off and then drag my luggage across the street (with no crosswalk) in the Houston heat. It all worked out in the end but I wish I would have known all this information before hand to enable me plan better. OVERALL Unless it's the only choice available (I sure hope not), I don't plan to rent from here again. Lesson learnt! read more
