I should have heeded all the red flags: No advertisement, No Yelp page, No reviews....I had to create a Yelp page just to write this review! However the worst part was that she seemed very nervous and unsure of herself throughout the whole process. She was going out of order, taking too long of a time to file my nails. I was certain something was wrong when she started laying the acrylic powder on my nails. They were so thick, bumpy, with an uneven brush stroke. She must've seen the look on my face and the deafening silence of my voice because she actually admitted to me that SHE WAS NERVOUS! I asked her why is she nervous if she's a professional? I'll tell you why, it's because I'm certain that she has never done nails before. The place looked like a run- down, hole in the wall place that has never seen a customer a day in its life. I question the legitimacy of her license. You may be asking why I considered getting my nails done, let alone stay once I realized something was off? Well, she's a woman of color and so I know how difficult it can be to break into this industry when your the minority. I really wanted to give her a chance as she presented herself as a sweet person. I also stayed because I had a job interview later that day, and just wanted her to finish, even though it took her nearly 4 HOURS to complete! Never again. Will be doing my own nails moving forward. It was a horrific experience and my nails came out looking absolutely horrible and unprofessional.

Usually, I would have made an appointment, but this was a spur-of-the-moment decision on my end. Roberta, the owner, was able to accommodate me, and I'm so glad she did. Smudge Nail Bar is a woman- and Black-owned, non-toxic, eco-friendly salon here in Sacramento that specializes in the care of natural nails. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Oni, the receptionist, who was very pleasant and checked me in for my services. I chose the Bougie Bit*h Gel Mani & Pedi. I was also offered water and rosé. I declined the rosé since I was driving--and I never leave home without my water! The space is so clean, inviting, and beautiful. I loved everything about it, from the live plants to the decor. Tiffany, my nail tech, greeted me and explained that she'd be taking care of both my manicure and pedicure. She also confirmed the services I'd requested and had already prepared my pedicure station. The water temperature was perfect! She recommended a polish brand I'd never heard of before, Chaun Legend, and I'm now in love, lol. My pedicure turned out great. I was given options for my scrub and lotion, and I chose lavender. The hot stones were also a plus! I especially appreciated how much education I received throughout my service because, naturally, I asked lots of questions. The manicure process was completely new to me because I'd never had a dry manicure before. Tiffany explained the process and also let me know that if I ever wanted nail art or wanted to extend my natural nails using gel or Gel-X, those were options. I absolutely love how my manicure turned out. Chatting with the other patrons and staff was the icing on the cake. The checkout process was smooth, and I really appreciated receiving aftercare instructions. Oh--and I got a hug from Roberta, the owner. I love hugs! Hugs heal!
